After finishing the Throne of Glass series, I couldn’t leave this world behind. I stumbled across this original version and it’s like reading an alternate universe but the heart of TOG is here. It’s beautiful. No spoilers because this is something that should be experienced with complete surprise. As an aspiring writer, reading this draft and having read what it evolved to was fascinating and inspiring. Thank you!

Well, this was certainly interesting to read… I love Sarah J. Maas’s works but this was just very cringeworthy at times 😂 But knowing that she started writing this at 16 helps. Plus, the way she rewrote and totally revamped it before publishing only deserves applause 👏🏻 She took this original work and made it 10 times better and developed everything, especially her writing, into something amazing. This is going to be long and I don’t know if anyone will even read the whole thing, but I have a lot of thoughts about this so here we go!

When I first started reading this it was simply out of curiosity to see how much changed between the early draft on FictionPress and the published books. I actually had no idea that this was SO LONG and that Sarah wrote this over the course of 5 years. I thought that what had been published on FP was just Throne of Glass and maybe some of Crown of Midnight (obviously not with those titles yet) but this was pretty much the first 3-4 books of the series.

Part 1: This is essentially Throne of Glass with some parts of Crown of Midnight. I was actually surprised at how different some parts of the plot were, as I went into it thinking it was more or less the same as the published TOG but probably less developed. However, it was quite different. The competition aspect is still there but most of the details are not the same. I didn’t realize at first that this part had so many things from Crown of Midnight so there are things that happened earlier than I expected. To be honest, I didn’t really like any of the characters 😅 They are actually older than they are in the published version but since Sarah wrote this as a teenager, they think and behave as, well, teenagers—and very selfish, arrogant, shallow, vain, silly teens at that. Celaena is still a little bit like this in the published first book, but she definitely had more depth added to her character. Chaol is also pretty similar in attitude but is quite bland in this part. Anuksun (Nehemia) was way different and I can easily tell why her character was rewritten for the published version. Dorian…. I kind of hated him 😂 He had none of the redeeming qualities that are present in the books. So basically all the depth and complexity of the characters and plot (the plot truly only focuses on the competition and romance in this part) that we have in the published books are seriously lacking here.

Part 2: This is sort of Heir of Fire, but it’s veryyy different from the published book we know. This is also where the whole Cinderella retelling part comes in, though probably not how you’d expect. There are characters and a storyline that are completely absent from the finished series, and I can understand why they were cut out since they don’t add much to the actual plot. The most surprising part was Maeve’s role in the story and how she’s a benevolent queen rather than cruel and evil. Another surprising aspect was having a POV from Galan Ashryver and having Celaena actually encounter him multiple times. This might have been something worth leaving in the story, but since HOF is heavily focused on Celaena’s character development and some key turning points in the plot, I get why it was left out. Honestly, this whole part was quite boring. It just dragged on and on. A lot of it seemed pointless, and I’m glad so much was changed before publishing. Once again, most of the characters just act silly and kind of dumb 🙃 Raonn is fairly similar to Rowan but his character is much less important in this so he’s never fully developed. I already knew Raonn (Rowan) didn’t end up with Aelin in this version, but it was still kind of weird to read. Also, the amount of male characters who are “in love” with Celaena/Aelin is absurd 🫠

Part 3: This is basically Queen of Shadows, but weirdly enough it was the shortest part. And I think it was my least favorite. That might be due to the fact that I was pretty much ready to be done with this story and get back to the published version I’m used to 😅 I just found myself really annoyed with almost all of the characters except maybe Chaol and Raonn. I can see how it worked in this original version for Aelin to end up with Dorian, but I found their relationship very lackluster. Even in this version, Aelin had more chemistry and connection with Chaol and Raonn than she did with Dorian. I guess the whole Prince Charming thing just needed to be played out. The romantic relationships are definitely some of the better things that were changed before publishing. As well as a lot of the characters and their personalities. I’m glad Thaelius was removed entirely because he was pretty unbearable the whole time. And Aedion needed a good punch to the face several times. He’s much more likable in the actual series. All of the conflicts were solved very quickly and easily, which made them less believable and hard to care about.

Well, this review is now insanely long and most of it is just ramblings, so I’ll end with this: I’m glad that I was able to read this story in its earlier form and see just how far the original idea and Sarah’s writing has come. This was pretty silly and annoying at times, but I still enjoyed reading it for the most part. It also makes me appreciate the published version so much more, especially knowing all the changes that were made. Props to Sarah and her editors, etc., for taking this idea and turning it into a truly incredible series 🙌🏻

Reading this was fascinating because most readers don’t get the opportunity to read the original, unedited versions of the book(s) they fell in love reading. It was so cool to be able to read the actual original version of Throne of Glass. It was so interesting to see how different it was overall but to also see the seeds for parts of the actual published series. I really enjoyed reading this. I won’t lie and say that I wished there was more of a relationship between Dorian and Celaena in the actual series instead of Choal so this was able to give that to me and I really enjoyed that. Even though she wrote this so young there were some parts (a good bit which didn’t make it to the actual series) that were so poignant and really moved me. Pieces on me wish that some of those pieces made it to the actual series but I’m glad I was able to read this and get those scenes. TOG is one of my favorite series and will always be special to me and I’m glad I was able to see its beginnings in such a cool way.

I loved part 1 more than TOG. I love Celaena and Dorian.

I didn't enjoy part 2 as much because of the Cinderella re-telling. I'm glad Celaena loved Sam in the actual series. It built character. She was just heartless towards him here.

I liked how the first draft focused on Aelin. As opposed to the published version, which focused on side characters I didn't care about. Thankfully, none of them existed here. I also liked Choal MUCH MUCH more in the first draft. I disliked him in the actual series. I will say, however, I liked Celaena/Aelin better in the published version.

I appreciate SJM’s growth as a writer and understand her to decision to make Rowaelin endgame in the actual series. I just have a MAJOR soft spot for 💖💗💕 Doraelin 💕💗💖. They have that be-all and end-all type of love.

It's the kind of book you read when you don't want to start anything else, because you don't want to have to familiarise yourself with anything new, or when you're in a reading slump. I don't think it's legal to read this, but due to a friend having been around when this book was online, and this friend having copied and pasted each chapter for when they didn't have internet (they printed a lot of it too, they were dedicated)
Either way, I didn't hate it, in fact at times I found myself enjoying it, but I completely understand the changes the author made.

I have to say, I really enjoyed seeing SJM’s growth as an author and her original ideas for characters. Her worldbuilding and character development literally exploded. But it is really amazing to see her 16 year old mind at work and I still enjoyed the journey.

I don't want to add any spoilers because there were many differences that i believe you deserve the right to go, "ahah!" and "oh, what?!" to. I loved this original version. Finding that Sarah started this when she was 16 years old somehow makes it better. She got me to almost yell at some fictional characters and laugh almost hysterically at certain situations. I feel that says a lot about her great storytelling ability. I may be biased because this ending was my preferred ending, but for those that loved the Throne of Glass series, this original is definitely a must-read... if only to hold on to our favorite characters for a little bit longer.

Is this book makes me realise how they story came to be.
Let's see what narrative wise has changed. Of course there's the odd name change, DeHavilliard, Tresien(Terrasen), Lithaen Gordaina(Lillian), Chaol Wydrael(Chaol Westfall), Kaltain R’ompier, Anuksun Ytger (Nehemia), Eyputiusunn/Eyputiusunnians(Otterland), Elentulyai (Elentiya), Maurgon (Rolfe), Evaelien(Evalin Galathynius), Dora’nelle(Doranelle), Symeth (Sam), Raonn Whitehorn(Rowan), Marnaia (Marion Lochan), Renaril (I think this is Rifthold)and there's whole places I've got no idea about like, Belaegyr (it might be the cove), Finntierland (no idea), Moselian Port (in Wendlyn) somewhere) even small places like Pigeons Tavern, Hazel Bush Square, Peregrinno(town in Wendlyn), Gulf of Baello(wend?), Üpel(2nd largest town), Azuria(East Trasien town), Kiras(town in w), Banjali(Adarlan??), Mecherta(also), Azurian Coast(also), /// Surprisingly Amaroth's name hasn't changed, neither has Noll or Morath. Maeve exists, but she’s like only queen of the Fae, also she's good. And closely related to Aelin. She looks the same but gives off more peaceful vibes. Endovier, being changed from 2yrs to 1. Whole backgrounds have been given more detail.

And Celaena cannot possibly gain more names. Apart from small spelling she full picks up Ari Mauve when she's disguised as a servant. That's gotta hint at something? Elentulyai Hamel! Everything is a reminder at this point. Also Aelin of Adarlan. Aelin of Trasien. 'Aelin Champion of Good! Aelin Champion of Everything!'(she gave herself those two-). Aelin the Great. Ele of Dora'nelle. Queen of Trasien. Adarlan's Assassin. Queen of Glass. Aelin Castlebreaker. The fact that I know I'm missing some is concerning.

Whole characters being added Madam Tul’rouse, Umel, Bruno (3 Rando assassins, Sy might have evolved into Sam?), Leighanna (Wendyln maid?), Luca(wendlyn farm han), Stephaenya (wendlyn maid), Cindrillion (literally just Cinderella), Marghenna (step sis), Joline (step sis), Fanur (friend of Galan),
Also the event Beltaen, the food paestia(just pasta), Colwir (good general), Gmord (bad general), Thaelius Glorwynn (betrothed to Aelin-), Raal Hynter(nice jouster), Hen (apart of Triasen), Quelin (also), Isalina (also), Nichole DeLemanscon(Dorian's betrothed), Vuljad(idk it was just a mention), Will Lochan, Kalyn Lochan, Jaclyn Grafalas (knock off Yrene)

The competition only featured women, Dorian has no little brother (which now makes sense on why he was a bit more of a throw away character, he wasn't needed),
Celaena is waayyyyy more petty and crude in this version. She was arrogant in TOG, she's literally just an gloating ass in this book. She'll literally hiss and snarl at anyone who steps too close. -Forgive me, foul scowl.- Also she likes to ramble though being closed off and nonchalant? Idk how that works. It kind contradicts itself.

This book casts her as tough and intelligent(though just a girl who wants to be a free spirit at its core). While this was true for TOG, it eventually bubbled down to a girl who loved chocolates and lollies, play piano and read endlessly. I cannot see this girl under here. It was even mentioned she didn't know how to play anything. So she's expanded character WHOLE bunch.
It was fun seeing (basically) the events of TOG through Dorian's eyes. Also he is incredibly selfish. 'Assasin have feelings? What a thought!' And Chaol is.. odd. He's possessive, loyal, distant and untrusting. Again, justified as this girl is crazy, but he doesn't trust her actions moving forward. Like one bit. Also I'm so glad SJM cut their ch out, they have terribly male headspace's. It's honestly disgusting. It made sense to me that Chaol was the one that suggested the pup be given to Celaena, Dorian is too selfish and would rather kill the thing. Dorian is literally just selfish and a brat. He thinks Celaena is needed to complete him, even if she doesn't love him.
Also what's the deal with the mother dog only be called a bitch? Everything I read it, I read it like "👹BITCH👹", chill out on the poor pregnant dog.
Kaltain is unredeemable in this version.
You can clearly see the ideas she expanded on and decided to cut. There's few chapters where it's almost exactly like the final book, but others I'm asking if it's the same book.
There’s also been Celaena’s issue with her weight cut out. It’s rather disturbing for it to be mentioned like everytime she eats and then some. Like a whole issue with her being unable to fit in a dress? I was gonna list the amount, but there's literally so much I can't- SJM wrote this when she was a young woman, she said she connected deeply to Aelin, so it makes sense <\3

Also I know Rowan doesn't exist in this book, but Roann does. Same traits. HOWEVER. We can see how closely related they are as of compared to TOG, where they are said to just be distantly related. Mab and Mora (Maeve's sisters), Mora is Aelin's great grandmother Aelin (1/8th Fae), Mab had the Galathynius line and Mira had the Ashryver. Roann is just a nephew to Maeve. Galan is great nephew to Maeve. Why is this just getting worse- (he's her second cousin. It was suggested to Aelin that she could choose to be with) Aedion exists, he's Aelin's first cousin. Having Evalin be his aunt.

And- CHOAL AND CELAENA HAS SEX??? WHAT??? Crazy.
She's only had it with 2 people, Symeth and Chaol. Cute ig, I don't think we were given a number before.
Oh! I think it's such a cute detail how SJM uses fiery words to describe Celaena and how she vies the world. Also cold ones. Idk if you have firepower's you'd tend to see things in hot and cold. // Scratch that she doesn't have any fire powers 😭
"For remembrance, as a reminder" what does that even mean-??? It's like the most repeated phrase.

Raal needs a whole fanbase. He's charismatic, kind and stands up for the people in his life. It's SUCH a shame he's not in the final copy. I reckon if I got to bring one character over (traits and all), it'd be Raal.
I like Roaan and Aelin's relationship. It's like loyal mentor, best friend. I was kind of scared we wouldn't see him again once we left the other continent, but when Galan, Raal and Roaan rocked up- I WAS SCREAMINGGG!! I was so happy!! I just knew they were the perfect bunch to fix whatever the fuck everyone else wrecked. I mean Aelin was like deteriorating and no one even realised it. And Roaan!! He was not having her be unhappy. He saw it and did something IMMEDIATELY. Tattling on those witches, and setting the records straight.
It was SO wrong for Aedion and Thaelius (I really fucking hate him.) to interfere, it wasn't even interfering, it was literally just blocking all chance at love between Aelin and Dorian. Thaelius did the most (and worst) of it, lying and cheating, while Aedion went along with it for his gains. He wanted for his cousin to have a smooth transition into being queen, something she was curling in on herself from, and thought it was best for her just to be with Thaelius. He did take a 20-page note to stop them from getting back together, which was completely unacceptable. Cause remove just a single one of their lies, contradictions, and stoppages, and these two would have run to each other. They literally caused their void. So, safe to say, I was cheering on Aelin when she fought Aedion. Hell yeah girl!! Beat them to a pulp!!

Random things of mention: Glamasil’s Orb(anti-mortal weapon that created humans?), why is Time capital, and Will, and Death, Afterlife, Hell, Fae, Goddess, Valg, Death's Door, Great Goddess, Life, Talk, Clan, Wolf Tribes, Halls, Holds, Bonded, Wolves, Draied, Shifted, Roc, Satyr, Despair, Hatred(idk they were referred to as them), See, Saw, Seen, Trial, Summons, Tor, Spidersilk, NSEW?, Heavens Above, Land of Darkness, Hounds of Hell, Holy Land of Undying Love, Littha, Vision, Crone, Gods Above, all needing capitals? Idk I just thought I should compile them. They could still be cannon.

I did find it odd TOG, QOS are done in 20% of the first part. Leaving 80% for…. Idek. It wasn’t HOF thats for sure.
50% in for 1st part and we are already in war?? Gosh this thing is gon wrap up.

Man I hated the Dorian ch's while she was overseas, I'm sorry. I enjoy seeing him but like... Celaena is in a war and this man is just like '🥺👉👈my dad yelled at me'.

Also I like how this book... like wasn't trying to conceal much lore? Like from this book, I now know Whitehorn is to celebrate how they killed off white dragons. I mean that's hella interesting, I do get why it wasn't in the final copy, and may not be cannon, but it gives us a grasp of how powerful Fae are.

Yayyyy Fleetfoot has changed!! My pupperr!!

For someone said to be so powerful , Aelin does not use her powers a lot. 2/3 of the time she didn't even have it. Making sense, but what did she do? Just fly around for a bit to see how much flowers she has because no one else can fly around? I know she didn't really have any reason to use her after the king was defeated, and the best we got was like a dress change, but this girl is like leaking power. Also, she doesn't have fire powers. It's just like raw power at this point. "Fae magick"

There are so many moments I love, and so many things would have tabbed. But I literally can't even show them all. This is 2,500 pages. 587 notes on Kindle. Crazy.

I hate myself for it, but I'd love to read this again. It's cringe and has got more useless content than anything else, but I love it for that. I'm a young reader myself, and I just find it so interesting someone was able to write this (starting at 16), and write so many words. I really liked this book. I really want to be able to go through it once more, reading all my thoughts, and enjoy it once again.

It was nice to have some extended insight into this alternate/original TOG, soon it was crystal clear that SJM wrote it so long ago, as her first steps and with a somewhat juvenile view of life and love.

I enjoyed thoroughly the retelling aspects of this, and was particularly thrilled to read more of Celaena's time in Wendlyn, watching her helping Luca and Cindrillion, feeling comfortable with who she is as a whole and having real friends for the first time, while many little variants of her personality collide to make a queen out of her. Despite that, I sometimes wanted to yell at our girl, for being so simple-minded while she has the literal fate of her country on her shoulders.

It was weird to see some characters behaving differently from what is now cannon, but I really liked Chaol in here and also shockingly found myself liking Maeve (and then distrusting her again because I JUST can't forget all we already read).

Rowan has my heart however he is depicted, so no news there. But there was a point where I was rooting for every male we crossed paths with, it was funny. What can I say? The whole SJM male population has me on a chokehold

This book is one of the best I've ever read!
Despite it not being published officially, I felt more immersed and attached to the characters than I did in the final series. I was always more of a Celaena/Dorian shipper, and this fulfilled it to its fullest. It kept the key aspects and was so interesting to see the way the series we all love could've gone.

Absolutely amazing and in love with this book!

I never write reviews but if you are a huge Throne of Glass fan, I would read this. Even though the first 200-300 pages were very similar to Throne of Glass, I can tell you that the rest is much different and definitely worth your time. I loved reading what Throne of Glass almost was but it mostly just made me want to do a re-read of the series. So, if you are a huge fan I would highly suggest reading Queen of Glass.

The original version of the Throne of Glass series has so many parts to love! Petty, girly, vain Aelin is so much fun, the characters actually being in their mid20s is a welcomed departure from the typical late teens chosen one, and of course Doraelin being the ending pair that I really wanted from TOG
