Tai knyga, kurie patenka į tų keistųjų knygų kolekciją. Kur iš pirmo žvilgsnio viskas tėra paprasta meilės istorija, galbūt kažkiek intriguojantis meilės trikampis. Gluminantys veikėjų poelgiai ir sprendimai. Ir gal net pabaigus knygą viskas tvarkingai sukrenta į vietas… tačiau neatperka to, kaip sunku buvo skaityti kone pusę knygos. Net nesu tikra, ar tokios didelės ir plačios įžangos ten reikėjo, ar nebūtume supratę, kokia didelė ir neaprėpiama ta Itano meilė Amberei? O gal autorės mintis ir buvo tokia, kad Itanas spėtų iš proto išvesti skaitytoją?

Knyga mums pasakoja apie Amberę ir ją beprotiškai įsimylėjusį meno studentą Itaną. Tačiau Amberė renkasi ne jį, o gerokai vyresnį ir, toks jausmas, viskuo geresnį Stiuartą ir labai greitai už jo išteka. Tačiau Itanas negali susitaikyti su tokiu moters sprendimu ir jausmų taip lengvai nepaleidžia.

Perskaičiusi daugiau nei pusę knygos jau buvau nusiteikusi ją šveisti į sieną. Pagrindinis veikėjas tiesiog… užkniso. Jis jautė ir matė net tai, ko aš neužčiuopiau. O gal esu per maža romantikė. Bet tai nekeičia fakto, kad jei reikėtų išrinkti patį nesimpatiškiausią veikėją, kurį sutikau šiemet, tai be abejonės būtų Itanas. Bet ir lygiai taip pat suprantu, kad sukurti veikėją, kuris iššauktų tokias stiprias emocijas – yra ką veikti.

„Laikas žaidžia su tavimi. Tai, kas vienu metu atrodė teisinga, vėliau nebūtinai taip atrodys, bet kai apgailestausi dėl praeities, išlįsk iš dabarties odos ir grįžk į ankstesnę save.“

Romane nemažai pasakojama ir apie Itano ekspediciją į Antarktidą. Nesupratau. Nieko nesupratau, nei kam to reikėjo, nei kas su kuo galiausiai turėtų susisieti.

Ir noriu papasakoti apie gana įdomų sutapimą. Dažnu atveju nuotraukas knygoms pasidarau iš anksto, užtaikius, kai nebūna cepelininio dangaus. Ši nuotrauka – ne išimtis. Atsiverčiau „Meno istoriją“, radau neryškų paveikslą, pamaniau – tiks puikiai. Tik vėliau, knygoje aptikusi su Ieva ir Adomu susijusią sceną, supratau, kad ir nuotraukoje vaizduojami būtent jie.

Keista, daug dviprasmiškų minčių sukėlusi knyga. Buvau nusiteikusi vertinti gana prastai, tačiau „kančios“ buvo atpirktos, pabaiga pasirodė graži. Tiesiog graži. Pabaigoje ir Itanas tarsi subrendo ir pasakė ir padarė dalykus, dėl kurio jo personažas tapo nebe toks atgrasus. Vis tik tai nekeičia fakto, ka knyga keista. Ir tikrai su malonumu ją skaitys tie, kas tokius kūrinius mėgsta. Kur klausimų lieka daugiau, nei gauname atsakymų.

I had high hopes for this NZ novel, especially since it is being made into a film, but it just didn't grab me. Set in Auckland during the 1980s, with the tragic undertone of unrequited love. It was nice to see historic events and typically NZ touches throughout, but I thought that some of these didn't add to the plot or seem to fit in that well and felt a bit forced. I didn't particularly like either of the main characters and wasn't that vested in their relationship. This one wasn't really for me.

The main character Ethan is annoying, his loyalty to Amber wavers a lot and the reveal near the end is improbable. It isnt typical of a 1980's outlook.
However I understand that the author wanted to show that people are not perfect and there are many layers to a character.
Once I had read the first third with some reluctance I decided to carry on and the pace improved and some surprises created more interest.
I did feel some of the inserts covering 1980s New Zealand were plopped in but they did add some insights to the events such as the protests over the Springbok tours.
I wouldn't particularly recommend this for teens [thinking of the changes to the history curriculum] but some may enjoy it.

Her first novel in nine years, Christine Leunens' In Amber's Wake sees the author dabbling into a tumultuous time in New Zealand history, during the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior, the controversial Springbok tour in the time of apartheid, and nuclear testing in the Pacific.

It was a time of clashing moralities, anger at the state of the world at large, and a furious rebellion between the emerging generation and the post-WWII generations. It was a time when notions right and wrong came into aggressive conflict, motivations came into question, and the effects of the choices made created ripples we still feel today. And, in appropriate fashion, Leunens covers it all in this tragic, brave story about a crazy little thing called love.

The book follows the character Ethan, a film student, and his unrequited love for his long time friend Amber, an environmental activist. However, when Amber chooses to marry a widower two decades her senior named Stuart Reeds, the stage is set for a conflict between all three, creating ripples that none of them could have predicted.

I feel like this is a criminally simplistic way of summarising this fascinating story, one which sees Leunens' delve into the complicated ways humans do whatever it takes to achieve happiness. The story takes a little while to get going as we are introduced to Ethan as a narrator and the players in this story. Occasionally quite unlikable and pining in the beginning, Ethan however develops into a mature and complex narrator, desperately trying to right his mistakes of the past. Leunens isn't sugar-coating characters here: these are people with many flaws.

The titular character is also the light of the whole story. Amber is a beautifully realised and heart-breaking character, an epitome of the conflicted times in New Zealand, yet also ultimately timeless.

Unlike the splashings of dark humour we've often seen in her previous books, Leunens plays it straight, and this feels like an intensely more personal story. She still isn't one to shy away from intense subject matter, and in it's final pages the story evolves into an intense family drama, which a gut-punch of a twist I didn't see coming.

In Amber's Wake is not an easy read, but it is an intensely rewarding one for those who love multi-layered characters. To hear it is being adapted for film seems eerily appropriate: this is a story with a lot to say, and no doubt will captivate many readers who will come across it.

Meeldis. Tubli tükk toredat romaani. Armastust ja muud sellesarnast. Pelgasin, et kisub õige läägeks ehk, aga eriti seda ei juhtunud. No ühes kohas läks jah veidi, aga ma ei saa reeta täpsemalt :) Lisaks, ütleme nii, et see ei olnud seda tüüpi lugude tavapärane roosamanna alatoon.

Tagantjärele on mul veidi kahju, et raamatuesitlusele ei jõudnud. Alguses (pean silmas ilmudes) tekitas see raamat minus parajalt segadust. Tundus, et rõhuasetus on tugevalt Greenpeace´i ja tuumavastase võitluse peal. Ja ega see, et autor on endine modell, mulle ka erilist lootust ei sisendanud. Ühes veebipoes lipsas raamat korraks reisikirjanduse alla, kuigi liikus sealt ruttu ikka ilukirjanduse hulka. Poes lehitsedes sattusin üldse Antarktika peale (muidu peamine tegevuskoht ikka Auckland). Tegelikkuses oli õrn Antarktika-liin küll olemas, kuigi kui aus olla, seda poleks tarvis olnud. Ju oli keegi autorile öelnud, et heal romaanil p e a b olema paralleelselt kaks erinevat lugu jooksmas, soovitavalt erineval ajaskaalal. Ega siin oli neid nüansse veelgi, kus tundus, et autor järgis õpikulikke juhtnööre, aga ei, see ei häirinud eriti. Veider, näib et mul on palju kritiseerida, aga siiski oli selles tekstis see miski olemas, mis hoidis mind küljes kinni ja pani vurinal ühe soojaga lõpuni lugema :)

Raamatu tagakaas lubab traagilist lugu kustumatust armastusest. Seda see on, kuigi suures osas tulenes traagilisus asjaosaliste endi valikutest, aga nii see elu juba kord on. Ethan ja Amber kohtuvad, armuvad, aga ometi abiellub Amber endast 40 (!) aastat vanema Stuartiga. Ethan matab end filmitöösse, ometi ei katke side nende kahe vahel ning lõpuks juhtub vältimatu. Miks asjad ei lähe nagu võiks - õnneliku lõpuni - sellest raamat räägibki loole tagasivaatava Ethani silmade läbi.
Raamat jättis kahetised tunded, ega ma Amberist lõpuni aru saanudki ning mitmed kohad ja süžeeliinid olid pehmelt öeldes vildakalt ja pealiskaudselt kokku traageldatud. Aga muidu hea lugu.

What a story! A love story but the way it's written, the twists and character depictions are so well crafted, I got drawn into the spiral of the plot and hell, didn't see the end coming. Took me a while to let go off the books once finished. Don't want to comment more, as I'd need to spoil the many surprises this beautiful novel contains.

And New Zealander Kristin Lenens is not completely a stranger to you, if you know the Oscar-winning "Jojo Rabbit" Taika Waititi, based on her novel "The Bird in the Cage." However, let's return to "Following Amber." At the end of the 70s, a film school student Ethan meets a young Amber, the daughter of a horse breeder and a horsewoman, she is at this party to experience the drama of killing a horse in public - during training, the stallion broke his leg and the girl had to shoot him to stop the torment. There was a fracture that could not be treated.

And from that day, or rather the night, when they wandered along the beach and talked about everything in the world, their telephone romance began. The phone number, because he studied in the city, and she lived on the farm all the time. When I called my father a horse breeder, you could imagine some millionaire, but in fact Amber's father runs a farm where horses are bred, raised, trained for show jumping. Such a family business, where they all plow from dawn to dawn. The next face-to-face meeting will happen only in six months and will deprive Ethan of hopes, because at the celebration at Amber's house, where he will be invited, she will clearly be with another, and this man - much older even than his beloved's parents, will turn out to be not only a real millionaire, but also the most intelligent, noble, charismatic of the older generation, which They've both met before. The book has just been published, and, unlike the post-review, when everything has already been read and you can talk freely about the plot, the format of the pre-review involves hiding the plot. Therefore, there will be no details, I will only say that this is a story that you absolutely believe, all the characters in it behave exactly as real people would behave - your friends or yourself; it's really interesting all the time, and in the finale I even gasped so loudly that I made the saleswoman look suspiciously the store where she tried on summer sundresses - did she break something, did this customer tear it? But in fact, it only reflected the level of emotional involvement, the highest. You have already understood that I listened to an audiobook, a novel in this format is available on Bookmate and Litress, and Alexey Komissarov reads perfectly.

Tym razem za sprawą powieści Christine Laurens przenosimy się do klimatycznej Nowej Zelandii z jej niesamowicie kojącymi krajobrazami.
Główny bohater książki, Ethan jest studentem filmoznawstwa i od kilku lat skrycie kocha swą najlepszą przyjaciółkę, Amber.
Ta jednak mimo, iż czuje głębszą więź z chłopakiem, wręcz rozumiejąc go bez słów nie odwzajemnia jego miłości, a co więcej postanawia wyjść za mąż za starszego od siebie o dwadzieścia lat inwestora i biznesmena -Stuarta.
Na wieść o planowanej uroczystości młody mężczyzna podejmuje decyzję, która całkowicie odmieni jego życie.
Pragnie bowiem zawalczyć o uczucie i serce ukochanej, nawet jeśli owe starania miałyby zakończyć się porażką.
Czy przyjaźń zmieni się w coś więcej a bohaterowie odnajdą szczęście i spełnienie?
Pierwsze słowo jakie na zawsze będzie mi się kojarzyło ze "Śladami" to nieoczywista.
Historia stworzona przez autorkę ma swój rytm i orowadzona jest z kilku perspektyw czasowych , co pozwala śledzić rozwój relacji pomiędzy poszczególnymi osobami, a także zrozumieć ich wybory i motywacje a także przenieść się do początków znajomości Amber i jej przyjaciela.
Lektura mimo nieśpiesznego tempa obfituje w mnóstwo często bardzo skrajnych emocji , a postaci są bardzo wyraziste.
Autorka w swej fabule porusza również bardzo istotne kwestie takie jak różnice pokoleniowe, uprzedzenia i brak akceptacji dla niektórych wyborów życiowych, czego dowodzi sytuacja brata głównej bohaterki i jego orientacji seksualnej.
Część opisów może bym skróciła, lecz całość wywarła na mnie duże wrażenie i bardzo mi się podobała zaś otwarte zakończenie pozostawiło niedosyt. 🤍💙

"Śladami Amber" to książka, która oprócz historii miłosnej, ma nam do zaoferowania dużo więcej. Relacje wsuwają się tu na pierwszy plan. I emocje, które są nam dawkowane w odpowiedniej i adekwatnej do sytuacji porcji. Autorka subtelnie prowadzi narrację, jednocześnie wywołując u czytelnika pewne napięcie związane z fabuła. Wprowadza również elementy zaskoczenia - przez co potęguje naszą ciekawość. Zakończenie natomiast jest tu wisienką na torcie - zupełnie nie dało się go przewidzieć, za co ogromne brawa. Nasi bohaterowie zostali dopracowni w najmniejszym calu. Widać tu dużą pracę autorki, która oprócz dosyć nietuzinkowej fabuły, poznaje nas z takimi właśnie bohaterami "z krwi i kości" - ze swoimi bagażami życiowych doświadczeń. Podobało mi się zwłaszcza to, że mimo swoich doświadczeń, bohaterowie nie poddali się, walczyli o siebie, o swoją przyszłość, szczęście. I stąd może płynąć nauka dla nas wszystkich. Nauka i nadzieja dla nas - abyśmy się nie poddawali pomimo przeciwności losu, bo nikt nigdy nie wie, kiedy jego los się odmieni. A może się to stać w ułamku sekundy. Piękna, mądra, życiowa, naładowana emocjami po sam sufit - taka własnej się historia Amber, Ethana, Stuarta i innych bohaterów. Każdy bohater tu przedstawiany wnosi do fabuły własną historię, problemy emocje. I ta wielopłaszczyznowa powieść pięknie łączy w sobie wszystkie wątki, które są przedstawiony w subtelny sposób, wywołując mnóstwo emocji u czytelnika. Ciekawy pomysł, świetna narracja, cudowni bohaterowie - dajcie się namówić i sięgnijcie po "Śladami Amber", a na pewno nie będziecie żałować

Uma obra com muitos segredos, um amor proibido, traições, perdas, redenção, perdão, superação e que nos faz refletir sobre assuntos importantes como relacionamentos tóxicos, a força de seguir em frente, nas lutas que enfrentamos em adversidades da vida e como lidamos com elas, além de testar nosso emocional com situações impensáveis, questões morais e éticas e uma certa obsessão.

"A verdade às vezes pode ser superestimada. A verdade é terrível demais, especialmente... Depois que um segredo é revelado."

Ethan e Amber são amigos, porém enquanto ele é apaixonado por ela, ela segue em um relacionamento com um cara mais velho e que parece sempre estar à frente de Ethan em tudo.
Sempre que parece que Ethan vai seguir em frente, de alguma forma ele acaba tendo sua vida entrelaçada à de Amber, e seu coração insiste em desobedecer a razão. Amber ao mesmo tempo que não quer nada além de amizade com Ethan e segue em seu relacionamento com Stuart, ela meio que nutre o sentimento de Ethan.

Ethan um estudante de cinema...

Stuart um britânico mais velho, charmoso e disposto a lutar por Amber...

ŚLADAMI AMBER, to zgrabnie napisana opowieść obyczajowa, której nie brak tajemnic, skrywanych uczuć, problemów rodzinnych oraz walki o szczęście... które zawsze przychodzi do człowieka "inną drogą". To dobry obyczaj, lekko napisany więc i czyta się tę pozycję naprawdę szybko i nie męczy.
Christine Leunens postawiła na miłość - pierwszą prawdziwą, która obezwładnia i nie pozwala o sobie zapomnieć. Główny bohater Ethan, który zajmuje się filmoznawstwem, pokochał Amber, dziewczynę "od koni", ze stadniny, energiczną, piękną, zwiewną istotę... lecz to nie będzie prosta miłość. Na horyzoncie jest starszy inwestor i to z nim Amber zaczyna się umawiać. Dalsze losy tego trójkąta pokazują, że życie samo pisze scenariusze i to takie, o jakich by nam się nie śniło.
Książka Leunens nie jest ckliwa i nie ma w niej wiele radości. Jest raczej refleksyjna i dramatyczna w swym wydźwięku. Myślę, że to dobrze, że autorka postawiła jednak na coś innego, niż popularny i lubiany happy end. Tutaj mamy nieoczywisty koniec... choć przyznaję, że domyśliłam się dosyć szybko głównego zwrotu w tej historii (ale to raczej nie psuje całości).
ŚLADAMI AMBER oceniam dobrze. Nie jestem wielką fanką tej opowieści, ale dla osób lubiących powieści obyczajowe, to będzie udany wybór. Poprawnie napisana, szybko się czyta, bohaterowie tacy sobie, ale do lubienia. Spokojnie można przeczytać w długi, listopadowy wieczór.

The book is set in New Zealand in the 1980’s amidst the backdrop of the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior, the Springbok rugby tour protests and the anti-nuclear movement, but it is a story of a lifelong romance and what happens when decisions and actions can have powerful consequences. Environmental activist Amber Deering enjoys a deep friendship and on again / off again romance with film student Ethan Grieg but instead marries Stuart Reeds, a charming investor and widower two decades older. As a not so subtle rivalry develops between the two men, all three characters make choices that lead to momentous and life-changing situations. Exploring themes of love, friendship, loyalty, family dysfunction, grief and illness set against a backdrop of social change and politics, this novel is written with assured prose and in a distinct and engaging voice. The timeframe takes the reader back and forth in time, each chapter unearthing more secrets.
Also, this book has the nicest page paper stock I’ve felt in ages. (It’s the small details.)

Być może z tego powodu wspomnienie to nabrało tak surrealistycznego charakteru, że zadaję sobie pytanie, czy to wszystko naprawdę się wydarzyło…

Niekiedy książka to więcej niż tylko opowieść, to podróż w głąb bohaterów i ich losy. Znana z umiejętności zagłębiania skomplikowanych relacji międzyludzkich i moralnych dylematów Christine Leunens, ponownie zabiera nas w emocjonalną wędrówkę, pełną nieoczywistych wyborów, trudnych pytań i bolesnych odkryć.

Jako że jest to moje pierwsze spotkanie z twórczością autorki, byłam zarówno pełna obaw jak i ciekawości. Zwłaszcza względem stylu pisania, który znacznie wpływa na odbiór historii. Obawy szybko jednak ustąpiły, pokazując jak autorka mistrzostwo, operuje słowem, zarówno w kwestii uczuć, bohaterów jak i opisów. Jej styl jest pełen szczegółów, a jednocześnie oszczędny w słowach, które zadają cios czytelnikowi. Fragmenty opisujące Antarktydę ukazują samotność Ethana, a retrospekcje przepełnione są ciepłem i nostalgią za minionymi czasami.

It was recommended to me as a "you won't see it coming" love story. It got me hooked through all the chapters and I totally engaged with the narrator's character Ethan. Though I didn't think of the 80's as an important period of history, Leunens manages to bring it up to a level that made me realise the struggles and challenges that existed then and how they still (sadly) have a current presence, think nuclear power and, cold war (Russia) and environmental impact. The way Amber's and Ethan's journey and the political affairs are interwoven just adds depth to the characters and gives them an extra layer of reality that had me immersed in their story.

Kartais knyga tiesiog idealiai atitinka emocinę būseną. Man tai buvo liūdna, bet savaip graži meilės istorija.

Tai pasakojimas ne apie laimingą pabaigą, o apie aplinkybes, kurios tiesiog nesiklosto taip, kaip norėtume. Istorija apie du žmones (Amberę ir Itaną), kurių meilė nuolat atsimuša į gyvenimo realybę, netinkamą laiką ir skaudžius pasirinkimus.

Ši knyga kitokia nei įprasti meilės romanai. Čia nėra saldumo ar garantuoto „ilgai ir laimingai“. Priešingai - pabaiga paliko kartėlį, nes viskas baigėsi ne taip, kaip tikėjausi ar norėjau. Tačiau būtent tas kitoniškumas, skaudžios patirtys ir herojų pasiaukojimas man paliko didžiausią įspūdį.

Maybe I’m a bit biased because contemporary NZ fiction is my favourite genre, but this was a great story. Quite a few plot twists genuinely surprised me, and once I reached the halfway point of the book it was hard to put down. At times it felt like there was a bit of a laundry list of NZ 1980s events shoehorned into the story but I didn’t really mind it. The way the ending was wrapped up in the last few pages felt a little awkward/clumsy but not a big enough deal to change my rating. I absolutely loved Leunens’ writing style and now I think I’ll have to give one of her other books a go.

Потому подробностей не будет, скажу лишь, что это история, которой абсолютно веришь, все герои в ней ведут себя совершенно так, как вели бы живые люди - ваши знакомые или вы сами; это по-настоящему интересно все время, а в финале я даже охнула так громко, что заставила с подозрением приглядеться продавщицу магазина, где примеряла летние сарафаны - уж не сломала ли чего, не порвала ли эта покупательница? Но на самом деле это лишь отразило уровень эмоциональной вовлеченности, высочайший. Вы уже поняли, что я слушала аудиокнигой, роман в этом формате есть на Букмейте и Литрессе, а читает Алексей Комиссаров прекрасно.

Классная книга для любой аудитории. Без гандикапа на "чувствительность"

Keista knyga. Pusę jos prasinervinau ir jau buvau nusiteikusi vertinti kokia 1⭐️. Bet gerai, kad esu iš tų, kur niekada nenumetu knygos, kad ir kokia ji būtų neįdomi. Gal kiek per ištempta. Pradžia galėjo būti trumpesnė tikrai. Bet visa atomazga nustebino. Nesitikėjau tokių likimo posūkių. Patiko. Labai. Džiaugiuosi perskaičiusi. Pabaiga suvirpino širdį. Maximumo neduodu už tą super sunkią įžangą🙈😁

4.2⭐️ Loved the first part, the love triangle formed by the narrator, a young film student, the heroine, Amber, a young activist with a wild spirit, and the older, rich, sophisticated man (this love story reminded me of Enigma Otiliei by G. Calinescu). I also loved the last part, but something was missing from this story to be truly memorable.

Hard to say if I liked this or not. I’m still thinking about it, so I guess I probably did. Not my normal read. Found the main characters annoying for the first 150 pages - but then it got interesting. The twist at the end I saw coming, but made it interesting none the less.

I’m not convinced. Firstly, the way the main characters angsted (is that a word?) over their actions didn’t seem plausible. Secondly, the insertion of historical events that didn’t advance the narrative was jarring. I did love the clever and original ending though.

Thought this was going to be a cookie cutter love story made into an indie film that would exhaust me. I was wrong. The twists and turns and the ending made it a gripping, sentimental read.
