What a Match

Rate this book
Sometimes what you’re looking for is right under your nose.

Meticulous and driven Gwen Gilmore knows what she wants… especially in a man. She is newly single and doesn’t have time for lackluster chemistry or mixed signals. But the dating scene proves to be slow and unserious, and she realizes she may need some help.

Professional help.

A matchmaker, to be more specific.

Nothing will distract her from finding a man who checks all the boxes, except maybe her brother’s grumpy best friend who’s just moved into her home.

Anthony Woods has had a crush on his best friend’s sister since the day he met her, and he’s managed the unfortunate affliction by keeping his distance. However, when apartment problems have him temporarily sleeping on her couch, Gwen is suddenly closer than ever. And as much as he tries, his scowls and frowns can’t stop the sparks from flying.

As they connect and get to know each other, Gwen can’t help but notice when the perfect-on-paper boyfriend she has in mind starts to take an unexpected shape. Will she stick to the dating plan outlined by the professionals? Or admit when it comes to love, there’s no right way to fall.

Note: This novel can be read as a standalone.

- Loved this book so much more than I thought I would!! I hadn’t read the back of the book before picking it up so I was surprised by the entire book from the dating hijinks, the whole roommate situation, and the delete topics of family & love.
- This book is SPICY, but still really loved it even though I don’t typically read books with tons of spice. I love that it added to the story instead of taking over the entire story.
- I loved this book even more than the first book in this series. You can definitely read this one without reading the first one though. Perfect for the autumn season. Exactly the kind of book I was looking to pick up!

3-3.5 Stars?

This book was okay but not because of the characters but the plot.

Okay so I love Anthony and Gwen. Both were great characters and I absolutely loved their individual stories in this book.

On one hand we have Gwen who is searching for love and joins this company that should help her find her perfect match. Most of her feelings towards love really relate to her family backstory that we get to see in book one (make a scene) and I was happy to see the correlation and that it all made alot of sense.
On the other hand we have Anthony, Gwen's brother's best friend who runs the Gym with Duncan. He was grumpy and quiet and had some amazing scenes with Ms Katherine and Enoch who were both btw such a funny add on to the story ESPECIALLY Enoch and his little feud. His family backstory was also good but I just wish he had more on it. It was mentioned only shortly and I wanted to learn a lot more about him.

This also leads into the plot of wanting more. This book is as short as 'make a scene' but way more packed. We have so many different scenes because we have more than just one main plot: We have them having to live together because Anthony's apartment is broken as well as the match making and dating plot line.
AND THEN another plot line gets added on in the end that has nothing to do with the apartment or matchmaking story that makes the book even fuller.

Even though that third plot had some pretty funny scenes in it, I wish it was included differently because it made everything happen so quickly. I really loved the matchmaking plot and wanted to see more of those fun dates but instead we got the third thing and then I got bored.

And that is just a bit disappointing because intially I liked Anthony more than Duncan but I think I am back to preferring Duncan. Gwen and Retta as still both amazing in their own ways.

So yeah this was oaky because it was a bit too full for my liking.

Absolutely delightful contemporary romance, with a heroine who signs up with a matchmaking agency after a string of lousy dates, just as her brother's best friend has to move in with her for a few weeks. There's nothing radical in the plot (she's looking for a 'perfect' man, he's harbouring a crush on her he's afraid to voice), so everything depends on the execution, which is great. The tropes are deployed cleverly and enjoyably, the characters are real and terrifically likeable, and the romance feels really well developed. Most of all, the writing is funny, assured, with a light touch and a great line in dialogue, and the editing is top notch. And the cover is gorgeous.

(It says something that this is the best editing and best cover I've encountered in a while, and it's a self pub.)

A terrific read, I think stronger than the first in the series, and I'm greatly looking forward to the next. Mimi Grace is a rising star.

3.75/5 ⭐️ OMG this was so adorable! Anthony and Gwen were lovely! I adored them together.

His crush on her was so cute! He would get all nervous and tongue-tied in her presence 🥹

They were temporary roommates and he couldn’t fall asleep until he knew she got home safely 🥺❤️. He was a bit grumpy and an introvert but deep down he was such a caring and wonderful guy. I loved him! I also really liked Gwen! She was very likable and kind of funny. She had me smiling so much.

Overall, this was so cute and I can’t wait to read more books by this author.

The only two things that bothered me was how Gwen was going on a lot of dates with other guys in the beginning of the book and I just wish it didn’t last for as long as it did. And I feel like their physical relationship started out of nowhere.

Anthony has a crush on Gwen. Gwen just got out of a 3 year relationship and she's been struggling on the dating scene. She's hoping this new match making service will help her find the one. Anthony needs a place to stay while his apartment is getting worked on. He's had a crush on Gwen for a couple of years but has been too afraid to talk to her even though he's single.

Tony and Gwen for the win! The chemistry was great and I liked how the developed a little frienship first so it felt completely natural and not rushed. The fall vibes throughout this book were great and Mimi Grace was able to maintain the cuteness of the book while also including some great sex scenes.

I also like that she didn't resort to cheap drama with Anthony and Duncan just because Gwen is Duncan's sister. Instead Duncan was supportive of his friend and urged him to admit his feelings.

3.5-3.75*

Mimi Grace is joining Talia Hibbert & Chloe Liese as an autoread romcom writer. She writes fun sexy stories and HELLO?! her covers obviously scream *grabby-hands* at my superficial bish magpie heart 😍🙃

The MCs were fun in this, I liked how they orbited one another being drawn closer through sweet interactions...he's obviously pining which I know will speak to many, but thankfully for me not in an overbearing saccharine way tf. The "forced" proximity (I don't mean Stockholm syndrome or anything sinister) of them moving in together was well handled and shone a light on Duncan & Gwen's sibling relationship which was adorbs and I'd love to have seen more of their family interactions...Tony's first family brunch would've been fun to see is all I'm saying 😈
I will say the mom/daughter interactions were well done, their last convo was pitched just right. I was half afraid upon first meeting the mom in this read that she might be overbearing & pushy with the "y u single" stuff - but quite the contrary and again I lowkey wish we could have gotten a few more interactions between herself and Gwen but that's me being nitpicky + greedy 🤗

The friendships in this were awesome, I got the biggest 🤩🤩 when Raven/Gwen & Duncan/Tony interacted...each time we were blessed with these convos I had the biggest smile & snort 🤣
The Mr Enoch pumpkin storyline was so dang cute and altho some of the events at the harvest festival could be seen as OTT - the balance of humour and heart really worked to counteract my usual cynical responses from dampening the enjoyment 😅
Also what's not to love about the idea of chicken karaoke 😁

I wish there had been a smidge more communication between the MCs, I am greedy and always want more but as with the previous book in this series I like that there was no messy drama/break up. The way Mimi crafts her romcoms with an "end date" on the initial arrangement helps navigate this snafu that so often trips me up in "typical" romcom reads. Thankfully there was no glaring lack of- or miscommunication that leapt out at me, the set up of the storyline with Gwen using the matchmaking service dove tailed nicely into their communicating which was a relief as it could have been used a tool to bludgeon us with crossed wires and I was so glad that it wasn't 😊

I'm so delighted to see there will be a third book in this series and am renewing the call from my previous review for Nia to get her own story too - pretty please 🥹 (puppy dog eyes)

This book was actually so funny. I found myself busting out laughing multiple times throughout the story. This couple was just very cute and Anthony silently pining for Gwen for all these years was just the cherry on top. Anthony and Gwen were so annoying with how they couldn’t realize the other person’s feelings for them but it made the ending that much more satisfying. I think I’m growing to really like the grumpy x sunshine character dynamic especially when the grumpy is not mean but just broody. Mimi Grace is one to watch and I can’t wait for the next romance in this series.

✨THANK YOU MIMI GRACE FOR THE ARC OF YOUR BOOK!✨

Oh my gosh!!! This story was EVERYTHING! The story is just as cute as its cover!

I might’ve just developed an interest for the strong silent type. Because y’all Anthony Woods has my heart! Dang, I’m in LOVEEEE. And Gwen is so amazing and fun!! Anthony and Gwen are so perfect for each other I could not stop swooning over their connection and the romance!! I loved it so much!!

This story has “the guy falls first” trope in it. And I loved how in the first book of the series (Make a Scene) we see how Anthony had already developed feelings for Gwen. OH and the spiceeeeeee was SOO FREAKING GOOD! I will be thinking about those scenes for a while for sure!! 😏🌶

It doesn’t get cuter than this story y’all… if you love romance this book is it!! I highly recommend reading this when it officially comes out on April 13th!

Honestly do yourself a favor and pick up all Mimi Grace books because you will not be disappointed! Ahhh My heart is so happy!! 🥰

INTRODUCING MY NEW PERSONALITY!
'What A Match' is the second installment to the Lovestruck series. It follows Anthony and Gwen. Gwen is Duncan's sister and Anthony is Duncan's best friend and business partner. One day something happens to Anthony's apartment and he is looking for somewhere to temporarily stay. That place ends up being Gwen's house. (SO FORCED PROXIMITY AND THERE WAS ULTIMATELY A ONE-BED TROPE)!!
Anthony SERVED boy obsessed. The book is dual POV and he was in love with her since BEFORE the book started. Duncan was absolutely hilarious. I was CACKLING at his jokes. The book takes place in October, so fall is the PERFECT time to read it. There were so many fun fall scenes and it was overall such a cozy read.
This book is a new OBSESSION! It was the easiest five stars I have given recently. It was SO SO good. I fully expect this book to become a comfort read for me. I plan to reread and reread and reread it. Just for funsies.
PICK THIS BOOK UP RIGHT NOW!

Tropes: Brother's best friend, one bed, grumpy x sunshine (done right), boy obsessed, and forced proximity.

4.5 stars!

this was a really cute brother's best friend, roommates, grumpy sunshine romance. there's something so fun to read about an awkward boy being in forced proximity with his crush and internally losing his mind but then doing the cutest little things. such a sweet little read but surprisingly dirty, in the best way.

my only gripe with this book and the others in the series is the endings always seem just a little rushed.

There is something so wholesome in her contemporary romances. It has a perfect mix of humor, feelings, steam, and banter!

I enjoyed reading this one..Even though is not as good as her previous books I still think it deserves all the praise.

3 stars 🌟 kind of the same as the last one, a little bit too fast for me 😭 anthonygwen had small cute moments but the sex kind of dominated the fluff. which is okay for some people but i would’ve liked to see more cute moments and not have the sex be the only intimate time we get to see them 💔 so this was okay but obviously something was missing

I love reading books that match the season I am in, and this book embodied the Fall season. The two characters did fun Fall activities, and gave me what I wanted. However, I wanted it to be longer.

Once the love interest came to his senses and admitted that he had feelings for the FMC, the book ended. I wish we had spent more time with them being together and happy. We spent a lot of time following the FMC around as she dated other people, and I liked that! But I wanted to see her date the MMC more.

What a fun book! However I wanted to shake Gwen, so maybe it wasn't fun 🤭

Gwen is described as an over achiever so why wouldn't she apply this quality to her love life. Well it's because modern dating is awful, sesspool awful. Gwen's mom gently suggests a matchmaking service to help her find love. Great idea? Perhaps!

What I will say is that Gwen is going on several dates but is not enjoying them. So why is it important to keep trying? I think the underlying message is she achieved everything except relationship status so her stats are incomplete 🤔

Well a series of unfortunate events lands Anthony on her couch and something strange happens. He's grumpy and doesn't talk much but is very considerate and a good listener. He's consistent and loyal. So why is Gwen sleeping on him? Girl, because she so busy chasing butterflies that she literally is missing what's in front of her. See why I wanted to shake her.

To be fair, neither Gwen nor Anthony were great at communicating their feelings but I loved that Anthony had an outlet to say he's feeling something for her. I love a MMC who has friends. One thing I didn't quite understand was his relationship with his parents and why he was on his own so early. But whatever the backstory it's part of the reason why he struggles to express himself. Definitely a grumpy cinnamon roll or strong silent type who likes to 👅😽😉

Thank you to the author to providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review. It's a 3.5 star so I'm rounding up.

sorry i did not like this book. it wasn’t as charming as the first book in this series, and i did not care about the characters at all. everything was very surface level and we barely even know anything about either of the love interests. i was bored for most of this, and the sex scenes were cold and cringey. apparently anthony has had a crush on gwen for years, i find this hard to believe. and there was hardly any tension.

v sad this doesn’t match up to its gorgeous cover and premise :(

This was super cute. Absolutely loved Gwen & Anthony together. That man was stuck on her the moment he laid his eyes on Gwen, loved that for her. The spicy scenes were really great as well, wouldn’t be able to tell how spicy it is from the cover but it definitely goes there. Gwen was so stubborned, like it too her way too long to admit her feelings for Anthony were real feelings and not just sexual attraction. Loved this, definitely wish we got to see them more when they actually became a couple.

Book 2 in this series was cuuute! Another winner from Mimi Grace, whose books definitely need to be optioned for film! This was make a sweet rom com.

Anthony and Gwen were great together and I love me a best friend's sibling/sibling's best friend trope. Especially if he's had a crush on her for a while, Which Anthony has.

The forced proximity element also added a nice element to everything and dialed up the potential for tense filled sexy moments.

Also, the cover???? Let's take a moment to swoon over the perfection? Leni (the cover designer) never misses!

So this was a cute on with a side of steamy and I would totally rec it!

Summary: Gwen just tumbled out of a long term relationship and straight into “I’m too old to be casually dating what do I do???” Panic mode. With the help of a match maker she’s determined to go from single, to back in a relationship as soon as possible. Even if she’s flying through these dates so fast it’s giving speed dating. Anthony has known Gwen for a while, given that she’s his best friends sister. So when he can’t stay at his apartment for at least a few months he turns to his friend for help. Being that he’s shacked up with his new girlfriend that isn’t going to really work.. and Anthony feels like a bit of a burden. In the end he ends up living with Gwen instead. And holding back how he feels about her is becoming more and more difficult given the circumstances. With a few close calls and heated moments between the two. Gwen starts caring less and less about her match making dates and more about her current roommate.

I love them :(. I really like seeing 100% different personalities be interested in each other. Anthony was such a little cinnamon bun I wanted to hug him. He’s so used to holding in how he feels or things that bother him. He’s also very quiet and it’s mistaken for him being the ultimate grump but as time goes on and we actually get to hear what he’s thinking you see the reasoning behind what he does and why. Which is why dual POV will always reign superior in romance books. The small moments between these two were so precious and I just loved seeing how she would look at a situation vs him. And how it ultimately worked out lol. The steamy scenes were pretty damn good. And the personalities of both of them were very well done. Gwen was so relatable and the match making situation was an interesting addition. Definitely one of my new favorite book couples.

This is my third read from Mimi Grace and definitely my favourite! With its witty dialogue, lighthearted vibes, and swoonworthy romance, it was absolutely delightful.

Gwen knows exactly what she wants in a man—but she is exhausted by the dating scene. After a friendly push from her mother, Gwen seeks help from a matchmaking agency, Hearts Collide. She's on a mission! But when Anthony, her brother's grumpy best friend, is forced out of his apartment due to repairs, landing him temporarily on her couch, perhaps her perfect match is closer than she thinks.

Harbouring a crush on Gwen for years, Anthony has succeeded at keeping his distance ... until now. I loved the slow, genuine build of fiery chemistry! And I really don't want to deter you from reading this any month of the year, but this would make a perfect autumn read. With its setting and fall-themed events, including a hilarious pumpkin weigh-off mishap, I loved the various activities that pushed Gwen and Anthony even closer together. It was so good!

This is so cute and actually funny! It's rare when I actually laugh out loud at books so this was very welcome. So light and and easy to kick your feet at and giggle. Reminds me of my queen Talia Hibbett in literally all the best ways, so that's fun. It was a short read but great, because rom coms really don't need to be stretched out for forever. The tropes of he fell first and forced proximity made for great tension. The side characters were also so wholesome and likeable like her mom and the old couple.

And the fall aesthetic! I'm living out all my fall fantasies through books this year so that was perfect.

Love a black romance to infinity to infinity and black girls just being happy and in love.

I'm also excited to learn this is a series of interconnected people like with Helen Hoang. Makes for fun Easter eggs.

this was absolutely amazing & exactly what i need it. it has the brother's best friend trope + forced proximity/roommates because Tony and Gwen have to move in together. Tony has also had a crush on Gwen since he first met her and dealt with it by avoiding her. so what happens now that he has to live on her couch? well, i think you can imagine it since this is a romance 😌 it was a quick, short, wonderful read, and the romance is so cute and steamy at the same time. absolutely loved it and cannot wait for the next book by mimi grace (especially since i loved her previous books as well)

If you are like me, obsessed with 2000 romantic comedies I recommend any book by
Mimi Grace.
What I enjoyed about reading What A Match is that the story was paced perfectly, despite being a short novella. The chemistry between Anthony & Gwen 🤌🏾. It was refreshing to read a romance novel where the love interest is not an “alpha male”, but instead a sweetheart who’s dominant in the bedroom. 😏

Ugh, this cover is so gorgeous. I mean seriously, every time I see it I feel allllll the autumn vibes, and I love that.

Typically novellas are quick paced because of their length, but this story felt so natural and sweet, which really allows you to settle in and enjoy this story in its entirety. Gwen and Anthony were great, and the side charcters and town drama was sooo much fun. The MC's love story had a bit of a slow start due to Gwen using a matchmaking service and Anthony being in denial about their connection. And initially it had me worried about the pacing and if this novella would work out for me, in the end it did.

The pacing honestly allowed them to come together at a more natural pace. I would have loved an additional 20 pages of them being together as a couple because it felt like they finally realized they loved each other, and then boom, the story is over. Other than that, this was a super sweet fall romance, and I definitely recommend it.
