We promised ourselves that we wouldn’t use something so cliché as Jack is Back in the book description, but now that it is typed, we might as well own it.
Jack is Back! He is once again joined by his loyal friend Gooch and his loveable familiar Rat Damon as they attempt to save Earth from the might of the Ravanan Empire.
With the addition of two newcomers from earth, the party continues their quest to shut down power sources, make friendly with the natives, and be excellent to each other.
I wanted to try this one to see if the story improved since the set up was done. It did not. It got worse. A fifth of the way in and I quit. The individual statements of the main characters lack any consistency. The situation with the dwarves is just completely fabricated. Nothing comes off as realistic, it is set dressing. Poorly written, inconsistent set dressing. The main characters are not funny or silly, they are caricatures. Just no.
I like the overall story and premise of this book, and in general like the characters, though the immature, crude, cornieness of them all is grating rather than funny, these are supposed to be 40 year old men, not 17 year old boys...
The humor in this story is very crude, simple, corny, and doesn't add much to the book. The characters are very 2 dimensional, and we don't see much in the way of growth (which makes sense, it's only been two weeks) but we should see something, these men have been in death defying situations, battling for their lives, that changes a person, yet we still have these selfish immature man children out to save the world... we don't have solid motivation as to why these guys are doing what they are doing, they are saving the world because that's what you do, that's all the motivation that's driving them, very thin.
Overall enjoyable, almost put it down a few times, I'll read the next one when it comes out, if I notice it or remember it, that's as far as I'll go.
