Hunting Discomfort: How to Get Breakthrough Results in Life and Business No Matter What

Rate this book
Entrepreneur, motivational leader, and internationally recognized public speaker Sterling Hawkins shows readers how to get comfortable with discomfort to create breakthrough results in life and business using his #NoMatterWhat system for transformative change.

Entrepreneur Sterling Hawkins has spent his life coming back from the brink to sell companies, finish ultramarathons, and achieve results no matter what it took. After years of teaching innovation techniques to Fortune 500 companies, his seven-figure business collapsed with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March of 2020. He then began a journey to research, study, and test ideas to find the answer to this question: How do some people create transformative results in even the harshest circumstances? Hunting Discomfort challenges the status quo and unpacks an uncomfortable human truth that’s so obvious it’s consistently overlooked and ignored: It’s exactly because of difficult circumstances that breakthrough results are possible. Using his proven #NoMatterWhat system along with moving personal stories, case studies of high achievers, and hands-on exercises, the author teaches readers how to accomplish breakthrough results regardless of obstacles standing in their way.

"I was left questioning if I could go on or if I even wanted to."

I was stage manager at a conference where Sterling spoke last fall and he was such a kind human. I snagged a signed copy of his book when the show was over. He's funny AND he looks like Brandon Sklenar so yes I enjoyed this...

Hunting Discomfort is an inspiring and practical guide that challenges one of our strongest natural instincts the desire to avoid discomfort. Sterling Hawkins makes a compelling case that meaningful growth, innovation, and breakthrough results are found not by seeking certainty, but by intentionally embracing the challenges that most people avoid.

What makes this book especially engaging is Hawkins' willingness to draw from his own setbacks as well as his successes. His honest account of rebuilding after the collapse of his business during the pandemic adds authenticity to the lessons he shares, demonstrating that resilience is developed through experience rather than theory. The #NoMatterWhat system provides readers with actionable strategies that can be applied in both personal and professional life.

Rather than offering motivational slogans, the book combines real-world stories, practical exercises, and a mindset framework that encourages readers to rethink how they approach obstacles and uncertainty. Entrepreneurs, business leaders, professionals, and anyone pursuing ambitious goals will find valuable insights that translate into meaningful action.

Hunting Discomfort is a timely reminder that the greatest opportunities often lie just beyond our comfort zones, making it a valuable resource for anyone committed to lasting personal and professional growth

A very interesting book to read. Its more or less the long version of the proverb "The magic happens outside your comfort zone". The author introduces good concepts to deal with the discomfort and how to face it #NoMatterWhat. Every chapter has a summary with the key takeaways at the end too. Highly recommended reading.

Good book on the concept of challenging yourself. Especially liked the intro. Then it became a bit trivial.

In Hunting Discomfort, Sterling Hawkins challenges the way many of us naturally approach life. Most of us try to avoid discomfort whenever we can, but this book flips that idea on its head and argues that real growth often happens when we intentionally step toward it instead.

The idea to “hunt” discomfort, to proactively seek challenges and uncomfortable situations, sounds intimidating at first. However, the more we practice engaging with discomfort, the stronger we become at handling it. Like a muscle, our ability to face hard things grows with use.

Hawkins also tackles the roles of fear and self-doubt in our lives. A small amount of self-doubt can actually be healthy—it can push us to grow and build confidence. But if we allow it to take over, it slowly shrinks our world while limiting what we believe we’re capable of.

The book also challenges the assumptions we make about our goals. Sometimes we tell ourselves the reason we haven’t reached them is a lack of time, money, or opportunity. But often the real barrier is the way we’ve limited our own thinking. When we’re willing to question those assumptions and remain open to different paths, new possibilities start to appear.

In the end, one of the biggest takeaways for me was that doing hard things expands your perspective. When you push beyond your comfort zone, you begin to see what you're actually capable of—and the world starts to look a little different.

This book was a good reminder that sometimes the very thing we’re trying to avoid is the place where growth is waiting for us.
