Detective Casey White #6

The Lighthouse Girls

Rate this book
A totally addictive mystery and suspense thriller

The girl shivers in the boat, trying to hold back her sobs as the man silently rows them towards the lighthouse under a dark sky. She thinks desperately of her big sister, how they’d laughed just a few hours before as they rode the Ferris wheel at the funfair. Will she ever see her again?

When the body of a teenage girl is found abandoned on a beach by a lighthouse in North Carolina’s Outer Banks, Detective Casey White is first on the scene. Breaking the news to the heartbroken parents, Casey is distraught to learn of a second tragedy: the girl’s eight-year-old little sister Shawna is missing too.

Searching the lighthouse building, Casey soon finds traces that Shawna was kept there: her clothes, a teddy bear. Someone has been keeping her alive, but where have they taken her?

When she learns that the girls were together at a visiting funfair the night they were taken, Casey races to interview the workers, but is only met with silence and turned backs. Digging into old cases, Casey’s blood runs cold as she realises there’s been a murder in the same location as the travelling fair going back years.

Now the funfair has disappeared without trace. Thinking back to a shadowy figure she noticed by the hall of mirrors, Casey is certain when they find the fair, they will find the killer hiding in plain sight. But with the whole town terrified for their daughters, can Casey hunt them down before it’s too late for little Shawna?

An absolutely unputdownable thriller that will have you gasping at the twists and turns. Fans of Karin Slaughter, Lisa Gardner and Robert Dugoni will be completely addicted.

desperate to find the girls eight-year-old sister Shawna. No doubt notifying a family when they lose a child is devastating, Casey’s job was that much harder when they realize that Shawna is missing. At the scene of the crime, a lighthouse near a beach, items are located that show that Shawna was likely kept at the location where the body was found. Casey can’t help but ponder as to why Shawna is missing. Furthermore, if Shawna is still alive, will they get to her in time?

As the search intensifies Casey discovers that the girls attended a funfair in the village. Talking to as many people as possible, turning over every clue, alerts Casey that something similar has happened before and that rests in cold cases that go back years. Casey uses her skills and rugged determination to connect past events to what is going on now with sincere hopes of finding Shawna alive.

Although the suspect pool is quite large, solving this case proves to be quite challenging because the members of the community appear to be keeping secrets, and this undoubtedly makes Casey’s job that much harder. This is a remarkable series that I have been thoroughly enjoying. Although The Lighthouse Girls is the sixth book in a riveting series, it is a series that is written quite well to the point it can very easily be read as a standalone. However, for the sake of continuity and understanding a bit more about the dynamic between Casey and her team, reading the books in order might be very enjoyable. Don’t miss this thrilling book, one that will keep you turning pages late into the night.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Book 6 in the Casey White series, i love this series and i am so glad i stumbled across it at the beginning of this year. If you haven't read books 1 to 5 then stop reading this review and pick up book 1 as i do feel it is needed to read the previous books.

Casey and the team are called to the beach the body of a teenage girl is found dead. When casey goes to break the news to the family she realises that their youngest daughter Shawna is also missing the strange thing is the parents never reported her missing. With her being so young the team are worried that she could be in even more danger, especially since the older sister was found dead. The problem they face is with so much on the line, the team are being met with lies from everyone. Question is whose ;and why?

I enjoyed this chapter of the series, i must say trying to work out what happened to the youngest sister and why the older one was killed was quite thrilling. i did guess part of the storyline but i didn't get the entire plot which was great. I found that once again i loved Casey and her haunt. Everytime there is a missing child it brings her straight back to her search for her little girl, even though she has now found her.
As per usual the structure of the narrative was well written and I was engaged throughout the story. I love the fact we get to follow the investigation as they do and trying to work out who is our bad guy and why was very thrilling, especially as everyone was lying about something, the parents, the neighbours and all others around them so trying to pick the truth from the lie made it even better. Like I said I did manage to guess the killer quite early on but the motive behind Shawna’s disappearance left me completely stumped and I found myself doubting everything I thought.

I thought the fact that Casey had found Hannah would make the storyline less interesting but it didn’t, the fact that we still get to go on the journey with them building their relationship and navigating the new world that they are in and how they fit in to each others lives. It is great because it's clearly not easy and the prose makes it very clear that it is difficult you can hear it in the text. Casey has looked for her daughter for so many years that now she has her what does she do? Hannah has a new name a new family and even a girlfriend and now she has her birth mum back. which in all honesty can be a bit sad to read but i am so glad they didn't write it as if everything worked out as easily as in reality that wouldn't happen. Sprangler writes so well i always feel like i am in the room.

In conclusion I would totally not only recommend the lighthouse girls but I would recommend the entire series. Detective Casey White is a great female lead and I love the fact that she has a heavy female team also. In this book we get to follow both her private and professional life. I also loved the fact that the prose is written in a way that keeps you guessing and also has you glued t the text. With twists and turns throughout the case it is very enthralling and I couldn’t put the book down, this is a page turner. I rate the lighthouse girls 3 stars.

Thanks to netgalley, bookouture and Quickly becoming a favourite author of mine B R Sprangler for the digital ARC of the lighthouse girls. Roll on book 7!!!!!!

I love when I discovered new to me writers and their novels. The latest is this grasping detective investigation that held my attention till the last page.

This was my first book in the series, but it could be easily read as a standalone as we get a good understanding of the main character's past.

A teenage girl is found dead and her sister has gone missing after both of them attending a funfair in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The setting is really interesting to read about as usually we get more big cities plots, so this was a refreshing idea for me.

The investigation will bring out a few hidden secrets from this community and the interactions were interesting to read. The main character has a great relationship with her team and my understanding is that one of them is not always present for all the books, but it’s a big part of the story.

It’s suspenseful at times and had a lot of turns where I thought I knew where this is going to end. A perfect read for many readers of the genre.

That ending surely was very unexpected and left a huge opening for the next instalment.

Very grateful to the publisher for my review copy though NetGalley.

This author continues to deliver. As soon as I see #brspangler, I'm hooked! Love these characters - their community and connection - can't wait for the next!
Casey lands a case if 2 missing sisters - teenager found dead, washed up on shore. The younger still missing. The girls had attended a local fun fair- their adoptive parents working, their neighbor gives them a ride.
A detective joins the team - his niece attended the fun fair, same details regarding her death. Could they be connected?
Fast paced, excellent writing and suspense. A must read!

Another Solid Entry In Series. With Book 5 (The Memory Bones) wrapping up the core long-term mystery of the series (and this book spoiling that reveal early, so be forewarned if you haven't read that book yet), I wondered then if Spangler was closing out the series, not really seeing how it could move forward. Here, in a sense Spangler is offering more closure, with former teammates returning and (without going *too* far into spoiler territory) another teammate's death in this tale - while not yet offering any hint of any further long term mystery. Still, this is a murder mystery series with heart, and I'm absolutely along for the ride in Book 7, whatever Spangler decides to do with that. Start earlier in the series if you're new to it - possibly all the way back at Book 1 (Where Lost Girls Go), but I personally started at Book 4 (The Crying House) and found that to be a reasonable entry point as well. When you do, you're going to want this book on hand anyway, just to come back to a now-favorite storyline. :) Very much recommended.

This wasn't my favorite Casy White book in the series, but it was still pretty good. I did like that they had two killers, though. It changed it up a bit. The clown killer was creepy as hell, though. It made it worse since he was smart enough to hide the murder weapon in plain sight and get away with it for so long. I'm glad he finally got caught. Laura Jackson's death was just as crazy. She got killed because she was a jealous wife. Their was literally no evidence the husband was doing anything to betray her, yet she still thought Laura was a threat. So what if Laura had a crush on her husband? It means nothing if he did reciprocate.

When the funfair arrives in the Outer Banks it is immediately a popular place for families to meet and for groups of youngsters to congregate. When Detective Casey White is called to a body found on the beach she discovers her victim had visited the fair before  disappearing. Arriving to speak with the parents, Casey and new partner Tracy find out the tragedy is far worse than they'd feared; their only other child is missing.

With the investigating department depleted and her relationship with Tracy still evolving Casey is dismayed to discover her victim isn't the first and knows it's up to her to ensure she will be the last. Reaching out to previous colleagues things finally begin to move but as their search for the killer and frantic hunt for the missing child continues her amalgamated team is rocked by tragedy as it strikes far too close to home.

This is the sixth Casey White novel and gripped me from the start. Casey and Jericho are among my favourite crime partnerships and although the latter isn't a major player in this investigation he is still a vital part of the storyline. After the major revelations of the previous book things are a little quieter this time around although the crime itself is a complex one which I enjoyed immensely along with the gradually evolving relationships of the main protagonists.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own. This is a great addition to a series all of which I happily recommend.

A funfair… what’s in a word? Sounds like fun for young and old, right? Well, yes it is. The games, the rides, the food that is oh so bad, but tastes so good,… It’s perfect for a day out for family and friends.

But there is a downside too. A lot of stalls creating a maze and many places for people to hide who are up to no good. There are often a lot of people as well, because the fair only stays for a few days. It’s easy to hide in a crowd. Which role does this funfair play or is it just a coincidence?

That is what is Casey and her very small team are faced with. I was a bit sad to see her perfect team fell apart, but everybody has the right to seek the job they dream about and that was what made me happy. Casey could not agree more, but she misses them thoroughly.

When more victims are being discovered, it’s time to join forces in order to prevent the culprit from killing again.

Maybe I should thank the baddies for bringing the team together if only for a while. 😉

That’s not all though. A few events occur having a very personal impact on her. Sad times, happy times… the circle of life.

Maybe a bit predictable, but still a very enjoyable read. 4 stars

Thank you, B.R. Spangler and Bookouture

When I started this book I wasn't aware that this was the 7th book in a series. I didn't have any issues reading the book because of this but it does mean that I now want to go back and read the other six!
I did see that this book contains a spoiler for the earlier books, but given that I've not read them and it will probably be a couple of years before I get through all of them I don't think I'll remember enough detail for it to cause me a problem.
This was almost like two separate stories that ran parallel to each other and then collided, from the description you think you know roughly where it's going to go and you're wrong. It doesn't. With that said, you know early on how the 2 stories are related and it means we have 2 hunts on the go. This was brilliantly handled.
I highly recommend this book but think that you should also read the 6 books previous as well, just in case.

Another crazy ride in the Detective Casey White series. I like how they all have their unique investigations etc- this one being a travelling circus with a clown serial killer. I also liked how there was the side story of the domestic crimes and how t was interwoven into the main storyline. I was sad to see the end of Dr Terri Swales :(

I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of The Lighthouse Girls, the sixth novel to feature Detective Casey White of the Outer Banks Sheriff’s Office.

The body of a teenage girl is found murdered and washed up on the shore. She is identified as 16 year old Laura Jackson and on notifying her parents Casey discovers that her eight year old sister, Shawna, is missing. The girls were last seen at a travelling carnival, which packed up and left before Casey could discover that Laura is not the only teenager who was murdered after a visit to this carnival.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Lighthouse Girls, which has plenty of twists and turns and offers more than the synopsis would suggest in its development. The novel is told almost entirely from Casey’s first person point of view. This brings the reader close to the investigation and allows them to get stuck into a meaty narrative.

This series is designed for entertainment, so it’s fairly light in its tone and not particularly profound in its procedure. So what when it has continual forward motion and an absorbing plot? It does what it’s designed to do and I read it quickly, wanting to know what would come next. I like that it starts with one body, expands to one body and a missing child and then keeps growing. The author does a great job of holding the reader’s attention with a linear plot and strategic reveals and developments. It’s easy to read and understand, but not at the expense of an interesting plot. I liked the way it all came together with almost everything explained. There is one loose end, but that may be me being picky.

The characters are fairly standard. Casey has had her problems in the search for her kidnapped daughter, but that’s now resolved so she can focus on her cases. She’s dedicated but a bit gooey about friendship in that saccharine way that gets a bit cloying.

The Lighthouse Girls is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.

Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for this ARC.

I am really enjoying this series which, in my opinion, gets better with each book. I did wonder how this series would progress when the ongoing thread in previous books was resolved and to be honest think the author has come back with a cracker of a book here. This author never disappoints and I thought the story got off to a great start and captured my attention right away. Here Casey and her team investigate a murder and missing girl. The main characters have really developed since the first book and I feel like I know them, and love the little glimpses into their lives outside work. I loved the return of a character who had moved on and had a part in this story with his investigation. I really liked the separate story threads, and think the author has a wonderful way of weaving a story and connects with readers through the characters. I was engaged in this read from start to finish. The book comes together really well and all loose ends were tied up nicely, and the ending was not what I expected. Overall a very engaging read with lots going on and a great addition to this series. Looking forward to the next one. If you like good, solid police procedurals then you will probably like these books and I’d recommend them.

I enjoyed this 6th book, The Lighthouse Girls as much as the others in this detective series. A teenager is dead and her sister is missing; they were both at the local funfair. Casey White is a great detective, a determined, smart, and compassionate woman, though she carries emotional baggage. The other characters are also well created and developed, especially ex-sheriff, trustworthy and amiable Jericho Flynn. Casey and the team's interactions are always interesting to read as they set about looking for the culprit(s).

Set in Outer Banks, North Carolina the plot pacing was frenetic with plenty of action, and there was certainly no room for tedium or boredom. The story was fascinating and I revelled in the problematical investigation. Enthralling to the very end, I shall be watching out for the next in the series and I'm immensely keen to see where the talented B.R. Spangler hopefully might take things next. A highly entertaining and absorbing police procedural which I recommend without any hesitation.

Disclosure: Thank you to Bookouture via Netgalley for providing a digital ARC of The Lighthouse Girls by B.R. Spangler for review. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.

A teenager is found dead on the beach and when Detective Casey White gives the terrible news to her parents she discovers their other daughter is missing. Has the killer abducted the girl or is she already dead...?
The Lighthouse Girls is the sixth book to feature Casey and her team. I have previously reviewed other books in this series but there are no spoilers about events in previous books. However, there is the continuation of Casey's personal life plotlines, in particular her abducted daughter.
The case is quite complicated as Casey uncovers information about the family of the dead and missing girls. The plot has many twists and turns which kept me guessing. I found the death and disappearance of such young girls to be hugely emotive and was willing Casey to succeed. The personal life of Casey plays a lesser role compared to other books.
There is a lot of forensic information in this book. However, the post mortem details are handled objectively so the emotion comes from Casey's response to what she sees. Almost all of the book is written from Casey's first person perspective which fully aligns us with her actions and emotions. The style of writing is easy to read and the plot develops at a reasonable pace.
The Lighthouse Girls is an enjoyable detective thriller.

An eight year old from her family is torn apart.

4.25⭐

The Lighthouse Girls returns readers to the Outer Banks and Detective Casey White, who at the end of book five found out what really happened to her daughter Hannah, and with the truth finally revealed and most of the team having moved on it's down to Casey and Tracy to investigate when a teenager is found dead by Casey's boyfriend Jericho in the water near a local lighthouse.

But what starts out as a simple murder investigation soon becomes much more when its revealed the dead teens sister is also missing and the pair were last seen at a travelling fun fair. But is someone from the travelling fair to blame or is there something far more sinister happening closer to home?

And with more murders that bring the old team back together, a death that hits close to home and plenty of twists this was a very engaging read and I was easily gripped. Not to mention I had no idea who was responsible until they were revealed.

I would therefore happily recommend The Lighthouse Girls to others.

This is my first book by this author and while it is book six in the Detective Casey White series, it functions perfectly well as a standalone book. One girl found dead, and another missing, after visiting the fair. The pain, grief, and fear, experienced by Laura and Shauna’s parents was palpable and I suspect there may be a trigger or two here for any parents who have gone through similar.

Casey was a great character, obviously with more backstory than could realistically be included in these pages. I definitely want her on my side if I’m in trouble. Other characters Jericho and Tracey were equally relatable and credible.

Overall, this story kept me wanting to read more, and also kept me guessing all the way through. I enjoyed the read, and am happy to recommend this to anyone, with the caveat that perhaps you will enjoy it more if you read the series in order, if only for character development, backstory, and better context. I gave The Lighthouse Girls, by B. R. Spangler, four stars.

For those readers who read the previous books in the series and wondered how the author would be able to pull off another book when it seemed to be wrapped up, no worries - Spangler seamlessly continues the series with many of the same characters returning in a way that totally makes sense.

This episode involves murder, kidnapping and even a creepy clown! But at the heart of it, is Detective Casey White who continues to be very relatable as well as smart and empathetic. The story is well paced. Spangler’s descriptions of the various settings and characters are vivid and paint a picture for the reader.

I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more! Thanks to the author for providing me an advanced copy. And if you haven’t read the prior books in the series, there’s enough background given so that you won’t feel lost. But if you’re looking for a bunch of good reads, read the entire series. You won’t be disappointed!

This is the sixth book in the series featuring Detective Casey White. I hadn’t read any of the previous books in the series but thought this read well as a stand-alone. Casey is called out when the body of a sixteen year old girl is found on the beach. On the informing the girl’s parents she discovers that her eight year old sister is also missing. On investigation Casey and her team realise that the girls had visited the local fair which had already left the town and discover that several more young girls have been murdered and also have been to the same fair. Is someone at the fair responsible for kidnap and murder? Casey and the team then have a race against time to discover the killer. This is a book with a well written plot and characters with twists and turns along the way. An enjoyable read.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.

This book is a captivating addition to the Detective Casey White series, delivering another thrilling mystery that will keep readers on the edge of their seats until the very end. It is about Detective Casey White as she investigates a series of baffling disappearances that seem to be linked to an abandoned lighthouse. The atmospheric setting of the coastal town adds an extra layer of intrigue to the story, with its eerie lighthouse casting a shadow of mystery over the proceedings.

At its heart, "The Lighthouse Girls" is a story about friendship, betrayal, and the darkness that lurks beneath the surface of even the most idyllic of settings. As Casey delves deeper into the secrets of the lighthouse and its connection to the missing girls, she must confront her own past and grapple with the consequences of her actions. With its compelling characters, intricate plot, and pulse-pounding suspense, "The Lighthouse Girls" is a must-read for fans of gripping detective fiction.

Very grateful to the publisher for my review this ARC though NetGalley.

The story was fascinating and I really enjoy it very much, looking forward to reading more. I do like this series. It's fast paced and excellent writing with enough thriller and suspense. Definately it is an unputdownable read with many frantic rollercoaster moments. It hooked me from the beginning and gripped me all the way through. It kept me turning pages late into the night. That ending surely was very unexpected and left a huge opening for the next instalment. Don't miss it. Definately love the next book of this series. Moreover, I do appreciated Spangler writes with great detail into the investigation and police procedure. The setting is brought to life on all pages. I highly recommend this book but think that you should also read the previous ones as well.

This was my first Detective Casey White book, though it’s the 6th in the series. There was a lot I liked about the book, and other aspects not as much. I find the author did a great job of keeping us “up to date” on what happened in the previous books, without dedicating a lot of pages to rehashing everything. It gave me enough background to not be confused, while also making me want to go back and read the backlog. There are a lot of simultaneous plot lines/lots of branches to the story to make it interesting without being chaotic. However I could never full get into the rhythm of the authors writing, like there seemed to be a speed up and slow down that happens, and I had to check a few times that I hadn’t accidentally skipped pages. The writing was quite dry and I found it to be in the clinical side.

I loved this fantastic murder mystery. The setting provided the perfect tone for the whole book. The eerie seascape, the lighthouse and the visiting funfair gave me the shivers. That opening chapter - chilling!

The lead detective, Casey, drove the investigation. I very much enjoyed being in her head and seeing the story unfold through her eyes. The team dynamics between her, Jericho and Tracey felt natural, and I devoured the pages that developed their relationships.

There were emotions aplenty to be had. I bounced from tense, to sad, to biting my nails. ‘The Lighthouse Girls’ is an unputdownable read with many frantic rollercoaster moments. Perfect for those who love a whodunnit.

I’m still new to this series so having a refresher Of Casey’s history was a good place to begin. Carnivals are fun to attend, but one In particular is quite deadly. As the bodies pile up, Casey has to put in a lot of overtime to track down the killer. Or is it killers? The old team gets back together temporarily, which was nice. There is a irrevocable loss, however, that made my heart lurch,
. The ending was just what I wanted, until it wasn’t. I will have to wait until the next one to see what happens.
I love all the lighthouses mention and the locale of the Outer Banks.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the early read.

I find the characters and the location of the books very appealing and it is the personal story of Casey and Tracy that draws me back time after time along with their detecting skills.
Several murders of young teenage girls and a missing 8 year old girl are the subject of this novel plus a personal tragedy for the team draw the reader in until the final page.
I look forward to the next book and the developing relationship between the long lost daughter and her mother who work side by side in the Outer Banks.

6th book in the series which I've been reading since the first book was an Amazon First Reads. Enjoy following the characters' stories but do feel a little less hooked/excited as the series goes on (although a certain bit of this book did have me in tears, I won't spoil it). So many grammar/typo/tense errors and a few details referred back to from previous books in the series which don't quite match up which does dull the shine of what is a good series - better editor required! Will continue to read the rest but just a bit disappointed the books have wowed me a little less as it's went on.
