Possibly Texas

Rate this book
When his free-spirited mother decides he’s getting too old for a life on the road with her, sixteen-year-old Jordan Burke is sent back to live with his stepfather in the quirky town of Possibly, Texas. Jordan hasn’t seen his stepfather in several years, and they don’t exactly hit it off immediately. Left to his own devices, he has nothing to do but familiarize himself with his new home. Almost immediately, Jordan begins to wonder why everyone in the town is so weird, if the graveyard is really haunted, if the lady in the tent on the square can really contact the dead, why the radio station, AMOR, only plays one song all day long, if the church is actually a cult, who’s sending the mysterious love letters to Shirlene that are tacked up on the wall inside the post office, and what the boy with Poliosis is building in the barn down by Susurrus Creek. After a while, Jordan begins to wonder if he’ll ever have all of the answers. Regardless, the town is quite possibly the best place to be.

Chase started his writing career as a confused gay teen looking for an escape from reality. Ten years later, one of the books he wrote during those years, Just A Dumb Surfer Dude: A Gay Coming-of-Age Tale, was published independently. Chase has numerous projects in various stages of completion lined up for publishing. Chase is a multi-genre author, but always with a healthy dollop of gay.

This is some kind of modern fairy tale. I don't even know if it counts as magic or urban fantasy. I guess it depends on what your personal perception of magic is. This book is of course magical. You can get lost in it and the (magical?) world of Possibly, Texas and its inhabitants. If you like having a good time, then this book is for you. It's positive, cheerful and uplifting.

I've read about a dozen of Chase's books and nobody develops relationships like Chase ... NO.BO.DY! This book has all the feels and quirkiness I love in a story. Chase always creates "real", can't-help-but-love-them characters ... and did I mention quirky?!? I devoured this delicious entree from the Chase Connor menu! I give it five ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️!

Ok then...

Now this was my fault for not reading the blurb as I should have and not realizing that this was a YA coming of age type story. But once I started reading it, I quite enjoyed it.

This story was about a teen, Jordan, who is literally dumped on the side of the road and told to walk into town and find a stepfather he had not seen in years. His mother was not a good mother and he was mistreated and seriously needed help.

Now my first thought was that this was weird, I mean, this guy is going to let some kid he doesn't know just stay in his house and pay for everything? I also found him to be a bit off.

Then there is the town of Possibly. It's full of unusual people who eventually come to accept Jordan. I wish Levi was a potential love interest, cause he was so sweet. Though if Starbuck becomes his Daddy, that would be ok.

Jordan meets Auggie, who is very different. He has to come to terms with liking a boy, which he does, but only after messing up with Auggie. In a lovely twist, Auggie admits to being non binary, which didn't even make Jordan blink and immediately started using the correct pronouns.

My nitpicky thoughts on this one were the following, this could have been a few hundred pages shorter. Some of what happened went on and on and on. Not every single thing needed to be described. Though the muffins made me crave one.

I also think a longer much deeper conversation between Jack (the stepfather) and Jordan. I mean the kid was literally abandoned by his mother. He needed some sort of help and being a kid, he couldn't get that on his own.

This book is weirdly perfect, or perfectly weird, I don't know but either way, LOVED IT.

The writing style and the world building, both typically Chase, but that's what I love in these stories, the uniqueness. The characters, everyone in this little (BIG) book are awesome and you are just rolling with it and accept it. Everyone weird, or is it you that's the only one weird here? Different then your world, but to them it's everyday and it's normal. And different doesn't mean weird, you just have to live it to understand.

"Possibly was weird. And weird was okay. Weird was perfect.

Especially when everyone was allowed to be weird without judgment. Possibly didn’t have to be perfect. It didn’t have to make sense. I didn’t have to understand the town or every Possibilian to simply sit back and go with the flow. Life should be easy; Possibly was easy."

The fun things, the mystery, the weirdness,  everything was fascinating and held my interest. Couldn't put it down and really enjoyed reading it.

It's not a romance story but it has romantic and cute elements. It's about found family, friendship, acceptance, growing up.

I love Possibly, I'd like to visit ;)

Ps. The Shirlene letters, ahh. And the ghosts! :D :D

Is possibly, Texas one of the best books I’ve read? Possibly, yeah.

Instantly I was drawn to the eccentric characters of the small Texas town and the lead M/C, Jordan. Within the first few pages I could see the town clearly and wanted to live there myself. The author, Chase has an undeniable and outstanding gift for storytelling and setting the scene.
Jordan has just been left by the side of the road by his mum so she can chase another job, leaving Jordan to live with his stepfather who he hasn’t seen in around 10 years. Jordan has never been one to make friends, as he was never in a place long enough to make them. But now is his chance, in this crazy yet quite possibly perfect town.

If you’re looking for a story full of heart, mystery, and friendship, then look no further!

I’m now going to go back and find all the other books this author has written!

The town of Possibly is a strange hamlet enriched by odd ducks and art installations, and a boy trying to find a home and love.

About halfway through I started to think there was more going on than meets the eye. I am happy to say the ending with the cemetery headstone was what I thought was going on. I’m not so happy about many facts in the book making believing that suggestion unlikely. It it was fun nonetheless. See my spoiler.

I was pulling for Jordan and Augy. And for Jack. And basically the whole townsfolk.

There are so many things I love about this book. It gave me all the feels, and I'll try really hard to write a helpful review, but no promises... because POSSIBLY TEXAS is the kind of book that I want to buy in paperback and give a great big squeeze. Maybe that makes sense to readers, maybe not!

Sixteen-year-old Jordan is stuck living an unconventional childhood, traveling the country with his wannabe actress mom, living in motels, never making roots. Until his mom drops him off in Possibly, Texas to stay with his stepfather, whom he has not seen in a decade or so.

To Jordan, Possibly is the weirdest place ever, and he can't wrap his head around any of it. Nothing that happens there is "normal." But then Jordan learns to redefine "normal" and "weird" and, wowzers, what a character arc.

The supporting characters and citizens of Possibly each have something to teach Jordan. From the moment that Auggie makes his whimsical appearance on the page, to Jordan learning how to sign, and Levi Lee with his performance art outside the "Starbuck's" pirate-themed coffee shop, one by one, I fell in love with them all. And I fell in love with Possibly, Texas!

The lazy summer days and the friendship between Jordan and Auggie remind me of Mike and Ian in another one of my favorite books by Chase Connor, A Surplus of Light. The quirky town of Possibly, with its quirky characters and landmarks, reminds me of an edgier Gilmore Girls' Stars Hollow. But the focus on creativity, acceptance, and what's really important in life, is what pulled me into this book and had me smiling through the entire thing.

Is Possibly, Texas heaven? I don't know. But like Jordan, once I stuck around there for awhile, I definitely felt like it could be. This story will stick with me forever.

I was lucky enough to have received an ARC of this book, and as always, I wasn't disappointed by Chase's new book.

Possibly Texas is very charming and fun, and has a whimsical feel to it. You won't regret reading it (as usual)!

I very much liked this book. It's the kind of story where the reader will be providing a good number of the answers. There are strong hints throughout the book that Jordan is no longer among the living and this is confirmed at the stories end. Is Possibly an endpoint or a place of transition? Are the people Jordan meets souls that are on their own journey or are they creations of Jordan? What happened in Jordan's life that led to his quest in Possibly? It could be that the answers are right in front of me but I'm not clever enough to figure it out. I'm OK with that. Even though there remain some mysteries surrounding Jordan and his world, his quest completes with a satisfying romantic conclusion. I really loved the atmosphere and tone of the world created by the author.

super enjoyable story

I found myself a bit confused at first. The story presents some very different ideas. As I read along things made more and sense and it became one of the most enjoyable stories I have read in a long time I am sure if you stick with it you will enjoy this story a great deal. Read and enjoy.

This book is good, but, to me, it was just good.

I guess what ruined the experience for me was that this book seemed to be a mix of two other books that I love: Davo by NR Walker and House by the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune.
I could not stop comparing this book to them, and worst of all, both books seem to have done better jobs than this one.

Disappointing

I didn’t find it clever and so the repetition was annoying. I didn’t find the characters charming, also, just annoying. I’m not sure who the audience for this book it is, but it obviously wasn’t me. I’ve read other work by this author that I enjoyed. This was a let down.

Really enjoyed this unusual blend of mystery, fantasy, and magical realism. When Jordan's mother drops him off at the road that leads to the quirky town of Possibly, Texas, he has no idea of the strange adventure that awaits at the end of a long walk. Reunited with a stepfather he isn't that close to, the teenager is mostly left to his own devices in his explorations of his strange new environment. Every inhabitant of the tiny hamlet he meets seems weirder than the last one and much of the story revolves around the push-pull of rebelling against and accepting his new circumstances. The mystery of the town is expertly revealed and I was totally drawn in to trying to figure out what was going on. The oddball characters are all interesting in their own right and Jordan's plight of trying to figure out how he fits in to it all is very relatable. I've read quite a few books by this author now and found this to be the most maturely written and successful one yet. Thought-provoking and ultimately highly emotional and moving, I highly recommend this one to open-minded readers.

Getting dropped off on the side of the road like an unwanted puppy turns out to be the best thing that ever happened to our narrator. He slowly finds himself and his place in this quirky little town full of eccentric, non-judgmental, characters.

Pretty damned adorable.

I completely fell in love with this story. It has an original and unpredictable storyline full of quirky, engaging, and lovable characters.

This author has been a favorite of mine for quite a while now. He is a master storyteller and has such versatility as a writer. Each of his stories has its own world and characters, but woven throughout them is a recurring message of love, friendship, inspiration, and acceptance.

And I especially felt that message in this story.

“Are you doing art you enjoy?”
“Yeah.”
“Then you’re creating art. You’re living your life on your terms. That’s art.”
“Life is art,” he said, finally.

I know I will never forget the town of Possibly, its characters, and the surprise little twist at the end of the story. I have no doubt I'll still be thinking about this book for many weeks to come.

LIFE IS ART.
