Black Oak #6

The Blood of Black Oak

Rate this book
I watch the blood as it seeps from him, pooling like crimson flame around his neck, trickling in rivulets of liquid fire onto the dense body below.
The body I've touched. I've held. I've kissed. I've felt wrapped around me for so long, holding me possessively, protecting me from those who wanted me lost.
The nightmarish thud as he hits the ground rages through my cells as a scream is ripped from my throat.
The horror of raw bloodshed is new to me.
I try to free my hands from the coarse rope binding them so that I can get to him before the eyes locked onto mine lose the blaze of their light and close for good, turning to ash before my eyes.
I have to get there so that I can touch him. Hold him. So that he knows I'm there.
He has to know I'm there...
I tried to stop it.
I tried to do what they asked for.
I tried to heal the wounds enslaving so many, to vanquish the demons so cruelly infesting their host, unwilling to let go.
They were too strong, too corrupt, too ravenous for blood.
I couldn't quench their thirst for torment.
I wanted to save them all.
I should have known it could only end in death...

The Blood of Black Oak is book six in the award-winning Black Oak series.

Unnecessary Excessive Verbiage

Well, to be perfectly honest, in my humble opinion, of course without offending anyone who thinks differently from my point of view, but also by looking into this matter in a different perspective and without being condemning of one's views and by trying to make it objectified, and by considering each and every one's valid opinion, I honestly believe that I completely forgot what I was going to say.

Why did I start my review like that with a pointless statement? That's how I feel right now. This series was too long, too dragged out and frankly, I'm disappointed. Although the story is wrapped up, the 900 pages were futile.

This could have been 3 books, maybe 4. Spanning it over 6 with the redundancy was utterly frustrating. I was invested in the story after the first 2 books, but found myself waning after the last 3 books. A better plot outline and editing would have reduced the repetitive nature. Example of this would be the "pain" that was expressed from various characters. This word was used 200+ times. It was downright painful to read the same thing over and over again.

Why? The last 3 books were a disaster. The repetitive nature of the storyline, the plot did not progress, the turtle slow character development and the wishy-washy nature of Jessynia made me indifferent at this point.

I'm heartbroken to be writing a review like this, but as an active member of the book community, I feel it's necessary to leave such constructive criticism. This final book was 900 pages of excessive verbage, fluffy filler to make the same point. The POV's from the side characters distracted from the story of Jess, Cameron and Jack.

Although I adore the author, she did not do herself justice in the finale of this series. I know this will be an unpopular opinion, but I felt there were too many cooks in the kitchen giving their opinion on the direction of this final book. Meaning, the extra character point-of-views are too chaotic and have no added value to the storyline.

Please forgive me, but I just don't have it in me to sugarcoat my opinion.

These 4 Stars are for Jack.
Movement, by Hozier
Jess and Jack's wedding song
"The song I chose because every word felt like it had been written for her." - Jack
😭😭😭😭😭

Not to be dramatic, but I’m never going to recover from this. That ending was soul-crushing. I want to pull a ‘Misery-Kathy Bates’ on this author and force her to rewrite the ending. Nothing can justify Jack and Jess not being together at the end. How do you write such an incredibly moving and thrilling love story between two people, two soulmates, just to end it in unequivocal heartbreak? An ending compelling in its poignancy, but heartbreaking nonetheless. This open-ended conclusion is complete and utter bullshit. It's a goddamn crime is what it is, not only because these characters deserved better, but also because any fiction sold as a romance that fails to deliver a HEA, is a crime...at least that's how it feels for romance readers. Look, I don't make the rules.

My heart is weeping for Jack. I'm so incredibly sad for him and Jess. The author spent 6 very long books convincing me of their unbreakable bond, the extraordinary and all-consuming love they had for one another, just to have her end up with what felt like the safer choice. No offense to Cameron but even he knew he was the safer choice; he reminded Jess of this AD NAUSEAM. Safe, who wants safe?! Give me Jack's earth-shattering love any day. I believed that was why Jess could never truly leave Jack, and didn't hesitate to push Cameron away constantly. Yet, the author decided it was Jack who needed to walk away, leaving open the possibility of Jess finding her way back to him in the future...you know, the man she loved more than any other, the man who vowed he'd wait for her to make her way back to him one day, the man who dreamt of her before he ever met her. But yeah, tell me again why they're not together? You gotta be kidding me. Why bother selling him to me then? In the 'Word from the Author' section, she explains why she chose this ending. She wanted to allow the characters time to "heal" and for Jack to learn to live without Jess. As if Jack and Jess couldn't heal together or each other. As if Cameron didn't also need to heal and learn to live without her. For fuck's sake just give us a proper ending, because even the characters weren't happy with this one. The book ends with Jess still missing and loving Jack, and with her receiving a text from him reminding her he still can't live without her; Jess sheds a tear. Does that sound like healing to you, or happiness? Excuse me while I weep.

Despite all the issues I had with the series, all its flaws, I managed to overlook these and focus on aspects of the story that I did love and enjoy, aspects that I found addictive and enthralling. However, the conclusion, if you can even call it that, left me emotionally wrecked and disappointed. It overshadowed the positives. It's only because of Jack that I can't make myself rate this lower than 4 Stars. He deserves all the stars. Even Sebastian the villain which could also be considered the anti-hero, deserves brownie points. He was fascinating. Sorry to Cameron; he was great and all but next to Jack and Sebastian, he pales in comparison. He started out strong but fell short for me at the end.

As many reviewers mention throughout the series, this was filled with recycled scenarios and dialogue. And too many secondary characters with their own stories and PoV included. Much of this was unnecessary. This book alone is 750+ pages. The series could have been condensed into 3 books, max, and I'm being generous.

Notes:
I'm putting book 6 under reverse harem because every single man in this book wanted Jess. She had a physical and emotional relationship with 3 of them, independently: Jack, Cam, and Sebastian. Right before the end, she has a threesome with Jack and Cam. This is why Jack walks away, because he couldn't cope with sharing her with Cam. I love and respect him more for not wanting to share, honestly.

You've got to be kidding me

I started book 1 of this series when the author originally listed it as an unfinished trilogy. i stuck with it to the end giving the author the benefit of the doubt. After the 6th and "allegedly" final installment I'm angry and asking myself why did I bother??? If you read the first book and the final 25% of book 6 you'd have the entire series covered. The middle books just went round and round and round in the same circle with dialogue repeated by characters over and over. Top that off with the worst, most unresolved ending ever, and I'm frustrated I wasted my time. The readers deserved better.

Sitting here asking myself, if the last three books of a six book series were so terrible, how in the world did I make it through them?

The only thing I can think of is that Edenwood has developed a small cast of really compelling characters... and did nothing else. It was worth reading to stay with the characters, as I'm sure it has been for the author and the readers who've made it this far.

But it's obvious how little thought was put into these books as discrete novels in a series, or even the series as a series overall. There are no arcs to speak of – and the character development that does take place is so drawn out that it results in horrendously repetitive dialogue. The result is a "conclusion" that felt as thrown together as the rest of the plot.

As for that conclusion: even if I thought the final relationship constellation was the best possible ending (I don't), its intentional provisionality is truly a slap in the face after sticking around for this long.

Don't even get me started on the superfluous POVs! We're supposed to care about Darragh, why?

Jack, Cam, and Jess could have had a trilogy, Edenwood could have taken a break, and then returned to a second trilogy with the characters – or a spinoff with a new heroine! – that went deeper with Sebastian. Instead, she just kept writing more scenes: repeating and diluting what was already there. (The narrative equivalent of "beating a dead horse.")

I'll miss these characters! But omg, am I relieved that this is over.

2.5 stars for this series, 4 stars for Jack as a character. I'll split the difference and just give it 3 stars. This is a review of the whole series, which is a hot mess. I read some reviews of this last book before even starting this series. So, going into it, I knew who Jessynia’s HEA was with. I also knew that most people think this series gets repetitive, and should have been half as long. I agree with that!

This is about Jessynia (24), who discovers that her husband Jack (28) has been cheating. She reconnects with her old friend Cameron (28), who is Jack’s enemy. And, she learns that both men are in this secret society / sex cult. The secret society starts messing with her life. She ping-pongs between Cameron and Jack, spends a lot of time being stalked by the secret society’s goons (and also by Cameron and Jack’s goons – every man in this series has a flock of henchmen that stalk her). Also, Sebastian (35), the evil secret society leader, gets obsessed with her, too. So, Jack, Cameron, and Sebastian are all her love interests, but she ends up with 1 of them.

Would I rec this? Only you don't mind reading a "cheating husband” character, if he’s compelling enough. Jack is the best part of this series, and he gets the most page time and steamy scenes. If you can't bring yourself to ever like him (valid!), then there's no point in reading it. I hated him, at first. Somewhere along the way, I came around to feeling like I understood why a woman would love him, despite his crimes. I never would have thought I could like a character like that (he didn’t just cheat once – not that that would be okay, either—but he did it a LOT). And, he didn’t really grovel. It's impressive writing witchcraft that somehow, this made me like him. I enjoy when a story can make me be like, "What's wrong with me for liking this guy?!" So, I’d only rec this series if that sounds good. (But, even then, I’d rec this with the warning that it drags on too long, is SO wordy, gets repetitive, and has an irritating heroine).

This series almost reminds me of Torment: Part One by Dylan Page. Not in its plot or characters. But just in terms of how it pushes that similar button, of making you be like, "I love this horrible man. I will be haunted by him. How did this story make me love him and hate him simultaneously?!" And in both stories, that guy (Jack, in this case) carries the entire story on his back. And, the heroine doesn’t

As for the other characters...Sebastian wasn’t as fascinating as the story thought he was. I might have liked him more if his scenes with Jess weren’t so tediously repetitive. (And melodramatic. She'd be like, "I want to heal you, come into the light!" And he'd be like, "I AM the darkness!" Their dialogue was too ridiculous. It didn't help that they had that conversation 20 times, at least). Side characters dip in and out of the story chaotically. There were some that I did find interesting, like Jack’s family. Other side characters like Grace and Beth were pointless – the story eventually forgot they existed, too. Cameron felt like a more bland imitation of Jack. His declarations of love for Jessnyia were too flowery and sappy, and his love for her felt unearned.

Jessnyia was a weak heroine. Although I ended up liking Jack, that doesn’t mean he gets a pass for cheating on her! Plus, since this story did all this work to make me see how a woman might still love and stay with him, without being a doormat, that effort felt wasted. Because Jessnyia still DID often feel like a doormat. It was irritating how much she brushed off his crimes, and backed down during their confrontations. Every time Jack would say, “you need to trust me again,” she’d be like, “okay!” and she wouldn’t point out that he needs to do more to earn that. Every time anyone reminded her how much he'd cheated, she said “stop!” and stick her head in the sand. Every time Jack was in a rage about her relationship with Cameron, she barely tried to point out that the only reason she and Cameron got involved in the first place was because she was reacting to Jack cheating! She’d just meekly let him bulldoze her. And, any time someone pointed out the evil things Sebastian did, and how he did evil things TO HER, she'd be like, "but he's a poor sweet baby!"

It was hard to understand why all these powerful men thought she was so special, and Not Like Other Girls. The series repeats a million times that she’s very hot, but we’re supposed to believe these men also love her personality, in addition to her looks. What personality?

She was also stupid. Like she’d keep saying, “Should we call the police?” when something bad happened. Then, someone would say, “We can’t, the secret society has cops on their payroll, it would make things worse.” Then 2 scenes later, Jessnyia would be like, “So, should we call the police?”

Also, I was a bit mislead by looking up the ending spoiler that

Despite all my problems with it, this series was unique. And, Jack is the type of character that I like to read – he’s not a forgettable cookie cutter hero. He made me question myself, like “Why do I like him?” I like when a hero can do that. I’ll remember him after reading this, and I’ll think about him again. That's grounds for 4 stars from me. But everything else about this series is like 2 stars. I would probably read more from this author. But, I hope she gets better at writing less annoying heroines, tighter stories, and gets a better editor.

And, I'm a clown, because the final author's note made it sound like this is the end for now, but she may return with more books in the future....and I will read them, if she does that. It may be a hate-read with lots of skimming. This series doesn't need more books! It didn't even need the 6 it has! But nevertheless, if she offers up more Jack on the page, unfortunately I will be seated for it.

Oh my god. I’m gutted. My heart is heavy with such bittersweet sadness. What a spectacular way to end this series. I rooted for Jess to be with a certain one the WHOLE time, but now, I’m not sure. This installment laid all of these characters completely bare and allowed you to see each one authentically. I pined for Cam’s unrelenting devotion to her no matter his personal suffering. Jack is not who I originally thought him to be. My heart went out to this character, especially in the end. I felt actual heartbreak. And Sebastian sliced me in half - I’m just a mix of emotions. He was like the WORST person ever in the beginning and now I can’t get him out of my head - it’s insane.

I want so badly to know what becomes of these men. The author’s words were candid and somewhat soothing in the afterword. I can only hope Monique hears those soft whispers of journeys yet to unfold and we meet them again one day soon. That being said, I need a breather before starting my next read. TBOBO was a lot.

This is the darkest one yet. Please be advised of the mature rating for this content. It contains violence, drug use, childhood abuse, BDSM, and demonic references that could trigger sensitive readers.

I was very disappointed with this book. I had to skim a lot of it because of all the repetitive prose. I couldn’t keep hearing more and more about trauma and healing. Also I disliked the multiple point of views (Gina, Leon - I didn’t care about these characters and their individual plot lines were irrelevant in this and previous books). Surprisingly we get 0 plot lines from Jack until a bit in the end. It didn’t make sense which character our Heroine ended up with because the entire book it seems that her feelings for him are diminished and she appeared ambivalent towards him. Also I strongly disliked how after professing his undying love for the heroine and asking her not to do anything in their apartment, Jack moves another woman into the same apartment. It just underlines the superficial nature of his feelings for her

Endings are hard to write

I know endings can be hard to write, so this started off pretty strong but ended pretty disappointing. I’m not going to go into why, but let’s just say Jess ends up with who I thought she would. I also feel like the ending wasn’t really an ending and there’s definitely more room for more books. It feels like this is a “I’m taking a break from this series and these characters” rather than this is it. The ending isn’t satisfying nor very conclusive.

1.50 🤮💀

I'M FREE!!!!!!!!!!! WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY FUCKING LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

6 books, each one more longer than the other, and multiple povs all for the story to end with a lot of plot holes 🙄
also, these books (author*) hate women so much, my god! All of them get treated like SHIT and yet they forgive and make excuses for the evilest things. Oh, and all women hate eachother so much because of, yes you guessed it, men 🥴🥴🥴🥴

I am so disappointed with the ending! I have read all 6 books with fervor and really enjoyed the push and pull, the angst, but I definitely feel cheated (pun intended) that when all is said and done our heroine does not make a decision between our 2 heroes. Ultimately one bows out cuz he can't hang sharing her, and while I don't blame him I think it's really lame it was yet another decision the men around her made that affected her life.

I'm not quite ready to accept this is the end of one of my most fav series! It has been a crazy 2.5 years of waiting patiently for each book to come out but now its the end and omg is it bittersweet!

“𝘐… 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳,”
“𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘪𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘮𝘦.”

Let's start with Sebastian... 🥺🥵🖤🩸 I think he turned into a character favourite very quickly during this series but, to me, this is the book that made him shine bright. You get his background, what he went through as a child and a young adult and it is utterly heartbreaking. You can't help but make excuses up for the way he is. He has had such a traumatic life and I really felt Jess could be the one to save him, but I don't think he wanted to be saved.... I loved him so much and cried for him the most, especially at the end😭. Lord I couldn't stop crying!

“𝘐’𝘮 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘐 𝘤𝘢𝘯’𝘵 𝘢𝘣𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘰𝘯 𝘢 𝘸𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘐 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱 𝘵𝘰 𝘢 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘰𝘯 𝘴𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴𝘯’𝘵 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘳𝘴 𝘰𝘧.”

Cam, my baby Cam❤️. I loved we got more of him in this series and you got to see his darker side, which I know I was craving 🤣. I did want more him and Jess but I loved how it flowed❤️ I loved that he just wanted the old, free and happy Jess back, this made me smile so much because he could see she was trapped and needed freeing. He would die for Jess, he put himself back in the dark to bring her out into the light and this, to me, is what true love is. The love he has for that woman is unconditional and it made my heart swell.

𝘐 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘻𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘮𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘐 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘯’𝘵 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘴, 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬.

Jack did brake my heart at points in this book. When Jess is in the kitchen humming and he starts to realise things. I cried so much because I was waiting for that moment. I feel like he got a part of closure in his life and this pleased me for him. He annoyed me at the end with some things he was saying to Jess but I feel anything that man says can rub me up the wrong way🤣

I loved the different pov. I love Gina, she started to become another fav of me so when something particular happens, you can understand why I was a complete mess! I'm glad certain things worked out the way they did. I was extremely happy a certain person got what was coming, ergh the hate I had!!

The ending... it does feel bittersweet. I feel like there is something there that could happen and it scares and worries me lol. It is a happy ending but my heart still feels panicked🤣. There was a certain scene that we were all waiting for and it did not disappoint at all! I cried so hard after reading this book for a certain character. I don't want it to be his ending and I'm praying it's not because I still feel like he has more to say 😉.

Thank you so much Monique, you have taken us on one hell of a journey and I will forever and always recommend this series. I will never forget about these characters, they will always stay with me. I can't wait to see what you write next😁❤️.

Personally, this series is way longer than it needed to be and it definitely dragged on. However, I still adequately enjoyed the series and appreciated the open-ended conclusion.

Dark

This book has many triggers and is not for everyone. This last book was so psychologically dark that I am borderline on it. It was so eerily scary but with the world today so very possible. The character's childhood abuse experiences compounded with adult abuse experiences make a sordid cocktail that make a sane person question validity. What a movie this would make in today's world!

I have been with this series from book one, and now we are finally at the end with book six, it answered those burning questions, more-so better than I could have ever expected.

Jessynia - continues to be drawn into the depths of The Society. She works tirelessly at making her marriage with Jack work, she loves him, her trust fragile, pushing Cameron away, in the process fighting her feelings for Sebastian and the way he makes her feel, validating his trauma, healing him the only way she knows how through her words, yet there are those that want her light extinguished.

Jack - uses s*x as a control method with Jessynia. He is determined to make up for the pain he has caused her, what he still causes her when through contractual obligation they are still required to attend Society meetings. He fears that Jessynia is pulling away from him, his control fraying as he deals with the emotions of his own trauma.

Cameron - feeling the loss of Jessynia, he is spiralling, the only way he can be close to her is to rejoin The Society, to endure their practices, toying with his emotions, causing him pain mentally and psychologically. He’ll do everything in his power to hold onto the memories and of everything he has with Jessynia, her strength giving him hope.

Sebastian - a man with many facets, the truths he hides, the trauma of his past, making him the man that he is, the demons that control him, the pure light of Jessynia he fights at every turn, her words attempting to break him, speaking to the depths of his soul, to heal him, for he has envisioned his own ending, a life where there is no redemption for the sins of the past and the present.

Alexandra - her own trauma speaks to the levels of which she will go to claim Jack and Cameron, to have them return back to the Society, as her puppets, her hatred and jealousy know no bounds, she blames other for her misgivings, taking no responsibility, yet she wants to extinguish the pure light that is Jessynia, for she threatens everything, her livelihood, yet it’s her obsession, her actions, her choices that lead to her untimely demise.

Steven - enjoys the abject humiliation of his wife Alexandra, there is no love loss between them, their marriage so toxic, for him she is only good for one thing, his wife is spiralling out of control, he attempts to use her as a scapegoat to save face, done with the way she humiliates him, yet her untimely demise leads to his own.

Cain - wields his power and control like an iron fist, anyone crosses him and or betrays him, pays the price. He expects obedience from his fiancée, and the wives of his three sons, but his relationship with Jack is volatile, and he knows how protective Jack is of Jessynia, yet nothing will stop him until he claims his ultimate prize.

Leon - is not a man who loves easily, there are facets to him, after all he’s seen and done, that he shares with a select few, and one he’ll make that sacrifice for, Gina, but at what cost to them both. For when Cain discovers the truth, he makes Leon suffer, yet he controls his emotions tightly, Cain, ultimately paying for his misdeeds.

Gina - gave up a promising career, in the name of love. She became Cain’s solely. Knowing who and what he is and what he does, she is left with no choice but to take what he gives, suffering the consequences and brunt of his frustrations and anger. Yet there is one, Leon, who accepts her and her him, there affair, so dangerous, on a knifes edge, yet when her deception is discovered, she pays the price for her betrayal, yet she doesn’t come out of her journey unscathed, with Leon by her side, her future promising.

Olivia - obsessed with Cameron, will do anything to have him look at her, but he’s only got eyes for Jessynia. He’s made is clear what there relationship is, but she wants more. Unbeknownst to Cameron, she is part of the Society, used as a puppet to bring Cameron to his knees and return him to the fold. Cameron feels betrayed when he discovers her duplicity, lucky for her, if Sebastian had discovered how deep her duplicity went, fortunately enough for her, she was given her freedom.

Beth - is on a path of self-destruction, mentally she has been unable to cope with what she had endured at the hands of the Society, at Sebastian’s hands. She has been using therapy as part of her healing process, but the demons she is fighting are too strong. For her to conquer these demons, she makes an untimely return to the Society to face her fears, yet one of her ultimate fears is what completely breaks her to the point of no return.

Darragh - a man of God, he hides his proclivities from the world, but with the Society, he can be who he is, and with Grace that’s exactly what he does. He repents through control and dominance with Grace, and she loves that about him, each giving and receiving. But he’s also a man with secrets, and the one woman who entrusted him the most with her’s, is sought by Sebastian to break the most cardinal sin of all, to betray Beth’s trust, by using her fear to break her completely, for this there will be no redemption.

This book has it all dark romance, possessive dominant alpha males, an emotionally sensitive female who gives as good as she gets, love, murder, madness, mayhem, revenge, vengeance, violence, trauma, defiance, adrenaline seeking suspense, jealousy, twists, turns, truths, deception and betrayal.

This story is told from multiple POV, it will take you on a wild ride, having you turn page after page, this book had me from the beginning to the end. Reading this story, it enables the  readers to really connect with the characters, and as the story unfolds the readers see the development and growth from the characters singularly and together.  The author definitely knows how to write and I’ll be coming back for more.

And those MM, MF, MFM s*x scenes, including those BDSM elements were steamy, yet sensual, dirty, hot, intense, physical, provocative, it had all the angry angst, hate, jealousy, pleasure and passion one would except when Jack, Cameron and Sebastian show Jessynia who they really are and takes them for all that they are, darkness and all. For they take what they want without consequence, each giving Jessynia the pain and pleasure she deserve, their possessive and obsessive need for control and dominance, it was off the charts and had all of the feels.

Cannot believe that this is the end of there story, but all good stories must come to and end, the sacrifice Jack made for Jessynia’s happiness was heartbreaking, yet the rejoice Cameron felt for finally having Jessynia back in his arms was bittersweet.

Despite there trauma, Jessynia and Cameron work well together in there own way, because nothing will come between them. They love each other, regardless of there differences, because they are in this together, they got there happily ever after which proves that Cameron is no short of being possessive, wicked and depraved, showing Jessynia who’s clearly in charge and who owns her heart, mind and body, it was oh so perfect, and one very well deserved for them all.

If I ever hear the words dense, hole, naked pubis or deviant ever again it will be too soon. It seems the author found a few words she really liked and decided to use them as many times as possible. As other reviewers have already said, this series was 3 books too long. The story had so much potential. The plot was exciting but it just went on and on with redundant dialogue and scenes. I love well written sex scenes but I was actually skimming a lot of the story starting with the second book, but by then I was already invested. I think if it wasn’t in KU I would have just given up.

Jessynia was annoying. It seems like the author couldn’t decide whether to make her gutsy or a doormat and that has nothing to do with her being a sub. I did like the different points of view, like Gina and Leon, because it gave us a break from all of Jessynia’s drama, although I just didn’t give a crap about a couple of those characters.

The ending was awful. The author said she left it open in case she wants to write more about the characters. It should have ended with the MMF or MFM tease. You can tell Jack and Cam really did love each other even if it didn’t continue as a sexual relationship. I think they both loved Jessynia enough to make it work.

If this story had been edited it could have become a favorite book. I think the writing improved as the series continued but the author is Canadian/British and used a lot of British slang. If you write a book set in NYC use American terms. If not, set it in Toronto or London.

I will try this author again. I think she has good plot ideas and potential. I wish I loved this book and really vacillated between a 2 or 3 rating so let’s split the difference and settle at 2.5.

Ignoring the obvious of how much I had to skim over repetition. SEBASTIAN DESERVED A BETTER ENDING! None of it makes sense. The ended was rushed. It left so much unanswered. It just left me feeling so unfulfilled and aggravated. I’m not even sure you can call this a happy ending. UGH. I’m angry for Sebastian. I’m forever annoyed at Jess. Confused with Jack and Cam deserves better.

worst FMC ever

Read book 1 and 2 .. skimmed 3 - 7 with the most terrible ending with we weakest FMC ever. With the most morbid moral compass. Dragged so much. One thing for sure the author can write definitely can’t take that away. Hoping her other books are not like this one.

The End of an Epic Journey - I would give this 10 stars if I could

I don’t know where to start with this review. Firstly, I was counting the days till it was released and then it took me months to build the courage to start this final chapter in the Blood Oak series, so invested in it, I was beside myself about how I wanted it to end. I started, and then paused for a couple of moths - again twisted with anxiety about how it would end and then I remembered it’s really the journey not the end that is important. Wow - I should have had more faith in Monique’s writing as I had already devoured the other books in this series and she DID NOT disappoint with this last instalment. Anyone who has invested in this series will know that this story is intense, crazy off the charts hot and so complex. I loved the sexual chemistry but it was the dialogue that completely drew me in - especially between Sebastian and Jess - reading Monique’s note at the end where she talked about how the characters talked to her and led her through their journey was excellent and it showed in her writing - the depth and level of engagement in the dialogue was fascinating and kept me entrapped. I love the various POVs, there are so many opportunities for spin-offs - I would love to know more about Darragh’s joinery - what happens to Beth and then Gabriel too(his engagement kind of faded in the end, which was interesting as he was a very important link in the journey). I was very happy with how Cain met his fate and the glimpses that we can see for Leon and Roses horizon. SPOILER ALERT - the fate of Alex was perfect, however, even though we know how deranged she had become - there’s still that important insight from her horrible past - another victim of childhood abuse and trauma with twisted ways to vent her bitterness across her life journey. As well, to see those monsters Frost and Vallen meet their fate was awesome - we don’t know what their history is insofar as childhood trauma - I think they are just outright bad people. The ending - perfect (for me) whilst it looks like Jess and SPOILER ALERT AGAIN - Cameron sail off into the sunset, there’s still so much going on. Jack’s exit was managed beautifully and respectfully. Whilst he was a villain at the start and so dominant (sometime’s I really hated him) his steps towards his inner growth and emotional maturity became so evident with his choice to let Jess find her own wings ( and that the are still connected) Cameron is my hero - yes, from a stable and loving family with easy access to wealth - but that made it so much more complex as he wasn’t dealing with the intensity of trauma so his mental battle was more acute, not being able to justify his slip into the Societies clutches - and the tragedy of how he was manipulated at a young age ( as it was for all). And then comes Sebastian… thank you Monique for not ending his journey - I truly believe he is out there and started to heal (albeit unwillingly) with the pureness of Jessnya’s intent that he could break through. His coping mechanisms and darkness was extreme but his inner strength and aura was so powerful, I connected to him and was very pleased with the way he and Jess consummated their intensity, that it was only once and it was revered. He found the light of love with her and hopefully starts to heal with time. This series cannot end - I agree that it needs time to settle, but there is so much more to give. PLEASE SOMEONE WRITE A SCREENPLAY so we can see this incredible story come to life on the big (or little) screen. This whole series is a big YES from me (now, how do I deal with my humungous book hangover?) 💕☺️

𝕽𝖊𝖛𝖎𝖊𝖜 𝖙𝖎𝖒𝖊... The Blood of Black Oak (Book Six) by Monique EdenWood.

I’ve been heavily invested in this series since the first book, and let me say OMFG. This is the final book in The Black Oak series and it's visceral, addictive, and encompassing in every way imaginable. Throughout the series, I’ve followed Jess (Jessynia) the compassionate and vulnerable female lead as she battled with her emotions and the repercussions of falling for another man after being cheated on for months by her husband (Jack). I was not too fond of Jack at first but fell in love with him once I understood who he was. Then I met Cam, the other guy, he wasn’t to my particular tastes but I understood what she valued in him.

As I dove further into the books, I met Sebastian who halted my breath in the best of ways and made every other man in the series vanish almost instantly, as if I’d never met them. Sebastian Gravier is dark, mysterious, eloquently spoken, and above all, he doesn’t hide who he is. He’s not afraid to admit what he wants and he knows how to get it. (I won’t lie, I was always rooting for him but won’t say which man ends up with Jess if any.)

Back to this epic series… Book six brings us an in-depth look at Sebastian's childhood and the trauma that plagued him even in his adult years forming much of the sexually deviant, bloodlust-driven man he is. This book is written with such ease, yet with such powerful scenes that my heart shattered for Sebastian as his story unfolded. There was so much growth for each of the men in this series including him, and the steamy moments were so intimately consuming that taking a break was nearly impossible. Monique EdenWood is at the top of the game when it comes to bringing bold, daring male characters and their sexual desires to life. This intricately woven, no holds barred, mind-blowing finale hits every emotion there is. By the end of this book, I can honestly say that it is a series I will read over again because it’s that stunning, AND HOT!!! I won’t tell you how it ends, but if you haven’t begun I suggest you do. There’s no going back once you start and trust me, you won’t want to.
Five stars are not enough.
WARNING: This series is rated 18+ and contains very dark themes and triggering content that may be disturbing to some readers. Please read responsibly.

Blood of the black oak
This is the love triangle or I should say the love square to define the century. Blood of the black oak is a brilliant romantic suspense, billionaire novel with exquisite passionate scenes. Jess is torn between her husband Jack who had betrayed her trust, Cameron who I sense brings her peace, and the sadistic Sebastian who somehow frightens and soothes her fears.

This book explores trauma, pain, fear, and love in great detail.
The characters are flawed and have suffered their own trauma and abuse. No character is perfect but this is what makes them feel real and not like cookie cutter characters.

Jess is empathic and kind. She wants to save people. She’s good and pure. Her heart is in the right place.
Jack might anger some people but I see the web of manipulation he’s caught up in and what he’s endured. He does what he can to be the best for the woman he calls his angel.
Cameron is caught in the same darkness. He’s more sensitive, but he’s intelligent and virtuous. I have a soft spot for him.
Sebastian… oh Sebastian he will always be my favourite character. While the other characters wrestle with the darkness, he embraces it. Despite his darkness he has his own morality and respects consent.

This book is a beautiful albeit emotional heartbreaking end to a series I’ve fallen in love with. I recommend this book to all lovers of non-stereotypical cookie cutter romance. People who want real characters. Readers who are seeking out beautifully written trauma.
May this book help you find light in the darkness.
Begin with enter the black oak and make your way through the dark forest of deceit, forgiveness, pain, torment, and ultimately a love story like no other.

:::::spoilers::::

First let me say, this could have been a whole book if not two shorter. There is so much back and forth over the same topics of conversation and Jess always acts like it's a new revelation each time. I did enjoy the multiple POVs as it added more depth to some characters knowing their thoughts or seeing things from another character's perspective who were not central to the story. I loved how Jack's character came around toward the end and his last scene with Jess broke my heart. I always figured she would end up with Cam, but that scene had me doubting myself. It was also painful knowing her love for Cam was deeper than he was trying to tell himself that it was. Sebastian's ending was inevitable and he alluded to it himself. That whole scene really didn't have to play out the way it did, but he made sure it did. Self-fulfilling prophecy I suppose.
I strongly disliked how Gabriel was just kind of up in the air. She suspected him for 2 books and said nothing and his last scene alluded to him playing both sides of the coin?? The ending leaves things open for another book which undoubtedly will happen. I already have theories of how it will play out.
Given the dark nature of the series, I expected the end of Alex and Vallen to be much more than it was.
Overall great storyline and series, just be prepared to spend a whole book talking about everyone's trauma over and over (book 5) and repeat conversations over Jack's possessive nature, how in love Cam is and how dark Sebastian is and how horrible Alex is.... the book was too detailed for its own good. I hope she re-edits the book at some point!

Every once in a while, a series comes along that draws you in, or maybe more accurately, crawls inside you and commands a place within you. Monique Edenwood’s Black Oak is such a series.

A six book, dark billionaire romance series, Black Oak is so much more than that. Edenwood introduces readers to the sexy and sinister side of secret societies with rich, evocative language that is as decadent and seductive as her characters are deep and deviant. She invites readers to explore the quality of light and darkness that is within us all while asking us to consider how far into the darkness we may venture before the darkness enters us.

In a less learned hand, Black Oak’s cast could have become comedic stereotypes of narcissists, despots, and victims, but—instead, Edenwood crafts believable, albeit flawed characters, even the worst of whom readers will empathize with even as they despise them.

In the series finale (for now), the major overarching themes and plot come to an at times heart-wrenching conclusion that, in keeping with its dark romantic roots, leaves us aching at its end. A glimmer of hope is offered, though, as the author leaves doorways to this dark grove unlocked and plants seeds of the possibility of revisiting the main characters in the future.

At nearly 900 pages, Blood of Black Oak is a marathon worthy of the training garnered in reading the previous five books, and absolutely must be read in order. It is quintessentially dark romance with all that entails, and not for the faint of heart.

If you haven’t begun this series, I highly recommend you “Enter the Black Oak” today.

This series was amazing in its depth and the details of the characters and the world around them. I enjoyed the level of spice this series had and appreciated the the thought that went into designing the characters and their background that made them who they were. It was a hard read at times because of dealing with the characters childhood trauma, and degradation of women- which seemed to be an outside manifestation of untreated trauma in the context of this book. Definitely not a series for the faint of heart or anyone younger then 18, in my opinion. The exploration of trauma and its effect on how people function was fascinating. Monique Edenwood wove that into her story here so well!
Over all, I felt there were some things like the drama that felt a little drawn out at times, but over all, I really enjoyed this book series and hope there will be at least one revisit to these characters in the future. The ending of the series- the last 3-4 chapters or so, still
haunt me. I still tear up about it even though I finished it a while ago. If anything, I think that is a good sign that a story/series is good.

Perfection!

I've been blown away by this author and this series.....amazing is an understatement!
When I started the Black Oak series I never in my wildest dreams invisiged all the twists and turns that these characters would endure and what an emotional read it would turn out to be. Monique really let us inside the characters minds, let us hear there internal battles as they fought against darkness, lust, society standards and most of all love!
Jess I admit is not the usual heroine I like, but I admire her compassion and love for the dominant and possessive men in her life....her story is breath taking and has gripped me all the way through!
Lastly I know that ending will not please everyone, it certainly wasn't my first choice of ending.....I do however think it fits these characters and the journey of discovery and healing they have been on and most of all it has left the door open for more of them in the future and that I would definitely like to see!! This was a thoroughly riveting read and I can't wait for more from this author!!!

Finished the book and was glad to see the series is over yet the ending still felt incomplete and left we wanting more. It certainly didn't feel like a HEA.

The reason for the rating was that for me personally I loved the detailed mindset of the MCs and the detail that Monque goes into in her writing it is definitely kiss to the fingers perfection, just for me, there are a lot of characters in here that I really couldn't care less about and I found that within this book and the later books I felt that the MCs became lost. I also personally would have liked to here more from Jack and just stuff that happened in general just didn't feel like characters would do that, like Jack giving jess so many opportunities to wonder off to see the other men like she did when he is a possessive alpha male.

I dont know, for me personally I wanted this series to be over with as with the characters but I felt disheartened at the end when it wasn't but could have been, plus I couldn't also be the only one hoping to have read a harem moment scene at the end with all of them...can I?

Black Oak series review

I would recommend this series to anyone who is willing to feel raw emotion and a willingness to desire, hate, love and want for all of the characters.
This series may have billionaire in the title but its not about money nor does the story fantasize about it.
I have never read a series that has pulled me in and made me feel so much as Black Oak has.
I am touched by their love. I breathed in their pain. I had shivers while experiencing their raw passion.
I am grateful for being brought into their past to learn what unbalanced those who moved into the darkness. It helped me feel so much differently for them.
The ending left me feeling conflicted and full of want inside but are thankful that Monique left us with heart felt words and truth of why it ended how it did. There was no other way to end such a series.
Although I truly understand why it ended as it did I can't help but feel I need more. So much more.
I think to myself that this has to continue and hope to see more Black Oak in the future.

Jesus of Nazareth this was a JOURNEY. At times I felt like giving up with this series but the end of each book kept sucking me back in and now I’m a bit sad it’s ended to be honest.

Definitely devastated she didn’t end up with Sebastian though, the chemistry was B E A utiful even if was a low-key a bit psycho so I don’t know what that says about me….

All in all I really enjoyed this series however I do have some questions…

Who the frig is Lydia and why was Jack with her? I thought she would be a part of the story in some way but noooo…

What was the point of Darragh? 😅

What happened to Beth? And Gabriel? And all the other random people we got POVs for and started to get invested in (that I wasn’t mad about truthfully) only to never to be heard from again?

What was Grace’s story? She was so intriguing but we never got to find out more!

Why was Christian so creepy?

WHERE IS SEBASTIAN?!

Am leaving my review here before I go slightly delulu but if you don’t have any plans for the next month I’d highly recommend giving this series a go.

Emotions galore…Excellent series

This series simply induced a spectrum of emotions, some I didn’t even know I could feel. But this is bound to happen when the creativity of an extremely talented word crafter, like Monique, decides to take our feelings on a dizzying roller coaster.
The characters are formidable and so well defined. Jess and her loves, Jack, Cameron and Sebastian are perfect due to their imperfect nature and vices. The plot is capturing the reader from the very beginning. You can’t help but wonder and speculate through the entire series how this story would conclude. For now. Clearly the door is open for more, eventually.
I’m sure the readers had different perspectives and a favorite duo to end up together. And I did too and for me, the conclusion was what I envisioned all along. For now!
Thank you Monique, for bringing me these four characters who’ll always live in my soul!

Of all the books, this was probably the best.

The ending was not what I wanted but as the author wrote in her notes at the end, it was what made the most sense.

The three male characters in this series are all toxic, traumatized and broken people.

My heart broke the most for Sebastian, I thought.

But at the end of this book? I think it broke the most for Jack.
It takes a lot for a tear to escape me - and I will be honest, there was been MUCH cringe in this series but I did cry towards the end of this book.
Jacks entire story has sort of broken me.

Cam was the wild card. I always wondered how he was going to fit in. He was the most level and consistent of the three I felt. He never wavered from her.

Did I get what I wanted in the end? For one scene, yes I did. And author, I would have hunted you down if you had not written it. So. Count your lucky stars. Also? Yeah. It was smoking 🥵

Oh how wrong I was about it all.
