Lincoln
The introduction sets the stage for who Lincoln was and why coming from humble beginnings and suffering many failures he turned into one of our greatest influencers. He’s a lifelong learner and emerged himself in reading books and once he learned a local farmer had a book he never read he wanted it too.
He loved speeches and realized the knowledge is its own reward especially when you are able to learning and . Leaders are readers but sometimes stpeople have difficulties reading. The author suggests several ways to enhance your knowledge deciding on a place to read, and dreams never die so feed your dreams and starve your doubts.
Stand up for others and don’t back down as the author describes several incidents that Lincoln encountered. Ther is a price for standing up and the act of standing up for others is a big deal he states in your personal life and even in a grand scale. When you do that believe it or not you reaffirm your goodness. Chapter 3 describes how he was a communicator for people. Being empathetic and eloquent using the right vocabulary and important how you engage with others. Are you speaking loudly enough, too quickly, slowly or monotone? Practice and rehearse the speakers maybe even as I do at times before a show tape yourself to judge what is right or needs to be changed. Move past the pain I’ll leave to readers hard but necessary accept criticism. That’s not always easy.criticism causes insight . Lincoln was skilled in controlling his emotions while under attack. Criticism improves communication and can open the door for innovation and change and believe it or not create friendships. Make decisions quickly is chapter 6 and 7 how he priorities family and his losses. It’s often hard to let people be themselves and how to outwork your competitors. Doing what you love and love what you do so paramount to your success. Outwork competition!
Always be prepared page 75 describes the first half of his journey and how his father’s way of life impacted him and his family. You have to be mentally prepared pages 77-78 and morally too. In conclusion above all else Be Honest! Honesty is compassionate, freeing and healthy but most of all a lifestyle we should all emulate. Honest Abe also the author states and pressed in to his true self his accomplishments serve as a beacon for us all to follow. Well informed and each chapter vital to understanding the many messages this book and individual chapters would be crest for workshops in leadership and teaching young people and older adults the importance of how to become a vital and positive leader. In my younger days, a few family vacations focused on Lincoln or things in which Lincoln was involved (The Civil War for example). I enjoyed the snippets about Lincoln in this book. It was an easier read than most business/leadership books, and it held my interest (whereas most of the books written on this subject have not).

Useful

I have always admired Abraham Lincoln. Was good to learn more about him and his qualities. The book is useful too, if you want to make an intentional move to being more like him. It offers suggestions to get you started. It is not long, but it has enough in it to get you practising more intentional ways to improve. As I said, useful.

It was a good summation of principles to follow, with Lincoln as the anecdote. Mostly a Cliff Notes-like version of others’ biographies mixed with common quotes like “readers are leaders”.
