Fleur Fenwick, a firebinder, is on the run. After they killed her friend, she unearths a secret that can spell life or death for all firebinders, including her brother. When the police get involved, the detective assigned to protect her not only sends her heart racing, but also seems to know the reason there are forces who want firebinders dead.
Ewan Blair, Cynn Cruor warrior, returns to the city to fulfill a promise he made to a woman-child. While on patrol with fellow Cynn Cruor Blake Strachan, he encounters a beautiful woman who not only holds her own in a fight with the Scatha Cruor but also sets his blood afire with a desire he never thought possible.
Dead bodies start piling up, illuminated manuscripts with hidden clues, and Fleur’s brother goes missing. It’s a race against time to get firebinders to safety. Through it all, the sensual conflagration between Fleur and Ewan is undeniable.
Some stories stay with you forever. Some characters feel like old friends. Isobelle Cate writes both. Her books are full of love that surprises, second chances that feel real, and people who’ve been through heartbreak but find the courage to love again. Every story she tells reminds us that hope is never lost, and love always finds a way.
Her characters are alive, flawed, brave, funny, and achingly human. Whether it’s a sweeping romance or a touch of magic, her stories pull you in and refuse to let go.
Off the page, Isobelle is just as captivating. She’s warm, thoughtful, and a little delightfully quirky someone who loves quiet afternoons with a book, the smell of baking drifting through the house, and the gentle rhythm of crocheting. She lives in Manchester with her family and their tiny, fearless goldfish, Ninja, who somehow makes every day a little more interesting.
Readers don’t just come for her stories, they stay for her heart. Isobelle’s words comfort, inspire, and remind us that even when life feels impossible, love has a way of finding us.
I was soo looking forward to this book as the Firebinders intrigued me when I first learnt of them in the The Cynn Cruor Bloodline Series and was not disappointed. We learn so much more about the Firebinders through Fleur who is smart like book smart as well as lethal with ... (well you will have to find out) as well as learn what she and her brother have been through while staying hidden in order not to be killed, what she doesn't expect is Ewan. The Cynn Cruor are still fighting pockets of Scatha Cruor even though they cut of the head of the snake and when he sees Fleur holding her own against them feelings he never expected start to bubble to the surface. I loved how they tried to fight the feelings they have for each other and guard their secrets, but when death and danger keep coming at Fleur all bets are off. The suspense in not know who or what is after Fleur along with not know if it is the same that has been tracking and killing other Firebinders since forever keeps you turning the page, along with the twists and build up of attraction between Fleur and Ewan!!
The overview of this story is absolutely electrifying. Fleur Fenwick being hunted right after uncovering a deadly secret instantly sets the stakes sky-high and her desperation to protect her brother makes the danger feel even more real. The moment Detective Ewan Blair enters the picture, knowing far more than he should and igniting something fierce inside her, you can already feel the tension smoldering.
Ewan’s return as a Cynn Cruor warrior, the brutal encounters with Scatha Cruor, and Fleur fighting right beside him add so much action and fire to the premise. With bodies piling up, ancient manuscripts hiding dangerous clues, and her brother disappearing, the story feels like a heart, pounding race from page one.
And through all the chaos, the heat between Fleur and Ewan is impossible to ignore—danger and desire crashing together in the best way.
I liked the plot a lot. The author has the ability to take your hand and lead you to a world where everything is possible and suddently the impossible happens.
