First published more than a decade ago, and with many million copies sold world-wide in different editions, "A New Catechism" is possibly the single most important religious book of the post Vatican II era. The "Dutch" catechism was the first major work of its kind to emerge from Vatican II. Despite the appearance in recent years of other catechisms in many formats and written from many different perspectives, "A New Catechism" remains the basic work that continues to present, better than any other book, contemporary Catholic faith and practice in light of both traditional doctrine and the very latest teachings of the Church. Perfect for high school, college, and seminary, "A New Catechism" is also the best choice for C.C.D. classes and adult study groups of all kinds. Its unique format, which avoids the rote teaching of question-and-answer memorizing in order to make a frank, probing, and entirely contemporary summary of Catholic faith, has been copied, as has its content, but it remains today the source from which all the source from which all others follow.
I haven't actually read this and probably never will, but it has perhaps the best advertising quote on the back that I've ever seen:
"Profoundly orthodox."
If that's not enough to thrill you, "the theological foundations of this catechism are thoroughly sound." My, it's a wonder the book's not flying off the shelves with sexy endorsements like that!
[Both quotes are also, in hindsight, somewhat ironic, but that's another story]
