Do you see the smoke cloud above my head following me everywhere? Nope, I’m not smoking weed to calm my nerves. I don’t smoke at all! The truth is, I usually create smoke when I’m cooking and accidentally burning ingredients. But this time, the reason for the smoke is not my lack of culinary skills—it’s my brain cells sizzling after reading this mind-numbing, intelligent, horrifying, and captivating story. It felt like my brain was dropped into a deep-fryer of literature.
My advice: don’t even try to put this book down. I did—and failed miserably. Not only were my hands glued to the pages, but my mind was completely hooked by the intriguing, action-packed story.
Did you love One? Of course, you did. I won’t accept “no” for an answer.
How about The Passengers? Personally, I gave it five gazillion stars.
But here’s the shocker: this book might actually be better than both. Yes—it’s that good. It instantly shot into my Top 10 Reads of 2020 and earned a spot on my all-time favorites list. The story takes place in the same universe as One and The Passengers, with plenty of connections and references. Reading those first will definitely give you a deeper understanding of the Minders universe.
Reading this book felt like binge-watching the best episodes of Black Mirror and Doctor Who at the same time—while sipping a chilled Chardonnay. Euphoria might be the only word that fits.
Now, let me give you a glimpse of this brain-frying, IQ-demolishing story:
“Knowledge is power.” International hackers are desperate to expose governments’ darkest secrets, but the UK has a counter-strategy. Politicians, secret service agents, and scientists band together to form a secret initiative. Their goal? To recruit five extraordinary individuals whose unique neurological condition—synesthesia (the rare ability to “hear colors” or “see sounds,” found in just 4.4% of the global population)—makes their brains capable of storing massive amounts of data.
These recruits are called MINDERS.
The government encodes limitless amounts of data into a single strand of DNA, which is stored inside a plastic bead. That bead is then injected into the “unused” sections of the Minders’ brains. The result? Great Britain becomes permanently unhackable.
Meet the Minders (and a mysterious outsider):
• Flick Kennedy (36): Once a restaurateur, now a bartender. Smart, fast learner, but scarred after her disastrous DNA soulmate match revealed her “perfect partner” was actually a serial killer. She joins the program after solving the recruitment puzzle and relocates to a quiet coastal town in Suffolk, carrying the DNA bead. Everything seems fine—until she meets Elijah, a wealthy artist back in town. She’s forbidden from emotional involvement, but… you can guess what happens.
• Charlie Manchester (25): A former graphic designer, now living in a luxury hotel. He forms new friendships, but he’s an empty shell of who he was. Before the procedure, he battled anxiety, pain, and sorrow. Afterward, he can’t even feel pain—literally. They could cut off his leg without anesthesia, and he’d feel nothing.
• Sinead Kelly (33): An ex-office worker who escapes her emotionally abusive husband and moves to Sunderland for a fresh start. She integrates into the community, but when she notices signs of abuse in a new mother’s marriage, her past trauma resurfaces.
• Bruno York (39): A devoted stay-at-home father to his autistic son. Loyal, emotional, and loving—but his place in the program is built on a lie. His son accidentally solved the puzzle on his phone. Now Bruno is plagued by hallucinations and violent voices. When his wife dies in a driverless car crash with her lover, Bruno spirals into vengeance, transforming into a serial killer.
And finally, the key to everything:
• Emilia: A woman suffering from amnesia, “rescued” by a man who claims to be her husband. But something doesn’t feel right. Who is she really—and how is she connected to the Minders?
Now, before I overshare (again), let me just say this: brace yourself for the last chapters. Wear a helmet. Protect your brain. The ending is full of jaw-dropping, soul-crushing twists that will leave you reeling. The finale had me feeling like Chazz Palminteri’s detective in The Usual Suspects. I didn’t drop my coffee mug—but I nearly dropped an entire case of wine.
Because now I know: the greatest trick the devil ever pulled…
