FIVE BROWN ENVELOPES

Rate this book
Nduka “Kaka” Kabiri’s company is in trouble. A legacy inherited from his late father, Construction Lions Limited will be liquidated after their multi-billion-dollar project in Northeastern Nigeria is seized and destroyed by terrorists.
To save his company, Kaka’s bid must win a World-Bank-sponsored rail project tender. This contract will pay off all his debt and make Kaka one of the richest men in Africa. The stakes are high, and greedy, powerful, dangerous men in the corridors of power—and some close enough to walk the corridors of his own home—will do anything to stop Kaka from winning the rail tender.
Things become dangerous for him when a beautiful seductress, Tsemaye, appears. She is followed in sequence by five brown envelopes whose mysterious contents threaten to destroy his young family, ensuring that he may lose more than just the rail tender. Five Brown Envelopes is a gripping thriller in the tradition of Jeffrey Archer and Richard North Patterson.

Nduka ‘Kaka’ Kabiri is visited in his late father’s village home by his friend and creditor, Zak, who comes to inform him that the bank has decided to recall the loan immediately.

Kaka’s father took a loan from Zak’s family bank to build a hydroelectric dam, but the project failed due to a terrorist invasion, leaving the company in debt worth millions of dollars. Failure to pay back means the company will be liquidated.

Kaka’s firm is bidding for a World-Bank-sponsored rail project tender worth billions of dollars; winning this bid will pay off all his debt, save his company and make him one of the wealthiest men in the country.
But Kaka is up against two powerful and ruthless competitors who are willing to do anything to prevent him from winning the rail tender.

These men first try to convince Kaka to join forces with them, and when he refuses, he starts to get threats and is set up.
Meanwhile, Kaka is facing some challenges with his wife, which worsens when he receives brown envelopes in his mail.

Review.

Five Brown Envelopes is a thriller. It’s a fast-paced read that kept me intrigued and entertained until the last page.

Kaka has been meeting with the other bidders, and Trevor Whyte and Alhaji, who just so happened to be working with the Chairman of the Federal Infrastructure Commission, who is supposed to oversee the tender, tried to persuade him to join their team.

“Look at it this way. I’m trapped in a sunken boat underwater. I’ll be drowned if I hold on, and I’d drown if I jump into the ocean or I just may survive”

Kaka chooses to handle the bid alone after carefully assessing his choices.

After what Kaka believes to be helping the Chairman’s PA, Mr. Elaigwu, turns out to be a setup, he ends up in jail and then in court.

The book is divided into five parts, and part 1 ends when Kaka receives and opens the third envelope, where he finds pictures of his wife in a compromising position. This caused tension in their marriage and was one of the main reasons Kaka and Tsemaye started dating.

My favorite characters are Binali, Kaka’s cousin, and Ure, Kaka’s wife. Binali was such a pillar for Kaka, and it was beautiful to read about their brotherhood and love.

Overall, Five Brown Envelopes was an excellent read that explored greed, betrayal, loyalty, and infidelity.

The plot in this book was packed with suspense. Story moved really fast and interestingly. Kaka is truly lucky to survive that kind of conspiracy from all those people. It felt like one man against a nation. I wish his cousin Banli had played more role in resolving all the wahala he went through. Nice read!!!!

A very intriguing and wonderful read. Definitely a book that could make for a great movie or limited series someday.
