What can one committed Christian accomplish in a dark, dangerous world? The life of William Wilberforce provides a glowing example. The subject of a major motion picture in 2007, Wilberforce was a member of Parliament who fought to abolish slavery in England decades before the American Civil War. He also wrote, penning a best-selling book promoting Real Christianity. This easy-to-read, novelized biography of Wilberforce shows readers what dedication to God and His Word can accomplish, while topically - arranged excerpts from his Real Christianity will challenge readers in their faith.
William Wilberforce was a politician but he was a Christian. He allowed his faith to guide him and not a party or polls. He had differences with his friends but he never allowed those differences to destroy a friendship. This is about a man who lived his faith and convictions.
This book was a great biography on William Wilberforce for several reasons. First of all, it was an extremely easy read. The biography is really a novelization, so it isn't as dry as a typical biography. Secondly, it contains little blurbs of things Wilberforce said in his book Real Christianity, which gives the book a perspective on his personal views in his own words. And thirdly, even though the writing isn't quite top-notch, the book truly lets you see Wilberforce's character in a tangible narrative.
Dispite the fact that I don't typically like novelized biographies, this book was a good read. It is a quick summary of his life and lingered on the impact that religion had on him and the impact he had on religious understanding at the time.
Strengths: easy to read, good refresher, the call outs and quotes throughout Weaknesses: somewhat anachronistic, persistent theological bias based on current trends, over simplification
In the end, I would recommend this book to someone who either wants a quick summary of the events or someone looking for a refresher.
Good book. Interesting hearing the history of Britain during the same time that the USA was just in it's infancy as a nation. Wilberforce was a driving force for abolishing slavery in the british empire. Very neat.
