Makayla Randolph decided years ago that happily ever after doesn’t exist … when hers came tumbling down. She resigned herself to focusing on her career, serving the members of the family business. But all that changes when her ex-boyfriend gets engaged. Makayla quickly realizes she’s wasted too much time stuck in the past and decides to push forward and give love another try. Unfortunately for Makayla, a job promotion reveals that the past isn’t finished with her yet.
Travis Holmes is a dedicated manager with a beautiful fiancée and a carefully cultivated five-year plan. But as wedding plans heat up, Travis’s once toasty feet begin to grow cold. On top of that, when his hard work lands him an unexpected promotion, it’s an offer he almost can’t refuse. There’s just one hitch—working with his ex-girlfriend.
Travis and Makayla’s worlds once again collide, and the ex-lovers immediately bump heads. For Makayla, the man she’d been pretending doesn’t exist is now sitting next to her in their tiny office, sipping a cold brew and flashing his Colgate smile. Travis is looking for common ground and just wants to get through the day without tripping down memory lane. It quickly becomes clear that to be successful in their new roles, they will need to stop pointing fingers and start trusting one another. This is easier said than done when each day they are confronted with what could have been.
I genuinely believe that I am one of the biggest lovers of second chance romances. I love the idea of people who didn’t work out in the beginning but are working towards a greater relationship in the present. However I genuinely don’t believe that cheating is some thing that you can work out. Not only cheating but cheating and having a child while you were in a six-year relationship. That is not some thing that can just be moved past. I think that some thing that I genuinely hate is that with a lot of these books, where forgiveness is the main theme, authors tend to put a lot of the forgiveness on the person that was the victim. Like Makayla sister said “you broke up with him remember that“ and that’s such an unfair thing to say because she wouldn’t have broken up with him if he didn’t cheat. I hated that her being unforgiving villainized her. Especially with the audacity of Travis to say that he hates her. I think it might just be my morals and standards but I genuinely don’t enjoy the romanticizing of a person ending up with someone who didn’t choose them when they were in a relationship. With a person ending up with someone who is willing to cheat in the current relationship that he is in with them. To me that doesn’t show growth. Lastly I hated that there wasn’t a scene where they spoke about everything that happened. I hated that we didn’t get to experience a proper apology towards Makayla. It was just constant “I messed up”. Never once did this man say I am sorry. I just don’t think that this is my type of book. However I did enjoy the recent book that just came out by the author . But when it comes to second chance romances at least make it so that it is actually viable for that other person to be given a second chance.
EDIT: something that I’ve just realized is that within this book and a lot of other books authors tend to nurture men while expecting women to conform. It’s like they make men these people that I have no clue on how to navigate their lives. The excuse for this man cheating was because he didn’t think that he was good enough for her. And also this author had the woman that was cheated on fight so hard to get this man back. Depicted her as someone who couldn’t move on for five years because she was so sad and miserable without this man. I just hate the little internalize misogyny. I hate how authors are so lenient on what men do. Just wanted to say that.
***SPOILERS*** Almost!! Honestly, I didn’t like it. Travis consistently proved that he’s not a good person. He betrayed Mikayla, which was the beginning of the end for their relationship. Then, instead of growing from that, he turned around and betrayed his fiancée...with Mikayla...multiple times. It felt messy and toxic, and the fact that they still ended up together made it really hard for me to root for them. Also, keep in mind they both work in ministry...where's the growth, where's the accountability!?!

I am a second chance romance ride or die. I love books based around this trope so much and I really wanted to like it more than I did.
The book starts off so good but as I continued reading the portrayal of Makayla really didn’t sit right with me. It was almost like she was being made into a villain for not forgiving travis for whatever it was that he did because we don’t find out until 200 pages in. Almost every conversation she had with her sister, Porsha went out of way to say something negative to say about Makayla. It’s like Porsha and everyone else blame Makayla for Travis’ wrongs.
Travis almost NEVER had anything nice to say about Makayla unless it was about her looks or her body. He constant brought up reasons why she was the demise of their relationship like her wanting nice things but completely leaving out he cheated on her and had a baby. Then at one point had the nerve to say he hated her.
Travis was not a good person. He cheated on Makayla and as unlikable as Regina was, she didn’t deserve to be dragged along until Travis figured out what he wanted.
While I didn’t necessarily enjoy this book as much as I wanted to, I do plan to read the authors other books.

I had no idea I needed a church romance so much - this was a delight to read, the drama had me unable to put this book down. I finished it within a day.
I have to say the cheating trope is not one I like but I suffered through that because I loved Makayla and Travis so much. I have to say again I am not a fan of the cheating trope especially two times over cheating. I had a hard time reconciling that part of the story however I did believe that Travis and Makayla should be together.
I did appreciate the realness of Travis, he wasn't completely blameless in his actions and he wasn't perfect in this situation at all.
I felt like the situation was super realistic. I loved that this was a church romance that is not portrayed in this way often. I just loved it despite not being a trope I love
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
First, I am so lucky to have received an eArc for the anticipated Working Through It😭 I can’t wait to see what is next!
Working Through It by Kasha Thompson is a contemporary romance about ex-lovers who are now enemies. When they are both promoted but have to work together, old wounds reopen and so are the feelings that they both thought were long gone. Can these two work through the loss, regret, and denial?
Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 🌶/5
I LOVED Makayla and Travis! The story between the two really reminded me so much of my own experience. I finished reading this book within a few hours because I was so intrigued☺️
As an Oakland native, I think me liking Travis is biased lol. Travis is engaged to marry his fiancé, Regina, but when he begins working side by side with Makayla, he begins to get cold feet. Don’t get me wrong, he pissed me off A LOT, but in the end he’s not so bad.
Makayla is all about focusing on her career path and providing service to those at her family church. I applaud Makayla for allowing herself to put herself out there in the dating world AFTER she felt that she was ready. *Kind of off topic but* I hate hearing people say that women are strong for enduring hurt and pain and picking themselves up after the storm passes.
Although I felt bad for Regina I was so happy that Travis and Makayla found their way back to each other. With their history and the way that they acted towards one another, it was bound to happen. I rated it 4 stars only because I felt there was something missing that could have made the book really pop, but I still enjoyed the hell out of it!♥️ Working through it means so much more than getting over the differences that the two shared for sake of their jobs.
For a church romance this was decent. I enjoyed the story and there was even some spicy scenes that gets the heart racing and makes the cheeks blush.
I'm not usually one for second chance romances. I find that one person is usually a bitter grudge holder or there is a pitiful victim. There is a bitter grudge holder they acknowledged that. Lol! I found myself blindsided by a couple events. I literally said, "oh ok, so that happened" and "umm, where did you come from you?" It's like drama just to have drama.
Nevertheless, I enjoyed the ending and wouldn't mind hearing more from these characters.
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC for the highly anticipated Working Through it.
I knew from the moment I saw the cover I had to read it.👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

My Review - I really enjoyed this book. Kasha had me going through all the motions when it came to Travis. I think with all black romances they just get me in feels and they all turn out to be comfort reads for me ❤️❤️.
That being said, Travis pissed me off throughout 50% of this book 😂but Kasha made me want to forgive him 🤣🤣(I still don't want to😒😫) but I think I did nearing the end as he he finally accepted the wrongs he did.
I loved Makayla🥰 mostly for her strength. She stood strong throughout majority of the book which I admired.
I even felt a bit bad for Regina becuase even though she acted like a lil bi*ch in the beginning she didn't deserved to treated the way she did and I liked the fact that she was able to express her piece at the end as well.
Oh my goodness. I thought had more pages of M-Kay & Travis… why did it end like this?? I wanted them to at least get married at the end BUT the fact that they rekindled their love and found their way back to each other— is a win for me!

Working Through It is a second chance romance featuring Makayla and her ex Travis who have not spoken in years. They are tasked to work together, essentially leading and improving a church ministry. I enjoyed the fact that this was a church romance. However, I never rooted against a couple to not to be together in a second chance romance as much as I rooted against this couple. I did not want them together at all.
Makayla was a very unlikeable character from the beginning. However, at 66% through the book a huge bomb is dropped (and i know this number specifically because I immediately called my sister to yell about these characters!). In that moment, I understand Makayla and I sympathized with her. I hated how everyone (her sister especially) guilt tripped her for leaving Travis. SHE WAS MORE THAN JUSTIFIED and should've never went back. Travis is portrayed as the perfect, good boy the entire book cheated on Makayla and had a baby on her. My mouth was floored. A truly unforgivable act. And even though Regina (his fiancee) was annoying, insecure, and extra AF she didn't deserved to be cheated on. Again Travis cheating again!
I really didn't want them back together. While, I appreciated that they worked through their old hurt. and their unresolved feelings needed closure. I don't believe reconciliation wasn't necessary.
Travis and Makayla did have amazing chemistry. I will say this book poses the question about forgiveness and sacrifice. How much forgiveness and acceptance of ones mistakes will you allow for your one true love...

I had some misgivings when I started the book because I really didn’t want to read about sexual hijinks amongst the church staff. And the blurbs describing the book never mention that the workplace is a church administration building. Honestly I would have skipped this one. Several times I almost DNF’d it.
Why did I finish it? I got caught up in Mikeala and Travis’ story. The unfinished love story and the yearning for the one true love. I was still on the fence until I learned what happened when Travis cheated. Then Travis’ mother died and he broke his engagement to Regina, his current fiancée. I totally got how Regina felt having been in that same position myself.
I loved that Travis stepped up for Daisy. Then I realized the book was about a man and a woman who had loved each other and lost it. Then got the chance to find each other again. Though I still wish it had taken place somewhere other than a church. I’m kinda old fashioned and believe in living pure before God.
So why did I give it four stars! It tugged on my heart. I had empathy for Regina. And Mikeala and Travis really did love each other and belonged together.
I borrowed this from Kindle Unlimited.

TW/ CW: infidelity, death of a parent
Tropes: black romance, second chance romance, enemies to lovers, forced proximity
Working Through It is a second chance romance where we follow Travis and Makayla. After a six year relationship Travis and Makayla have broken up and it is far from pretty. With neither one being able to tolerate the other, both are offered promotions at their job to work together. With Travis being newly engaged and possibly getting cold feet, and Makayla getting back into the dating scene to find her perfect guy, working together is the last thing either of them wants to do. But what happens when a little forced proximity and a tiny office brings old feelings back to the former lovers.
Working Through It was actually a cute read. I enjoyed reading how even though Makayla and Travis are polar opposites, their love for each other and dynamic personalities balance each other out in the best way. The side characters were also a breath of fresh and comedy that contributed to the story well. My only take is that some parts of the story line seem to be a bit rush and thrown together. They came out of nowhere and weren't explained enough for my liking. But all in all I really did enjoy this book and following the journey of Travis and Makayla.
For the characters, I love that Kasha showed the dynamic of a lot of men thinking that they're the "good guy" and ultimately coming to terms and realizing the wrongs they may have done in significant relationships to the women they loved. Travis' journey to truly come to terms and atone his faults in his relationship was a great journey to see. Makayla had me a little heated in the beginning but after we get to the climax and we see her journey of trying to love again after the break-up with Travis, Makayla became such an amazing and complex woman in eyes. She was determined to not let her past relationships define how she viewed love and continued to stay true to herself and her standards despite everyone around her telling her to soften herself and compromise for a man. Also I love that these characters were graduates of an HBCU. As an HBCU grad myself, it was great to black love being represented through the very institutions made for black people to strive.
Kasha Thompson this was all in all a GREAT story and I can't wait to read more from you!!!!
Nowwww typically, I love a good second chance romance, especially when its right person wrong time. But this one right here had so much shit I couldn't look past. Let's start with Travis cheating on his girlfriend of SIX YEARS. Now while cheating is already trash within itself, let's talk about the fact that a child came from this. That right their is completely unforgivable. Makayla should have been a little meaner to Travis because WTF !? I hated how Porsha kept trying to make it seem like Makayla wasn't willing to listen to Travis at the time, but their wasn't shit to listen to. & Porsha gave GOD AWFUL advice. Its clear she's married to a white man 😑 & Let's not forget how he was doing Regina after him & Makayla had to start working together. He literally almost had sex with her twice while being engaged & not one ever told his fiancé. I believed everything Makayla said when she said he put on a good guy act. & Please believe little Ms. Makayla is not off the hook. Makayla was childish, petty, spoiled & bratty. She needed some counseling to work on her internal issues of feeling like she had to be less self sufficient to get a man or keep him. She made it seem like she needed to dim her light in order to let a man in her love life shine. & Let's not forget how she thought she could manipulate Travis out of not taking the position. Honestly after everything that transpired their first time around the sun, these two needed a break from seeing each other everyday.
I do love how Makayla was there for Travis when his mom died. & I thought it was so beautiful how she started to come around to his daughter. Especially considering the baby came to church every summer. I know that couldn't be easy. Ultimately tho, I would have been happy to NOT see these two get back together & maybe just come to an amicable place as friends. I know this was some of Ms. Kasha's older work, but it doesn't hit the same. Travis & Makayla was deff a hit & miss for me. But as usual, the writing was amazing !

Firstly I'd just love to thank NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to be an ARC reader for this novel, now let's get to the actual reviewing:
3.5/5 stars
Firstly YES to black romance. Secondly YES to a strong (albeit stubborn and rude sometimes) female lead.
In Working Through It, we follow Travis and Makayla in their second chance romance. Travis and Makayla have broken up after a six-year romance, and they don't even pretend to like each other. It was an instant 'no' when both were offered advancements at their jobs to work together, until it wasn't. We see how Travis and Makayla deal with lingering sentiments and situations that aren't 'water under the bridge' now that Travis is set to get married and Makayla has finally decided to get back into the dating scene.
Now onto the characters, I love how they portrayed Makayla as this strong female even though sometimes she really was being difficult, nonetheless I respected that she admitted that sometimes she wanted someone to be strong FOR her, and genuinely I think that's a narrative that so many females (black females especially) are faced with.
Travis, man can he dish it. He doesn't let Makayla intimidate nor scare him off, and he makes sure to always have a comeback for her. I respect his growth from thinking he was the 'good guy' to realizing that he's human and he made mistakes. Mistakes that hurt others and that will have consequences. That's a tough pill to swallow, especially when one is heavily involved in the church.
The book was fast paced and loveable for the most part but some areas felt a bit rushed, but all in all it was a lovely read!
P.S: Can we just talk about how Pastor Randolph described Travis and Makayla as the spear and the shield. I think I audibly gasped. "You two balance each other" *screams* so cute.
I know that the books on NetGalley go through some edits so what I read here isn’t necessarily what’s being sold on the shelves, but it’s hard to believe they cut anything out of this book! I felt like all the details were needed; everything just flowed and I loved it.
My favorite part was finding out Travis had a daughter. Being able to understand the animosity that Makayla had towards him allowed me to better understand her feelings about their relationship. Initially, I was thinking she held cheating to a very high standard but cheating is a different story when a baby is produced.
Starting at chapter 28 I think I cried for a good 10 mins lol. It was such a tragic accident and it reminded me of my own grandmother’s passing. When a book can make you feel the emotion as you read it….5 star in my book. I also felt that Travis’s mother’s death couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. Regina wasn’t speaking with him and he was going back and forth with wedding details, to me allowed him the space he needed to end the “relationship”. I didn’t really care for Rufus (lol) for Makayla. He was truly a rebound and was able to stick around longer than the others because of his persistence.
Although I did not care for Regina either, I can understand how she felt when she decided to end her relationship with Travis. Those are hard words and conversations to have with someone you are supposed to marry. If I ever come across a man that gives me a hard time about setting details about OUR wedding…I’m running the other way. Period.
The icing on the cake was when Travis wooed Makayla. The flowers and that whole scene had me smiling from ear to ear. I’m glad they were able to work through things and find their way back to each other. Beautiful story.
I love second chances. However, this is my first second chance involving cheating in a contemporary romance format. Cheating is a sensitive and heavy baggage in a relationship. I’ve seen them in my circle, it’s never been dealt with and usually hush hush. Common theme is men are unrepentant and prey on the women’s helplessness in leaving.
SO I was interested how it would be tackled here. I think the author really tried and writes really well and I loved Makayla’s character but I thought the onus of forgiveness was put on her wrongfully. I see it’d been almost five years since the cheating incident, which allowed for time to be the band-aid. We don’t see the work or the grovel. People who cheat will cheat, but I wanted to know why he did it if she was the love of his life. He hid it and was only caught bc the one night stand got pregnant. I don’t think that’s something to get over - be confronted with the cheating and the living proof of it?
Then Travis almost sort of was cheating again on Regina by not being forthcoming to her about where’s his head, especially after Makayla and him kissed. He hid it again, and this was okay because his one true love was Makayla? Where was the growth?
Everyone around Makayla wanted her to go get her man when her man was the one that stepped out? Maybe If I’d seen the grovel, it would’ve been more palatable. I didn’t like that everyone wanted Makayla to take him back without acknowledging the fuckery Travis did.
As said by Shawn Coyne (Author of The Story Grid) "A well-told Story is a gift to the reader/listener/viewer because it teaches them how to confront their own discomforts.”
2.5 ⭐️ // At the beginning, the book was very comforting for me. I grew up in smaller churches, so the start felt like home.
However, I have some deal breakers when it comes to books, and any form of cheating is a no-go for me. Also, the book brought up my negative feelings towards mega churches, mainly around wealth and congregation numbers. Additionally, the two main females, Makayla and Regina, were unlikable in my opinion, but I did like Travis, Daisy, and Porsha.
If you can get passed the church cattiness and the cheating, the story was good! I do think the author is a good writer, and I adore the book cover. But unfortunately, the book was not for me.
Read this book if … 💼You like the workplace romance trope 🗡You like the enemies to lovers trope ⛪️You relate to pastors’ kids 💕You enjoy the second chance romance trope 🗝You believe trust is key to a relationship
TW: infidelity, parental death
Thank you, NetGalley and Webster Avenue Publishing, for providing me an ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This is my first time reading this author and as such I read the reviews to get a feel of the author's style. While I enjoyed the book, I must say I agree with the other reviews on a few points.
I'm not overly religious but, I feel that maybe the work place could have been something else, but I get today's church is different from my grandmothers church but still.
Makayla being made to be a villain when she did exactly the right thing when she was betrayed. I mean there was a constant reminder and everyone was making it seem oh that's nothing, he's a good sexy man.
If he were a good man he wouldn't have done what he did to neither woman. Yes as much as I disliked Regina, she deserved better but at the same time, sis was childish.
I get why Travis sabotaged the relationship, the signs were there, but I feel that there should have been more conversations. Again an overall good read and I will read the author again.
I was disappointed by this one, especially because I LOVED the last book I read by this author. I actually purchased this one first, and I'm glad I got to it second because I don't know that I would have read another book by this author if I read this one first.
There was nothing romantic about this romance. It is a second-chance romance that is full of cheating and lying. The main character's family members seem to blame her or feel that she needs to move on past significant betrayals of her ex. They also blatantly encourage her to ruin someone else's engagement to get what she wants. The love interest is a serial cheater and liar throughout the book (I mean up until basically the end) and it is played off as it's romantic and he's conflicted, but even though EVERYONE knows what he has done to her ... they seem to hold him up as a wonderful person that she should forgive.
I'm giving it two stars instead of one, because I do really like the author's writing style and some pieces of this story I thought were great, but it didn't outweigh all the negative. I love a good second-chance romance, but this is not it.
The author should have been upfront about the premise of the book being church based in the summary. I'm not a fan of that theme, and I am religious.
Who would get back with a man that had a baby on them? To add insult to injury, he asked her why she kissed him, and when she threw the question back at him, he said, "because in that moment it felt right." That sounds like the M.O. of a cheater and probably why he cheated on her in the first place because in that moment, it felt right. He didn't bring up when he initiated the kiss and more at his apartment. I was glad that his fiancé called him out and let him know he's not the good guy he tries to play. In his own narrative, he said it was his fault they separated, but her fault they stayed separated. A man would never stay with a woman, let alone get back with her years later if she had a baby on him. You cant make cheating okay, no matter how you spend it.
The second book by this author in two days, and I will admit, I enjoyed this story as well. Second chance love stories always make me happy. The only thing that caused me to pause was the cheating parts. I already senses the cheating that broke the relationship between Travis and Makayla had severe consequences. The fact that he cheated on her and then did it again made me see him differently. But, I understood somewhat, because Regina was only the placeholder for his true love. I know this is not a real story, but it represents so many relationships today. And I am happy Travis and Makayla found love again; I wish it wasn't at the expense of others. The preacher knew what he was doing when he set his actions in motion to have another expected/hopeful reaction. A good read. 4 Stars....
I’m happy with ending although I thought Regina could have used a bit of self reflection. The storyline was pretty good but I did struggle with the fact that for them to be church leaders they didn’t have any real issue with their language and behavior as it relates to Christianity and neither did the other pastor in the story. I had a hard time understanding why they couldn’t have worked anywhere else. The main characters seemed like the only viewed the ministry as a job and not a discipleship opportunity. It seemed like having them work in ministry was a deliberate attempt to desensitize. I feel like a part of Satan’s plan is normalizing behavior that goes against the Bible and I felt this book really helped in that area. I’m curious to see if this is a running theme in her work.
I really wanted to like this book a lot more. While I do love a good second chance romance I am not a fan of cheating. Not only that, but it takes over half the book to find out why Makayla is not ready to forgive Travis. And with good reason, He did her so dirty, and spent the first half of the book vilifying her only to find out he’s a whole ass cheater who got a girl pregnant and wasn’t even going to tell her if the baby wasn’t his. The whole child thing was just thrown into the book with no warning. You get no hints or nothing that he has a child until he sees her. Everyone around them acted like Travis didn’t do anything major and Makayla was just overreacting. Makayla truly gave in too easy.

This is a solid 3.5, not terrible but also not amazing. It is not poorly written at all, but you can definitely tell it’s an earlier work because the tone is noticeably different than her recent novels.
Second chance romance is my holy grail so I did enjoy the story it just felt slow at times. It doesn’t helot that it’s written in third person so we don’t get those inner thoughts I think could’ve really made the story pop. Travis and Makayla did have the it’s always been you vibes, they did make you root for them, just needed a little something more. Not a disappointing read and I highly recommend KT books so if you happen to start with this one and are not a fan you should definitely pick up Sight Unseen or Defensive Stance!
I give this story a 3.5⭐️ because the writing was good but I didn’t love the storyline.
This is a 2nd chance romance. I love a story that has characters with complexities but the MMC was just plain old problematic. I didn’t like how everyone (including him) gaslit the FMC for breaking up with him when there was a huge break in trust. They pretty much blamed her for not giving him another chance. Also, everyone treated her as if she was so difficult just because she is a woman who is driven. Sure she had issues but everyone in that book kind of did; but, no one seemed to show her understanding, not even her family.
I like Kasha’s book but this had me pissed pretty much from beginning to end lol!
This is the fourth book I’ve read by this author. I really enjoy her writing. However I didn’t care for how everyone made it seem as if Makayla was the problem in this story. Travis was angry with her but he was the real cause of their breakup. Porshsa, her sister, kept telling her that she didn’t know how to make a man feel needed. Instead of caring about her healing, everybody kept pushing her to get back with him. I got tired of everyone saying what a good guy he was when he definitely was not. Even with his dealings with Regina, he didn’t come across as a good guy. I am happy that he finally realized and acknowledged he was the issue. But I just couldn’t find a reason to root for a HEA.
First, I DNF'd this book. More than 70% into the book we discover that not only did this man cheat, he has a WHOLE CHILD as a result!! Meanwhile everyone in the book is making it seem like it's Makayla's fault for pushing him away and she didn't give him a chance to explain and looking at HER like they don't understand why she left and holds hostility towards him? Like he's such a good guy and didn't mean it and should've just accepted it? MEANWHILE THIS MAN IS CURRENTLY ENGAGED AND STILL PIN9NG AFTER HER KNOWING AND ADMITING HE'S WITH HIS FIANCE BECAUSE SHE'S THE SAFE CHOICE!! Now you think I'm gonna keep reading to watch her end up back in a relationship with him? THEY WORK IN A CHURCH!!! GTFOH

I was all for Makayla and Travis working through it until I found out what he did…sheesh! Looking at it from the present to the past, it was clear that they still had love for each other and have t found one person to replace the love they had. Daisy was just a big box of sunshine ☀️ and brightened up the pages with her personality. Not sure if that betrayal could ever be overcome, so I now fully understand how Makayla felt all of these years and wonder if she could fully trust Travis now. This one truly has me torn between the heart and the hurt! There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to their plight.
