River:
Born between two worlds, belonging to neither.
Raised as a Huntress, sheltered by her mother's clan and trained to be a warrior, River has spent her life fearing the memory of her father's pack, and the brutal beasts within. After being attacked as a child by one of the shifters under her father's rule, she has never set foot in the pack's reserve again.
On her twenty-fifth birthday, she's tasked with visiting her dying grandmother, the pack matriarch.
Only not everything is that simple.
Broken agreements. False truths. Manipulation and avoidance.
Promises made years ago that must be kept.
Red capes and wicker baskets.
In the reserve, pack law is sacred.

Gabriel:
Thirteen years he's waited for his mate.
Sacrifices made to protect her, to keep her safe from the others in the pack who would claim the Alpha's daughter for their own, in order to rise swiftly through the hierarchy to lead the pack.
When nature reaches out with meddling fingers, it's not only his inner beast he needs to fight in order to take what is owed to him.
A deal was made.
The deal was broken.
Now all hell is breaking loose, and the one thing he treasures is the one thing he stands to lose.

This book gives a whole new twist to Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf!
River had a terrible experience the last time she was with them and now she has to go to their den again, and she really doesn't want to.
This story was steamy and I could not stop reading it! The characters were so well put together and the storyline was incredible.
I can't wait for the next part of this story!

When I first heard about this story, I was intrigued. Being I am one who doesn’t read a lot of PNR, I went into it with open eyes. Let me just say, I am so glad that I took the plunge into this wolf shifter world! It is absolutely incredible! From the very first sentence, I was hooked. The characters ingrained themselves into my very heart and soul. I hurt for them, I cried for them, I laughed for them, and I loved them. River and Gabriel are just the most engaging characters I have read about in a very long time.

River was brought up in a different world than me or you. It involved wolfs, hunters and others who made her life a living hell. Until one day, she was told to do something that would irrevocably change her life. She was nervous, she was scared, but she went ahead. When she met Gabriel, she wasn’t sure what to make of this handsome Alpha, but she wasn’t going to just give in to whatever it is he wanted from her. Because of her life, River is very untrusting and leery of others. Can Gabriel show her that they truly belong together and that they were meant to be? He knows she is meant to be in his world as his mate and so much more but needs to prove it to her.

This story has some parts that made me want to put the book down so that I could catch my breath, it’s that intense. The emotions I felt while reading was unreal. I became so attached to these characters and the storyline, that I never wanted it to end. I must say bravo to this author for writing such a detailed, eloquent, story of which will forever be in my heart.

God damn! This book was amazing! I read it for the first time in the Red Riding Hood anthology. I loved that book then and I was always hoping that Kay would further expand that book and rerelease it. I was not disappointed with this book. The changes that were made to this book just made it that much better. The fact that it will be a duet.. my mind is blown and I can't wait for the next book to be released so that I can see how it all turns out.

This was a heartbreaking read. There were times I just wanted to shout at River to stop fighting. She was just making things harder for herself the more she tried to fight it. She was jumping from one fire to the next till she was surrounded with a raging inferno with no way out. There were times when my breath caught in my chest with fear at the situations she found herself in. I was sure that it couldn't get any worse for her.. only to discover that yes it could. And still she was stubbornly fighting it and trying to find a way out.

I was relieved at the end where she came to some acceptance of her situation and was determined to fight just as hard to make it a better for herself and everybody in the pack. Things had to change. She was going to see to it that they did.

This was a heart wrenching story. In parts of it I was crying and shouting at and for River. I can't wait to read the next part of this story. I'm hoping it won't be so rough on River as this book was.. but something tells me that won't be the case. River has never had an easy life and I don't see the next part she is stepping into being any different than what has passed.

I felt many things as I read this version of Little Red Riding Hood. River goes to bring her Grandmother a basket her mother sent her to give but once she enters that pack's territory, her life changes. River has a bad memory of an incident when she was a young teen. Being raised in her mother's pack, she was raised as a Huntress, but had many lies to get through and danger along with revelations to learn. Poor River is being used by everyone in her life and lots of truths are coming out that could endanger her in her father's pack. Gabriel has been waiting for her, his mate, and the wait is over. Gabriel loves River and shows her as well as he can while doing his best to protect her from the evil plans that others have for her. Gabriel and River are meant for each other, their love is complicated by other's plans for the future of the pack and positions of power.
There is more story to tell, so there is a soft cliffhanger which I hope is finished in the next book. I Hope love conquers all like any good romance should.

I need book 2 right now. It's a moral imperative.

This grabbed me by the back of the neck and didn't let go until the very end. Seriously, it twisted me all around and kept me so involved.

River. Oh, poor River. Poor, poor, poor River. She is going through so much crap, and I feel sorry for her. She doesn't feel like anyone loves her or even wants her, and all of a sudden secrets are being dropped in on her. I don't blame her for wanting to run far and away. I sure as heck would too.

I don't know whether or not I like Gabriel. I mean, I think I do most of the time, but there are times that he's just too much, and he needs reining in a little bit, maybe. I do think that he has River's best interests at heart, at least most of the time.

I hate, hate, hate her mother and father.

Thrilled that I took a chance on this book. I'm a huge PNR fan...Omegaverse, not so much. But I have to say this little gem surprised me at many turns, and I'll happily read more of the author's take on Omegaverse. The female MC is strong, feisty and questions everything. She doesn't just happily submit to the rules of the wolf clan she has been thrust into. I don't just like this character, I admire her. She never wavered from her core beliefs, even though her world was shattering around her. Her fated mate, is also very forward thinking. Though he grew up in the wolf clan and is bound by it's laws, he sees the issues that their out-dated thinking has wrought.

This story takes on modern gender role issues, in a unique paranormal setting, that I found intriguing and though not perfect, my interest never wavered. I may not read a lot of Omegaverse stories but this one stands out among those I have read. Regular readers of the sub-genre may have other feelings about it but I'm very happy I gave this one a chance.

NOTE: issues of sexual assault, pedophilia, incest, parental neglect, pregnancy loss (mentioned), and dubious consent are all explored in this book.

As a caveat, I’ve been reading countless Red Riding Hood adaptations all week. For this reason, I’m refraining from offering a numerical rating until I’ve had more time to reflect. Still, I want to provide some initial thoughts on the first book in the Shifting Boundaries series, River Runs Red.

“Violence ran in her veins, doubly ingrained from both contributors to her DNA.”

This is only one quote of many that highlights the dark nature of this book. It is not your average fairytale retelling. Amidst the brutality and carnage, there are so many incredible messages about healing, self-love, and belonging.

Imagine spending your entire life on the outside looking in; feeling worthless and alone even amidst your own family. FMC, River, is the daughter of a huntress and the hunted; a ‘half-breed’ human and wolf. She is plagued by the societal pressure of being mixed species. Torn between two worlds, never knowing where she belongs…

It’s this adversity that sets the stage for River’s epic story. Maybe she’s not the outsider. Maybe she is stronger than she believes. But River will have to wade through age-old decisions and deceptions before allowing her past and present to shape her future.

River Runs Red reads like a coming of age story. Despite our MC turning 25, she’s just discovering so much about herself and her history. But River’s story is also an exploration of trauma and healing. A part of me felt heard and healed simply by reading about her sexual trauma…It made me feel less alone.

From River’s visceral fear of men to her issues with physical touch, I’ve never seen this subject addressed so well. Moreover, Kay Elle Parker is explicit in messaging that
PTSD has no expiration date. Healing is not linear, and that kind of abuse often stays you for a long time. The body keeps the score, but so does the mind. And the mere thought of physical affection or intimacy can be the biggest hurdle and trigger to survivors.

This is a key piece in understanding the romance blooming between River and her fated mate, Gabriel.

Beyond the character driven plot and romance arc, the rest of the worldbuilding is a bit complex. There are hunters and shifters, and a supposed world of vampires, wendigos, and other supernatural creatures. But the pack drama, presence of ‘Mother Nature,’ and other lore feels muddled and inconsistent.

I’m not sure if I will continue this series. But I am happy I read it. For a retelling, it’s well-adapted and check’s all the boxes.

I honestly don't know where to start with this review. I hadn't read it when it was in an anthology awhile back so I went in blind. This story knocked the breath out of me! I've loved Ms. Parker's BDSM series, Club Avalon, but this is something special. River..............I felt sorry for her because of the position she had been put in all her life after an event happened when she was a child. That event changed her and made her not trust anyone! As I read the story, it slowly morphed into me wanting to shake some sense into her because she was fighting her feelings so bad. Gabriel............he knew River was his mate when she was just a little girl so he waited for her all those years. After "the event", when she was sent to live with her mother (don't get me started on her) he still waited. When she returned and learned the truth, he was there for her no matter how hard she tried to push him away. Even when he had to get "rough" with her, I still loved him because I knew he was doing what was the best thing for her. I laughed, I cried (boy did I cry), I got mad but mad did I fall hard for both of these characters. I already know this story is going to be one of my favorites of this year. It will be going on my special shelf I have for books that have touched me deeply. If you like PNR and you like dark, don't miss this book. There is more to come in this world and I can't wait to see what happens!

I've have always enjoyed Kay Elle Parker's, Club Avalon BDSM series, so I knew this would be excellent. But River, yes I felt sorry for her because of her past. I know how bad an event like this can effect and change her. The more I read I really wanted to smack her because she was fighting her fates so bad. And Gabriel (drool worthy) he waited so long for River. Knowing she was his mate all along when she was a child. He waited for her all those years for her to return to the clan. I loved him because he was trying so hard to do what was he thought was good for her. I cheered for both of these characters in the end both deserving to finally find some happiness. A very satisfying and enjoyable reading experience.

This is a surprising change!
Being a devoted fan of Ms Parker's books it took me a while to get to grips with this one.
In the beginning I would have liked to take the heroine, sat her down and urged her most emphatically to get her ducks in a row before she opened her mouth again.
However when the proverbial brown substance hit the fan, she was right where she needed to be, who, and with whom she needed to be, to do the right thing.
All forgiven Ms P.!
When can I get the next book?

I found this seductive and steamy PNR twist on Little Red Riding Hood utterly delicious! I was quickly pulled into and consumed by River and Gabriel's story. Rich emotions, taut drama, turmoil, sizzling heat and raw intensity. I need the next book NOW!!! I am posting an unbiased, unsolicited review.

Shifting boundaries indeed.

Well, that was certainly a read.I went into this knowing it was going to be a dark erotic romance, a wolf shifter romance, etc.. but this book dances along the line of pedophilia. River is 25 for the duration of this story, but her fated mate - whose age we are never given - has just known she was going to be his mate from the time she was born. Watched her grow up - and while making it clear he had no sexual feelings toward her while she was a child - he knew her from birth to age 12 before he meets her again at age 25. We are given insights to his thoughts a bit too often on how he watched her as a child knowing she would be his mate some day and watching a child waiting for them to become an adult so you can be with them is still disturbing. This comes off as almost grooming and it was really creepy. The age gap isn’t what bothered me, nor the other dark context because I can suspend disbelief for the purposes of a wolf shifter romance but that was something I found myself having to ignore/rewrite in my mind the entire time.

As far as shifter erotic stories go this one did hold my attention for the novel but the pacing was off and it could have absolutely used another editor as it was riddled with typos. I won’t be continuing on with this series.

A Dark Telling of Little Red Riding hood…

Oh My Gawd….I want to stand up and give Kay a big applause for a book well done, not only having a well written plot (a darker version of the fairytale Little Red Riding hood) but with characters that you can’t help but become emotionally invested with as the battle each other and their unique situation…
River life hasn’t been easy or her own being a child of two entities (a child of an alpha wolf and a huntress) growing up her father pack until her future is threatened she is sent away to her mothers clan of huntresses where she stayed to an age when she must go back to her fathers pack by the end of the day she turns 25, but River doesn’t want to go back as it brings back so many bad memories and she just doesn’t trust anyone or anything and fights it..
Gabriel has been waiting for Rivers return for over a decade, he wants time to court, love and protect her but time and River’s mistrust is against him at every turn but to give him the credit he is due Gabriel stays close to keep River safe..
The rollercoaster twists in this book just don’t stop there as Gabriel and River fight forces from outside and within making this book a hard to put down read and definitely worth five stars if not more..

only made it to ch5

Terrible. I couldn’t get past chapter 5 because of how awful I thought it was.
Spoilers
River is sent to her dads mom(wolf shifter) “matriarch” by her huntress mom, who apparently put a lot of unnecessary work into either training her or brainwashing her for some reason. Unfortunately, the grandma has just enough time to inform 25yo River she’s going into her second ever estrus (first one at 13?) and has an arranged mating. Sort of. Grandma is immediately killed though by betroths demonic brother and everyone just moves on. Also, literal Mother Nature is “guiding them but River decides that MOW is the perfect time to start disregarding her? Way too much running, interrupted by random but kicking and helplessness later, she dislocated a knee, got a concussion, maybe broken ribs, and nearly raped all for her dad to finally notice all the commotion and call for a “circle” so alphas can kill each other to get a higher position in the pack. Which makes no sense cause the book establishes, a lot, that he doesn’t think women are worth anything, doesn’t like River, and for some reason would let whoever managed to rape her the new alpha?

I generally enjoy the dark reads but this just felt shallow and inconsistent.

This is a very different kind of little red riding hood and I LOVED it! I know usually this author does very long books and this one is shorter then her norm, but it is still fairly long of a book.

River is a hybrid that has a mixed up past. Things aren't what they seem and River doesn't want anything to do with it. But circumstances are put on her that start to take away her choice's.

I have to say River is very much a stubborn fighter. I wanted to tell at her a few times. But that is also why the book was so good. Her way of fighting things and how she does them is what made the story so good, and also made the book fly way faster then I wanted. So I can't be too upset with River because she was a great character to read because of these faults. I really can't wait to see where this story goes from here. This is a bit of a cliffhanger, but it does leave you with a Happy for now ending. So if you can deal with that I suggest you jump on this series!

Oh. My. Heart. Is. Breaking

If you are a fan of Kay's work you know what you are in for. It will be tragic. It will be heartbreaking. It may even be gut-wrenching. But it will always be well worth it. I did not get to read this story when it was in the antho and so this was my first time laying hands on it and LET. ME. TEll. YOU! WOW.

It was well worth the wait. Poor River is having a tough time here and she can't seem to help herself to save her life. This Little Red Robin Hood retelling is so beautifully written. Like all of Kay's books, it's a journey. River is going through a nightmare and finds herself in one situation to the next. This story makes you scream and cry and want to toss your tablet for all the best reasons.

You get so emotionally involved in this story and completely wrapped up in her tragic situation. I absolutely loved this book and I can't wait to see what is in store for River. This is only the beginning but wow what a kick start to this series.

Human/wolf/huntress

Loved this story, right from the start to the end, page after page we follow one womens journey. Albeit a rough one full of lies which have been told, to then knowing the truth and excepting who she really is and using those powers to fight for her and her mates life.
River has just turned twenty five and now againt her wishes she goes to see her grandmother. Now she is informed that it is time for her to matewith the one who has waited so long for her. Her mate, Gabriel.
Now Grabriel has her he must tread carefully, she doesnt remember much only what happened to her. She has been fed lies and now her esgen is upon her can he make her believe him and his love for her.

This is just book one and im really looking forward to the next story coming out to see what happens next.

The first book in a new paranormal series.
I seem to be in the minority but I didn’t care for River for most of the book. She really annoyed me. I felt she was in a victim role for most of the book, making really stupid choices. I get that she was confused and afraid, but she never took a moment to think. It wasn’t until the last two chapters that River showed strength and really pulled for herself and Gabriel.

I liked Gabriel, he was strong, gentle and very patient.
It might be because it was the first book, but I missed a bit of worldbuilding about how the Hunteress and Shifters in this world existed.

I do want to read the next book to see where the story goes because the ending was strong.

Exciting World - Tough Romance!!

Half Huntress by her mother, Half wolf shifter by her father, yet belonging in neither world. When a crucial 25th birthday comes, River is sent back to her father’s pack. She doesn’t know she has been promised to Gabriel, and the magical occurrences that coincide with her 25th year.

Gabriel has waited 13 years for her. Her memory has been taken and replaced with negativity. Will they be able to connect or will those who see them as a threat get the upper hand. Raw, Gritty and magical.

Nooooo😭i'm so sad...😭, All the raping and violance, why someone like and writhe This things i don't know 🥺

"Chances are he’ll be more likely to hurt you if you resist now than if you submit and accept him willingly.”

WtF????

If you like a book like that, go for it 😩

PS: I read the author's note, but it said "with a litle to no consent for readers who like a little dark side" it didn't say that throughout the book there are constant physical and psychological violations or attempts at heroin.

Loved this play on Little Red Riding Hood!

The big bad wolf on this story though… 🔥

I went into this book completely blind, and I’m so glad I did. There is a good amount of world building that helped me better understand the characters and the choices they had to make. The push and pull between River and Gabriel is really well done and I loved the build of their relationship! I can’t wait to see more from these characters!

SO good!!! 🔥🔥🔥

What a rollercoaster of a story! Super unique with interesting little tidbits of the fairytale. The FMC, River, has gone through the ringer in this book, but totally manages to come out on top. I loved all the characters, especially Gabriel! He sounds like the perfect mate 😍

The ending was perfect and builds up to what book 2 will be about - I bet it's going to be full of adventure and suspense!

Little Red Riding Hood never looked so deadly.

I went into this story completely blind and WOW, I could not set it down!

Now be warned, there are some triggers so if darkness isn't your thing, don't pick this up.

River really cannot catch a break, my heart broke for her so many times but she NEVER gave up! I absolutely loved Gabriel, he never once walked away from her. He had been there even when she wasn't.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this story because it was so different from what I am used to from Kay but she sucked me in from the start. River has to return to a life she thought she had left behind forever and she had no idea what to expect. From there, unrolls a story that was unpredictable and unique from other shifter books I have read before. This story ends as a happy-for-now story I can't wait to see what happens next.

A creative retelling of Little Red Riding Hood.

Be strong when you pick up this book to read. The author doesn't just touch on a few uncomfortable subjects - she dissects them and studies them through a microscope, and I was tempted to sleep with the light on. If the idea of non-con or child abews upsets you, you may want to skip this and move on to her next book.

The story had a dream-like quality to it.

I volunteered to review an ARC.

Just WOW!!! What an intense beautiful Red Riding Hood Retelling that gave me all the intense feels and boy you get mad, cry, and so nervous it has it all. The words just fly off the pages and consume you.

The decisions are not easy but what has to be done is done and I thought I would not like the outcome but I am in love with this story. It is incredible.

This story was very different from my usual genre but nevertheless i thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It had shades of fairytales, shifters, demons ,seriously disturbed relatives but most importantly it had a happy ending( for now that is!) I can't wait to read what happens next.

Dnf at 30%. I might come back to it later, but I was annoyed by every character in this book. River needs to get a clue and Gabriel needs to grow a pair. I get why the story is written the way it is, but that’s not what I prefer in omegaverse. Might also be my mood. The writing is solid and I like the premise, so may give it another go at some point.
