I have three books from my reading list that I’ve been waxing lyrical about for the past few weeks; so much so that they’re sitting in the ‘top five recommendations for 2022’ and my husband is probably traumatised from the amount of times I’ve used the word ‘phenomenal’ when talking about them. One of these books is from another exceptional SPRU author. The second book is written by a renowned historical romance writer, and the third is this book: ‘Neanderthal Seeks Duchess', by up-and-coming writer, Laney Hatcher.
Her absolutely dazzling debut.
‘Neanderthal Seeks Duchess' is honestly nothing short of breath-taking; offering up an impressive and exhilarating regency take on Penny Reid’s contemporary story, ‘Neanderthal Seeks Human’. Yet, rather than re-live the exact same story all over again- just in a separate time period- author Laney Hatcher has made this story completely her own. Bewitching readers with an alluring spread of intelligence, passion, charm, wit, passion and romance. Did I mention passion?
Lady Jane is our adorably quirky bluestocking heroine, who inadvertently catches the attention of the dashing and enigmatic ‘Q’. Seemingly mismatched, these two personalities form an unlikely friendship, one that begins to simmer with tension and longing. A wondrous and torturous slow-burn romance that culminates in something sweet, sumptuous and utterly sensational.
I’m not going to go into minute detail about every aspect of the book in this review because I don’t want to spoil anyone’s enjoyment of the story. You don’t want me telling you how good the chocolate cake is; describing all the flavours and textures. You want to eat the cake yourself to experience it.
And ‘Neanderthal Seeks Duchess’ is an experience.
It was wonderful to see the template of Penny’s NSH used here, to pick out the little easter eggs peppered throughout, the teasers and resemblances to some of our favourite characters from the modern KITC world. But make no mistake, this book is very much Laney Hatcher’s.
You might think it would be difficult to discern a debut writer’s signature flair, yet within this book I can already see certain striking elements, that make me believe we’re only seeing the beginning of something exceptionally beautiful from this writer. From the multifaceted personalities and their interactions, to the deeper (sometimes complicated) connections, and the arousing and provoking speech used throughout, as well as the melodic flow of the storyline, ‘Neanderthal Seeks Duchess’, is an exquisite piece of historical romance writing.
Even if you find yourself not entirely enamoured of historical love stories, there are countless elements within this book that could have you changing your mind by the end of it. You’ll simply be swept up by the romance and joy bursting from each page.

So disappointed. For lovers of quality HR: avoid this. Many American authors write really good Regency novels, so the problem here is simply that this author does not know how to do that. Stick to the original- one of my favourite CR stories.

Enchanting from the very first page, Neanderthal Seeks Duchess is the book I didn't know I needed but absolutely cannot live without.
Penny Reid's debut novel Neanderthal Seeks Human is a classic, and famous for starting the incredible Knitting in the City Series and its outstanding spinoff The Winston's Brothers. I didn't know what to expect about having my beloved series reimagined through the lens of another author. Now I can confidently say that these characters are perfect in any context, but having them adapted to historical romance was a stroke of genius.
The little nods to the original novel are everywhere, and finding the clever easter eggs hidden in the text is delightful. However, Laney Hatcher added much of her own ideas, enriching the plot and making this book unputdownable. I loved everything about it and am now completely addicted.
I will anxiously await the adaptations of all books in the London Ladies Embroidery series format.

I am such a huge fan of Penny Reid’s work and the Knitting in the City book series. As soon as I heard there was going to be a “retelling” written of Neanderthal Seeks Human I was on board. I had very high expectations going in and Laney Hatcher did not disappoint. She managed to keep the main points of the original story while flawlessly adapting it to a historical romance. It is not often you see a modern to historical remake but it worked so well.
This book was so delightful, I was grinning from the first chapter. I could not put it down! I love the name changes that the characters are given that reflect the historical era. The book does have some spice to it but not any more than the original.
If you are a fan of the Knitting in the City book series, you will love Neanderthal Seeks Duchess. Even if you have not read Neanderthal Seeks Human, but enjoy historical romance, you will applaud this book's unique plot and fun cast of characters. I hope that we will be getting historical adaptations of all of the Knitting in the City books.
I am amazed that this is Laney Hatcher’s debut book. I can’t wait for her next book that also comes out in May, First To Fall and I look forward to reading more of her work in the future.

Full of all the swoons, a dash of mystery, and punches of humor, you are going to fall head over heels with Neanderthal Seeks Duchess.

This was a new to me author. Historical Romance is rarely written in first person. This was unique and refreshing. Q was a hero I love, so patient and perfect for Jane. The story started off a little slower, but I couldn't put it down in the last half. I definitely plan to continue the series.

April 3, 2022I don't normally gravitate toward historical romance but I had just come off my Bridgerton binge watch and was honestly really curious about this book.
Y'all, I'm so glad I read it. It was absolute perfection. It's obvious the story is about the Janie and Quinn we already know and love, but this "alternate universe" story was just so charming and endearing. I loved it.

I must admit I had no idea how much I'd enjoy a reimagining of Quinn and Janie's story in a historical setting. Lady Jane is still prone to bouts of verbal spewing about anything and everything. Q is attempting to clean up his act after being willfully blind to what he was allowing his men to engage in. They're both a little quirky by the standards of their time and while Q is willing to jump into this thing between them with both feet, Jane is a little more circumspect. She knows the damage her reputation could take and she's hesitant to put herself out there.
But Q is determined and dogged and he woos Jane with his directness and sincerity. Which isn't to say things are easy. Jane's first instinct is to protect herself and that sometimes means running away or hiding herself away to work things out in her head.
That said, Jane's circle of friends are there when she needs someone to lean on. They might not all be great at embroidery, but they're fantastic when it comes to support and advice.
A little gossip, a smidge of danger, a determined lord who isn't about to let the treasure he's discovered slip through his fingers, and a lady who wants it all - love, a partnership, and friendship. Did I know I wanted to see Janie and Quinn stumble all over themselves in a historical setting? I DID NOT. But boy am I pleased with Jane and Q's story!

In keeping with the spirit of the contemporary original, Lainey takes great care to transport us back in time to 19th century London.
Following a similar outline for the original story, Neanderthal Seeks Duchess has the added bonus of Laney’s historical flair, all told in a modern voice.

I loved that their weekly knitting therapy sessions are interpreted as embroidery circle chats, with each of the ladies bringing their unfiltered personalities and support in a time when that was frowned upon.
Janie’s relationship with Quinton (Lord Dashing) is both intriguing and heartwarming. Both are struggling with past familial issues as well as unrealistic expectations from society—and neither one of them plans to conform to either.
Watching them forge their own path while navigating the constraints of the time period and also their personal natures will leave you with a smile on your face more than once throughout the story.
Fans of Penny Reid’s original will love how Neanderthal Seeks Human translates into historical romance, while new readers of Laney Hatcher will love her writing and characterization.
Personally, I can’t wait for another retold story from the series and the sneak peek at the back of the book is a torturous tease knowing that the release date isn’t until the fall!

I am utterly in awe how Laney Hatcher took a beloved book and characters and adapted them into a historical romance. Q and Jane are an absolute delight, and their romance shines bright through the authors writing. Laney did an exceptional job of taking care of Quinn and Janie.
Every time a character entered the story I would rack my brain to find their origin character from Penny’s book. It was an absolute delight. I could not put it down.
If you’re a fan of Penny Reid’s Knitting in the Series and you love Historical Romance, you need to pick this book up. I truly hope we have more in this series, I want to see how the author molds these characters to fit into Victorian England.
This book was an absolute joy to read, and had me smiling from the first to the very last page.
I am utterly in awe how Laney Hatcher took a beloved book and characters and adapted them into a historical romance. Q and Jane are an absolute delight, and their romance shines bright through the authors writing. Laney did an exceptional job of taking care of Quinn and Janie.

4.5🌟s This was a terrific historical take on Neanderthal Seeks Human by Penny Reid. And while this book is meant to be a regency retelling of that story, it totally stands on it’s own. And if you are a Bridgerton fan who likes a little spice with your tea and crumpets, this is the book for you!
It’s been a few years since I’ve read the original book, so I can’t comment on how faithful it is to the book. But I can tell you all the important milestones are there, including a few nods to other books in the series. I do hope we get more!!

I am completely confused as to how I feel about this book.
In some ways it's very clever, it more or less follows the plot of Penny Reid's Neanderthal seeks human but it is regency style.
The changes are mostly clever but I felt a few things didn't work.
An a quilt? When was a quilt known as a quilt...
But in some ways it was a bit weird it was so similar.
There are no intimate scenes other than the Hero and heroine.
Same other woman drama with heroine's sister, plotting.
There was a lot of inner monologue, this is a pet peeve of mine, drives me crazy, we do end up in the heroine's head loads.

Girl posse. Hints of future books as the knitting circle.
HEA.
Epilogue.

I'm going to be in the minority here but I had a hard time getting into this story, partly because of the names being the same as in Neanderthal seeks Human, the too much Penny Reid-like plot, and the too modern side of this historical romance. So yes, I knew from the start that it was an adaptation of the work of Penny Reid but I did not expect so many identical details and therefore to think of the original text while reading this one. I wish Laney Hatcher used fewer details from the original story, made it more "her own". There are good moments, a good pace, a good atmosphere, good ideas but I wasn't invested enough.

When the Spring Smartypants Romance releases were announced this is the one I was most looking forward to. A regency reimagining of Neanderthal Seeks Human? Yes, please!
I was hooked from the very beginning and loved looking for familiar characters and scenes and how they fit into this time period. However it still felt fresh and like its own story, not a word by word retelling.
I really liked Laney Hatcher's writing style. The characters were interesting and fun, and the story was well paced and entertaining. It's hard to believe this is her first book. I loved everything about this story and cannot wait to read more of her books!

Same…but different.
I have read a couple of books now in the Penny Reid universe collection, and even though those might be set in her world, there is little to link them up….until now. This book, if you didn’t see the recommendation from Penny, is a re-imaging or a re-telling of her first Knitting book with Janie and Quinn. The difference being it’s now set in London, given a period era, and thus gives it a slightly varied version of the original. The characters are the same, main and secondary, now with noble titles while still having their distinctive personalities. Some things don’t quite work in the cross over eras, but on the whole I really enjoyed this take on Quinn and Janie’s love story. It did take me a few chapters to get my head around what I was reading, and trying to relate it back to Penny’s book, but once I just relaxed and let the book tell me the story, I fell into it and was hooked again. It did give me some Bridgerton vibes as well, but I suppose anything set in that time in ol’ London Town would be similar as well. Mostly, I loved Quinn and Janie getting their HEA no matter what century they are in.

Qui aurait cru un jour qu'on aurait dans nos mains, la version romance historique de "Neanderthal Seeks Human" le tout premier roman ce Penny Reid ? Cette idée saugrenue s'est enfin réalisé avec Laney Hatcher, la tâche n'était pas simple : transposer une intrigue contemporaine dans une autre époque, et pourtant ça fonctionne très bien. Si bien que j'avais envie de relire le livre de Penny Reid juste après, et j'ai tellement hâte de livre les tomes suivants (oui parce qu'il va y en avoir d'autres !!). Laney Hatcher est aussi arrivée à s'approprier l'histoire originale pour en faire la sienne, tout comme les personnages, tout n'est évidemment pas pareil, mais on soupçonne ça et là des références et indices sur les histoires à venir ^^
Lady Jane menait une vie plutôt indépendante : un discret travail de comptable auprès qu'autres ladies pour les aider à gérer leur maisonnée, un fiancé... Tout bascule quand elle le trouve dans les bras d'une autre, met fin aux fiançailles et refuse de pardonner le poltron. Scandale ! Ses clientes l'abandonne l'une après l'autre, sa situation serait devenue critique si un bel et ténébreux inconnu ne l'avait pas aidé à s'extirper d'une soirée avant d'en être la risée. Mais qui est donc ce "Lord Dashing" ? Les spéculations vont bons train lorsqu'elle raconte son aventures à son groupe de broderie.
Jane le recroise à nouveau à une soirée masquée, l'attirance est bien présente entre les deux, mais Lord Dashing refuse de révélé qui il est tout de suite, une simple initiale suffira pour le moment : Q. Quelques péripéties plus tard, Jane se retrouve à travailler pour Q, pour l'aider à faire sens de plusieurs livres de comptes cryptés du club qu'il a racheté. Au fur et à mesure que Jane en apprend plus sur Q, une mystérieuse menace apparait. S'il veut protéger Jane, Q va devoir faire des révélations, si possible avant que Jane ne les apprennent pas quelqu'un d'autre...
Pas besoin de connaitre les Penny Reid pour apprécier la romance historique, l'intrigue est bien menée, avec des rebondissements. Là où cela devient plus fun c'est de voir comment sont toutes les copines de la bandes en version régence, on a tout petit riquiqui aperçu de comment seront Nico et Alex, mais j'en dis pas plus ^^ évidemment on croise Dan avec Q. et comme toujours, on ne peut que couiner sur Dan.
J'ai beaucoup plus apprécié Q version historique que Quinn version contemporain, même s'ils ont tous les deux leur côté grognon taciturne, Q tend plus vers le nounours cro meugnon ♥.

Laney Hatcher also managed to claim the original story to herselft and make it her own story, just like the characters, everything is obviously not the same, but we can find here and there references and clues to future stories ^^

Everything changes when she finds him in the arms of another woman, ends the engagement and refuses to forgive the coward. Scandal ! Her clients abandon her one after another, her situation would have become critical if a beautiful and dark stranger had not helped her to escape from an party before being the laughing stock. But who is this "Lord Dashing" ? Speculation is rife when she recounts her adventures to her embroidery group.
Jane meets him again at a masked ball, the attraction is very present between the two, but Lord Dashing refuses to reveal who he is right away, a simple initial will suffice for the moment : Q. A few adventures later, Jane finds himself working for Q, to help him make sense of several encrypted ledgers from a club he bought out. As Jane learns more about Q, a mysterious threat appears. If he wants to protect Jane, Q is going to have to come clean, if possible before Jane finds out from someone else...
No need to know the Penny Reids books to appreciate the historical romance, the plot is well done, with twists and turns. Where it becomes more fun is to see how all the friends of the knitting group are in regency version, we have a very small glimpse of how Nico and Alex will be, but I won't say more ^^ obviously we meet Dan with Q. and as always, we can only swoon about Dan.
I appreciated Q historical version much more than Quinn contemporary version, even if they both have their taciturn grumpy side, Q tends more towards the cute teddy bear ♥.

I say I liked this book is an understatement. I absolutely adored this book. Yes, it was a retelling of Penny Reid’s Neanderthal Seeks Human but it was beautifully written. The Easter eggs throughout the book were fabulous. I love how the story was adapted to the regency era but it can surely hold its own without knowing of the original. The growing relationship between Jane and Q is captured perfectly. I can’t believe this is a debut novel and am very excited to read about Eliza (and let’s hope to read about the rest of the ladies as well).

How is this the author’s first book?! I’m not sure if anything I have to say can do it justice, but it’s beautifully written and full of humor and heart. Unlike our heroine, Jane, who does not believe in swooning, I definitely felt all the swoons for this book!
I’m partial to books told from dual POV, but I was so completely captivated by Jane I didn’t mind it only being told from her POV. Sure, I would’ve loved to get inside Quinton’s handsome head but even without it I still fell head over heels for him. He’s not your typical regency hero and she’s not your typical lady so together they are perfect! Jane is incredibly smart and independent, and in a time where that was frowned upon, Q appreciated everything about her. This is a slow burn with some steam and although not overly descriptive, it’s still sensual. Pretty much angst fee, but not without conflict and there was only one thing I was could’ve used more closure one and that is how things ended with Jane’s sister.
Fans of Neanderthal seeks Human will love the historical twist and those who haven’t read it can appreciate it on its own. It includes a great group of supportive women who make the best of friends as well as a little bit of suspense. This book literally gave me butterflies, and I can’t wait to read everything Laney Hatcher ends up writing!

Jane’s life was marked by scandals and in a period where women were unfairly judge she was finding it difficult to find a proper suitor. Until the mysterious Q appears… well, I’m smitten! Stoic on the outside, Q was a caring, understanding, patient (and he had to be to deal with Jane’s insecurities), loving, respectful, handsome, should I go on?

To be honest, I DNFed at 77%. I did skim ahead a bit and the whole twist that started at 77% was interesting and pulled some of the disparate parts of the plot together but I had just lost interest...
So it's been years since I read 'Neanderthal seeks Human' and I remember liking it but I just couldn't bring myself to read more by the same author. I think she's just not my cup of tea.
But anyways,
Janey's family sucks. So she lives with her friend in town. I don't think her father or younger sister ever show up in the story, which was kinda weird. Janey, makes money by doing the accounting for friends of her ex boyfriend. She recently dumped said boyfriend who happens to be the son of a duke. But he is also a loser. Yet the idiot seems determined to woo her back. The 'twist' helped make some sense of this, but really I still don't see why he was so determined to marry her.

Janey meets Q the mysterious gentleman who helps her escape a ball when she has a wardrobe malfunction. She ends up working his books for him at the gaming hell he bought. For the first 2/3 of the story she has no idea who he is. She only knows him as Q.
I liked's Q's character for what it was but I never felt like I knew him really. Er rather I should say I did like his character until he mentions some stuff from his dark past. Then I was like WTF dude???
You get to know Janey more but I found her continually contradictory in her actions and reasoning. She's supposed to be really smart with numbers, but it doesn't really come across. And in all other areas, well, she just isn't the brightest bulb. In fact, I thought she was a nitwit. It was an example of the author saying it's so, but it really isn't.
I really didn't see what Q liked about her so much. She had no allure that I could tell.
So meh.
Glad I gave it a go, but it just wasn't for me. (I kept putting it down to read other stuff).

So it's been years since I read 'Neanderthal seeks Human' and I remember liking it but I just couldn't bring myself to read more by the same author. I think she's just not my cup of tea.
But anyways,
Janey's family sucks. So she lives with her friend in town. I don't think her father or younger sister ever show up in the story, which was kinda weird. Janey, makes money by doing the accounting for friends of her ex boyfriend. She recently dumped said boyfriend who happens to be the son of a duke. But he is also a loser. Yet the idiot seems determined to woo her back. The 'twist' helped make some sense of this, but really I still don't see why he was so determined to marry her.
-shrug-.
Janey meets Q the mysterious gentleman who helps her escape a ball when she has a wardrobe malfunction. She ends up working his books for him at the gaming hell he bought. For the first 2/3 of the story she has no idea who he is. She only knows him as Q.
I liked's Q's character for what it was but I never felt like I knew him really. Er rather I should say I did like his character until he mentions some stuff from his dark past. Then I was like WTF dude???
You get to know Janey more but I found her continually contradictory in her actions and reasoning. She's supposed to be really smart with numbers, but it doesn't really come across. And in all other areas, well, she just isn't the brightest bulb. In fact, I thought she was a nitwit. It was an example of the author saying it's so, but it really isn't.
I really didn't see what Q liked about her so much. She had no allure that I could tell.
So meh.
Glad I gave it a go, but it just wasn't for me. (I kept putting it down to read other stuff).

I really like historical romances. I really really liked the Knitting in the City series. And I loved this rendition of Janie and Quinn!!!!!!
This was definitely one of my most anticipated reads of this season, and it was SO GOOD. I never thought of how a modern romance with such peculiar characters could be historically transposed, but that's definitely how one should do it! All of the quirkiness of our characters are sublimely adapted to the historical setting. The story flows amazingly, I had problems putting it down. And Lord Dashing is everything one could hope for (also this name? Ah-mazing)
Seriously I NEED to see how all of the other ladies stories are told. Like right now!!! If that's how Janie is depicted I am so looking forward to reading Fiona's story (Yes I know it'll be some time but she's always been my favourite knitter so bear with me)!!
Now I seriously need more from Laney Hatcher. Hopefully First to Fall will be out soon enough!!

Unpopular opinion!
This read like fanfiction - for a reason, of course. The plot was, of course, close to Neanderthal seeks Human.
The historical part of this romance wasn't done very well.
I didn't like the audiobook either.
