Der Jukebox Mann

Johnny Bergman ist der Jukebox- Mann. In jedem Café der Gegend hat er eine Wurlitzer oder eine Seeburg platziert, er kennt jeden Elvis-Song und weiß im Schlaf, welches Lied welche Nummernkombination hat. Er lebt in seinem Auto, einem alten Duett, und fährt Tag für Tag übers Land, repariert die Musikboxen und legt die neuen Platten mit den allerneuesten Hits auf. Seit den fünfziger Jahren ist er so unterwegs und kann sich nicht entsinnen, wann er das letzte Mal Urlaub hatte. Doch nun kommen die sechzigerJahre in Gang, und die scheinen nichts Gutes zu bringen. Kennedy wird ermordet, in den Läden gibt es Plattenspieler zu kaufen, und das Radio spielt den lieben langen Tag Popmusik frei Haus. Die Ära der einfachen Cafés auf dem Lande ist vorbei. Auch die goldene Zeit der Jukeboxen geht zu Ende - und damit steht Johnny an einer Zeitenwende. Der Weg zu einem neuen Leben führt ihn zunächst in die Vergangenheit, zu dem alten Bauernhof, auf dem er als Pflegekind gelebt hat - und zu seinem Bruder Seved, der damals auf geheimnisvolle Weise verschwunden war. Schließlich trifft Bergman Elisabeth wieder, eine Kellnerin aus einem der Cafés, mit deren Sohn Lennart er Freundschaft schließt. Ist das der Beginn eines neuen Lebens?

Åke Edwardson is a Swedish author of detective fiction, and a professor at Gothenburg University, the city where many of his Inspector Winter novels are set. Edwardson has had many jobs, including a journalist and press officer for the United Nations, and his crime novels have made him a three-time winner of the Swedish Crime Writers' Award for best crime novel. His first novel to be translated into English, in 2005, was Sun and Shadow. The second, Never End, followed in 2006.

Even though this book seems to be quite boring at the beginning, it really has some depth to it. Don't expect anything great or exciting to happen. It's pretty mellow, describing the life of a restless man. This book is perfect for those who are about to make some big changes in their lives. There are so many passages that trigger reflecting your own past and future. Figuring out who you are, what has happened to you and where you want to be in life are basically thoughts that are accompanying the protagonist. Plus the music facts on the side are really nice :)
