As Justice Jones arrived at Highbury House to begin her third year, she was thrilled to see her old friends, Stella and Dorothy. The rest of the Barnowls (the girls in her dormitory) were all there too, and there was a new girl, Letitia. Her parents were wealthy, and she hadn’t been to school before; she also wasn’t too concerned about the rules of the boarding house. As she attached herself to Justice – to Stella and Dorothy’s dismay – Letitia vowed she and Justice would have lots of fun.

After another midnight feast with the Barnowls, the sighting of a ghost in the garden saw the girls flee back to their dormitory. But when they returned, one of them was missing. What had happened to her? Where was she? And was it really the ghost of Grace Highbury they’d all seen in the garden? Justice just knew she had to solve the mystery and find their friend before something bad happened…

The Ghost in the Garden is the 3rd in the Justice Jones series by Elly Griffiths and it was loads of fun. Justice gets herself into mischief always – each book is a different adventure for her, and her headmistress despairs of her. I’m hoping the author is writing another episode in this series – I’ve bought the set so far for my granddaughters. Recommended for middle grade people, and others who haven’t been middle grade in a long time 😉

This was the most enjoyable in the series yet! I really hope this series continues. As in the previous books, Justice, a pupil at a private boarding school for girls, solves mysteries with the help of her school friends and Dorothy who is a maid. The characters are wonderful and the mystery was fun to piece together.

A couple of things were downsides for us, this is set in 1937 but this could be set in a boarding school now, apart from a mention of a wireless you wouldn’t know it wasn’t set so long ago. I would love some details of the era, the girls spoke as someone would speak today. Language at a private girls school from that era would have been full of what-ho, super, jolly, beastly, spiffing, horrid….
We read this as a read aloud, and it’s fun to do voices but some effort put into including some words from that era would have really added to the story. The cover is awful, how can they think a girl from the 1930s would be wearing a cerise pink and purple dressing gown and pyjamas? The cover also makes the book look as though it’s aimed at younger children, which is a pity because it’s one of those books that can be enjoyable for any age.

We loved the conclusion and the idea Justice’s father has, looking forward to the next Justice adventure!

A Ghost In The Garden is the third book in the Justice Jones series for junior readers, by British author, Elly Griffiths. For the Autumn Term of 1937, Justice is looking forward to her return to Highbury House, School for the Daughters of Gentlefolk. She will miss her dad, but is eager to catch up with her friends, especially Stella and Dorothy.

They learn at assembly that they have a new Matron, and a (quirky, it turns out later) new art teacher who has very unconventional teaching methods, as well as a new gardener. Justice is stunned to be made Form Captain, and very pleased when Stella is made Form Sports Captain.

A new student is inserted into the Barnowls Dormy, and has the whole school agog with her casual defiance of school rules, apparently with impunity: could this be because the Honorable Letitia Blackstock’s father is a peer? Letty seems to have an enthusiasm for horse-riding and mischief, earning Justice order marks and lines.

She seems eager to be friends with Justice, but are her overtures of friendship genuine? It is disturbing for Justice that she seems to want to supplant the best friend roles that Stella and Dorothy currently hold, both of whom soon take offence.

Then, after a midnight feast in the old barn and a sighting of the school ghost, one of the girls from her Dormy goes missing. Is it an elaborate prank? A ransom note formed from a crime novel seems to indicate not. When she finds a similarly fashioned note summoning her to a midnight rendezvous at the (haunted) Tower, Justice, never able to resist such intrigue, .ignores strict orders from the headmistress to stay in, to her detriment.

Justice’s narrative is supplemented by letters to and from her father, Herbert Jones KC, and entries into her journal. In this instalment, Justice gets to ride a horse, spends time in sick bay, is thrilled to be charged with a duty to keep her eyes and ears open by DI Deacon of Scotland Yard, and surprised to be enlisted to help snobbish sixth-former, Helena Bliss.

This is another delightful novel for young readers that can be equally enjoyed by those of a more advanced vintage. More of Justice Jones is definitely welcome. Recommended!

I’m going to sound like a broken record, but I don’t care-I LOVE these books. This is the 3rd in the series, & they just get better & better. This 1 includes a new student Letitia, who has never been to school before, is very wealthy, doesn’t care about rules, & attaches herself to Justice causing problems with her other friendships. I loved her being added to this cast of amazing characters, & shaking things up a bit. There’s new teachers, new mysteries, & new adventures as usual. Each just as incredible as the previous. That’s about all I can say, but these are just such a great time. Cozy, historical fiction whodunnit mysteries, with phenomenal characters, & superb writing. HIGHLY recommend. Another BEAUTIFUL cover by Nan Lawson as well.💜

It’s book number three in the Justice Jones mystery series by Elly Griffiths, and I couldn’t be more pleased with this continuing collection of clever mysteries. When I describe the series to others, I include the effect each book has had on me, that of returning to my youthful delight of first falling in love with mysteries. The elements of true detection and perseverance takes the reader on an adventure where the suspense never loses its edge. These are stories that may be categorized as children’s mysteries, but they are far too good to give over completely to the young sleuth fans. I buy two copies of each book, one for my granddaughter and one for me.

Justice is thirteen and returning for her third term at Highbury Academy for Girls, and this time she’s actually looking forward to it. Seeing her best friends Stella and Dorothy has her excited, but it won’t be smooth sailing with her besties, as a new girl has joined the Barnowls dormy. Letitia Blackstock is truly one of the daughters of gentlefolk the school caters to, as her parents are extremely wealthy. Letitia takes full advantage of her treasured position at the school, not caring much for rules and seemingly getting away with it by the staff. Letitia has latched onto Justice as a friend, and both Stella, a fellow Barnowl, and Dorothy, a maid, aren’t too happy about Letitia butting into their close trio. Justice herself is unsure how to handle Letitia, and she doesn’t want to lose her closeness with Stella and Dorothy, but the Headmistress Miss de Vere asks Justice to help Letitia acclimate to the school. Dorothy is Justice’s enthusiastic partner in solving mysteries at Highbury, and Stella is her less enthusiastic but still willing other partner in following the trail of evidence. They really don’t need someone meddling in their business.

The one broken rule you can depend on in Justice’s time at Highbury is not leaving your dormy after lights out. Justice does her best clue searching at night, slinking around the large old house, sometimes with Dorothy, sometimes with Stella, and often by herself. She has discovered a couple of ways to go outside to the grounds of the house at night, and it’s just as atmospheric as you think it might be, reading about Justice’s visits to the old tower or the empty disused swimming pool. Justice has nerves of steel and a confidence gained from reading her late mother’s detective books. The head mistress, Miss Delores de Vere, despairs of Justice’s boldness in pursuing the mysteries that seem so at home at Highbury. With Justice’s father Herbert, who is a busy London Barrister, having an apparently long standing friendship (something Justice still doesn’t understand) with Miss de Vere, Justice always manages to avoid being expelled.

After spending the Half Holiday with Letitia at her family’s nearby estate, Letitia’s mother has sent the two girls back to school with an enormous amount of food treats. As is the tradition goody baskets from home are shared with the whole dormy, so the Barnowls plan their feast. Letitia, who seems to like breaking rules as much as Justice, suggests they take their bounty to the Haunted Tower on the grounds at midnight, but practical Stella reminds them it will be locked. Justice comes up with the barn next to the ice house as an acceptable location, acceptable only because the ghost of Grace Highbury is said to walk in the gardens there. So, they sneak out to the barn that night and after gorging themselves on cakes and sandwiches, they hear a scream and see a ghostly figure who looks like a young girl. Their response is to run for the house and get back to their room. But, as they recover from the excitement, they notice Letitia is missing. Thus begins Justice’s new mystery challenge to solve. As usual, it has some thrilling twists and a surprising resolution.

This series has a trifecta of perfect elements coming together. The time setting for mystery/crime couldn’t be more perfect for highlighting pure detecting, without use of fancy or electronic devices. The time period is 1937, so Justice and her sleuthing team must depend on the little grey cells that Hercule Poirot so often refers to in his work. There are no cell phone distractions or Google or 911 (999 in the UK). The geographic setting is perfect for mystery, too, as Highbury House, School for the Daughters of Gentlefolk, is located on the edges of the Romney Marsh area of southeast England, a remote, isolated setting. A bad storm, rain or snow, can completely cut the school off from the rest of the world. And, Highbury House itself seems made for mystery, with its turrets and tunnels and cellars and a new hidden feature in this book, a priest hole. The character of Justic is yet another brilliant stroke of genius on the author’s part. Justice, having grown up until age eleven with a mother who wrote mystery novels and a father who is involved in murder trials, has an advantage in gearing her thinking toward clues and evidence. But, she also seems just naturally inclined in working out puzzling situations. She keeps a journal of clues and evidence and suspects and observations. I like that the time period requires her to rely on herself as the resource, to dig for clues and do research from scratch, so to speak. So, time setting, physical setting, and character form an impressive trio of elements collaborating to support an always exceptional story. And, I must give kudos to the covers for this series for disproving the old adage you can’t tell a book by its cover. Well, in this series, yes, you can. They are truly works of art that are matched inside by a work-of-art story.

It seems I can’t close a review of anything written by Elly Griffiths without a mention of how masterful she is in creating characters, both main and supporting. Besides the main character and regular amazing cast, the author always includes new characters who are fascinating and integral to the plot. I have long ago pronounced Elly Griffiths as Queen of Character Creation. Of course, these clever characters are lucky to be woven into a story worthy of them, plotted by a person born to tell stories. And, don’t forget the Ruth Galloway series, the Brighton (Stephens and Mephisto) series, and the stand-alones by Elly Griffiths. To find an author who is so talented and so versatile is truly one of my most treasured reading discoveries. Enjoy them all.

#3in the series but the first one I’ve read. I must point out that I’m not the target audience for these books but love Elly Griffiths writing and wanted to try it.
I like the maps and the list in the beginning of who is who.
Following the death of her mystery author mother Justice Jones was packed off to Highbury House a boarding school for daughters of gentle folk on the Kent coast by her busy Barrister father. This is a culture shock for her as previously she had been home schooled by her mom.
The book is set in 1937, a by gone era when life was very different which a much more defined social class system. I like that Justice defies the traditions of the class system and is as equally friendly with Dorothy one of the maids from the school as other pupils. Dorothy is one of Justice’s partners in mystery solving gang.
It’s from 1937 but it doesn’t have the stuffy language of the era, just enough to add the favour of the time.
Justice is 13, in the third academic year and her second year at the school. She is a newly appointed form Captain.
Highbury House is an old gothic building with turrets and cellars with secret tunnels and a priest hole. In moody weather it looks intimidating.
It is predominantly a character study of Justice in the boarding school environment with mystery to solve added into the mix.
There were some things that I had to look up like junket and divided skirts, so learning new (or more accurately old things)
I like the art work with the bird and leaves at the start of each chapter.
I totally loved it, and warmed to all of the girls characters. Justice is gutsy, and has all the attributes of a good sleuth. Once she leaves school she would make a great PI.

The newest Justice Jones, and this time miscommunication, a mystery, a kidnapping, and tons of fun!

A new term is here and I was so hyped when I saw this book at the library! This series is just so fun. Historical fiction x boarding school x mystery. Sign me up any day!

The mystery was fab, it took quite long before it all started, but I didn’t mind that the rest of the book was also fun with boarding school stuff, some weird things happening, and more. But the mystery? When it started? YES! A kidnapping. Mysterious letters made with words for Justice’s mom her books. Codes and secrets. Who is the culprit and why? I just loved that Justice tried to help out and got more entangled as things went on. In her defence, she did try to observe, but hey, she is Justice and things just grab her. XD

But I just wasn’t a fan of Letitia in the beginning. I get it you want to be friends and such, but friendship doesn’t come by stalking people, just inserting yourself in the group without any consideration whatsoever. Later on I could see she was a sweetheart and really tried her best and I hope we see more of her in the next installations. I loved how she allowed Justice to come along to her home and even helped her get over her fear of horses!

I also wasn’t a fan of the miscommunication trope. Both Dorothy and Stella are not my favourites in this one. Instead of talking and just airing it all, I mean, Justice has told you Dorothy that Letitia FOLLOWED her, and yes, maybe she could have said something when a mystery appeared, but to be so huffy about it? Ridiculous. Same for Stella, who is apparently not having it that Justice is being followed and friended by Letitia. Heaven’s forbid that your best friend has yet another friend. rolls eyes.

Oh, and I was surprised by Helena!

I was absolutely delighted with the ending. One it was exciting because everything got together and the mystery was solved, but also something else happened that made me smile! I won’t spoil it of course.

All in all, I need more of Justice Jones and her friends. I am curious what is next. What mystery is to be solved. And if the school ever will

This is suitable for younger readers and at just under 200 pages it’s a short, snappy read. An easy read. But one full of mystery, Adventure and detective skills. This is book three in a series which I didn’t know at the time but reads well as a Standalone.
The story focuses on the main character Justice. Set at a boarding school wierd things begin to happen and the new girl goes missing… presumed kidnapped. Plenty of twists and turns to this outcome. A great little mystery/detective read for younger ones. Brilliantly written. I loved it. Devoured it. Highly recommend. A well deserved four stars from me.

This is my favorite children's mystery series that is currently published. Sadly my library does not have it so I have to wait until I can access it through the ILL services. We are following Justice Jones who is attending her third year at a boarding school. While she has started to enjoy it more , it is bittersweet to be away from her widower father. Her mother passed away and was a successful detective fiction author and her father is an attorney. However, when she arrives for her third year there is a new girl that stirs things up. Naturally a mystery arises and Justice sets out to solve it. Highly recommend

A new girl arrives at Highbury House School for the Daughters of Gentlefolk. She’s never been to school before and seems to take great delight in breaking all the rules yet the teachers don’t seem to care. The mischief becomes more serious, however, when one of the girls disappears and a ransom for her return is delivered. With a ghost spotted in the garden and threatening notes being written on the pages of one of her mother’s books, amateur sleuth Justice Jones, has another case on her hands.

Despite being ‘slightly’ older than the intended audience, this is a series that I am loving! Growing up, my favourite books were Enid Blyton’s Five Find Outers series and I have always loved the idea of children becoming amateur sleuths, something that I probably secretly longed to be myself! In Justice Jones, we have a strong, likeable character, one who would not be out of place in any of Blyton’s boarding school books. The supporting cast are just as good, and I particularly like the relationship Justice has with one of the maids, highlighting the class inequality that existed at the time.

This is a well-written mystery story with clues revealed throughout the book, even though you don’t know it at the time. I liked how even what seemed like a throwaway comment ended up forming part of the plot, making you suspicious of everyone and everything!

I’m a huge fan of Elly Griffiths’ Brighton Mysteries and her Ruth Galloway series, and this is another one that has got me hooked!

Justice Jones and her fellow Barnowlers are in the third form now, and they have a new classmate: Leticia Blackstock, the daughter of a very rich man who seems to think that she can flout any rules that she doesn’t like - and the teachers at Highbury House Boarding School for the Daughters of Gentlefolk are letting her get away with it! But when a midnight feast goes wrong and Leticia disappears, Justice knows that she must once again bring her sleuthing skills to solve the mystery, before it is too late…. The Justice Jones books are meant for middle school children, particularly girls, but as an elderly reader I find I’m enjoying them just as much as those kids would. I have some knowledge of the girls’ boarding school genre that is popular in the UK, and of course today’s children all have knowledge of Hogwarts, which is modeled on the same concept. Justice is a very determined and resourceful 12-year-old, one many girls will identify with, and the mysteries that she has to solve range from rather minor to very serious indeed. The series is a lot of fun, and I hope it continues; recommended!

I was keen to read this book because I am a fan of Elly Griffiths’ adult books and I was not disappointed. This is the third book in the Justice Jones series and you don’t need to have read the other two to enjoy this book, although given the choice I probably would start at the beginning (but that is just me!)
The action takes place at Highbury House, a boarding school for the daughters of gentlefolk. It compares well with Enid Blyton’s St Clare’s and Malory Towers, being a more modern retelling of times gone by. Justice and her friends, old and new, experience both mundane schooldays and exciting adventures.
The book is beautifully presented and as always, Elly Griffiths grips you from the start with her well told story. It will intrigue young fans of detective and mystery novels, is fast paced and well balanced with fun and spookiness. It is very readable and keeps you guessing until the end.

A new term, a new student, a new matron, a new gardener...all ingredients for another mystery at Justice's boarding school. I felt, though, that this novel was setting up circumstances that would play themselves out in subsequent sequels: Class consciousness, for instance. Letitia, from a titled family, joins the barn owls, and while laudably independent, she does not regard "the help" as equals. And Dorothy, who is not only the kitchen maid but friends with Justice, is going to have her tuition paid by Justice's father so she can go to school, too, and not be a maid anymore. And then love interest: we have the relationship between Justice's father and the head mistress. (I have in my mind how this plot could play itself out to a satisfactory conclusion.) I can hardly wait to read what Griffiths will do with this, though I expect it will come much later in the series and I will have to wait awhile to enjoy it).

This was a lovely read for a bank holiday, sitting in the sun.
I very much liked the atmosphere of the book. As I am not in the target group, I may look at the characters a bit differently. All the more to enjoy.

This story finds Justice in her third year at school, meeting old friends again. A new girl comes to school and she also wants to be friends with Justice. This leads to misunderstandings with her friends and to different attitudes from the other girls.
Then the new girl disappears. Is she playing a prank on the other pupils? On her teachers? Or on her parents? Or was she abducted? Justice is determined to solve the puzzle, but it is not easy to stay out of trouble...

Another lovely story for a beatiful sunny day. Looking forward to the next one. Enjoy!

The third Justice Jones mystery in the series (of four so far) written by a talented, favorite, adult mystery writer is written for 'tweenagers, with a touch of "cozy" but unforeseeable "who done it" . Justice is an excellent character, full of mischief, often doing the opposite to what she’s ‘told’, with a caring, compassionate nature.

Now we are not surprised when Justice follows her own spirit. We know the personalities of her two best friends, her classmates and teachers at Highbury House Boarding School for the Daughters of Gentlefolk. Now Griffiths adds the new girl to the class that Justice must deal with and a surprise change to a previous formidable character as the story developes. I think this is the best of the series so far. I hope I can find book 4 soon.

Another day, another book finished, what a luxury of a weekend! I'm glad I read this after the second book, as I was mentally still at Highbury House.
I felt this book got straight into the narrative, introducing new characters, and a change of the norm.
When one of Justice's new friend and classmate disappears, Justice finds herself once again wearing her detective hat, much to the distain of the adults in her life.

I really enjoyed this book, and can't wait to get my hands on book 4,when it is released next month.

If you're a fan of Wells and Wong, Nancy Drew, or YA detective books I'd highly recommend this book series, but suggest reading them back to back.
