I am desperate for freedom, for peace, and for justice. As I leave captivity and step into the bright sun-filled day, a wave of relief washes over me. I am not free yet, though. Walking between barbed wire topped walls toward the exit gate, I breathe in fresh air, preparing for the next challenge. An enemy posing as a lover waits for me.
I will evade him, though.
Robert Maxim meets me at the prison gate, his smile predatory and victorious. I blank my mind. If I think about my plan, Robert will see it on my face. He expects me to do something—it's part of the fun for him.
Is this fun for me, too?
His hand cups my upper arm as he bends to brush a kiss against my cheek. Robert’s scent engulfs me: low notes of sandalwood and fine leather balanced by a sharp tang of cold metal.
"You look lovely," Robert says.
I'm wearing lightweight black cargo pants, unbuttoned to make room for my growing pregnancy, and tucked into my boots which are laced tight at my ankles—they keep spiders out when in the jungle. Under the parka that Special Agent Consuela Sanchez gave me when we flew back to the States all I have on is a thin tank top. It's cold here in DC, not so much in Costa Rica.
Robert is wearing a camel hair overcoat a few shades yellower than the copper in his beard. The collar is pulled up and his cheeks are tinged pink from the cold. A soft wind plays with his dark hair gone silver at the temples.
Behind Robert, a black SUV with tinted windows idles. Brock, his head of personal security opens the back door. Brock is big and broad with weathered skin the color of brushed brass. His dark coat captures the sunlight, seeming to hide it somewhere it will never be found.
"Good to have you back, Ms. Rye," Brock says as I get into the back seat.
"Thanks, Brock. It's good to be back." Robert joins me. "Where are we going?" I ask. "To my apartment?"
Robert smiles. "Yes."
When Robert faked his own death he really went the extra mile by leaving me most of his worldly possessions, including his apartment in Washington DC. Now that he is forcing me to marry him to avoid prosecution—a husband can choose not to testify against his wife—he'll be getting his wealth back.
"I may need you to sign a prenup," I say. "You realize I'm a very wealthy woman."
Robert laughs as we merge onto the highway. "Your wish is my command."
"Yeah, right," I grumble, looking out the window. The industrial area we're leaving slides by in a smear of speed.
Robert captures my hand, pulling it into his lap. "Sydney," his voice is serious and I turn to look at him. "I recognize this isn't what you wanted."
I huff a laugh. "You're so observant Robert, was it the threat of giving birth in prison, or just the regular old forcing me to marry you?" I hold my chin with my free hand, pretending to be really thinking. "I wonder if I'm being triggered by the fact that you're treating me like an object rather than a person."
"Sydney," his voice is lower now, a warning. I have to look away to keep the thoughts bubbling up in my mind hidden from him.
You will learn that I am not an object. Only a thinking, feeling, sentient being can ruin you the way I plan to.
P.S. The dog does not die. **Beware: If you can’t handle a few f-bombs, you can’t handle this series.**
I write because I love to read, but I have specific tastes...
If I was offered a job as a professional reader with no strings attached, I would take it. Getting paid to sit around and read while drinking tea all day—I'm there. Since that’s not possible, I became an author.
I write the books I want to read—stories that give me the immersive reading experiences I crave. When a series grabs me, and it's all I can think about, I'm SO happy. When my inner dialogue starts sounding like the protagonist of my current read, I think, Oh yeah, this is IT. This is what I love.
When I finish a book, and I NEED to immediately grab the next one in the series, that’s the intensity I crave. When I binge read an entire series, I want to feel like my own reality changed—as if the stories I read affected the real world just a little. After a great series I'm a little wiser, a little more grateful for my everyday existence, and a little more aware that my personal perspective is not everyone's.
Personally, I like to spend time in fictional worlds where justice is exacted with a vengeance, even though good and bad are not always black and white. Give me raw stories with a main character who occasionally makes me laugh, is flawed like we all are, and feels like a friend by the end of the first few chapters. They don’t have to be a friend I always LIKE, per se, but a part of me has to root for them.
For me, the sentence structure is important. Too much passive voice, and I'm out. I do not mind four-letter words at all though. Sex in books can go either way—fade to black or show me the details, but either way there has to be a reason it’s in the story. I'm also into heroic pets, plots that seem totally unhinged but all come together in the end with a BANG, and long series so I always have more to look forward to.
Those are the types of stories I love reading, so that’s how I write. If you’re into some or all of the above then I think we are going to get along fantastically.
Reading this book without having read any of the previous 13 books is more difficult. Lots of things never get explained. And, then, to make things worse, this book ends with "Read the next book to find out what happens". I like to read series, but I like them to have some degree of stand-alone value.
Robert Maxim has had the pregnant Sydney Rye released from jail, on the tacit agreement she'll marry him, so he can't be forced to testify against her in court. What secrets and plans has Sydney kept from him? Who's kidnapped in broad daylight and why?
A sinister turn of events leaves one person dead, another fobbed off with excuses by a senior politician and Sydney, Blue and two others fleeing for their lives. Will they make it?
I love the way Emily Kimelman expertly develops the characters of Sydney and Robert, teasing her true feelings for him as she expresses doubts via an internal dialogue. Yes she loves him in one way, yet when the father of her unborn son turns up and confronts Robert, she confusingly (to all three of them), says she wants them both - even after Robert tests her by making her believe he really is dead this time, to assess her reactions, showing he can be selfish and cruel for his own purposes. It seems highly unlikely that Sydney will get an HEA any time soon - and the only male she can rely on, is, as usual, Blue, her four-legged true friend and guardian.
Get Emily Kimmelman's amazing Fatal Breach today. It guarantees satisfaction to fans of Clive Cussler, Kristi Belcamino and Steven Moore - to whom I can highly recommend it - and any book-lover of all-action thrillers with a strong female lead!
Another winner from Emily Kimelman. As a member of her ARC team I have promised to write an honest review. I love the way her book is written in the view of each character in that timeline. Of course Sydney and friends wind up in perilous predicament and is so exciting to see where they go. At 80% I had to stop reading because it was killing me. Just when I thought I could breathe easy..... well I'll tell ya. Anyway this episode ends in another cliffhanger which I am not fond of so I am lessening my 5 star review to 4. Come on Ms Kimelman don't make us wait so long for the next book, PLEASE!
We got into some serious stuff in this book, really deep stuff! This author has put a lot of thought into what she's trying to say and I think that's amazing. Given me a lot to think about. And so much happens in this book, and it happens to everyone!! Must start the next book!
Fatal Breach – So, the last book had a cliffhanger of Syd getting arrested. This book had Syd getting released on the basis that Robert, who got her arrested, was now refusing to testify against Syd on the condition that she marry him. SERIOUSLY??? Uuuggghhh!!! And so, the nonsense begins.
Having never given birth to a child, I have heard from relatives and friends that pregnancy hormones can wreak havoc on a woman’s overall health and well-being, thus, making them behave in a manner that is not in line with their typical disposition and behavior. Suffice it to say, Syd is not her typical bad@$$ self in this installment. Unfortunately, she was quite often a little irritating and annoying. Don’t even get me started on the whole nonsense with Robert and Mulberry.
The end was a bit of sloppy mess and seemed to have just been thrown together. Fortunately, it was a really quick read. This was probably my least favorite installment of the series.
I love Sidney Rye and hate every time one of the books end, but now, after waiting anxiously for book 14, it comes to a cliff hanging ending, and now it will test my patience while I wait for book 15.
I love the Sydney Rye books. I really do. I love the dogs and all that. The main reason for the 4 star review is the cliffhanger. I am definitely not a fan of huge cliffhangers anymore.
I've read every book in this series and before reading this one I went back to books one and two. I re-read them since it had been a while since first getting to know Sydney Rye and I needed to get into that person's life and idiosyncrasies. Then I started Fatal Breach. So far so good. But it wasn't long before I realized that Sydney's not so much about figuring out who she is. It seems now she's more about who other people think she. Oh, she's indignant and resisting but she's getting to where she's ready to burn it all down so as to start over. But won't that probably yield the same screwed up world that we have many iterations of before. This book went off on a fanatical tangent that throws a group (stupid though they may be) under the bus so a "better", but equally scary, group can take over. And, yes, that group will take over because nature abhors a vacuum. We can all join hands around a campfire and sing, "Cum by ya" (sp) but there will NEVER be the equality that Her Prophet espouses. Don't get me wrong, I would love having the equality she desires. But killing unwilling participants is the way to do.
I must admit, this book was masterfully written, no dead spots of verbosity and the storyline flowed well. Since most of the characters are familiar there's no fault there. My interest was piqued to discover where the story would take us and because of Emily's usually great writing ability I was anxious to keep reading right to the end. So there's that. But the teaser glimpse into the next book will probably keep me reading. Or maybe not.
Sydney is back, she is better than ever, more determined than ever and out for blood as always so don’t step in her way… Sydney is fierce as f..k on a normal day add in her need for vengeance and pregnancy hormones and look out, duck for cover because Sydney is in a take no prisoners mood. Sydney is out of prison. She has struck a deal but can it be pulled off… Robert Maxim her (cough) soon to be husband (cough, choke) is up to his usual games and Sydney is sick of it all. Mulberry is Mulberry he wants Sydney… maybe. What does Sydney want? Have either of these men actually asked her ??? Pffft as if they would ask they know what Sydney wants they don’t need to ask!!! Then there is Dan or you know Dan Dan the nosy man cause he keeps close tabs on those he loves… But hey it’s for their own good not in an obsessive stalker isn way… Dan would never go that far…lol Dans new love is giving him more trouble than he imagined. Petra has a few new troubles Joyful Justice maybe on the rocks or about to explode and the Her Prophet… well let’s just say this book has so much jammed into it you won’t be able to put it down I couldn’t.
This review applies to this entire series, thus far. Generally well written, this series features interesting, lovable characters, taut storylines and edge-of-your-seat suspense. Although I could do without the sex and profanity, it fits the story and characters, so I deal with it. There are a lot of places where I would have chosen different words to use, to make it flow more fluidly and sound better, but that's just me. There are other places in which the dialog is not clear as to who is speaking, which is frustrating. But, worst of all, it is clear that this writer doesn't know firearms and their jargon very well, as certain specific terms are misused and some weapon-related narration doesn't make sense. To one who knows weapons and related terminology, this really interrupts the flow of the narrative and becomes annoying. I would gladly consult for her on this. Despite its flaws, it is a good story, with engaging characters, gripping suspense and human lessons. Recommended, if you can overlook the sex and profanity.
The ongoing story of Sydney and Blue continues with characters you love and love to hate. Fatal Breach has pregnant Sydney leaving prison, with Robert picking her up and immediately trying to work his wiles on her. There is enough suspense, mystery and action that will keep you reading to figure out motives, intentions, and whether someone is truly good, evil or some combination.
Fatal Breach is the fourteenth in the Sydney Rye series and is a longer and in some ways, more complex story than previous additions to the series. Although not necessary to enjoy this story, it is very enlightening to read the series and understand the evolution of each of the characters. Emily Kimelman's Sydney Rye books may open your eyes a bit wider and possibly have you thinking more about the power structures between the sexes, corporations and globally.
Sydney always makes me feel powerful, she’s her own person and reports to no one. As the series has evolved so has Sydney and her team. We have moved on from just Sydney’s point of view to reading from multiple people with a mission and a purpose. This is a series for men and women, because there is something for everyone: bullets fly, feelings are proclaimed and secrets run dark and dirty. These are books that sit with you for a bit as you remember impactful moments and thoughts. Readers can always count on a thrilling story and an ending that it’s quite a cliffhanger but pretty close. I have given my review voluntarily after reading an early copy.
I was able to grab this early thanks to the author’s direct site!
This journey with Sydney and the crew is eye opening! So much happens to quite a few of our main players. Sydney comes to terms with some hard decisions. Petra reflects on her purpose. Even special agent Consuela Sanchez is left wondering what the right side really is. All this happens as the Her Prophet’s message rises the world over. A message that speaks volumes of what’s happening in real life.
I can’t get enough of this series and I’m looking forward to so much more.
Once again, Sydney & Blue, keep us on the edge of our seat in anticipation. Twists and turns along the way, some completely unexpected, has us wondering what's next. At one point, I thought I had it "figured out", only to have a whole new scenario present itself. One of my favorite parts of all of this series, is that the twists throughout always "make sense". You're never left wondering....why? I highly recommend this complete series to anyone who likes excitement, and a strong lead character, one with a lot of guts and a definite edge. You won't be disappointed. Enjoy !
Well, Sydney is at it again and pregnancy hasn't slowed her down a bit. The lighter side: Robert Maxim is sure he's playing her; I'm sure it's the other way around. And Sydney is playing Robert and Mulberry against each other! (Sydney: "So this is what it’s like to get in touch with my desire." The darker side: Consuela and Petra play a big part in this as they team up with Sydney to find and protect the Her Prophet, but there are several other forces out to find her, too! All in all, another great Sydney and Blue romp!
The spoiler is later I fell back into the quickness that this series' books offer. Triller, a little bit of mystery. Kimelman's previous books were feminist definitely, but this one is even more so. Like damn. And once again, I am left kinda with a cliffhanger and wanting to know more about what's going on.
Side note and spoiler. Yes, sure Sydney can want both Mulberry and Robert, but telling them both that when they don't necessarily consent is not how to do the whole poly thing. Also seeing Sydney realize her love for Robert is nice.

Wow. This series is so relevant to so much going on in the world today. I think I at last understand what is the patriarchy, and why we all should fight it. Or rather, those of us who strongly believe in equality of the sexes. The habit in the last few books in this series to switch from one major character to another, chapter by chapter, keeps the tension high and the story rolling along. And where that writing style arises first frustrated me, I now really like it. Another excellent contribution to this amazing series.
Well, I used to adore this series. Then the author in this book went full on CRT / every man is a sexist.. As a woman of mixed heritage I can say it’s utter bull. Never been a victim because of my gender or race. It’s a mentality. And believing either of the lies is a weakness you have no right to use as an excuse to demand special rights. Equal rights does not mean equal outcome. Hard work, on your own, earns that. Disgusted… Stop drinking the Kool-Aid.
Fatal Breach develops the Sydney Rye series with drama and a flourish. Two very strong, protective men are in love with her; one of whom she is married while the other is the father of the son she carries. As if that isn’t enough drama in her life, Sydney becomes embroiled in a kidnapping and a murder. I am looking forward to Book #15 as you will too. I heartily recommend beginning this series with Book #1 and binge reading straight through. Enjoy!
There are so many plots holes in this book. So many of the murder attempts on Petra are unexplained. Why does Richard kidnap Consuela’s niece and then they send her to kill Petra? How the hell do the Action men know to target Dan’s car? And why does Petra end up being the one to witness the Prophet Her’s death. What a cop out ending to that plot line? The overall story kept me on the edge of my reading chair. But very unsatisfied with the plot. Love Petra and Consuela.

This didn’t start the way I thought it would but wow. This was pretty good. I did struggle to understand why Sydney tolerated so much of Robert’s manipulation especially when he went all Alpha-hole on her stating a bunch of possessive BS. I did really enjoy the bit with Robert and Mulberry after she convinced Barry to release her. That was classic Sydney. Consuela has a rough go in this book. Her world view is in complete upheaval.
Sydney Rye at her best! Being pregnant does not slow her down one bit. This continuing adventure will keep you captive from the first page. The characters developed earlier in the series are back, with a few surprises, and seemingly conflicting loyalties to keep you guessing whet’s REALLY going on. Excellent read.
Sydney is pregnant and her and Blue show no sign of slowing down. Robert Maxim is trying to force marriage, the profit is back and Sydney is busy kicking behind. All the while I love to see the evolution of some of my favorite characters. The internal dialog we get from Sydney is out of this world. Plus Mulberry confronting Robert was a must read.
Sydney has been released from jail but now must marry Robert Maxim. She insists she doesn't love him, but doth she prost too much? What about her feeling for Mulberry?
Petra and Consuela both must deal with personal conflict which adds even more twists to the story. I love the character development.
There is so much action and conflict that it is really hard to put this down.
I couldn’t wait for this book to come out and it didn’t disappoint. Sydney was on top of her game. This book kept you wanting to read more could not put it down. Can’t wait to see who takes over since the profit was killed. Is Sydney going to stay and lead or is she going back to her other life. Can’t wait until the next book to see what twist and turns it takes
Shoot outs, jetting around the world even repelling down a cliff side with Blue in tow. This book has most of the major players; Robert, Mulberry, Petra, Lennox, Dan and Her Prophet. This one, like most of Sydney’s adventures is a non stop. My only complaint now we must wait for Emily to finish Book #15. Please Hurry.
Emily has done it again! Fatal Breach is up to or even past her usual great standards. So many things going on her writing is starting to remind me of Tom Clancy with his deep plots. Great book and great addition to the Sydney Rye series with a true "cliff hanger" ending! Waiting patiently for book 15.
This series never fails to keep you entertained. Enjoyable characters and storyline every time. I smile every time one of the dogs are mentioned in the books, as they are depicted so well. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series to see how Sydney deals with her feelings for two very different men, who both love her.
This is book 14 in the series and we now find Sydney getting out of one prison only to enter into another by marrying Robert. So many twists and turns that it was hard to stop reading just so I can catch a few hours of sleep so I wouldn't be a zombie the next day at work.
Sydney and blue take us on an adventure!! Being pregnant isn't slowing Sydney down. I love that this book has all the main characters with their own point of view. I love how much Sydney and her crew have evolved. I am not so patiently waiting for the next book in this series!!!
