Pelican Bay #4

More Than Enough

Rate this book
Sawyer
Hiding and running, that’s what I’m good at. It’s who I am. It’s who I have to be...
For Sawyer Brower, the picture-perfect town of Pelican Bay was just supposed to be another place to take refuge for a few months before moving on. One year later finds the seemingly unflappable wildlife veterinarian settling into what’s supposed to be the quiet life of contentment he’s always wanted.

But there’s nothing quiet about the arrival of the gorgeous but very bitter ex-soldier who seems intent on destroying what’s left of his life after losing his legs to an IED.

Jett
I didn’t just lose my legs in that godforsaken desert, I lost the man I used to be… the man I should’ve been. How the hell am I supposed to come back from that? I can’t. I won’t…
While it took years of hard work and determination for Jett Sharpe to prove he deserved a spot in a prestigious military academy followed by an illustrious career in the army, it took just seconds for it to all be over. With nearly all of his brothers-in-arms lost to a roadside bomb and his own future irrevocably changed, Jett’s got little left to live for.

So when his best friend shows up in Oklahoma with an ultimatum—go freely with him to Minnesota or by court order— Jett knows he has little choice in the matter. But hell if he’s going to make it easy on any of the men who keep trying to convince him he’s family.

Two men running, one from the past, the other from the future…
Nothing about Sawyer and Jett makes sense. Not after their disastrous first meeting and most certainly not the white-hot chemistry that keeps pulling them together. Scarred minds and wounded souls are forgotten when desire takes over, but masks have a way of settling back into place for two men who have nothing real to hang on to.

Can Sawyer and Jett let the walls that are keeping them safe within themselves fall or will they miss out not only on each other, but the very thing the town of Pelican Bay is offering them?

A place to call home.

Another one bites the dust.
That's another author I am taking a break from.
I was so excited for their book. We've been waiting for 2 years for it.

I knew what I was getting into when starting a Sloane book: insta-love gallore, endearments, traumatic backstory and the ever present magic cock.

But, but .....

This book was the Sloaniest of the Sloane books. Like, it was too Sloane for even Sloane. It started out ok, entertaining if a bit predictable. And then things started going downhill.
I just couldn't. I barely finished the book. And I'm so epically frustrated.

I'm sorry Sloane. You were one of very first MM authors, but the recycling of the same characters into every book is not working for me anymore.

Note: This book needed a TW. I don't understand why Sloane would forget adding it.

More Than Enough wasn't quite enough.

While I liked the MCs, their ongoing back and forth was exhausting. The first 60% or so was filled with constant miscommunication. Every time Sawyer would try to explain himself, Jett would leave, and vice versa.

Both men had experienced intense trauma. Jett lost both legs in combat. He is suicidal and wishes Maddox had just let him die. Sawyer was repeatedly abused by his ex-boyfriend and is terrified of his ex finding him, which he does, of course.

Bad things ensue because it wouldn't be a Sloane Kennedy novel if they didn't.

I liked the previous three books in the Pelican Bay series, but this story was too insta lovey for me. I hated that the evil ex was somewhat redeemed at the end when what he did to Sawyer was unforgivable.

Also, the deaf dog subplot was completely unnecessary, and I hate saying that because I love dogs IRL and in fiction. It was just a way for Jett and Sawyer to bond.

The last chapter, when the "where did this dog come from?" mystery was solved, felt so random. Why introduce all these new people who had nothing to do with the rest of the book at the very end?

It was a mess but it was a hot mess...

In addition to the Insta-love and shallow characterization, Sloane Kennedy spent more time in creating traumatizing problems and solving them - than necessary. There were literally zero chemistry between Sawyer and Jett. I get a whole history lesson on Sawyer and his abusive ex. But we rarely see any of Sawyer and Jet moments. And the miscommunication...God...irritated the hell out of me. I was so excited for their story and I'm so disappointed. I really appreciated all the important discussions the author brought them, but I had come here to read a ROMANCE. You should have provided me one...

The writing also seemed off. Sloane Kennedy has a beautiful writing style. I have thought of it as easy to read and emotionally engaging. But I don't know what happened in this book. Some paragraphs were very hard to understand. I even read some three times over and still was like..."WHAT?? Is it the book or I'm the dumb?" This book belongs strictly to the "I loved the idea but it failed to execute" category.

Loved the found family and their friendship dynamics as always. The disability rep was actually good. The sex scenes were of course good; low in angst compared to her other series yet really hot. I enjoyed some parts of the book. Everything wasn't bad. But mostly it was bad.

A very apt title. I think I've said before in a review for one of Sloane's stories that she and I have outgrown each other and it's pretty much rinse and repeat with her work...much like Lily Morton. I stopped reading anything of Lily's quite a while ago, and I'm afraid that once Chasing Secrets is out and read, I'll be finished with Sloane too.

Thanks to that megalomaniac midget in Russia, there is currently too much angst in the world for me to read about it as well. I didn't like the fact that there were NO trigger warnings whatsoever, that there didn't seem to be a lot of character development and to be perfectly honest, apart from Newt and some of the older characters, the story was fairly bland. There has been a 4 year gap between The Truth Within and this one, and other authors have filled it for me. That's just the way it is 😕.

Maybe I would liked this book several years ago, but now I only want to punch both of the MCs. And the side characters too.

I enjoyed the previous books. I read them a long time ago and hardly remember anything 🙃, ( except Isaac in the lingerie-that was hot) and it wasn’t the problem, the book had been written to retell and explain everything about the other characters and the past. I didn’t liked the MCs neither the plot. I spent this few days ( in currently reading mode) in FB and Reddit and Bored Panda. I wanted to enjoy this, but hasn’t been lucky 🤷🏻‍♀️

I loved Sawyer in the previous books and this was such a disappointment. I did not like at all the hot and cold attitude Sawyer and Jett had going on towards each other and how they kissed and then suddenly they couldn't and then kissed again and it was wrong and then kissed one more time and did something nonsensical to fuck things up.

Stopped at the point Sawyer's abuse ex-boyfriend showed up. I'm not here for that.

i wanted to read this so i can get ready for Theo and Linc's story which hopefully will come out soon!!

but this had a lot of triggers for those who have been in an abusive relationship and those with suicidal ideations.

but even with that i did enjoy this story, i didn't fully feel the connection between jett and sawyer by the time they were exchanging "i love you's" but i still enjoyed their story.

mainly i am looking forward to linc and theo's book haha

First off, there should probably be trigger warnings for abuse, DV, suicidal thoughts and possibly others.

This has been my favorite Sloane Kennedy series, but this one just didn't work as well for me. I felt like something was missing from the story all around. The relationship felt very rushed - even though I liked both characters I had trouble getting invested with the way things played out. The best part of it all was Jett's interaction with Apollo, a deaf dog that is taken in at the sanctuary, but even that was a mess at the end. There is also plenty of drama and angst, but even that couldn't save it for me.

I was so confused at the end with how the dog's story was wrapped up .

It’s no secret that I really like Sloane Kennedy’s writing and this one was no exception.
Whatever the story might be, this author never fails to engage me. I always feel something, sympathy for a character plight, anger over what they went through, excitement over the feelings burgeoning.
Sawyer was interest from the start, you just knew something was biting at his heels.
He went through something too many people unfortunately go through everyday and no everybody understand the reach it can have in someone’s very soul. Here it’s depicted beautifully. You measure the strength the “victims” have, how they always were and are warriors in a battle they didn’t choose.
I knew I’d like Jett and I did. His life was up-ended and he just didn’t know how to cope, how to accept, how to overcome. What he sent through can be applied to so many more things than losing limbs, which makes it easy to connect with him.

Now I ain’t gonna lie I’m fully ready for Theo and Linc !! And I can’t wait.

4.5⭐️ My favorite book of the series so far! This story has everything: suspense, action, psychological thrill, steam, romance, humor, heroic animals, cute kids, and two very emotionally broken men learning how to trust one another.

Jett and Sawyer’s dynamic was explosive in more ways than one. I loved the slow-burn progression of their relationship as they each struggled to overcome their pasts. This story was so intense and riveting. Loved it.

Who would have thought that mature and competent Sawyer would be that messed up inside? Domestic and mental abuse is too often a silent crime. There was a lot to this book, too much, to be honest. I have written and deleted two very long reviews because there was just too much going on to comment. I like how another reviewer called it a ‘hot mess’. I agree. My expectations for this book were very high and it was disappointing that I was skimming reading after a good opening. DNF

4.5 Stars!

I love this series! It's been a while since I read the first two books in this series, but I was so ready to read this one. Once I started reading, I realized that I hadn't read the third book The Truth Within yet; I am currently fixing that oversight. You can definitely read this one out of order like I did, but I do think that having read at least one of the previous books will help you know the supporting characters better. Just for clarity, Sawyer appeared in all the other books, and Jett briefly appears in Sanctuary Found.

That said, wow! What a read! There were a lot of surprises in this story that I totally didn't expect or see coming. So, I will try my best to avoid spoilers. Both Sawyer and Jett have been hurt and are still trying to heal. Their first meeting was under unfortunate circumstances, but I'm not sure that their first meeting would have gone any better no matter the situation. I could understand why Jett was so surly, but it was hard not to want him to realize that he had friends and family just waiting for him to welcome them in.  I was happy to see them both start learning to talk (instead of assuming) and understand that they needed to be more open minded about what the other was experiencing. I loved that Jett found the drive to improve himself and his situation. I loved that Sawyer was able to put more trust into Jett and his friends. I loved that they learned to comfort and find safety and peace with each other. Once they let go of their assumptions and looked beneath the surface, they were wonderful together.

I can't wait to read the next book when it is ready; just a few months before we have Lincoln and Theo's story!

Heartwarming

This is one book that I had a hard time putting down until it was finished, even then I had to go back and read it again.

Sawyer Brower is a wildlife veterinarian helping out at The Sanuctuary. He wants to become part of the close-knit family there, but something is holding him back. Jett Sharpe is a former soldier who survived a roadside bomb overseas, he is brought to Sanctuary by Maddox, his friend, who just wants to keep Jett from harming himself.

The two men are broken and lost in different ways and when they first meet, they do not take to each other. Over time, casual run-ins and the mutual job of taking care of a lost dog, they begin to fall for each other.

Theirs is not an easy road, as Jett has to rely on someone else to help him navigate his new life and Sawyer has to trust someone with the secrets that he is running from.

It is a beautiful love story that brought me to tears more than once. Sloane has once again taken us on a journey with two remarkable men and the people that love them unconditionally.

Family is not always the one that you are born into, but from the friends you make along the way.

Have you ever tried to ....

When Jett, Maddox's buddy from the military threatens to hurt him self because the cost of war had a high price for both men to pay. Jett may have lost his legs, identity in that sandbox but Maddox blamed himself because he was In charge. Coming to live with Maddox wasn't Jetts choice an he lashed out using cruel hatred because he was pushing everyone away.
Sawyer Brower the town vet was a man that was use to mask his feelings an running away. Sawyer literally crashes into Jetts wheelchair . The sparks began to fly between the two men which scared the living hell out of both of them. Would Jett an Sawyer Contuine to run away from the feeling that had began to surface? Or could the men learn to trust each other an in the process be more together than they ever could alone?
Some very emotional scenes but also some hot m/m action. A great read that allows true love to conquer even the damages that was done to thier minds, hearts and souls!!

Sloane Kennedy has done it again I loved More Than Enough so much I could put it down. I loved being back In Pelican Bay and catching up with what feels like old friends I adored Sawyer and Jett their story was both heartbreaking and heartwarming I absolutely love a second chance story and that is exactly how I feel about this second chance romance and while this may not be a second chance in the we fell in love when we were young and unforeseen circumstances happened and we went our separate way; way but a second chance for both Sawyer and Jett in a different way I couldn’t keep the smile off my face. another hit Sloane can’t wait to read more

I’ve never read a book of Sloane’s that I didn’t enjoy and this book does not disappoint.

Her ability to draw you in from the first chapter. Create characters that break your heart and put it back together. To develop a story filled with heartache and love. To describe their story and make you feel so invested in their lives.

Jett and Sawyer both experienced the unthinkable yet together they discover their pasts have changed them and together, their futures will be unforgettable.

Continue the Journey of our friends in Pelican Bay. Don’t forget the furry ones too.

I’ve been waiting for Jett & Sawyer for what feels like forever!!

This series is one of my favourites by Sloane as the issues feel a little bit darker.

These guys relationship is up and down from the beginning but the instant chemistry is explosive ❤️ Jett is the injured veteran intent on not looking at a future, Sawyer is the secretive Vet who is running from a past.

I love how Sloane weaves a story and this book is just perfect 🥰

Pelican Bay, MN. This marvelous story is about a Veterinarian and a recovering wounded warrior, both with scarred minds and troubled souls.
Sawyer is our Veterinarian, (on cover), broad shoulders,

a trim waist, who has stayed on in Pelican Bay.
Jett, a black ex-soldier who lost his legs below

the knees, from an IED, brown eyes, and angry to be alive.

We get to know our two men, their pasts and current status, and later, lots of action, an injured military dog, an ex who turns up, children in danger and a heartwarming HFN.
I love a wounded warrior tale, plus adding a military dog, and it's a gem for me.

Belgian Malinois

Jett is in a wheelchair, was adopted, thinks he has nothing to live for, is mad and depressed. Being on the Animal Refuge center gives him more to think about.

Sawyer has a horrible family, drug dealers, and he likes his quiet times on the sanctuary. Jett makes him think about his life and he feels Jett is who he'd been waiting for. His ex is a terrible person, who shows up to take him back.

I like all of the characters in this series, and this story was very exciting and emotional. Our guys are steamy hot in bed.

This author has given me so many wonderful stories, and I look forward to more.
ENJOY !

I don’t know if it’s because I got bored with the series or it has less and less quality but I found this one just merely entertaining . The first book still remains my favorite. This one seemed shorter and it had a bad case of insta love which I don’t appreciate in books. I don’t think I’ll go on with the series.

Where were the trigger warnings, Sloane?

Seriously...where were they? I checked, and I didn’t see any. (I’ll list the warnings that should have been included at the bottom of my review).

Sawyer’s retelling of Marcus’ abuse was intense and didn’t skimp on the details. It made *me* extremely uncomfortable and raised my anxiety, so I can’t imagine how someone with triggers for domestic abuse and rape would react.

I’m going to give this author the benefit of the doubt, because authors who don’t include necessary trigger warnings instantly lose my respect, and I don’t want that to be the case here.

Moving on.

Jett was the highlight of the book. Yes, he was gruff and stubborn, but I enjoyed how the author slowly peeled his layers back. He was more than his injury, and it’s clear that he needed something, or someone, to pull him out of his pity party.

Jett’s work with Apollo was so lovely to see. They were kindred spirits. In many ways, Jett was very much a battered, scared pup. The trust they built with each other was so heartwarming, and I was happy to see Jett find something he enjoyed doing.

Sawyer was both kind and firm when it came to Jett. He was very soft with him but also knew when to show tough love. I enjoyed his interactions with Jerry (the mean Zebra) and also loved how often he had to put money in Newt’s swear jar. Same, Sawyer. Same.

The addition of his abusive ex, Marcus, was typical and unsurprising. Even with the “twist” at the end, I didn’t love the storyline.

Sawyer forgiving/empathizing with Marcus was beyond frustrating. Despite the “reasons” that contributed to his abusive nature, Marcus was a vile person and did things to Sawyer that were unforgivable.

I appreciated that the author gave the villain some layers, but it just didn’t work for me.

So, unfortunately this was not the 5-star read I expected it to be.

The lack of trigger warnings was very disappointing. That’s an immediate 1 star deduction for me.

Another star gets removed because, well, this book was kinda all over the place. Messy, if you will.

There was so much back and forth between Jett and Sawyer that it was hard to keep track of where they stood half the time.

It was very frustrating reading the hot and cold nature of both men. This wishy washy behavior didn’t always make sense, either. Some of it even felt immature. Drama for the sake of drama, aka the kiss of death for me.

Overall, I expected more. The book was decent, the characters were mostly just okay, and it was nice to see some familiar faces, but it just didn’t quite hit the spot.

———

**Trigger Warnings (that should have been included!!!)
- Physical Abuse (domestic)
- Emotional Abuse (domestic)
- Attempted Gang Rape
- Nonconsensual Drugging
- Coercion/Dubious Consent
- Mentions of Suicide/Suicidal Ideation

I could be missing more, and I don’t care to go back and reread Sawyer’s sad, disturbing tale, but you get the gist.

**********Contains Spoilers**********

All I can is Sloane Kennedy has done it again. Another heartbreakingly beautiful read. Sawyer has been living in Pelican Bay and working as the Vet for the Wildlife Sanctuary for the last year. They’ve made him part of their family but he stays on the outside. Sawyer has been hiding and running from his ab*sive a*sehole of an ex, who told Sawyer how the dress, talk and act. He made Sawyer feel like he was worthless with the emotional, physical and verbal ab*se that he’d constantly dish out. It was easier to just go along with Marcus wanted as it was a way to protect himself, he basically became a robot. Sawyer was finally able to escape Marcus when one of the guys that Marcus had hired to all have s*x with Sawyer while Marcus watched, telling them that Sawyer was in on it could tell that Sawyer didn’t want it and was obviously dr*gged so he knocked Marcus out, covered Sawyer with a blanket and got him to safety. He was funnily enough called Saint, totally fitting. He asked Sawyer where he’d be heading and gave him some cash to get by. He told him that his uncle is the vet in a small town called Pelican Bay and he’s probably be retiring soon so that could be a place to settle. Which is where Sawyers eventually ends up.

The newest resident of the Wildlife Sanctuary is Jett, Maddox’s army buddy and is completely bitter at Maddox for saving him since he’s now confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life after losing his legs while on tour due to a roadside b*mb. Jett and Maddox lost the rest of their team/brothers. Jett has given up on life and just wants to be left alone. He knows deep down that it isn’t Maddox’s fault but just wants someone to blame. He’s making everyone’s life difficult with his constant verbal jabs. Both Sawyer and Jett are hurting in their own ways. Usually insta-love stories annoy me but since both Jett and Sawyer have been through so much it doesn’t surprise me that they’d grab on to each other and any moment of happiness that they can get, so it didn’t bother me with the quickness of their relationship. Their chemistry is off the charts, as well as hot as f*ck. I loved seeing Jett and Sawyer slowly open up to each other and learn to be vulnerable together. It was a beautiful thing. I loved seeing Jett and Maddox become friends/brothers again and forgive and forget. Sawyer and Jett finally found the people and the place to call home. I’m looking forward to reading Theo and Linc’s story next and I’m hoping that Riley will eventually get his own book, but he’s got some growing up to do yet since he’s still a teenager. I’d definitely recommend this book, series and author to everyone.

4.8 stars. I have been counting down the days to this release and it does not disappoint. First off, I love how Sloane Kennedy doesn't really do the hurt/comfort thing. She pairs two totally broken, wrecked characters and creates something completely breathtaking from the wreckage. And she doesn't shy away from tough topics.

Sawyer: a wild life vet on the run from an abusive ex.

Jett: A military vet on the brink of suicide after a war zone injury changes his life.

These two are thrown together and it's fireworks from the moment Sawyer knocks Jett out of his wheelchair. The chemistry is of the charts as much as both men try to fight it. And when they finally do come together it's *chef's kiss*. Sawyer and Jett may have given up fighting for their own lives, but together they learn to fight for each other and themselves again.

More than Enough was moderately angsty (But if you know me, you know my angst tolerance is epically high. This may be a high angst read for others). This is a book that will make you feel something. It's going to stick with you.

All of our old friends from the first three Pelican Bay books are here: Nolan, Dallas, Isaac, Maddox, Newt, Cam, Ford. Getting to visit with them again feels like going home.

My only critiques:
I wish there had been more of a focus on Jett's mental health. When he arrived in Pelican Bay, he had every intention of committing suicide. That kind of struggle doesn't just go away, no matter how hard you fall in love. I felt like his issues were glossed over a bit.

After the 60% mark, the book felt a bit rushed. I wish it had taken its time and been a bit more drawn out. But, in fairness, that may be just me not wanting to leave Pelican Bay and wanting more of Sawyer and Jett.

Turning the last page left me with all the feels and so much longing for more. I sincerely hope these men have an active role in the next installment.

Wow just like the previous book in the pelican bay series more than enough is an incredible read.
The writing is just so captivating that it’s as if you are in the story with all the characters and you can feel what they are feeling.

Honestly my heart truly went out to both sawyer and Jett, who in the book showcase the pain and suffering they are experiencing but through it they came together developing a relationship despite the difficulties they faced honestly it was beautiful.

I’d definitely recommend this book it won’t be a mistake.
