A Paranormal Women’s Fiction murder mystery for those who believe life can be magical at any age.
‘Happily Ever After’ isn’t working out as she planned.
With her powers failing in middle-age, and tired of following the rules and getting nowhere, Oracle Sigourney Maltei returns to her hometown of Brimstone Bay seeking a do-over. Plagued with life-long ill health and now jobless too, she needs a miracle – and she might just know how to get one.
She has just enough juice left in her psychic-tank to stumble upon the answer to all of her prayers – a genie. Fresh new start – here she comes!
Except genies are never quite what they seem.
Hers is Charming by name, but tricky and quarrelsome by nature, and far too handsome for his own good. Worse, he insists that wishes won’t work, and the key to her happy future lies in her dark past.
Sigourney must solve the decades old mystery of her mother’s death and catch a notorious murderer, something sure to make her more enemies in this magical town.
But where there is danger, there are miracles in waiting.
Hurled into a whole new adventure, Sigourney feels more alive at forty-four than ever before. Goodbye rule-book – this time she’s doing things her own way.
Read it now and join Sigourney on the first enchanting cozy mystery adventure of her midlife!
I received this book as an ARC through Booksprout but this review is all my own!
I really enjoyed this book - it was engaging, fun with great characters and plots too. Sigourney is an Oracle. However at the age of 44, her ill health is catching up with her and before her body gives in for good, she is determined to solve the mystery of her mother's death and bring her killer to justice before he returns to take Sigourney's life as well. She knows of only one thing that could possibly help, but this thing can only be found in the one place she really doesn't want to go - Brimstone Bay, her hometown, where her father rules the local vampire nest!
Sigourney manages to find what she was looking for, by pure accident really (or was it the intervention of someone else?!) and Charming, a real life genie in a lamp, assures her that granting her the three wishes will not be the answer to her problems. They will only make her pay a hefty price, but little does she realise what that price will be.
On the hunt for her mother's killer, being hired to prove the innocence of a possible murderer, whilst avoiding being caught by various organisations that are after her is not easy and the price she pays for her first wish has changed everything Sigourney ever knew!
I loved the interweaving of all the various characters and sub-plots of this book and the Reaper is fabulous villain. He is so intriguing (if it is a he; it may well be female for all we know!) - I need to know how he has managed to stay one step of the game every time! How does he know who these hidden women are?! Charming was a great character, not yet a love interest, but there was definitely more to him than just being a genie in a lamp! The friendship and trust was slowly building between him and Sigourney and I hope that he is back again in the next book!
i would have liked to see more about Sigourney's background, especially her upbringing in a vampire's nest, but maybe that's for another day! And the cliffhanger revelation at the end was very unexpected - maybe I need to read between the lines a bit more, but it completely shocked me! So looking forward to seeing how that pans out too!
A great start to this new series and this new-to-me author as well.
This is book one of The Midlife Wishes series and the main character is Oracle and seer Her Grace Sigourney Maltei, who is a sanguith, daughter of a very powerful vampire and a succubus. She has managed to survive to the good old age of forty four, which is well over the norm for one of her kind. She has lived a life of pain, with brittle bones that break at the merest knock, and kept by an employer for her powers, until she could escape. Her powers have been decreasing as she aged and she had been trying to keep that from her employer, before she could get away. She has returned to her former hometown of Brimstone Bay to find a genie, that her powers have led her to, so she can make her wishes to stop the serial killer called the Reaper, who killed her mother in front of her when she was only two. She wants to protect the daughter she had when she was eighteen, an event both conception and birth that she is unable to remember, as the Reaper likes to kill mothers in front of their daughters and then when the daughter has a child, to repeat the process. She was told her daughter died at birth, but she has always had the feeling that she was still alive somewhere, she just doesn’t know where and doesn’t want to lead the killer to her door!
She no longer has a home, job or any money, as well as failing health, never mind that she is now back in close proximity to her father, who may want to kill her on sight. She manages to find the lamp, by falling over it and goes to get blood, before making her first wish. The genie turns out to be the man she met in the vampire nightclub and goes by the moniker Mr Charming, but he is anything but! He tries to persuade her not to make any wishes, warning her that there is always a cost that has to be paid and she should work out her own problems by looking back into her dark past. Anything she wants him to help her with, he refuses to do unless she wants to make a wish. She refuses to use up her valuable three wishes on something trivial. She needs to find any witnesses to her mother’s murder, but also solve the one case she has never been able to, that of a ghostly figure of a young girl who always appears by her side every day. All other figures who haunt her in this way, have always been solved by using her powers, allowing them to finally move on from their tragic ends.
She soon finds herself mixed into an investigation of a very powerful vampire family, the Thanes, with the help of her half-brother, and a very convoluted secret about events that led to Gaia Thane being imprisoned for murder of a human guest in her family home. She has persuaded Sigourney to prove her innocence, in exchange for information about the identity of the Reaper. The genie can’t accommodate her first wish, as he is not allowed to kill anyone, nor have anyone else to kill for the person making the wish! She has to do what she desires the hard way and make it her own way. A difficult price is paid for her first wish, which devastates her, but she has new energy and feels more alive than she ever has, so not everything has turned out badly. She has a very twisted family dynamic to contend with, where numerous people could be the true suspects behind the young girl’s murder and someone who is also hiding information about Sigourney’s own child. A deadly and twisted ending as the Reaper strikes again and leaves a cryptic note behind for Sigourney. Looks like she still has a long road ahead and lots more to do with the genie. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
A fab cosy murder mystery with a contrary genie-oracle romance
At 44, after doing a good deed, oracle Sigourney Maltei finds herself jobless, homeless, friendless and a wanted woman. A fragile-boned psychic who drinks blood and sees ghosts? Certainly an interesting creature. The more so when she teams up with a genie called Charming. A whole new kettle of fish with princes, I tell you. The book grips you from the start & quickly progresses into a murder mystery. I guessed for a long time what a Humble was or what the difference between a sanguith and a dhampire is as this isn’t explained, but the dynamics between Sigourney and Charming was fab and the story kept me enthralled. Definitely looking forward to the sequel Something Sinister This Way Comes.
Recommended for lovers of cosy murder mysteries, mythological being mashups, magical powers mashups, vampire thrillers and contrary romances between strong-headed heroines & dastardly heros.
Things are looking dreary for Oracle Sigourney Maltei as she returns to her hometown of Brimstone Bay. She turns to a genie named Charming to get her out of her funk. But he insists that magic is not the way. Instead, Sigourney must not only solve the decades old mystery of her mother’s death, but also catch a notorious murderer, something that is certain to earn her more enemies in this magical town. But to her surprise, diving into this new adventure and throwing away the rule book makes her feel more alive than ever! Has she found her true calling?
I really enjoyed reading this book with its well-paced story line. The interaction among the characters helps to bring the story to life and keeps the reader intrigued. Action-packed, entertaining, and clever, this book is definitely worth experiencing. I eagerly look forward to the next one in the series!
Sigourney wakes up in the forest, she doesn't remember getting there. She knows that she has to find her daughter before it is to late. The Reaper will be coming for her sooner or later. She is too weak in her current state. Sigourney has her mind set on finding the genie. Sigourney finds what she is looking for but at what cost. Sigourney is going to on quite the journey in this book.
This was a great book featuring Sigourney as we are introduced to her journey. She will have a lot of bumps in the road and it is only the beginning. I really like Sigourney and Charming together. I am really looking forward to more in this series. I didn't want to give to much away, there is so much more to what I wrote. I recommend reading.
After meeting Sigourney in the Witches of Brimstone Bay, I wasn't too keen on her. However, she grew on me in this one. As did Charming, who was a bit of a stinker who never explained anything to her until it was too late. Or course my favorite scenes included Oberon who I adore. Having found her genie, Sigourney made her first wish but it wasn't without a cost. Turns out she would need the help of others if she was going to find a serial killer and eventually, her daughter. When tasked with helping a convicted murderer who claims innocence find the real killer, she isn't sure if she wants to get involved. Turns out she may regret it when she does solve the decade old case.
What I am finding in many of the new writer e-books is mispellings/wrong word that sounds like the word being used. It is distracting and annoying with apps like grammar and such that the author does not check their work for spelling/tense and such. The story is top notch and very entertaining, however, the distraction of the typo's and wrong word used is why I gave the book a 4 star. Sad that something that AI could handle is not utilized more.
Past that, the story line by this author's work is engaging, entertaining and should be in libraries. But the editing/proofreading is why my library won't carry these types of books. Rightfully so.
Oracle Sigourney finds herself on the edge of defeat and ruin. She is homeless, jobless and very sickly. Can she find her powers again and regain a healthy body? This story will take you on a journey that will delight you. Follow Sigourney as she tries to make things right and find happiness. Throw in a genie who delights in causing chaos and you have a fun story. Meet the characters and become familiar with Brimstone Bay, a hotbed of paranormal activity. R. K. Dreaming’s books are fun and entertaining. You will be glad you read her books.
I love this book with it's new take on vampires, magic and mystery. Sigourney is an oracle which is a type if vampire at forty four her powers are wing and she is dying. Before that happens she wants to fond the supernatural serial killer the Reaper who killed her mother, and now seeks to kill her and her daughter.. I am looking forward to the next book in this series

A wonderful start to an enchanting series! I love the characters and how they are being spotlighted in their own series. This one focuses on Sigourney who we got to meet in a previous story from Brimstone Bay. We only got the smallest of peeks at her but now we will get to truly see what she's made of! Fantastic beginning! I can't wait to find out how this progresses! I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This was such a great start to this spin-off series!I love how R. K. Dreaming brings all of her series into the same world so that we get to see characters from other books. It was absolutely fantastic!

An interesting story following oracle Sigourney as she unravels the mystery of the reaper and finds help in the form of a genie, Mr. Charming. The story is humorous and moves at a good pace with some interesting situations. The story is filled with witches, wizards and vampires and makes an interesting story with intriguing mystery and some unexpected twists at the end of the story.

You're the second one to dream of Djinn. Nikki Kardnov did too back in 2019. I love your take on Genies! I feel so sorry for Sigourney! She's not had a good life has she?! I'm rooting for her!
If you haven't guessed I Love genies! And I'm reading the second book now!
A who dun'it kind of tale. An Oracle, fragile in life and yet strong in her desire to accomplish the tasks she's placed upon herself. We wander thru the clues as she stumbles and picks herself up along the way. During that time she learns about friendship & family and the consequences of choice.
I enjoyed this book, I hope Sigourney and Charming get together in the next book. Sigourney was one of the Graces, an Oracle and a woman in a fragile body, where a bump could break her bones. A prisoner, sends a young witch to Sigourney, asking for help. Sigourney is on the hunt for The Reaper, a killer of young women. Good read
