When it’s time to write in class, one child feels like she has absolutely nothing to say. But suddenly—ker-plink!—one drop, one tiny thought, hits her. Before long she’s caught in a shower of funny phrases, a whirlwind of adjectives and verbs, and a downpour of huge ideas. BOOM, CRASH! It’s a gigantic brainstorm of creativity for her to soak up and play in! With writing prompts and a glossary in the back matter, this story will inspire imagination and ingenuity in all readers.
This gorgeous book is a teacher's dream! Our main character is worried about her writing assignment and has no ideas until a rainstorm of ideas hits--wait, make that a Brainstorm! This Brainstorm is filled with nouns, adverbs, alliterative phrases, adjectives, and verbs, making it such a great book for the classroom. Levington's writing is filled with lyrical language, rhyming text, and onomatopoeia, making the book a joy to read, and Kronreif's art is colorful, playful, and imaginative--kids will love reading all of the phrases and words on each page! The back matter is filled with writing prompts that will support learning as well as a glossary that defines the terms used within the book. Highly recommended for all classrooms, homes, and libraries!
Did you ever feel a rain drop on your face or see one on the car window and wonder if you were imagining it because it isn't raining? A small girl hates it when she has to write in school because she thinks that she doesn't have any ideas. She clenches her pencil and looks around at the gloomy day, and then KER-PLINK! She gets that little itch, that germ of an idea that isn't quite there yet. Slowly, slowly, then faster and faster.........the ideas and the raindrops come, first in adverbs and verbs, silly phrases, sentences, a deluge, and she is off!
I love a good rhyme, and this whole book rhymes, and very well. A rainstorm/brainstorm is a terrific depiction of the creative process. But more. Not only does the whole book rhyme, the lines are not straight on the page. They curve, they swoop around, they whoosh and swoosh and moosh all over the place, flying among the colorful and swoopy pictures. This little girl's adventure in finding her way to starting a story is a pleasure to read, and I think a single child or a class full would enjoy hearing it and sharing it. There is a page full of writing prompts in the back (cloudy with a chance of ideas), and a short glossary (a tornado of terminology). A fun and educational picture book for writers big and small.
I just adore Rebecca's rhyming text as a young child brainstorms what to write. Nouns, adjectives, and adverbs rain down until an idea forms! And it's easy to get swept up in the fun illustrations. With additional back matter that includes writing prompts and definitions- this is the perfect addition for any reading and writing classroom!
A wonderful book with beautiful illustrations! This book can be a great tool to use in classrooms where kids who usually struggle to come up with words can take comfort in knowing that it's okay to take their time and that huge ideas may come from the least-expected places. The perfect rhyme along with the beautiful illustrations make this book a fun read-aloud!

This one is a 3.5 for me. I'm fortunate to only rarely, if ever, experience writer's block. My brain tends to be filled with all sorts of ideas or thoughts I want to express on paper. This has always been the case, even when the teacher's assigned prompt wasn't particularly compelling. But I know quite well that many professional writers and many student writers struggle with just getting started. In this picture book, which is cunningly filled with all sorts of words and inspiration woven into the digital artwork, the narrator, a young girl, struggles to put something down on the page while the rest of her classmates are busily writing. As is the case with those who have been in her situation, she dawdles, procrastinates, searches her "cloudy" (unpaged) brain for inspiration, and then finally, slowly, drop by drop, inspiration arrives. The rhyming text describes this process as words, phrases, and possible topics fill her brain in a playful way. The torrent of words, including those grouped into parts of speech such as adjectives and verbs are depicted vividly, flowing across the page in various shapes and forms, mimic how inspiration strikes, showing all this activity BEFORE she even starts to write. Her facial expressions and body language during this process is worth noting as is the change in the weather and the potted plant on the window sill, which blossoms while she's working. Continuing with the weather focus, the back matter, which teachers and budding writers will find useful, includes 18 writing prompts ["Cloudy with a Chance of Ideas!"] as well as "A Tornado of Terminology, a helpful cheat sheet related to elements of writing and parts of speech. The book's very title is imaginative too since the creative process is described and depicted as a rainstorm but is actually something of a brainstorm. Those seeking a place to start with their own writing might find this book useful and encouraging while writing teachers will want to share it with students as a reminder that ideas come in all sorts of forms, and sometimes it takes time to let those storm clouds gather. What an entertaining read! It makes writing seem so active.
As one who struggled with the anxiety of on-the-spot writing assignments from elementary through grad school, this refreshing poem picture book speaks to me on a profound level. Everyone’s writing process is different, and some of us—like the little girl in this book—need lots of time to ponder and pace and stare into space before the ideas come and we’re ready to put pen to paper. Levington beautifully captures this process with an extended storm metaphor and fun, inventive rhyming couplets that also sneak in some grammar and story element vocab:
I’m sopping wet with wacky thoughts of characters and twisty plots, of images and bits of dreams, of settings, scenes, and quirky themes!
Kronreif’s illustrations are sweet and playful and work wonderfully to play up one of my favorite parts of the book: all the “extra” words, phrases (“sheep should shower in a shed”), titles (“The Dolphin Who Couldn’t Tango”), and drawings that rain down on our young writer’s head as her ideas gain momentum. You can tell the author had a field day with these, and readers will enjoy turning the book this way and that to read them all.
Back matter includes a downpour of engaging writing prompts and a “Tornado of Terminology” that succinctly explains the parts of speech and various story elements. This book will be a dream for writing teachers and, no doubt, an inspiration for young writers!
I actually found this new title right after doing an author presentation with several 1st and 2nd grade classrooms during which we talked about brainstorming and my spin on the idea--brain soup (not to be confused with zombie fare). That's usually how I explain where my ideas come from--all the things that get mixed up in my head to pour out on the page. I was anxious to read this title and not in the least disappointed. Wonderfully illustrated, Brainstorm! weaves well-executed rhyme into a jaunty narrative about the challenge of filling that blank page. Whether you consider yourself a writer or not, we have all, from kindergarten to whenever, faced that blank page, and at one or more points, found it daunting. Brainstorm! turns that challenge into a fun adventure that should get any reader-writer, no matter how old, brainstorming ideas to share. I heartily recommend this one for every classroom, and not just the young ones. I found as a middle grade teacher that picture books made concepts that my super-savvy and too-old-for-their-britches tweens and early teens fun and engaging by tapping back into the wonder of the kids they still were beneath all the rest of it. Put in on your shelves, teachers! You'll use it and enjoy it. :)
BRAINSTORM has me SO excited to get back to the classroom this year, teaching...writing! Watching the little girl in this story play in the puddles of possibility reminded me of the joy of writing. Silly stories, adventurous stories, fantastical stories.....what will she choose? And watching her struggle in the beginning, reminded me of how a lot of my students feel when the word "writing" is first mentioned. There can be a lot of pressure to come up with a "good" idea. Luckily, this book is just what students need! This book really turns writing into a fun adventure. The onomatopoeia is so clever and the rhyme gives the book a bouncy feel. The illustrations are gorgeous, filled with story ideas of their own, and will appeal to both younger AND older kids. That's no easy feat. Plus, the back matter has vocabulary and story prompts and for those shy writers who need that extra push. This book is simply a teacher's dream. I will definitely be using it this fall and I can't wait to see what my students brainstorm!
After reading Brainstorm!, I will never again think that failing to get words on paper is writer's block: nope, it's take-your-time-and-let-the-ideas-come. Like a rain shower, a brainstorm, we learn, starts with drips and builds. From a tiny thought to words and pictures and phrases and sentences, Rebecca Gardyn Levington creates joy in presenting the wacky wanderings of a mind open to ideas. We get caught up and pulled along by her lovely rhyming text and the sing-song of images: salty strawberry salsa and the like. That she also introduces parts of speech is icing on a mighty delicious cake. Kate Kronreif's illustrations are delightful, amplifying the storm of ideas of which we see we are all capable.
I love the idea of parents, teachers, and librarians sharing this book with children, empowering them to believe in themselves as thinkers of remarkable thoughts, worthy of getting down on paper.
Children for whom writing doesn't come naturally will especially relate to this book.
In this story, a young girl sits at her desk. While the other students around her quickly fill their pages, she remains stuck. Drop-by-drop, ideas trickle in until they become a full-blow storm. However, this is not when she writes. It's only after the whirlwind passes and her mind becomes clear that she starts to put pen to paper.
To me this story emphasizes that it's okay to take your time to collect your ideas...even if it's a bit slower than others. As the mom of kids with dyslexia and executive function issues, this subtle and loving reminder that writing doesn't look the same for everyone. And that's okay!
The back matter also has engaging writing prompts, so kids can practice managing their own "brainstorms." We're looking forward to trying some of them out.
I absolutely love this book! As a former teacher, I know how difficult it is for many kids when told that it's "writing time." In this adorable book, the main character doesn't know what to write about until kerplink, plip, plop, ideas slowly start to fall on her and soon become a storm of ideas...a BRAINSTORM! This book is the perfect antidote to "What can I write?" anxiety.
Levington's lyrical language, rhyming text, and Kronreif's beautiful illustrations meld together to make a book that kids will want to read over and over. It's a fun read-aloud, but children will also love reading it independently as they find words and ideas that "fall" onto each page. Teachers will love it for those reasons, too, but also for the backmatter, which includes a "Tornado of Terminology" and a page filled with writing prompts.
I highly recommend this book for kids and teachers alike!
Inspiration abounds in this energetic exploration of creative brainstorming. BRAINSTORM is the story of a child facing the blank page for a classroom writing assignment and becoming receptive to a shower, then a storm, then a flood of ideas. A must-have for any young writer who’s anxious about idea generation! Delightful rhyming verse and joyful pastel illustrations with pops of bright yellow enhance this book’s kid-appeal. Teachers will love that it’s loaded with literary terms—like “phrase,” “sentence,” and “plot”—and names many parts of speech. The back matter includes story-idea generators and useful writing terminology. Any child setting out to learn how to write would benefit from reading BRAINSTORM, at home or at school—and take joy in the experience. When you turn the last page, you feel awash in creativity.
Challenged with an in-school-spur-of-the-moment writing assignment, a child compares her mind to the gray gloom of a cloudy day until.... plip, plop! The ideas start as tiny drops until – whoosh! – memories, thoughts and emotion swell into a powerful word storm, engaging her every sense, showering her with inspiration and empowering her imagination. Rebecca Gardyn Levington’s delightful rollicking rhyme seamlessly pairs with Kate Kronreif’s bold, yet whimsical illustrations and invites readers to join the main character – whirling in the wind, splashing in the puddles, basking in the splendor of the resulting rainbow and ultimately, rolling up their own sleeves, ready to write. Packed with a 'tornado of terminology' and writing prompts (included as backmatter), it's not only a teacher's dream, but a must for every child (or grownup!) who needs a creative spark. A true joy to read!
Wow! I absolutely love this inventive and encouraging book.
Brainstorm! uses energetic rhyme to follow a girl in class as she struggles to develop ideas for her writing. As a Brainstorm starts, the words whirl and fly, and phrases and sentences form.
The author cleverly weaves in terms such as 'adjective' and 'adverb' in a natural way that explains their meaning without it feeling like a 'lesson.'
At the end of the book there is a page chock-full of interesting writing prompts as well as a 'Tornado of Terminology.'
The illustrations are vibrant and modern, with a beautiful soft palette of blues, pinks, and yellows.
This book is perfect for every child learning to write, especially children who struggle with writing. Every classroom should have a copy!
BRAINSTORM explores a relatable challenge many kids face when attempting to write: the words just won’t flow! Gardyn Levington uses the clever structure of a brain-STORM to help kids gain confidence and embrace a sense of playfulness so they can move past writer’s block and enjoy writing. Her delightful rhyme has a positive tone that affirms and inspires readers’ imagination. The text pairs perfectly with Kate Kronreif’s fresh illustration style, which captures kids’ creative worlds and the idea generation process. Back matter offers exercises to help kids generate ideas, and a list of writing terminology that will be a great resource for education contexts. BRAINSTORM is a wonderful addition to any child’s bookshelf, and definitely belongs in every school!
This debut picture book by poet Rebecca Gardyn Levington is brilliantly crafted! With swirling rhyme and twirling (sometimes upside down) illustrations on its pages, this story is a clever, creative exploration of parts of language and story construction as the main character who has writer's block discovers herself literally in an inspiring "storm" of words, adjectives, adverbs, sentences, etc. This engaging, rhythmic read-aloud also includes a wonderful glossary and writing prompts in the back. Loved the color palette and how the illustrations interplay with the text. A great teaching tool!
This book is a joy! From Rebecca's fabulous, flawless, and playful rhymes to Kate's beautiful art in a delightful color pallete, I enjoyed every page. It's wonderful for children to know they are not alone when it comes brainstorming hurdles, I certainly have them myself, and this book is a perfect resource for teachers to use with students to encourage their creativity. The prompts and glossary in the back matter add even more value. And not just for teachers—a wonderful book for kids in that "I'm bored" moment when they need a reminder of all the magic they hold inside. Check it out, and let the "flood of possibility" flow!
Filled with beautiful illustrations and perfect rhyme, this book is a must have for any ELA classroom and personal library. Levington not only makes a child's problem of staring at a blank page without knowing what to write relatable, but also offers different solutions on how to come up with ideas when you are stuck--in the most engaging way. Children will enjoy the colorful illustrations and lyrical language. Teachers/parents will enjoy that their learner is learning or reviewing nouns, adjectives, onomatopoeias and alliteration (to name a few) without their child even realizing it! I cannot say enough about this amazing book and can't wait to use this with my students.
Have you ever felt stuck when it comes to writing? (I know I have!) In this lovely debut picture book by Rebecca Gardyn Levington, with playful illustrations by Kate Kronreif, ideas start to flow with a Ker-plink! and a Splat! Picking up speed, words rush in with a Boom! and Crash! Soon, it’s a full on Brainstorm! Gusts of nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs float through the text. And with a flood of possibilities, it’s time to write. Teachers and parents will appreciate the delightful drops of writing prompts and the Tornado of Terminology in the backmatter. Forecast: This picture book will take classrooms by storm this fall!
Who hasn't sat down to write and been COMPLETELY STUCK while everyone else around you seems to be working away, filled with ideas? This book perfectly captures that feeling, when your "cloudy brain" seems full of nothing and ideas are hard to come by. But then, as the story suggests, if you just take a moment to notice the smallest, tiniest thought, other thoughts will come in too, and soon in a flood. Told in rhyme, with lots of extra words on the page symbolizing the main character's flowing ideas, this book could help break through even the most stubborn case of writer's block. I love that there are some fun writing prompts in the back of the book, too.
I expected spot-on poetry and a beautiful story… I did not expect the educational aspect that is sneaked right in. This book would make a fun, lively read aloud that kids will likely read over and over again, or look at the pictures on their own. It’s also the perfect book to start a creative writing unit for teachers or homeschoolers, or to remind kids of when they “have nothing to write about.” As a bonus, it also incorporates grammar and writing terminology so it’s a great way to refresh on big concept ideas for writing.
What a wonderful picture book! BRAINSTORM bursts with fun, lyrical language, spot on poetry and lively illustrations. Readers will be inspired by the main character who struggles with a writing assignment, until her ideas begin to trickle. Then, a full brainstorm! The author seamlessly introduces nouns, verbs, and other parts of speech in a delightful, child-friendly way. The vibrant illustrations incorporate words, which spring off the page. BRAINSTORM! is a must-read for writing lessons and especially for kids who have difficulties putting their thoughts on paper.
What an inspirational and rollicking page-turner for kids (and adults like me)! This story of the creative process (a LITERAL brainstorm! brilliant!) is told in fun, flawless rhyme by Rebecca Gardyn Levington, with delightful illustrations by Kate Kronreif. To make matters more awesome, it features some great writing prompts and educational back matter that will encourage kids to go back again and again. I can imagine a future generation of writers looking back at this book as the thing that first got them started on their own creative journeys. Wonderful!
I love when I find a children's picture book that can also be read and enjoyed by older children. And this one provides encouragement and inspiration for adults as well. How do we find ideas? What words can we use to express ourselves and craft a great story? Turn the pages of author Levington's powerful new book and you and your children will discover a rainstorm of possibilities! With a valuable back matter that includes a glossary and writing prompts, this book is a winner! I highly recommend it.
If you've ever stared at the blank page not knowing what to write... you need a BRAINSTORM! When a teacher's assignment has a girl stumped, a storm erupts in her brain complete with flying adverbs and gusty adjectives. Before long she's dancing in puddles of ideas and sentences. The storm leaves "a flood of possibilities" and she is ready to write. A wonderful resource for teachers who can share ways to start writing a story: a silly phrase, a memory, a title. The illustrations are bright and active. Told in perfect read aloud rhyme.
Everyone knows what it’s like when we need to come up with ideas and there’s “nothing” there. Whether it’s fear of an idea not being good enough or there are too many things in our heads and there’s a gridlock that doesn’t allow any idea to get out, it can be a struggle. BRAINSTORM! shows thinkers of any age that, if you just allow it, by just letting words and thoughts free, they will ultimately “storm” in. This imaginative take on the flow of creativity, plus a downpour of writing prompts, it is the perfect tool to un-stick the stuck!
I loved this beautiful picture book! I am an elementary school teacher and I feel so many students (grade 1/2 upwards) would be able to relate to this story of a young person struggling to come up with ideas to write in class! I loved the metaphor of the rainstorm describing what it’s like when ideas start to flow! It’s a celebration of different terminology (e.g nouns, adjectives, adverbs, settings etc) in a fun, visual, exciting way! The illustrations are absolutely stunning too! Definitely a must have!!
If you have ever faced a blank page with a child reluctant to write or hating the idea of writing, Brainstorm may just be the secret sauce you need. Written in rhyme sweeping you across the page and unleashing words and ideas, the reader discovers everyone struggles to write. Add a dose of playfulness and inspiring images that create a storm of possibilities to coax any tentative writer. A side bonus: you might learn a little grammar with all those nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs floating around. I wish I had this book when I worked with struggling writers.
Packed with rollicking rhymes and oodles of onomatopoeia, BRAINSTORM is sure to inspire even the most hesitant writers! The words and ideas incorporated in Kate Kronreif’s illustrations, combined with Rebecca Gardyn Levinton’s lively text, make this a fun read-aloud! Teachers will find BRAINSTORM the perfect prelude for any writing lesson and the glossary and writing prompts at the end of the book make it a valuable resource!
Brainstorm! is a brilliant ode to the earliest stages of the writing process. Creators of all ages will relate to (and adore!) this lively story. Levington’s animated words are a perfect match for Kronreif’s’s vivid illustrations and together they inspire children to write their own masterpiece.
