Orrick MacLeod is a famed Highland warrior from a powerful clan who can no longer fight. Painful memories from battles plague him when he raises his sword, and he fears that one day he’ll hesitate and he, or one of his brothers, will perish. Leaving his castle to thwart his battle hero destiny, he stumbles across a young woman. Rumors whisper she’s born of fairies, but Orrick only sees a beautiful woman in jeopardy.
Isolde Nicolson is a devoted daughter of her clan, but when she rejected her chieftain brother’s choice of a cruel husband by striking her brother with an arrow, she’s banished. The kindly Orrick shelters her in the safety of the MacLeod castle where they soon unlock hidden desires. Orrick wishes to ask for her hand in marriage, but when he tries to do what’s right, everything goes wrong.
As an incident threatens to tear the MacLeod family apart, a pivotal and bloody battle between English and Scottish forces ensues. Soon the warrior who can no longer fight must stand to protect everything he holds dear.

Blending just a hint of fairy magic with its historical aspects, To Win A Highlander’s Heart is the third story in Gerri Russell’s Guardians of the Isles series. It’s an entertaining story in its own right but works much better if read after the first two books. I love the setting in and around Dunvegan Castle, seat of Clan Macleod, on the Isle of Skye. The characters in this story are very much it’s driving force. Isolde and Orrick are both strong mentally and physically though each of them carries internal wounds that heal as the story progresses. With a particularly nasty Englishman baying for Isolde’s blood, there is plenty to keep you turning the pages. It’s been an entertaining read and a nice continuation to this series.

This story unfolds as the thousand years old Aria who was stolen from Dunvegan castle and the human world by the fairy King eons ago. As Aria was half human and half fairy and has never been accepted in the fairyworld due to prejudice against her human blood. Furthermore she wanted to meet her MacLeod family, but does it in a way that nearly destroys them all! The Guardian of the Isles continues in installment three….
Isle of Skye 12 September 1741 Dunvegan
This story begins with a large amount of sibling jealousy, plus many Nicolson warriors felt a woman with a weapon to defend herself, clan and country was very unnatural and disgusting! Even though Isolde Nicolson was definitely their strongest warrior! An honor that only should bestowed on men, at least that is what the new Laird John Nicholson and most of his warriors thought. Even though John and Isolde’s Nicholson’s father the former Laird had been training his daughter to be a warrior since she was six years. Due to her gifted ability she was the best Nicolson warrior which her father knew and was proud of his lass, promising her a place as a warrior in his army. As she was the strongest warrior, but tragically he and her mother were drowned at sea while traveling now her brother John was Laird. He made sure she would never be a warrior as he and the other men were always calling her names and criticizing her warrior abilities. Now he was forcing her into an unwanted marriage, but allowed her to a competition against her would be husband Ewen MacPhee. Except this dishonorable scoundrel pushed her and made her hit her brother and pregnant sister-in-law. Now her brother was Laird and his word was law and she was immediately exiled from her clan with only the clothes on her back.
Unfortunately this is how she first meets the villainous English Lieutenant Collins who captures her and forces her to spy or he will make up charges against her brother and charge him as a traitor which would have him arrested and most likely executed. So she didn’t have a choice eventually she escaped the English and their games of espionage as she would never go against her countrymen. However Isolde finds a cave to hide and lives off the land for over a year as she lives in solitude. Therefore, even her clothes deteriorated through time so she made clothes from animal pelts and the natural elements that surround her as she became a wild wilderness woman. So meeting Orrick MacLeod was the first human she saw or even spoke to in over a year. A man she hadn’t seen since she was twelve years old, what Isolde does not realize is her life is about to change forever!
Another nearby village was raided by the MacQueen clan and an adopted child named Emlyn was missing. The parents didn’t even report her missing until many many hours later as if she did not matter. This disgusted Orrick, who had been home for over six months, but still couldn’t pick up a weapon. After his father got a serious head wound from a previous battle he became a brutal, cruel wicked monster, who murdered his own mother! So he and his triplet brothers Alastair who is the oldest and now Laird, plus his other brother Tormad went to the West Indies to fight as paid mercenaries. Orrick lived with so much guilt and regrets, seeing the faces of the innocent men dead men he killed in his head. He couldn’t move on, but he wanted to succeed in rescuing an innocent lost child. This is where he first meets Isolde except he never saw a woman appear like this, it turns out they hear the child’s cries as a badger is holding the child captive with her leg by its sharp teeth. Again Orrick couldn’t lift a weapon where Isolde got attacked by the badger but did free Emlyn from the badger. Isolde was definitely Emlyn’s heroine now as she rescued the young orphan and the badger finally took off releasing Emlyn but also bit Isolde. Orrick convinces Isolde to get care from his healer at Dunvegen Castle his home.
Orrick’s family isn’t thrilled to see Isolde Nicolson,¿ as they recognize her immediately and are afraid the Nicolson clan won’t remain an ally. Even their ghost of a mother Janet MacLeod is afraid this woman will cause this family great harm, as she always wants to protect her children. She still does not understand why she hasn’t moved on in death, but feels she must protect her children at all costs as long as she is able. Furthermore, Laird Alastair can smell the battle of Culloden coming all being Jacobite supporters. Of course feelings so. change when the English are trying to force the MacLeod’s hand on getting their support for their English King which will never happen! So the English try a set the MacLeod up that will put the women in a horrible situation where lives might be at risk, but Isolde puts her life on the line! Now Isolde knows the English will terrorize the MacLeod’s to get to her anyway possible! The enormous problem is that she is madly in love with Orrick MacLeod, a man that is definitely her soul mate and Orrick is also madly in love with Isolde and refuses to accept her escape to keep them all safe! Yet Isolde will not risk anyone else’s life, but this time isolation will be horrific as she has gotten to know and love so many MacLeods a true friendship with Gwendolyn, Fiona, even Rowena and Orrick’s brothers Alastair! Tormad, Calum and even warrior Graeme, and their ghost of a mother Janet MacLeod and she adores Emlyn like a daughter. She is filled with sadness and regret, plus was hoping she and her brother and her sister-in-law Sarah could reconcile and she could have a relationship with her niece Brea and visit the Nicolson’s Scorrybreac castle. She still felt she being watched while she was here too. What will Isolde and Orrick do as she has truly won this highlanders heart and has changed his way of thinking about everything! Will Orrick and Isolde reunite or be separated forever? Read and find out!
This is the third book in Guardians of the Isles Series which is extraordinary from start to finish. Every woman with a warriors tender heart will absolutely love this fabulous story as Gerri Russell definitely knows how to draw her readers in! It is such a unique story filled with true history, as the Isle of Skye is real as is Dunvegan castle and the magical fairy flag! Yes the MacLeod clan is very real too. Of course I love the magical, paranormal part of this book and of course the fictional love story of Isolde and Orrick and all the obstacles they must cross. I loved that their roles were reversed with she being the strong warrior and he being filled with so much regret and guilt from his life as a mercenary. It really is an incredible book which I can’t recommend enough. Gerri Russell has been my go to author since her first debut book and I have been hooked ever since. I can’t wait for Rowena’s story in “To Claim His Highland Bride” next in this spectacular series
Guardians of the Isles Series Return of the Heir Only a Highlander Will Do To Win a Highlander’s Heart

To Win a Highlander’s Heart, book three in the Guardians of the Isles series is packed with nonstop action! This book focuses on the third of the MacLeod brothers, Orrick and introduces Isolde Nicolson who will become his partner. Both Orrick and Isolde work to overcome their pasts and build future together. Let’s unpack this just a bit, not too much as to give away story but enough to spark interest in this fantastic read! Isolde is a warrior with skills far superior to her brother she would be of benefit to any clan. Threatened by her skill what does her brother do but banish her from his lands. In the year she spends away from her clan Isolde gains incredible strength and hones her skill as not only an archer but a swords woman as well. Orrick, the third MacLeod brother is the contemplative strategist of the three warriors. His time spent in the West Indies drove him to abhor war, killing and anything related. Upon his arrival home Orrick is unsure he will ever be able to battle again, even to protect his clan. A chance encounter in the wilds of Scotland introduces the pair and the story heats up from there. Dunvegan Castle, home of the MacLeod brothers holds many secrets. This book introduces new family members to the story that are important setting up beautifully for next books in the series. Aria MacLeod is one of the unknown and missing family members brought to life in this book. Aria hails from the fairy realm and at first presents as a bit mischievous, not sure if she’ll be a help or hinderance to the clan. As the story unfolds, she not only choses to support her clan but also shares with them their brother Keiran is alive and well, living in Fairyland. In this series Russell introduces exciting new elements of folklore, fairy magic, and ghosts adding magical components that make these works a treasure. These elements in addition to warriors of the Highlands, great characters and research produce amazing stories. The books can be read as stand-alone, yet I always like to read each book in sequential order to get the most out of the development of relationships. This is but a sample of the nonstop action and adventure in this lively book. Truly a great read! I highly recommend the book and anxiously await the next stories in the series.
The book’s teaser stated “Orrick MacLeod is a famed Highland warrior from a powerful clan who can no longer fight. Isolde Nicolson is a devoted daughter of her clan, but when she rejected her chieftain brother’s choice of a cruel husband by striking her brother with an arrow, she’s banished.”
My first reaction on reading the first few pages was “Oh no, fairies”? However there is a historical truth about the Macleod’s Fairy flag - a mythical yellow and brown silk flag, slightly deteriorated that is held in Dunvegan Castle. The flag is known for its magical properties, some traditions relate that if the flag were to be unfurled and waved more than three times, it would either vanish, or lose its powers forever.
The book starts with the Fairy story and then the intrigue starts. I couldn’t put the book down. The Scottish landscape and atmosphere of the Jacobean era set the scene. The characters are believable and the author manages to get the reader to share in their fears and emotions.
The story involved some action, feminine tenacity, courage and a little romance. I enjoyed reading this and recommend it. I was given an advance copy from BookFunnel and leave this honest review voluntarily.
To Win a Highlander's Heart is an outstanding story with the magnificent Isolde Nicolson who outshines all of the Highlander men. Being the third book in the Guardians of the Isles Series by Gerri Russell this has all of the characters together from the first two books.
Isolde Nicolson is the perfect heroine, intelligent, self-reliant, loyal, brave, and compassionate. I like her just as she is. She is such a help to Orrick MacLeod with his PTSD struggles. Though they didn’t know to call it that in the 1700’s, it still existed. There is also another new character who won my heart to as she looked for family and acceptance. The men are wonderful in this series but it is the women who made you shout, “You go, girl!” as you read.
My favorite series by this author I recommend the entire series including To Win a Highlander's Heart. Don’t let the cover fool you Isolde is a warrior, more comfortable in clothes suited for fighting than a frilly dress.
An ARC of the book was given to me by Tule Publishing which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Isolde is banished from her clan's lands when she injures her sister-in-law and brother. She lives in the wilderness until she is injured saving Orrick and his men. He takes her back to his clan's lands where she is not welcomed by all. She heals. She is a warrior so when the men leave the castle and the English attack, she fights the English off. When the truth comes out, Orrick and his clan accept her. When she returns to her brother's lands, she is kidnapped by the English. Will Orrick be able to rescue her? Will her clan accept her? Will her brother?
I enjoyed this story. I liked how the clans are depicted and how they must fight the English as well as other clans. It was interesting to see how the clans negotiated with each other. I liked how Isolde learned so much on her own so she was able to help her niece. While I was no fan of her brother, he does learn to accept and appreciate Isolde. I loved how Isolde and Orrick are able to strengthen each other. Because of Isolde's faith in Orrick, he is able to become the warrior he was meant to be.
I look forward to reading more of this series and this author.
Another great story in this series. Each one is about the love and feelings of this Scottish clan- the MacLeod's. These brothers share a strong family with lots of feelings and beliefs. Great to see them all back and staying true to their family. Isolde Nicolson is having issues with her clan as her father taught her to fight like a warrior. On his death, her brother becomes the new Laird of the clan. He wants to match her up with a man, that she felt wasn't a man of honor. So during a competition , she is pushed and an accident occurs. She now is banished. She lives alone in a cave for a year before she meets Orrick MacLeod . He takes her back to the castle, where our old friends are from earlier books. Most come to care for her while she tries to help Orrick with his PTSD. Everyone helps her to stay and become one of them. Has lots of action, emotions, drama, intrigue, magic, a special ghost and a surprise. Would strongly recommend to everyone plus the rest of the series.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
As always this third book gives action, danger, magic, folklore and an epic love journey. I loved that Isolde is a strong independent resilient warrior. Orrick’s struggles brought heartache. Threats from enemies showed how Isolde and Orrick were stronger together. Love this series!

The connection and love between Orrick and Isolde is powerful, drawing the reader into their relationship. The adventure is riveting and has you gasping, cheering, and trying to draw your own sword. This is one of the best in a wonderful series!.

This third book in the Gaurdians of the Isles series is a well written Scottish historical romance with a touch of fairly magic. The characters were interesting, strong warriors at heart, and their connection and love were powerful. I enjoyed this entertaining story full of action and adventure. I highly recommend reading!
Orrick MacLeod is know for his ability to fight. Now he suffers from PTSD from previous battles and the men he has killed. He no longer takes part in the battles for fear of putting his men in danger. When he stays behind he stubbles upon Isolde living in the wild. She is ready to fight him. He brings her back to his castle to protect her. Isolde is cast from her clan when she refuses to marry the husband picked for her. He is a brutal man but can financially help her clan. Eventually Orrick finds out that he has meet Isolde years before. The more time he spends with her and watches her interact with his family and when she comes to the aid of her brother who abandon her, he can't help but fall in love with her. He intends to ask for her hand just before everything falls apart. Are they strong enough to endure what stands in the way of their future? Good read.
To Win a Highlander's Heart, Guardians of the Isles, Book 3 by Gerri Russell 1742 Story starts out with Aria recalls the past and she came to be in the human world but she lives in the fairy world also. Love hearing of the myths and legends of the fairies, treasured flag and portals. Story also follows Isolde, she just wants to be a warrior and has trained for years. She had been banished from the family castle when her aim at the target was wrong due to her opponent jarring her. She keeps herself safe and learns new healing methods by watching nature. She also had to spy on them as the English had captured her.. Upon her escape she is met by Orrick and he protects her and she helps to fight the intruders at his castle. Love how it all ends despite all the battles and turmoil. With them all working together they can get their boy back also. Love secret places and just how they are able to survive. Author's note on writing this series is included at the end. About the author is also included. Adult situations. Received this review copy from the author and this is my honest opinion.
