Batman gets the upper hand on the vampires who have infiltrated the Justice League...but the Vampire King finally reveals himself, and it will be the most jaw-dropping moment of 2022! The shocking, bestselling series reaches its blood-drenched halfway point!
Prior to his first professional work, Tynion was a student of Scott Snyder's at Sarah Lawrence College. A few years later, he worked as for Vertigo as Fables editor Shelly Bond's intern. In late 2011, with DC deciding to give Batman (written by Snyder) a back up feature, Tynion was brought in by request of Snyder to script the back ups he had plotted. Tynion would later do the same with the Batman Annual #1, which was also co-plotted by Snyder. Beginning in September 2012, with DC's 0 issue month for the New 52, Tynion will be writing Talon, with art by Guillem March. In early 2013 it was announced that he'd take over writing duties for Red Hood and the Outlaws in April.
Tynion is also currently one of the writers in a rotating team in the weekly Batman Eternal series.
Who's the Master Vampire? I really didn't see it coming the first time around.
This is the kind of shit that makes these Elseworlds stories spin and keep me coming back to the DC universe over and over.
And there were so many OooOoooOooh moments in this one that I'd even forgotten a few. Ollie & Hal's confrontation over Barry? So well done.
This is one of those bananas stories that subverts the expected in fun ways, and for me, this was kind of the perfect end to the first arc. Absolutely batshit & I loved it!
If you haven't read this yet, get off your ass. Highly Recommended.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
As always, a great issue. More deaths, more blood, more reveals. The ending is great to lead us past the halfway point and towards the finale. I don't want this series to end!!
Would have been 5 stars for me if not for two weird spots. How are Hal and Wonder Woman not screaming in excruciating pain, while they’re burning under the UV lights? Also, the Hal and Ollie having a heart to heart scene, while Hal was on fire was beyond ridiculous. Other than that the story and art were top notch.

Holy crap holy crap holy shit. This whole issue had me on the edge of my seat, can’t believe some of the turns they took like Dick being the leader of the vampires and killing Bruce.
I didn’t think they would kill Bruce off nor did I think they would kill Jason off!
Now it’s Ollie, Babs, Cass, Alfred, and Harley. (Idk if Roy and Dinah are still alive, I hope they are) I hope they can beat them

That was a great mid way point but I still can’t stand the changing art styles a right as I was starting to lock into this story to really understand and appreciate it…the rule book was ripped apart. Now one thing I will say, I feel as though I was overly critical of the art style as the end at the end of this issue, when everything really hits the fan, I finally start to appreciate it. It brings a certain elegance and perfection to the vampires that is very becoming of them as they meticulously plan for a gracious slaughter through humanity. But as I said earlier it’s really the first half of this book I enjoy the most, as it finally clicked…even though I hate how we got here I love how this story has boiled down to a standard vampire vs man story. The vampires are always these larger than life mythical creatures with powers beyond human belief or ability to conquer…but then they are always faced by the vampire hunters, who may have a few enhanced human abilities to contend with the vampires but for the most part are what we see in our vigilantes this issue…hunters. As we jump into this issue we find the bat family retreating to the harbor, especially Alfred who made it out of the house way before all his possessions blew up. Nightwing has just shown up as power is being restored across the city…but Barbara is still nowhere to be seen as she is currently fighting alongside the suicide squad to contend with the members who were already vampires before they got here. We finally find out why Waller didn’t blow every vampire up last issue…because she didn’t have radio contact with them after the power outage. Harley immediately informs her that Deadshot and her are fighting to stop the others from eating them…completely neglecting to mention Captain boomerang…who ends up accidentally blown up with the other vampires. But this isn’t the end, their heads will just regrow back if they don’t stake them first. After that is done the suicide squad, what’s left of them, plans to go back to their mission to find joker and it seems they have batgirl alongside them. Except Deadshot then falls through a trap door to find a very dead and drained joker laying on the other side. But that presents a major problem, if joker is dead…then who is the vampire king?
As we check back in on the bat family, Diana and Hal suddenly walk up for a casual conversation…just the two of them for now. I love this moment as these two gods are standing on one side, with a bunch of highly skilled hand to hand combatants and a dude with a bow and arrow stands on the other ready to fight. The vampires once again try and give the same old selling points to get them to switch sides…it doesn’t work and they immediately engage in a fight. But batman planned for this, and as Wonder Woman ties him up in the lasso…the group suddenly enables large lights to immediately start burning Wonder Woman up, giving batman and Cass a chance to reverse the lasso to tie her up. Of course Hal is still filtering the light but as batman explains in battle we all make assumptions. They assumed the lamp would slow him down, and Hal assumes the only people who would fight him would be in masks. Suddenly Alfred comes from behind to slice off Hal’s ring slinging arm with an axe…Hal is down for the count and now he is burning. But I will say it now, the biggest disappointment of this issue is not getting to see his ring choose someone else.
As Diana and Hal burn, Ollie decides to sit over to truly talk to Hal. To try and understand if there is any part of his friend still in there. The vampire sees this as an opportunity to put on a sob story routine to try and convince Ollie to help and free him…but it only confirms to Ollie that all of the memories the two of them shared are still trapped in there and the real Hal could never live with what he did to Barry. So in one final move Ollie finally stabs Hal in the heart to end him for good as Diana calls out in pain and anguish. Ollie begins to walk outside as Batman gets a call from Barbara informing him on the joker situation. All of the evidence led back to joker as their king, but they only wanted them to think that and there are only a few people that could have fooled them…which means the vampire king is one of them!
Batman stays calm and returns to normal, but the time for normal is over as suddenly Nightwing drives his fist through Batman’s chest, revealing himself to be the vampire king this entire time!! No wonder he kept creeping around Barbara, lol. Whelp, go ahead and throw that whole classic vampire hunter vs vampires rule book out the window, the vampire hunter is now the vampire and we are all screwed. Damian immediately runs to his father, begging for him to hold on, as the rest of the bat family try and fight Nightwing only to be taken down one by one to his impressive fighting skills with his insane speed and strength now that he is a vampire. But we all saw him pass the tests, right? How could he do that? Turns out they have been spending so much time with the bat family that the current members of the titans have neglected their other team…Starfire can’t be turned but her blood has fascinating properties that allows them to last for a short period against any vampire weaknesses. Touch a cross, holy water, sunlight, you name it. Dick reveals all of this as he smashes Tim’s head against the ground. Just then Alfred arrives on their escape vehicle…a submarine. Green arrow and red hood quickly load batman on. But Damian makes the choice to go after Dick, only to end up with his blood drained instead. The last bat member standing (here anyway, Barbara is fine) is red hood and he forces Alfred to leave so he can try and face Dick himself. The fight is really impressive as they bounce off each other, Jason revealing after all these years…he was always holding back. And it looked like he was going to win, after successfully pinning Dick against the wall and driving a stake through his shoulder…but then Diana, now free, came from behind to drive her fangs into his neck. They are in need of a new Lt and hope that Jason would join them…but as they pour the vampire blood in his mouth to being the transformation…Jason uses his last words to signal to green arrow to do it…from a great distance Ollie drives an arrow through Jason’s heart to kill him as Alfred and him escape in the sub.
But Damian is still barely alive, and it seems like they are setting up for batman to come back and face taking down his own family quite a bit. But things are not going well, the entire Justice league have been over taken as the war kicks off. The vampires start the war by destroying the seats of power that make societies feel secure, proceeding to destroy the forests and jungles that give so much life. The war has been lost before they even knew it began, as the mystics (Constantine, fate, and swamp thing) and the heroes of metropolis (supergirl and steel) watch in, we see as Dick vows to start the eternal darkness now. Things truly could not be worse.

But how can Superman become a vampire when he gets his powers from the sun and can’t come out during the day? I mean if he were turned he would just be a vampire wearing Superman’s costume.😹
The vampires are coming out in full mass and the hero’s can’t stop them. I love a good surprise twist but this one was pushing it. Harley and batgirl definitely saved this issue for me but I can see people being annoyed with the art change. I don’t mind it but they are so different it’s hard to not notice. I really don’t know where this story is gonna go, and usually I don’t mind that but this pulls things out of a hat at I’m tired of rolling my eyes at it.
Wow - did not see this coming. Don't want to give away what happens here - but things are going to hit rock bottom. Batman (B) leads a team against Wonder Woman (WW) and Green Lantern (GL). As vampires GL and WW have the upper hand; they know their opponents well - but have no mercy for their now former friends. There is a shocking revelation in this issue - and a sacrifice that will change everything.
First of all, look at that cover, is it not perfection? That's such a good cover! And this issue, oh my god, this issue. Yes. Like, this explains SO much. I'm not going to say I saw it coming, because I didn't, but I'm also not surprised, because looking back there was enough foreshadowing and I love that. This series is great.
The Vampire King has emerged. Ollie has difficult choices to make. Diana gets to show off the true strength of her newfound abilities. The BatFam is really put to task, and Alfred pulls through as always.
Do I LIKE seeing Dickie kill his family as he taunts them for being literally no challenge for him? Not really, but also kinda! I DO love that line of "I wanted at least one of my brothers to join me" like oh my gooddddd me too boy

3.5 stars. The inconsistent art is annoying. I love the slick visuals with Babs and Harley (cool team up, too), but the rest is often too blocky to enjoy. There's good story progression and twists, especially with the vampire king. Dude. I think I just changed sides. ;)
Up to now, I've felt this mini-series has been a mixed bag that's spun its wheels. This issue delivers big as it delivers touching character moments, exceptional revelations, and shows the Vampire King in all his vicious glory. An exceptional issue which ripped my heart out.
This story is goofy and weird as hell, MAN this was a fantastic issue!! I love how progressively insane this story has gotten up until this point. I am massively bias towards this issue in particular because nightwing is my favourite character and I LOVE seeing him as a villain, that was so cool man!! Hilarious, great action, fantastic reveal, overall just a super wild ride so far
Edit: I’m changing my 4 to a 5 because I can’t stop thinking about that one panel god damn 💅🏻💅🏻
