Rate this book
At the heart of the snowy wilds, silence cuts deeper than a blade.

Jarin has one wish—to claim the legendary sword of guardians and liberate his homeland. But when his father brings home a mute girl, the lonely warrior is captivated and vows to find the source of her affliction. When tragedy strikes, Jarin sets out to find the witches who can see into the future only to be assaulted by a devastating secret.

With his home and heart in ruin, Jarin takes an oath of vengeance. But the road to justice is fraught with savage beasts and a sorcerer who will stop at nothing to realize his twisted ambitions.

In his quest for revenge, will Jarin sacrifice the only thing that separates him from the monsters he had sworn to destroy?

Lumi’s Spell is the gripping first book in the Lumi series, a sweeping fantasy epic where a Japanese legend meets the untamed beauty of a Nordic landscape.

Ulana Dabbs is the author of Storms of Tomorrow and Lumi's Spell. Her books combine her love of video games and romance. Her fascination with books started even before she learned how to read, and her earliest memory is of her holding a book with a dragon on the cover and ‘reading’ it to her mum.
She's a big fan of the Final Fantasy franchise. She fell in love with fantasy after playing her first ever FF title, Final Fantasy VIII. The game took her on an emotional journey like no other, filled with magic, romance, friendship, and adventure.
She lives in the south of England, with her dog, Yuffie (a name that will resonate with Final Fantasy VII fans). Autumn is her favourite season and she loves nothing more than to curl up with a blanket and get lost in a good book or a video game.

The entrancing Lumi’s Spell asks, “Can you love someone who took everything from you?” And that’s what sets it apart from the rest of the crowded fantasy field. Ulana Dabbs, an author you’ll be happy you’ve discovered at the beginning of what will surely be a long and distinguished career, has brought a fresh and eloquent voice to the genre. This is a novel you simply have to read.

Lumi's Spell is a fantasy action/adventure that defies formula on many levels. There are some standard tropes of the genre -- the Chosen One, the magic sword, and the Dark Lord -- but these are not used as you'd expect. At almost every turn, the plot takes a left when the reader expects a right. Dabbs has not forsaken the human element in favor of detail-heavy world-building and heavy-handed magic systems. Instead, the world of Lumi's Spell is believable and relatable because it is populated by believable and relatable characters. Characters you root for and care about, characters you loathe and despise, and even characters that inspire both in equal measures.

It has been a long time since I've found a modern fantasy novel that brought me the wonder and joy I first felt when I read Lloyd Alexander's The Book of Three as a kid. Lumi's Spell did just that.

This is a brilliant, Viking inspired fantasy story. Dabbs has a way of drawing you into Jarin’s life from the outset, making you immediately care about him (even during his more immature moments). The world is richly detailed and beautifully described. Jarin’s relationship with the titular Lumi develops in a very unexpected way, so kudos for that twist I actually didn’t see coming! I will certainly be continuing this series. Dabbs is a fantastic writer.

How fantasy should be written.

This is a magnificent story.

Vivid descriptions to make you feel as you are there experiencing it all with the characters. Only one example: "Pine trees, in the livery of white, lined our way like an army of men marching to battle. The mountains in the distance were angry and unmoving."

The hero isn't a superhero and must learn and overcome his flaws and fight real battles where he can be wounded, unlike in some stories where the hero is somehow always protected (The Way of Kings) or is the best of the best at whatever they do and often at many things. This story isn't at all just fighting monsters and evil either. There is so much more plot and twists. The battles are short and shockingly realistic. There are no long, long spells of slow traveling to get somewhere in which the characters have to encounter random monsters to fight that have nothing to do with the main plot but are only a device to keep tension during such long meandering pages. This style of writing still happens in modern popular fantasy like The Name of the Wind where the first 100-200 pages of the book are terribly slow. This story moves those passages along with skillful ability and a practiced hand, with much superior writing to those aforementioned. Even if other stories somehow sift to the most popular of recent times, you should consider this one.
And if you're looking for a story that takes all of the best aspects of fantasy and uses them correctly, this is the book to read.

I love anything and everything with a good viking vibe. And I love fantasy. This was the perfect blend of the concepts. Lumi’s Spell is compelling and beautifully written, and Jarin’s story touched my heart. Also, I came to love and respect Fjola, a great side character!

If Conan were an angsty teen

Beautifully written prose with a cohesive, compelling story. My problem is the MC. He is whiney, inconsistent, short-sighted, and, worst of all, powerless! Every conflict he is in is resolved by someone else or via deus ex machina. The character traits that rang true for a 10 or 13 year old fall flat for an 18 year old warrior/leader. Not sure I can read the next two books.

A strong beginning to a fantasy series. Ulana paints vivid scenes and both books I have read by her have unique twists and turns. I’m excited to see what’s in store for Jarin next.
