The bride was pretending…

To help her sister out of a tricky situation Laura Madison had agreed to step into her shoes to view the house her fiancé's uncle had bought as a wedding gift. It should have been easy. But Uncle James had ideas of his own….

This started out intriguing, but then it fell flat. The whole deception the h, Laura and her sister, Bea play on the H, James (reluctantly on Laura's part) was a bit on the silly side, and didn't last too long, and from there, the story seemed to be about James and his trust issues with women (after a crummy marriage, where his former wife baby trapped him, and later cheated on him), and Laura finally feeling free after years of responsibility and self-sacrifice, and the intense attraction they have for each other (which Laura knows is love, but James isn't ready to admit yet).

Of course, you know something has to go wrong, and you're led to think it'll have to do with the OW, Sue (estranged from her husband and rebounding to James), but instead things take an unexpected turn!

It's usually the h who is TSTL, and believes whatever nonsense the OW says, then disappears, and doesn't see the H for several years. This time - despite his intelligence and sophistication - it's the H who's TSTL!! One phone call from the OM, Ray (a coworker of Laura's, who should win the Pompous Ass of the Year award) has James convinced that innocent Laura (who lost her virginity to him) was a conniving two-timer, another cheater like his ex, who betrayed her "fiancé", Ray by sleeping with him! (Ray couldn't accept that Laura would really turn down his proposal, not a great catch like him! BARF!! BARF!!) Without bothering to tell her that Ray called, James tells Laura he's decided that what they had together was just a fling after all and tells her to get lost! Unbelievable!!! Just like the dumb h's in other books, he never tells her what it's all about, just leaves her hurt and bitter and also (unbeknownst at the time) pregnant!

Ms. Devine did a bit too much jumping at this point, as first James tells Laura to leave, then the next scene picks up two months later when her pregnancy's confirmed, then it's two years later, and she's in a new home, with a new job, chasing after her toddler! It was just a bit too abrupt.

A near fatal car accident involving Bea and her husband (Jame's nephew, Sam) brings Laura back from Oceania to Tasmania, where James is confronted with Laura's soon-to-be two-year-old son!

Yes, things get worked out, but again, it seemed too rushed, with James and Laura too eager to get naked to spend enough time talking things out. The HEA should have come about a bit differently.

Not bad, but not one of the best.
