When a serial killer rocks a small town in Oregon, a young woman with special powers might be the only person able to stop him. As part of a secret branch of the FBI, Tessa is sent on a mission to impersonate Madison, a local teen and the last victim of the brutal attacker, to find the killer before he strikes again.

As if absorbing the DNA of someone else and pretending to be them wasn’t hard enough, Alec, the guy she’s been in love with for years, is joining her on the dangerous mission. Tessa knows she can’t let her feelings for him get in the way, especially as her crush seems hopeless. Not only is Alec her self-defence teacher but he's also taken. If only the attraction between them would stop complicating everything!

Will Tessa find the killer before another person falls victim to him? Or will she lose herself in a life she’s always longed for but never had?

This book is actually a rewrite of Impostor, a YA book published in 2013 by Susanne Winnacker (one of the many author names of Cora Reilly, one could argue Susanne is the original one). This book is New Adult though. Thanks to my local library I was able to compare both Deceitful and Impostor and can confirm that while the story at its core remains mostly the same, some scenes were rewritten, others are entirely new that are not in the original version, there are more sexy times (not super spicy but definitely not YA).

I found out about this by accident and I felt a bit cheated as this was not said anywhere by the author, sorry if it was supposed to be a secret. When I first found out I thought wow Cora stole this book from this chick Susanne, but fear not, they are actually the same person. At first, I was like, Cora, the writer of mafia romance is trying her hand at paranormal romance I must read this! alas, it turns out she wrote this book way before all her mafia and Cora Reilly books.

Ohhh I have a lot of thoughts. Despite being a New Adult rewrite the writing style remained juvenile a lot. It reminded me of a lot of YA books from around that time, namely The Host and Divergent.

It was also giving me serious Shatter Me and X-Men vibes right from the start. It isn't dystopian, we find ourselves in present times. It turns out there is a branch of the FBI, the F.E.A that is the Forces with Extraordinary Abilities, for agents with special abilities, called Variants. Each Variant has a different Variation, which is what they call their power, some are double Variants, which means they have two powers one physical power and one mental power. Our protagonist Tessa is a shapeshifter Variant.

She is training to become an agent in the field and is assigned her first real mission, a serial killer is on the loose in a small town in Oregon, and his last victim Madison Chambers managed to survive the attack. She is brain-dead though and not expected to live for long. Tessa is supposed to use her Variation and take the form and life of Madison. She's basically bait in hopes that the killer would want to come out and finish the job.

There is a love triangle in this book. Tessa our 18-year-old heroine has a hopeless crush on Alec, our 24-year-old hero since she met him at just 15. He has been single until he returns from a mission with Kate, a fellow agent and now his girlfriend. Alec seems to reciprocate Tessa's feelings at times, acting protectively towards her, sharing looks here and there, they almost kiss a few times, etc. Alec thinks he is too old for Tessa being 6 years her senior and also a teacher/mentor. He has a bit of a hot n' cold attitude over the whole thing which naturally confuses Tessa.

Tessa knows lusting after Alec is wrong because he has a girlfriend, but she says she can't help it and she was in Alec's life way before Kate. Kate and Tessa do not get along at all because they are both jealous of each other. It doesn't help that Kate's Variation is being able to read your mind if she looks into your eyes, it only works with females so Alec's thoughts are safe around Kate but Tessa's are not.

Then we have Tessa on the field where she has to take Madison's physical appearance and her life, no one from Madison's life knows [not even her parents] she is dead and everyone believes she made a miraculous recovery. Did I mention Madison used to have a boyfriend? Well, she did and Madison had her own complicated love life that now Tessa must navigate. Nothing happens with them though as it is entirely one-sided.

This book had me on the edge of my seat. I really wanted to know who the killer was. And best of all the journey to the revelation wasn't boring or frustrating as is the case with some mystery books, where the mystery becomes frustrating rather than enticing. There was romance but there was also the case to be solved, it isn't entirely focused on romance. I think neither was overshadowed, and both kept it interesting.

This is safety information so may be a bit spoilery: One thing I didn't like was the fact that despite having a girlfriend Alec was flirty with Tessa. One time Tessa used her power to take Kate's appearance to trick Alec into kissing him, that pissed me off, thankfully nothing happened because Alec noticed something was off and Tessa lost a grip on her power and revealed herself. Alec and Tessa kissed a couple of times while Alec and Kate were on a break and Alec and Tessa were on mission but Tessa didn't know they were on a break. She should've known better. After this, they don't kiss anymore and decide to focus on work, after the mission is over Alec breaks up with Kate and starts to formally date Tessa. As an interesting fact this part occurs also in the YA version but in a different order of events and a scene was added to it that wasn't in the YA book.

I have a feeling Devon might end up being a future romantic interest.

Extra stuff I didn't know where else to put: This will only make sense if you are familiar with the Shadowhunters books. It didn't escape me that the protagonist Tessa is a shapeshifter, her romantic interest has black hair (major Will vibes), his name is Alec and there are brothers named Tanner and Ty. So I naturally thought about Shadowhunters a lot while reading this book.

I think CR better stick to her mafia or dark romance stories.
In Deceitful she had a decent and semi-original idea but the whole book gives the impression of it's author's debut novel and not a book an established or experienced author would publish. Weak and unimpressive plot, characters, dialogues, world building etc.
I won't be bothering with the next book as much as my OCD wants me to read everything a favorite author writes or give a chance to the second book of a series that hasn't impressed me with the first one. It might have payed off in the past, but I wanted to DNF this book so badly almost from the start that I won't subject myself to this torture again.

Deceitful was my first Reilly read (as either C. Reilly or Cora Reilly) and it is one that left me conflicted. It took me quite a while to get into the story, but once I did, I finished it in no time. At the same time, while curious to see how it came together, I never completely fell for it.

I think this is one of those stories where there were a lot of interesting elements involved, yet none of them were quite taken to the extent I had hoped. When it comes to the supernatural, it is clear those elements will play out more in the future books, and I understand that. I do wish there had been more to the other elements, though. The romance, for example, made little sense to me. It felt like a crush without any substance. The mystery element was interesting, but there were not enough surprising details, and everything was rather obvious. That is not to say it was a bad book, simply that I wanted more.

For a start of a series, this offers a lot of potential. I just wish there had been more depth to it.

Deceitful is written under the pen name of C. Reilly better known as Cora Reilly and is a complete departure from her usual dark mafia romances. Tessa is a member of a secret agency within the FBI that is made up of variants – people with special abilities. Her talent is that she can absorb a person’s DNA and instantly morph into them. When a series of murders rocks a small town in Oregon, Tessa goes undercover using her talent in the field for the first time taking the physique of the last victim, Madison, in the hope of luring out the assailant before any more lives are lost. Adding to her troubles is the fact that her partner on the mission is her trainer, a man she’s been in love with since she met him.

For me Deceitful gives off definite Twin Peaks/X-men vibes. It’s a slow burn fantasy/paranormal romance murder mystery with elements of slight age gap and student/teacher scenarios – well Alex is technically Tessa’s teacher. It has fantastic world building and gripping intrigue and suspense, building up the tension until a dramatic showdown with the killer setting the scene for more in this series. All while searching for the killer who could be anyone, Tessa is going through the usual typical, teenage angst and trying to cope with the novelty of being a high school student as well as having the family of her dreams within reach – just a pity none of it is real.

This was a fantastic start to the Rules of Deception series and I can’t wait to read more from this world. I have so many questions about Tessa and her background that I’m hoping will be answered in any future books.

WOW.....

When I first read the blurb..... I wasn't sure.....
However... I couldn't not but give it a read, as I've read practically everything Cora Reilly has written.....
And once I'd started reading this book... I couldn't put it down..... so I was definitely not disappointed, thank you Cora, for another fantastic book.....
Now I really need to get a start on RODB2.....

Looking back at what I read for 2022, I noticed my critical 2 star review for Deceitful was gone. Also it was now marked unrated.

I wrote a very long review pointing out its terrible romance and plot flaws. Calling it swiss cheese with all of its holes.

My review also stated I'm an old Reilly fan. I was tempted to rate this 3 stars for Devon's sake. Like all of her more recent books the OW/OM side character romances have far greater appeal, to the main story.

How many other reviews were deleted I wonder.

4.5 stars!

I have to be honest and start by saying that this is the first book that I’ve read from this author! I’m not sure why because I’ve had some of her books on my Kindle for a while now! What attracted me to this book is that it’s a supernatural romantic suspense, which is one of my favourite genres to read! After reading, I can say that I flew through this book in a few sittings! The plot was intriguing and it kept me wanting to read on and find out who the killer was and what their reasons were! I wasn't really surprised by who the killer was, but it could have been a number of people, and this person was on my list lol! There was some action and suspense in the plot, which added to it and made me enjoy it more! There was plenty of romance too, but the romance was kind of complicated! It did allow for a lot of sexual tension! The characters were also amazing and made this book even better! Tessa was the main character, and in this book she had to use her power to help catch a serial killer! I liked Tessa a lot and she was committed to her mission and wanted to focus all her energy on it! Tessa discovered a lot in this book and she learned about the bad side of the supernatural world she was apart of! Alec was the love interest of Tessa! It was easy to see that Alec had feelings for Tessa, but he was also in a relationship, so it was hard for me to understand why he was in a relationship he didn’t really want to be in when he liked Tessa! Alec did support Tessa and he tried his best to always be there for her! He was protective of Tessa as well and wanted her to be as safe as she could be on their mission! This book was only written from Tessa’s point of view! I wasn’t sure it if was going to be written this way before I started reading or if it was going to have multiple point of views in it! I enjoyed it only being told through Tessa’s eyes and it made sense for it to be written this way because it meant that any of the other characters could have been the serial killer! It allowed me to find things out at the same time as Tessa as well, so there were more big reveals! I now can't wait to read the next book in this series! It says that it releases in May, which isn't that long of a wait! The ending of this book was also left at an open ending that allows for a lot to happen! I loved that it wasn't a big cliffhanger, because then I would have been even more desperate for the next book and I'm desperate enough for it as it is lol! The cover for this book is also stunning and I love it a lot! I love how well it suits the book and what happens in it! It attracted me to the book as well and made me want to check out the synopsis!

Deceitful is the first book in the trilogy in the Rules of Deception by C. Reilly. I just love that Cora is venturing out from her norm and trying out new things. I am definitely for it. To be honest, I have been on a boom slump or more importantly just slump altogether because of morning sickness, but I enjoyed this book. It was different for my normal reads as well. This was a mystery with supernatural spin to it with a little romance and some multi-layered characters that was lovable. Tessa has the super ability to turn into another individual and is now assigned to work a case of a serial killer case to catch the killer as her first assignment. This was an emotional case so she is not sure how well she can handle it. The mystery and suspense is definitely the best part of this book. Super happy to be a part of this journey, Cora! This was such a good read. I received a free copy of this book via C. Reilly and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Wow wow wow! This book really blew my mind, I finished it in one night. I am used to Cora's writing of the mafia world and this was something totally different. More mysterious that I was glued to the pages. Ive read reviews and I was surprised by it as many were expecting more romance and spicy scenes. To be fair, I expected a spicy scene at least but this was really vanilla kissing and one touch moment only. However, I am not complaining that it was lacking because the story itself was really captivating and the romance between the main leads were at the good extend of how the story line was built. This book really really impressed me that Cora wrote this! mindblowing.

2.5*. Having read Reilly's mafia series moving this up my reading list was a no brainer. Unfortunately I'm not sure how I feel about it. Interesting premise loosely based on Xmen but still engaging. The romance was low key but overall the tone of the book left me feeling flat. No giddy upbeat feeling but almost a feeling of dread. There's a HFN and the potential om story is also one I'm hoping won't materialise in the series but too many crumbs in this one to be ignored. So 2.5*

don’t waste your time

I’ve been reading Cora’s books for years, I love all her mafia books with exception of Adamos book and the awful by sin I rise. I can’t even describe what I read here, finished the first few chapters then skipped to the end, not for me , won’t bother with the rest of the series …

Wow

Everyone of use is different in some ways, known and unknown. We all have gifts that manifest themselves in some way. This story could be true today. Genetics......Tessa, Alec, Devon, Kate, Phil and Ryan. The deal is it is not who we are, our gifts, our differences etc....It will always be how we use them....Good and Evil......you are what you choose to become.

¿No debería, acaso, saber pelear siquiera?
No sé qué pensar.

I was so excited to read this book from Cora because her last mafia books disappointed me a little bit and I thought this new genre will make me fall in love with her writing again and I wasn't wrong.
The book follows Tessa and her mission to find and stop a serial killer with the help of her teacher Alec.
Tessa has the ability to shape shifting and because of her variant she is the choosen one to find the serial killer by shape shifting into Madison (the last victim). She is a strong character with a sad background and she tries and wants to be happy and have, in a future, the family she didn't have in her childhood. I loved her personality and her relationships with Devon, Holly and Alec.
Alec is a strong character but also kind of enigmatic but cute, funny and so easygoing when he is with Tessa. I really liked his friendship with Tess and loved him as a love interest and can't wait to know more about him.
The story has a lot of mistery because you don't know who the killer is until the last few pages and it has a lot of twists that I have never imagined could happen.
Now I have to say I need more Devon, he is amazing, I really liked him as Madison's brother and I hope in the future he could be like a brother to Tess because they both deserve it.
I really liked this new world where the FBI has a secret branch called FEA where all its agents have powers (variants) and I'm so excited for future books and the follow up of the story with Abel's Army.

This is the first book in this series by this author. It's a fantasy x paranormal romance, and is book #1 in the Rules of Deception series.

Tessa is a member of a secret agency within the FBI that is made up of variants, Tessa can absorb your DNA and become you. She has been through so much but she wants to make a difference so when someone starts murdering people in a little town a small town Tessa goes undercover and becomes someone else. But she is taking a partner who is the man shes been in love with for so long.

I really enjoyed reading this book and I was hooked right from the of and I couldn't put it down. It's full of mystery and suspense and twists that will keep the reader hooked and up all night reading this world.
I loved the story line I thought it was a fantastic start to the Rules of Deception series and I can’t wait to read the second book this series will keep you on the edge of your seat and this book is a MUST READ

Cora, girl please, I am trying lol.

- Tessa was just not an interesting or very likable character, her actions and reactions are really off, they serve the plot instead of driving any character growth
- Kate and Alec's relationship is never explained
- The side characters have no personalities
- The attraction to Devon was so creepy
- Alec and Tessa didn't even have chemistry and it was borderline cheating
- Jake (I think that's his name?) had no real motivation, since when does cutting ties to your past mean killing your paediatrician lmao
- Tessa's powers just worked or didn't work whenever the plot required
