Rook Unleashed is set in the Protectors World and ties into the Feathered Protectors series as they fight against the evil group Omens of Death. This fast-paced novel will have you gripping your device as you race towards the end.
Pepper Paris fell in love with the idea of love at a young age. As dreams of love changed as she grew up, so did the ideas for her romance stories. Kick-ass heroines who find love in fun and sexy ways make for the best type of romances. A spicy love story filled with everyday problems turn her stories into escapes from reality a welcome adventure.
She also writes thrillers under the name Paris Morgan while fighting zombies under the pen name Alathia Paris Morgan.
I bought this because I loved the idea of a squirrel shifter. However, every other part of this short story was underwhelming. The synopsis hinted that this is a sapphic romance story, but the instant turbo horny and no other relationship development did nothing for me. What really drove the score down the most to me is that this 60 page short is written exactly like fan fiction; there is an assumption you have read all the other books in this "Protectors World" series as nothing at all is explained. Only the MC and her brother get anything close to an introduction, and all other characters, factions, organizations, and aspects/mechanics of the worlds are referenced and included with no explanation to what is going on or why I should care about any of these characters.
I could put up with the sudden addition of towards the end, but the part of the plot is a severe turn off and is the straw that pushes this all the way to 1 star for me.
I genuinely couldn't get into this book. I don't know if it's just not my cup of tea when it comes to writing styles, but I just couldn't. I skipped on into the book to see if it would pick up so that I could go back and just drag the story along with me to get to a point that I enjoyed but I couldn't find one. Points for the cover, though. That's what brought me in. Well, and the idea of squirrel shifters. Because, really, who would've thought?
I think this was an interesting short story on a very different type of criminal shifter organization, but I didn’t realize it was a short story and not a novel.
At 60 pages this is a short story not a novel by it is an enjoyable one. Reading others in the series would help as well, but it does work as a standalone. Well written with a good premise. I will be reading more in this series and by this author.
I have read books about different shifters but I have never read a book about a person that could shift into a squirrel. I thought it was great that Rook took the business in a little bit of a different direction.
