Avenge Her #1

Secrets Kill

Rate this book
Everyone has secrets, but sometimes… secrets kill.
I didn’t know I had a sister until I walked into a crime scene and saw my own lifeless face staring back at me. Horrified, I still did my job and collected evidence to nail the men responsible.

Despite overwhelming proof that a group of rich Miami elites had tortured and murdered her for kicks, it turned out no one cared about the life of one high-end escort. The very system I worked for and trusted failed me.

And it failed her.

They. Walked. Free.

In the face of such injustice, a fire for revenge started deep in my gut.

Turns out, I’m not alone. Both the sexy case detective and my fellow CSI will do anything to help me, not to mention my sister’s twin friends. With their support, I’ve formed a plan to catch and punish her killers.

They deserved to pay for what they did.

One by one, I'll uncover their secrets.

And then? I will avenge her.

Secrets Kill is the first book in the Avenge Her series. Fans of Dexter, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and Single White Female will love this mix of mystery, police thriller, and dark romance. Reader be warned: This is a slow-build reverse harem romance, that includes murder, foul language, and sexual content.

Hi! I'm Laurel, I love all things fantasy, magic, and sci-fi, so you may find that my books have surprising twists that you didn't see coming.

I'm an avid traveller and adventurer, and I find my travels inspire stories I want to write! I have an amazing daughter and we currently live in the shadows of the Smoky Mountains. I love a good craft cocktail, sunny beaches and snowy slopes, and a cozy chair with a nearby fireplace for the perfect read.

DNF at 32%. This book is not for me. If you are going to have a polyamorous romance, I want the partners to know each other and have some sort of agreement about sharing before she gets with any one of them. Otherwise, it just feels gross and like cheating.

If you ever wanted Dexter to be reimagined as a why-choose romance, this book is for you! What an incredible ride! This was a one-day binge-read. I was completely pulled into the story.

Crime scene investigator, Kate Walker, learns of her sister’s existence the day she is called to process the scene of her murder. When the five men who committed the murder go free, despite the overwhelming evidence against them, she refuses to permit the injustice to stand. Even if she must take their punishment into her own hands.

This is a slow build and slower burn, why-choose romance. Expect a stronger emphasis on the plot and relationships than outright smut. The s3x scenes are more sensual, almost worshipful of the FMC, though still explicit. There is some great flirtation between Kate and her sister’s former roommates, the twins Diego and Miguel. (And twins are always hot!)

I loved the character of Kate and how she gained more depth as the book progressed. By the end, we were teased with some secrets she started revealing to the men who supported her, though she never fully opened up, even to us, the readers. It makes me want more from her, to hear her whole story.

This book ends on a doozy of a cliffhanger. Book 2 cannot get here soon enough. I need to know!

I highly recommend this book for fans of the show Dexter, CSI, or police thrillers. As always, check CW/TW before reading.

Me, having watched away too many cop shows growing up: M’am you do not wear personal/identifiable jewelry when committing a crime! Amateur! 😤😆

This books summarized in one word: underwhelming

In all honesty though, only the latter third or so of the book was really interesting. I’m personally not crazily invested in any of the relationships. They just aren’t doing it for me. I am kind of curious about the cliffhanger we were left on so if I check out the sequel it’ll be purely for that reason.

moral ambiguity at its most relatable

Whatttttt that was a crazy good cliffhanger right there!

I love this story so much! Growing up watching CSI with my mom (and developing my first serious celebrity crush on Greg) this story was right up my alley in a nostalgic way! Except way less appropriate for a teenager lol

Kate is a very interesting character. I love her development over the storyline. Going from a kind of plain wallflower to someone with a touch of confidence and that fierce determination that pairs so deliciously with moral ambiguity! Her relationships with the men around her are also extremely interesting given her lack of romantic emotional depth. It certainly gave her the Dexter effectiveness.

Preston is absolutely my favorite! The twin and Royce are interesting characters and hot in their own right, but Preston! The devoted cinnamon roll with a quirky persona. I’m hooked!

I can’t wait to read the next book!

The minute I read the blurb I knew I had to read this book, and I was right. It’s like a reverse harem crime show and I wish I could actually watch it on TV.

One thing I love about this author is how she focuses on the characters so we can really get to know them. Each character has a distinctive personality, a history and becomes more complex as the story continues. They aren’t just a name on the page, you know who is doing and thinking what. I’m hoping we’ll have more POVs of other characters as the series continues, I feel like we were just given a taste.

This is a slow burn, very slow, but the tension and start of something big is there. I’m not that surprised with how other series by the author have been written, and she does the tension quite well.

After that…killer cliffhanger, I cannot wait to see what happens next.

I think everyone has felt injustice at one point or another in their lives and the desire to take matters into their own hands to right the wrongs done in this world. This book is exactly that!
Kate is like a female version of Dexter with her own little dark passenger just waiting to come out and play. For the most part, she seems like a pretty level headed woman, work driven and a little antisocial at times, but still normal on surface level. Sometimes it only takes one thing, or in Kate's case--5 people, to really tip someone over the edge. To see Kate going from a quiet, workaholic to a more confident self asserted woman with a darker side of her own was so much fun. She's a vigilante, going after her sister's murderers and you have to admire her for that. If she doesn't do it, no one else is going to, and I have to say that I'm here to see her take them down one by one. This book was just a taste of what she is capable of, so I'm excited to see how her plans work out in future books, especially with her guys now involved and how this book ended on a jaw dropping cliffhanger. It's hard to tell how the next book will start, but I think that it's going to be a wild ride regardless. What I'm really interested in finding out though as this series progresses is if getting justice for her sister will be enough to quell the darkness Kate has inside her. Will she be done after #5 or will her body count continue to grow?

This was such an incredible first book to a series! I think the only thing I found disappointing in this book was that probably 95 percent or more of this book was in Kate's point of view. Now, I have absolutely no problem with that at all. However, seeing her name listed under every chapter heading and even when scenes switched when it was still in her point of view kept getting my hopes up for more points of view to come up from the guys. I believe there was only one in this book, not even a full chapter, and I'm very much hoping for there to be more than that in the next book. Everything else was amazing though, so I wouldn't let this deter you from reading because Laurel always does an incredible job with her books.

Let’s kick things off by saying that the cover is absolutely stunning! I mean, I’m a total sucker for a gorgeous cover—anyone who claims you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover is just trying to hide their bad taste!

Now, let’s dive into Secrets Kill, the first installment in the Avenge Her series by Laurel Night. We follow Kate, a CSI officer, who gets called to a murder scene. Now, keep in mind that Kate was adopted and was an only child [as far as she knew]. She arrives at the scene with her CSI partner Preston and Detective Royce, only to be greeted by the shocking sight of her own lifeless face. Turns out she had a sister named Autumn she never knew existed. Talk about family reunion gone wrong!

In court, they present the evidence along with the five murderers, but to Kate’s horror, the judge lets them walk free. This ignites a dark urge within her to take justice into her own hands and avenge her sister. Things escalate when girls start turning up dead after the Miami Five are released, and Kate is convinced these guys are up to no good again. Enter the twins Miguel and Diego Vasquez, Autumn’s roommates, and of course, Preston, Kate’s trusty CSI sidekick.

The mystery was the only okay part, especially that cliffhanger that left me hanging like a piñata at a kid's party. However, that’s about where my enjoyment ended. The chemistry? Nonexistent. The smut? Let’s just say it was more “meh” than “wow.” I didn’t get those butterflies or the urge to throw the book across the room when the main characters interacted. Sure, there was a smidgen of chemistry between Miguel and Kate, but it was like finding a single french fry at the bottom of the bag—nice, but not enough to satisfy.

Still, if you’re a fan of Dexter with a twist of “why choose” and you’re in it for the mystery, Secrets Kill might just be your cup of tea!

How did I end up being chauffeured around by handsome, impeccably dressed men who dropped a month's worth of my wages on panties on a random Sunday afternoon?

*4,5 star review

"Secrets Kill" is the start of the "Avenge Her" series, and it's one of those series where it takes some time to fully discover all different layers to grab the full story. This series definitely has Dexter vibes, but it seems to go deeper than that. I'm left with a lot of questions, about Kate, but also about Preston and the twins. The author gives us a very interesting character development, where I feel like we only touched the surface with a lot of them so far...

I like Kate as an fmc; I can relate to her on a certain level and I enjoyed watching her found her inner strength throughout this first book. I'm a fan of slowly developing harems and guessing who will eventually be a part of it, and this series gives me that. So far I haven't really connected to any of the men, maybe because it feels like we only touched the surface with their character development so far. I do hope to see more of the men's POV in the next book(s). The way every chapter starts with the name suggested more chapters in multiple POV, so that's perhaps the reason why I felt a little bereft. Still, I really loved this book and I'm looking forward to find out what will happen next!

Great start of a new contemporary RH series, and I can highly recommend it to the lovers of all crime series.

I’m sad to say this book was a DNF for me. The book was recommended and after reading the blurb I was quite interested in the storyline. I’m a bit nit-picky when it comes to editing and content so thats where most of my issues stem from.

Here are a few examples:

The first few chapters had many instances where the tense kept changing from past to present. Sentences are choppy at times like they’re incomplete thoughts which made paragraphs hard to follow. Some descriptions were repetitive (example: describing a murder multiple times, whether the crime scene or physical wounds, and used either the exact or very similar words). I had a few other issues but those stood out the most.

For the storyline content piece example:

There is a female bully named Brianna who works as a detective in the same precinct as Kate, the FMC. We are introduced to her in Chapter 2 and Kate describes how she’s had previous interactions with her but yet continued to engage with Brianna knowing what the outcome would be. I found it odd Kate still tolerated the bully behavior when she was the one who tried to stand up for Brianna when other cops were harassing her. It’s contradictory to the little bit of Kate’s personality I picked up on.

I’m giving the book three stars because there is a lot of potential. Many of the issues can be fixed with either a line editor and/or content editor but it’s clear many others enjoyed the book. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t for me.

Five friends stand trial, five murderers walk free despite the hard evidence against them. Leaving Kate, a CSI with dark whispers in her head demanding justice and revenge. As Kate goes undercover to dig deeper into the glamourous lives of the high-end escorts seeking answers, she discovers more than she was expecting.

Secrets Kill was a thoroughly enjoyable read hooking me in from the first paragraph. Kate the FMC is a workaholic with little social life and doesn’t have much self-worth outside of her job. With one friend turned lover and two sexy twins that encourage, pamper and adore her, she starts to see herself in a new light when looking in the mirror. With these new found developing relationships and growing confidence Kate is ready to seek her revenge and let the dark whispers take control.

Laurel has done an excellent job introducing us to a world filled with Miami’s elite covering their true natures with money and glitz. The ending left me hanging and very excited for book 2. I am really looking forward to seeing Kate extract her justice. Kates character has already won me over so I’m hoping to see more POV’s from the men with the chance to let their personalities shine in the next instalment of the series.

Secrets Kill is a strong start to what is going to be an amazing series!

What a fantastic start to this series. Kate is something else. She is kind of not sure of herself but yet is also super strong at points. She is definitely interesting and I really hope we learn more about her and her past. We definitely see growth throughout this first book and it is great to see. The men we don’t learn to much about them and I hope we do. The little we do see has me intrigued for more. This story has so much drama and suspense in it. This is such an amazing element to this story. It is definitely a fantastic thriller that has you on the edge of your seat. The story is a slow burn reverse harem and I am definitely a fan of these. It is extremely well written and developed. Laurel Night always seems to have fantastic stories that extremely well written. This is no different. It ends in a major cliffhanger that has you saying oh my goodness. I am super excited to see what happens next. This is a must read and doesn’t disappoint.

Secrets Kill ☆☆☆☆

This was such a fantastic start to a series I cannot wait to read more of.

Kate is a crime scene investigator working for the miami police department, when she gets called to a scene, the body shocks her as its herself staring back at her.

Working to try and figure out who killed her sister Autumn kind of under the radar, had me so hooked, but more girls bodies are showing up with the same MO, and no one wants to put two and two together and figure out what's happening.

5 guys are guilty, they all walk away free men.

Honestly this was such an interesting read for me, I loved her friendships with her team. I'll be honest and say I don't completely trust the twins yet. But I do love how they've helped her find herself and live herself again.

The ONLY thing that left me from rating this higher is I was DYING to get multiple POV's.

Great start and I cannot wait to see where the series goes.

This book was an emotional and really fun read. I was really lucky to also beta read this book and let me say that it is enjoyable. Kate is a really strong heroine. The things she goes through this book are basically designated to break a person. However, she does not break at all. Instead, she is strong and just goes with the flow. The suspense in this book is awesome. The mystery is real and dangerous. I liked that Kate does a great job expressing and showing how difficult it is to go through trauma. The romance in this book is wonderful. I love that it was paced appropriately. There isn't too many sex scenes and that makes sense because of what happens to Kate. The RH is fun. I liked that Diego and Manuel really respected Kate. They were there for her. Her three love interests are awesome and their individual bond is really good. The book does end on a cliffy, but I cannot wait for the next book in the series. Great start to an awesome series.

OMG?! This was such an amazing book?! I could not put it down, it had everything; mystery, suspense, action, romance and just enough spice to cozy up to. I loved every character we met; Kate was such a bad@ss heroine who loved doing her job and getting justice. And, her men that we meet...omg....I don't even know if I could love twins even more than I could now. Miguel & Damien were perfect, each having their own personalities and their own reasons why they loved & cared for her....it was beautiful. And, Preston, the younger one who loves and cares so deeply that he would do anything for her. It just makes my knees weak just thinking about them and I can't get enough. Seriously, the storyline was amazing, a page-turner right from the start and entertaining right to the last page. I definitely recommend this book!! And, I cannot wait for the next.

DNF chapter 15 (33%). I really liked the premise, and the beginning intrigued me. I think this had a lot of potential, but I’m sad to say it just wasn’t working for me. It started strong but fizzled out. I didn’t feel any connection or chemistry between the MCs. And it felt like there was a lot of unnecessary scenes idk. I was expecting there to be more action and suspense. I know this was slow burn and probably building up to things both relationship-wise and plot/action-wise, but there wasn’t enough that had happened to keep me engaged and interested. Instead, I became bored and uninvested but kept reading, hoping I’d find the same energy the beginning had, but unfortunately, I did not. And after the first steamy scene, where I felt no connection between the MCs, I decided to cut my losses and DNF. Just wasn’t for me 🤷🏻‍♀️

I couldn’t put this book down I loved every single bit of it! It has serious dexter vibes and I’m all for it.

Kate works for CSI, and on a case she finds out that she had a sister, who was murdered. The people who were guilty, walked away scotch free and she wants justice.

Not only was this book about finding her sister’s killers, but also finding ways to love herself and to be her own person. The character growth was amazing and you get to see her finally shine.

I can’t wait to see more relationship growth between her men. We definitely got some spicy scenes, but as she continues to be more comfortable she will be open up even more. I loved this book and I cannot wait for more!!

Kate's life is thrown into a whirlwind when she arrives at a crime scene and sees her lifeless face staring back at her. It turns out she has a sister she didn't know about and now she has committed herself to solving her mu***r and getting justice for her. The five men who were responsible are allowed to go free; she then teams up with a detective, another CSI, and her sister's friends to get revenge and take down those responsible. We sort of only scrape the surface of all of the secrets the characters are keeping from each other and us as readers. This book is more slow-burn and emphasizes the plot and the relationships developing between the group. I personally cannot wait to read the next book!

A great thriller from a great author. Her writing always pulls me into her books, and this one was not a disappointment. When Kate Walker went into work, and out on a call to do her job as a CSI, she never expected to find out she had a sister. As an adopted child, she’d never found out anything about her real parentage, so finding someone that looked exactly like her, was a shock. As you follow Kate’s story, it leads you through her journey of self realization, and investigation as she tries to find justice for her sisters killers. With sexy love scenes, strong characters, action, and revenge this tale pulls you in and makes you ready for book 2 as soon as you read the last word of book one.

Kate is a CSI with a slightly dark past, trying to get to the bottom of her sister's murder. It's a slow burn which took me a while to get into, but by the last third I was on an anxious tension built spiral of stress! Ends on a cliffhanger so do be warned. It is a Why Choose romance so there are multiple love interests. The spice is quite low in this book, as it focuses on the plot and building tension, but I do think it will ramp up in further books.

🔞 This is an 18 + read due to spicy content and dark triggering themes. Trigger warnings can be found on the Amazon listing.

I received an arc of this book and am leaving an honest review voluntarily.

This book had me excited to start the series and for good reason. With so much suspense and build up in this first book it leaves you with more questions, than answers. Kate is a CSI worker, who learns she had a sister is the worst way possible. Then to experience her killers walk away. She has moments where she's not sure of herself, than becomes a badass in other situations and owns it. I can't wait to learn more about her and her past. Also to learn more about the guys she's starting to surround her self with. I can't wait for the next book and would definitely recommend reading the start of this series!

Great read

Love Kate our FMC who only discovers she had a sister when processing her crime scene, she endeavours to find out more about her life. Seinfeld her killers go free despite their DNA being on her sisters body ignites her thirst for vengeance.
She gets drawn into her sisters life and friends as she delves deeper. The twins sound hot and now with men at her workplace getting involved the tension is ramping up. This is a fantastic story, we all hate it when rich entitled guys get away with murder so I’m definitely cheering for Kate. Here’s hoping she continues on her revenge and spicy reinvention in the next book. Loving the plot twists in this book.

Do we all have darkness within ...

Wow, what a twisted, suspenseful and vengeful storyline and I absolutely loved it. The injustice that some victims may not have anyone advocating for them has CSI Kate Walker doubling down on wanting to help. In her attempt to learn more about her murdered sister, she falls down a rabbit hole of self-discovery. Along come multiple guys that seemingly don't mind sharing her affections. The tension is delicious. I enjoy the occasional crime book but combine it with a RH undertone, makes it even better. The cliffy is leaving me at the edge of my seat so I'm hoping it'll be all good for Kate and her guys.

If you love crime shows you will love this book!

I stayed up way to late to finish this book and devastated I now have to wait!! This had the combo of two of my favorite shows CSI and Dexter. And it starts out with Kate finding out the men who killed her sister (that she never met) getting away with it. After that she wants to know more about her sister and her life. As time goes on she starts coming up with plans for revenge. Let me tell you I was excited once that twist happened! If this continues further down the path of more like Dexter I have a feeling this will be my new favorite series and to top off its RH❤

Intriguing

I've been eagerly anticipating the release of this book. It's both a contemporary RH, which it feels like there aren't that many of, and it's got a CSI vibe to it which I thoroughly love. What you can expect to get with this new series is mystery, suspense, intrigue, and the introduction of several fascinating characters. Triggered by a life changing moment, we watch the fmc, who is initially closed off and reclusive begin to blossom with her potential and a will to start experiencing life, no longer content to blend into the background. The guys are an unusual mix of personalities and they don't start off as friends or already knowing each other, indicating this is going to be a slower build to the group. The ending is a bit of a cliffhanger but not terrible. Looking forward to seeing how this series continues.
