Althea and Maeve never asked for eternal life. Born in the early sixteenth century, their survival depended on hiding their special abilities from the superstitious village people they lived among. Controlling the elements and healing animals would get a person executed for witchery.
As they grew older Maeve got tired of hiding and that’s when disaster followed. Soon the twin-sisters would come to wish that their abilities included going back in time to change tragic events.

OMG!!!! This book was crazy, I can't believe all the emotion it brought out in me. I've read every book of Elin Peer and Pearl Beacon this is no exception to their extreme talent for story telling. The story was incredible and has adventure, action, love, hate, laughter and tears. I highly recommend this book, I can't wait until the next one comes out because I can't wait to see what happens next. I got this ARC book free for an honest review. Happy Reading!!!!
I wasn’t sure what to expect however, I should have known these ladies were going to produce another fabulous story. I have read every book Elin Peer and Pearl Beacon has written and this series just proves to me that these ladies know How to tell a great story. I can’t wait to read the next in the series to see what will become of Maeve and Althea. As well As Damon, he is going to Be a huge factor in these book I believe. Write fast ladies. I am ready for the next book!
In this new adult fantasy series that Elin Peer writes with her daughter Pearl Beacon, we meet the twins Althea and Maeve who are born with special gifts (they are Eathens), which in the 16th century are confused with witchcraft. They have to hide these gifts, and as they grow up, Maeve is dazzled by the human way of life, whereas Althea chooses to live more anonymously and in harmony with nature and make use of her gifts such as to heal and help the Humans when they need help. It is a completely different genre than Elin Peer and Pearl Beacon have previously written. A book that took me by storm and went through almost the entire emotional register. A truly WOW experience and it was hard to put the book down. I can highly recommend reading this book / series.
This is not the kind of story I normally go for but this mother daughter duo has shown so much growth in just the few books they’ve written together I couldn’t help but love it.
All the different characters in this amazing fairytale have so much depth. I can’t wait to see where things are headed in the next book.
Wow! I wasn’t sure what to expect in this book but it was a brilliant series opener. Maeve and Althea as twins that couldn’t have become more different from each other. This book is thought provoking and different. Although this book has so far lacked the normal romance element to Elin Peer’s other books, I think that it has very cleverly set the scene for the rest of the series. I can’t wait to see what awaits Maeve, Althea, Damon and possibly Charles. It’s a must read for sure.
This was a great story. It was a adult version of witchcraft (kind of gave me twitches vibes) that we needed. I honestly loved it. I am a sucker for a male character named Damon (I am a Vampire Diaries fan). I highly recommend this and I couldn’t put it down!
This was a nice spin on fantasy and I enjoyed it a lot and can’t wait for me. I’m looking forward to seeing how the rest of this series pans out after this one
It started promising with magical twin sisters who grew up in a magic-hostile world. Later on the story couldn't hold my interest. Not bad but not my cup of tea.
Readers are you ready..? I have read so so many stories that start the same way..witches are discovered-town folks burn them at the stake blah blah blah...BUT not this story ....O No not this story. Yes the story is about witches but the Twins are a nice twist and unlike most stories I love how you can totally tell how this 1st book of the series is going to totally create outstanding characters for the other books to come. The characters are the Good and Bad in all of us. Can't wait for the Next Book.😍 Mrs.C 💋
Most books that I have read written by Elin Peer and her daughter, Pearl Beacon, I have found to be entertaining and uplifting – always thought-provoking with a positive message. This story is no exception and yet it conveys a much darker side of the human or perhaps non-human condition. Maeve and Althea, as twin sisters, grew up as close as can be but later came to deal with life events – loss and disappointment – completely differently and demonstrate the contrast of good versus evil and how our personal choices can either lead to discontentment or happiness. Which path is truly more fulfilling – a life of material luxury or one with a sense of gratitude and a connection with and service to others?
The harsh judgments of others who are too quick to condemn and those who are insincere, lie, manipulate and take advantage of others for their own pleasure are characterized in this story. There is much display of cruelty towards others that I wasn’t expecting but I concede was necessary to the plot. I am not sure where all this is going but I am willing to continue the series to find out.
There are other points of interest such as the question of immortality in the same physical body. Yes, our souls are immortal but to never depart one’s body or grow old while others continue to do so may sound far-fetched and strange but may be closer in reality than we think. How might such an opportunity be a good thing rather than a curse? Can a civilized community create safe harbor from the current threats of the world? These are all questions other readers may ponder or simply choose to ignore and get lost in the story. I am always looking for the hidden or overt messages especially if a story is actually unsettling to me then I can feel that it was not a waste of my time.
This book took me on an emotional rollercoaster ride
I’ve always been a massive fan of the books of Elin Peer and recently, Elin has been writing with her daughter, Pearl Beacon. Together, they created their new trilogy: Orenda. I must admit this was an unexpected storyline, dark, emotional but amazing.
Brief Summary of the Storyline: During the 16th century, the two main characters, twin-sisters Althea and Maeve have to learn from a very young age how to hide their magical abilities. Not only do they have to hide from the humans who hunt witches, but also from other predators who traverse the world with the only goal to destroy people like them. Slowly, Althea and Maeve have no choice but to confront their fate.
Overall Opinion: I felt that Althea and Maeve were like a coin, as one due to their similarities as twins but like head versus tail with their different personalities. I like that the book set up nicely all the protagonists together. I felt that each of the characters were like pieces on a chess board. Every move each of them made had massive consequences. I was very touched and cried when reading some passages of the book. You cannot remain insensitive when reading this story. Furthermore, this is a very dark tale about two sisters and their fate. Elin and Pearl created a fantastic work by building a clever story with lots of sub plots.
A family is torn apart by magic, with a father's love he knew that he had passed his magic to his girls but he could control his but his twin daughters were too young yet to understand that they would have to keep that type of thing from being seen their mother took them to the witch hangings in town to show what they should never do, not really knowing why the women were being hanged left the girls confused. Something terrible happened at the place their father worked one day after they came from just such a hanging and they had a big argument between them not realizing they were the cause and he knew that the girls had to be taken away he took them to a secret place and to someone he never expected to see again. Rose, Aletha, and Maeve spent many years together in the woods learning their craft from Rose. Maeve wanted so much more out of life than her sister and she thought she had it but it was only an elusion. Maeve would not be taken lightly by anyone and she set out to make sure that it would never happen again and something within changed forever for both the sisters. Orenda came one day and ask Maeve to do something she would not do without her sister but Orenda told her she would have to do it alone. Aletha has to find her own way in the world until she meets another Earthen like herself. An exceptional storyline and the characters keep you excited and turning page after page until the end. Book 1. I read a copy via BookFunnel without obligation. I volunteered an honest review.
New fantastic series! I have read all published books by Elin Peer and they have all become my favorites! Over time, Pearl Beacon has started to get more into the writing of these books, and she does it fantastic! This is the second series of this wonderful mother / daughter duo and they do a fantastic job! A different genre than before, but it is by no means a bad thing. It's so exciting and so much something you can relate to in your own life. Although it was written as a past time in history, it is still very relateble to this time. Siblings who slide apart, people around one who influences one on both good and bad, power relations, and relationships between young people on both good and bad as well. The fact that you go your own way and struggle to find yourself, even if you make wrong choices. I can't wait at all for the next one to come! I'm so excited about what happens next, with the new twists we meet at the end of the book! Write fast! We are all looking forward to it! Thank you for being awesome authors <3
Curse of Immortality - the first book in Elin Peer’s and her daughter Pearl Beacon’s new triology Orienda. Althea and Maove are twin sisters with special gifts that it is best not to show in public in the 16th century. The so called Eathens get the blame for bad things that happen and people even burn them like witches. Their father tries to protect them by letting them stay with his sister Rose in a cottage in the woods where she teaches them how to use old recipes and healing to help people in the neighborhood without putting themselves in danger of being seen as using witchcraft. Mauve is drawn to normal life and falls in love with a wealthy man who is not to be trusted and his promise to marry her is just empty words. She uses her power to take revenge and be successful in business. Her sister Althea continues her healing work together with her aunt. How different their lives turn out because of the direction from their choices. What will happen if and when their paths cross? That is the question you are left with until we meet them again To be continued………
Heads up there are some triggering situations in this book that not everyone will appreciate. I rated this book zero spice because the only intimate situation ended up with an abusive partner and it wasn't a very spicy scene.
I really enjoyed reading Orenda, it was a great story with an awesome plot and relatable characters. Orenda was written in the third person perspective which allowed you to get to know all of the characters in each moment - this was kind of refreshing as most books that I read seem to be in first person.
I felt so bad for all of the horrible things that befell Maeve throughout the book, though she brought some of it on herself. Maeves character development is really well written and I'm rooting for her to turn herself around, but things aren't looking optimistic for her.
I really resonated with Althea's character and I hope that Daemon is her love interest in the next book.

Twin girls. Both were raised together. How can one be so different from the other? Althea and Maeve live in the 16th century and have to hide their powers. Their father was an Earthling, their mother a human (and not a nice person). To save his daughters, they are taken to his sister, Rose, to raise them and teach them. But evil has a way of showing up, and lives are forever impacted after the dice have rolled. The journey for the sisters is so diverse. Of course, being a trilogy, book one stops in such an exciting part of this journey that left me wanting the next book so I could continue reading this remarkable story.
The first book in Elin Peer's and Pearl Beacon's new fantasy series begins by introducing a set of twins named Althea and Maeve. It takes place in a time when witches are persecuted and eliminated. The twins are born Earthens, whose lives are linked to nature, can manipulate their environment to a degree and have the ability to heal animals and humans alike. As adults, they take different paths. One sister takes up working with an evil immortal named " The Cobra". The other helps to unite other Earthens. Rest assured, I've only lightly touched upon the emotions and the action taking place in the story. It's time to read Orenda because book 2 is going to be exciting.
There is nothing better than reading something written by mother daughter duo, Elin Peer and her daughter Pearl Beacon. The book involves many emotional and familial ups and downs of sisters. Read the book to find out the details. This first book is something that I did not expect, but I did find it very interesting the way it was written. The way these ladies tackle this book make it seem like I was a witness to something magical, which was fantastic. Who doesn’t want something magical happen to them? The way the ladies tackle this book makes the reader wanting and waiting for more. This book is just a precursor to other fabulous works to come from this dynamic duo.
If you’re new to the experience of reading this phenomenal writing duo, I highly suggest you give them a try. Their world building is unmatched in my opinion, I have not read any other authors with their level of imaginative skill in fantasy writing. You forget you are reading something that isn’t real. What begins as a witch trials like beginning, leaves Maeve and Althea in a tough spot, and having to hide their abilities. When their abilities lead them to a much more dangerous route, one sister embodies good, the other turns toward darkness. I have not read anything like this in the past, it is hard to put down. I cant wait to see where it goes from here!!
Enthralling story spanning lifetimes! The story telling skills of both Elin & daughter Pearl leaves you needing more! The foundation for this series is firmly set in Book 1, and definitely need to read the next book as soon as humanly possible. 😊 The path the twins travel, while seemingly parallel for most of their lives, diverge after sustaining a terrible event. And when you think you might have the story figured out, another curve in the road rises up to meet you and turn you down a different path. Great work!
Being twins has always kept Maeve and Althea close Maeve is a girl with a heart of the “world”. Althea is simple and doesn’t have any use for world or its possessions. After suffering a childhood trauma the girls take measures to change the outcome of both lives. Author has the unique ability to write novels that make reader think about other possibilities. Orenda ends up being one of my favorites.. The pages or screens of novel turn with ease and wonder of the next Come get lost in the world of Orenda.
The twins are magical witches who goes together for the most of the story. They are engrossed of their lives extending for years. As their Aunt is destroyed by people who seek to all witches. The twins separate to see one, Maeve, goes wild to seek revenge to the towns where Aunt is burned. The story comes to the first end as a paranormal is created by a safe town for non humans to unable to attack the witches. Much information provides the interest of action, and creates suspense. As the comes to the close much of action will continue in the next book.
Maeve and Althea are twin sisters but also Earthens, magical healers. They are spirited away to live with their aunt, isolated in the forest, to keep them safe from being burned as witches. All is well until they grow up and Maeve wants more in her life. This is where they separate and seek different paths. This is a very interesting story told in an easy to read style. My only complaint is that the story lacks warmth. It needs closer relationships and interaction. It's a great preview of what's to come and I for one will be reading it.
I was ready for a new setting. Turned out to be a flighty fairy tale. Before long though, mighty magic led to terrific horrors and outlandish sights. Our beloved twins have been betrayed and have become enemies though they seem to be immortal! I think this fact leads to the reader not getting a HEA ending. We were warned this was an adult tale (requiring patience, not knowledge about the birds and the bees).

The eternal fight of good vs evil in a new fantasy adventure story. This writing team is excellent and you can always count on a good story with amazing twists, excellent character development and fantastic world building. Wasn't thrilled with a cliff at the end but it's totally worth the story. I loved how the characters start and then become something more and something else due to the circumstances. Eagerly awaiting the next book.
What a great first installment of a new series. There is so much in this one story. Family, friends, enemies, love, new worlds, and a lot of time passes in it’s telling. The sisters Maeve and Althea are amazingly written and seem to be opposites while also being similar. I love the conflicts and emotions. I can not wait to see how the story ends
When I see the name Elin Peer I one click without hesitation. I love her stories. This book is a fantasy pnr story with all sorts of creatures like witches, gleaners, faders and humans. It’s an adult fairy tale and is absolutely brilliant.
