This can't be it. We've been best friends for years. We can't just be... nothing.
Cindy
The summer before I left for basic training, I was determined to tell Luke Kane how I felt about him. Maybe nothing would come of it. Maybe he’d laugh. Maybe he’d let me down easy. Maybe he’d tell me that we were perfect the way we were. As friends. Best friends. But… just friends. Before I left Blue Creek forever, I needed Luke to know that I was in love with him. But I never even got the words out. Before I could say anything, Luke’s entire life was turned upside down and nothing between us was ever going to be the same again. I got on a plane and left Blue Creek with a broken heart. And, ten years later, when I came back, everything else was broken too.
Luke
Looking into Cindy’s eyes that night, I felt like I was on top of the world. My whole future was laid out in front of me. I was finally getting the hell out of a too-small town where everybody knew too much about everybody else. And I was hanging out in the back of my truck with Cindy Lawless. How had I never noticed how pretty my best friend was? Had I always wanted to kiss her this badly? Too bad fate wasn’t on my side that night. Or for the next ten years. But when Cindy Lawless walked into the bar one night, I realized something important. My feelings for her hadn’t gone anywhere. Were Cindy and I finally going to get to be together? Or were we both so stuck in the past that we’d ruined our chances at a future?

This is a very interesting story with many special people, details, situations, and emotions‼️ I loved it and am starting the next book in the series immediately❣️💕
Not bad, I thought THE ONLY ONE was a quick and cute read. A long time skip in the very beginning was a change from what I normally read, and I thought that was a good idea. I didn't personally feel like Cindy grew too much from her high school years - it has been ten years, after all, and yet I didn't quite get the vibe that she was over Luke or not just reliving what "could have been".
I can understand loving someone still even through some time, however, she knew he wasn't available and had (apparently) been working to get over him, but she jumped right back into her feelings the second she could. I would have liked a bit more time for her to get back into the swing of loving Luke.
(This isn't a comment on this book, necessarily, but I read the prologue/sneak peek of the second book which is about Carter and a mom with a kid named Rex, who we already met in the first one. However, the prologue describes the current time after Cindy and Luke's conclusion, and Carter is just now meeting the mom and her son. Cindy had an entire interaction with Carter and Rex in THE ONLY ONE, which doesn't make sense time-wise unless it was an error.) That being said, there were a few errors I found in this book.
I received a free ARC and am leaving a voluntary and honest review.
This is such a quick and easy read with mild angst. Luke and Cindy has been Best friends since high school. One final moment to confess her love to Luke before she departs for the army and Cindy was devastated to know something and it changed the trajectory of their lives. Years passed and both are adult struggling with their careers and lives, Luke and Cindy found their paths are not so tricky anymore and they still find their attractions towards each other and it's up to them to navigate and make decision to be able to achieve their second chance at love. This is my first time to read something for this author and I must say that her books are quite interesting and I would love to know more.
I voluntary review this book in exchange of an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book. I had trouble putting it down so desperate to know what will happen next . This is small town second chance romance but I don’t want to want to give much away I can’t wait till the next book come out !!!
Small town hometown return. Cindy returns to her hometown after ten years of being in the Army. Home isn't all she remembered it to be, so much that it doesn't feel like home anymore at all. She's returning to see her sister but she'll also have to face her high school best friend, Luke, who she was madly in love with but he didn't quite return the feeling. I'm on the fence with this book. I'm not sure if I liked it. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I almost enjoyed Cindy & her sister Stephanie's reunion more than her and Luke's. I felt that once Cindy and Luke got their chance at something it was more like it was just Cindy having an adolescent fantasy coming true but not really a real feeling. Even though she'd been deployed in the service for a decade, she knew she still had some growing up to do. Again, I think I enjoyed her journey to find herself more than her journey to find a bond with Luke. Overall, I liked it but it was just okay here and there.
(I received a complimentary copy of this book from Hidden Gems)
This is an adorable small town, second chance romance. I read the second one first but it didn’t detract from this storyline. I love teen romance breakup get back together as adults that have worked on their issues stories, the people are flawed and damaged but still 100% worthy of love. This was adorable and like a warm hug. I wish there was a bit more spice but otherwise a good read.
I thought the book was alright. I just didn't connect with them as much as I hoped to. It's about unfinished business and unresolved feelings from the 2 main characters. 3.5 stars
Life is messy and things don’t always happen when or how you want them to. This message is a central theme of this book, at least for Luke and Cindy. This is definitely true as it relates to the ups and down of their friendship - possible relationship - possible end to their renewed friendship or the current status of them whatever it is on a continually changing basis.
High school best friends (and secretly in love with Luke), Cindy is just a few days away from leaving for Boot Camp decide she is ready to tell him her feelings for him are much deeper than friends. Her plan doesn’t happen how she planned it to go and she is left heart broken, and leaves town not to communicate with Luke for 10 years.
This book has a LOT of emotional angst going on, and the characters realize they need to work through emotional hang ups that are over a decade old. Working through their emotions and hang ups is very messy and at times as prone to giving themselves (and readers) emotional whiplash.
It took me several chapters before I really felt any real of connection to the two main characters or the storyline. There are several secondary characters that will apparently be the focus of future books in the series who interested me - the Kane brothers Carter and Elias along with their best friend Kieran definitely seem interesting.
This was a book that didn’t excite me, but I definitely didn’t hate it. My reaction to and opinion of this book was probably heavily influenced by reading a phenomenal book just prior to this one, so I had a big let down while reading this book and all the emotional angst which isn’t my thing. I enjoy a little angst, but drama-fests aren’t my thing. Since my viewpoint was a bit skewed on this, I’m giving this book a 4-star rating even though it felt more like a 3-star. I definitely don’t want to dissuade anyone from giving this book or series a try. My preferences may be very different from yours!
I received an ARC from the author and Hidden Gems; and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
If I have to sum up my impression on this book in a couple words, I would say totally relatable. I loved it. Amelia Mae manages to create one of the most “real” couples I have ever read about. Their story is something not farfetched. They could literally be people you know.
Luke and Cindy knew each other as teenagers – they were best friends – although more intimate feelings were lurking below the surface. Cindy was able to acknowledge them more quickly than Luke, but they were there for him too nonetheless. Then, life altering events happen. Cindy and Luke meet again ten years later and the pull is still there. But they have many bridges to cross. They need to work on themselves first and foremost before they “find” each other. They are not perfect. They are flawed. But their flaws, the way they face their feelings and the way their story progresses feels so real. Something that could happen to you or someone you know. It’s not always right or perfect. There were times I wanted to smack them both on the head and yell at them. But the way to happiness is not an easy one and there is not a “right” way to do it. Sometimes it is found through try and error – and this is portrayed here perfectly.
All in all, it was an excellent, emotional read. 5 well-worthy stars from me. I highly recommend it.

Luke and Cindy were best friend since freshmen in high school. Cindy was ready to make a confess her love to Luke when Luke's girlfriend showed up to tell him she is pregnant. That changed course of life for both. Luke was planning to join the marine but had to get married and Cindy left for military. 10 years passed, Cindy is back and will face Luke soon but she is not sure if she is ready to settle down and face her past. She has been hiding and her sister is trying to get her settle in the town but it's not easy road for Cindy and she is not ready to live in same town as Luke yet. Luke has been miserable since he divorced his high school girlfriend and trapped in work to fulfill her father's death wish. He thinks he is doing what he needs to do but his family knows he needs to move on. Now Luke and Cindy can have their closure or second chance at love. Will they finally get to tell each other how they felt or move on. This was easy and quick read and about friends to lovers. I can't wait to read about Luke's brothers. I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving complimentary copy.
Through life we go through up and downs. Not everything goes as well as we plan, but every once in a while we get a second chance. The summer before Cindy left for basic training, she was determined to tell Luke her best friend, that she was in love with him. But she never got the words out before Luke’s entire life was changed in the blink of an eye and nothing between them remained the same for almost a decade. Cindy returns home to the small town of Blue Creek ten years later and does her best to avoid Luke. But when Luke sees Cindy After 10 years, he realized his feelings for her are deeper than friendship. Would the two of them have a do over or are they so stuck in the past that they ruined a second chances in the present. I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily leaving a review. I could not put the book down and enjoy the different characters in the story. Luke was stuck for 10 years depressed and going through the motions. When Cindy returns to Blue Creek, Luke finally broke out of the everyday routine and start finding joy in life again.
The Only One is the first book in Amelia Mae’s new series ( The Brothers Cane ) and what a fantastic start it is . From the moment I started reading I was 100% hooked not only by the flawlessly written story , full of love and second chances, heartbreak, emotion, angst , intrigue and many surprises. Not to mention two of the most likable, relatable and unique characters you could ever want to meet . Best friends to lovers is one of my all time favorite tropes and Amelia did such a amazing job entwining it In this heartfelt and emotionality charged Story of friendship that turn into so much more than either expected . I’m not going to give any details away as I genuinely think that to fully appreciate how phenomenal this book is you should go in with a completely open mind . What I will say is that it’s not often I come across a book that has the ability to captivate me the way Cindy and Luke’s journey has done , it truly is a emotional rollercoaster and should not be missed
4* Difficult relationship. Cindy returns home after 10 years, having left the military due to an injury and disappointed with a desk job being unable to do active service. Luke is the man who she has loved for years, but never told because when she was about to tell him, his girlfriend blurted out she was pregnant. Luke is unhappy and dismissive about things. He did not want to, but married to do the right thing, but shortly after Emmeline miscarried and they divorced. He lives at home resentful of his mother, his job and life in general..he is doing his duty whilst everyone else does what they like. This couple's relationship is fraught and frustrating..on/off kilter, rudderless at times, uncertain at others. Luke is inconsistent and Cindy is weak in regards to her thoughts and deeds where he is concerned. They both lack something in their moral fibre; with emphasis on the past of what could have been, it is repetitive and tedious at times.
Luke and Cindy were best friends in high school, although they each a secret crush on each other. In the blink of eye, their post-high school plans changed. While Cindy went into the military, Luke stayed behind in their small town and took over family construction business. Flash forward 10 years, Cindy has returned to their small town and is trying to decide her next steps. Her sister Stephanie is so excited to have her back in town and wants her to stay. But now that they are in the same place again, Luke and Cindy have to sort through the past 10 years and what their relationship can be now. It takes a lot of starts and stops for them to find their way. They are both at a cross-roads in their lives - I think a lot of people can identify with that.
This is the first book in a new series of books about Luke and his brothers. I look forward to reading the next book.
This was Luke & Cindy’s book. This was an emotional read for me. Loved it. And am voluntarily leaving my review.
I received an ARC of this novel through Hidden Gems for my honest review..
The only one, in my opinion, was a quick and easy read. I read the entire thing in a day. At times, I felt like the writing was a bit immature and amature. I felt at times, the way the author worded things, was copied , to the word, from other novels and movies. It caught me by surprise and made me hesitate with how I felt about the book. I was at times lost with the story line. It felt like the chapters where set at future dates with no explanation as to how the books couple got to that certain point with no reasoning to the previous chapter story line. Again, I realize, I have received an ARC. So there is good chance some of these things will change. Overall, I did enjoy the story line and I love a happy ending. So thank you for that..
Slow build friends to lovers The Only One (the Kane Brothers Book 1) by Amelia Mae is a friends to lovers romance. Luke and Cindy have a history of friendship that lost its way as high school graduation and future plans are made, changed and seized. One would think reconnecting with someone so important would be easy, but for these two it'a anything but easy. The plot demonstrates how much time has changed them and in some instances beaten them down. In some respects they shore each other up, that allows them to make decisions for their futures. Overall, Luke and Cindy really want each other, they just needed some time in their new life situations to see where the other fits. The HEA clearly demonstrates they find their way to their perfect happiness. I read an ARC of this book and voluntarily share my review.
Luke Kane and Cindy Lawless were best friends from way back. However, Cindy started to have feelings for Luke that were more than friendly. Finally, just when she got the nerve to tell him, something unexpected happens that changes the course of both their lives.
Fast forward ten years, Cindy is back in town and Luke sees this as a second chance with Cindy, but has too much time gone by? Is Cindy interested? Will they be able to make it work? You need to read to find out.
This book was good. I enjoyed it but thought adults would have communicated better. Dialogue was good, secondary characters were developed well so that you can read more books in the series. Each Kane brother will have a story. Book includes a snippet from the next book as well as from other works by the author. Overall, a good second chance story. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this title.
I read this pretty quickly. Cindy comes back to town and Luke's heart skyrockets because he doesn't really live his life he is just going through the motions, and Cindy's comeback pushes him to do more of what makes him happy. However, he was a jerk in the past (glancing at the relationship with his ex) so I kinda don't feel bad for him at all.
While Cindy thrived and succeeded in being the best of the best only to land hard after an injury, which leaves her all shades of messy, trying to find her place again outside of the warzone.
As they spend time together “as friends” lines and blurred and decisions are made that affect their relationship and future.
Life is complicated and messy and things don’t always happen when or how you want them to and that kinda relates to both of our main characters.
I am voluntarily leaving this review. This is the first time I have read anything by this author, and she did not disappoint. The characters were relatable, the storyline was great with the right amount of drama and suspense, I couldn’t put it down!
Cindy and Luke were best friends in high school. When Cindy had a chance to express her feelings, a bomb was dropped in her lap which left her unable to express herself. Now ten years later, they have a chance to make things right but will the rising stress Luke is going through be to much and block their second chance?
I can’t wait to read about the rest of the Kane brothers and figure out how their lives turn out. I definitely recommend this book.
3.5 stars. Friends to lovers is a genre that I really enjoy and have read many stories with this theme. This story fell in the middle. It wasn't bad, but it didn't blow me away either. The the hot/cold nature of the H & h was annoying at one point. The martyr syndrome that Luke had, while seeming to be resolved by the job/house change, and the love of a good woman of course, I do wonder how soon that attitude would resume. The book also had a few consistency issues, not deal breakers, but annoying none the less. Overall, a decent friends to lovers that will have you laughing, crying and wanting to shake a character or two. *I received an ARC of this book and this is my voluntary and honest review.
I love a good best friends romance. This book has a lot of elements which I personally like, small town story, best friends turned lovers, high school drama and more! Cindy is Luke’s tomboy best friend who he met in freshman year. I would have liked to read about how they met and the first interaction they had, how she fell in love with him but this story starts with them being best friends already and Cindy ready to confess that her feelings are developed beyond friendship. But sometimes plans don’t go accordingly and we get to see how a missed opportunity leads to lives being turned upside down. Lovely read!
This book was relatively a good read. I truly enjoyed the book the characters are great and actually felt like people you meet everyday. Like was raw open and you felt his pain and depression at times and I felt myself saying come on “Luke you got this”. A heartfelt friends to nonexistent friend to lovers to broken hearts then Lovers again. Cindy finally having courage and then her courage is ripped out of her hands and she runs and buried it like so many of us do. Amelia made this book feel like it’s real people good people. I definitely look forward to getting to know more characters “people”.

Amelia Mae’s first book in her ‘The Brothers Kane’ series left me feeling a little bit raw. It’s a friends to lovers romance that messes with your emotions. Luke and Cindy, the main characters, have been best friends since freshman year of high school. On the night of their senior bonfire, things were about to change for them. Oh it did but not in the way they planned. This story was a slow burn which sometimes made me want to scream and pull my hair out. But yet it was so riveting I couldn’t put it down until the very last page. Highly recommended and definitely a MUST read!
This was a wonderful story of best friends in high school that secretly wanted each other but was afraid to say anything. It made them miserable but they tried to hide it. After graduation she left town to move on. But it wasn’t to be. Ten years later she moves back and doesn’t know what to do with her life. Her best friend is still there but will they get back together? Or will one say something to the other and see if they have more than just friendship? I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Grab a box of tissues before you start this one… you’re definitely going to need them! What a wonderful read…it’s got a wonderful storyline; beautiful characters; plot twists and turns that make you crazy; and enough angst before the HEA that you’ll be spitting nails! It’s a really difficult and often heartbreaking story that you need to grab today! Don’t let this one get by you…(I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book and cried my eyes out it was so darn good!!)❤️❤️❤️
This was such a good story. Luke and Cindy have been best friends throughout high school. Cindy has loved Luke the whole time, but Luke has been clueless. Cindy is about to leave for boot camp and has decided to finally tell Luke her feelings. But that doesn’t happen. It’s been ten years since Cindy left and talked to Luke. And now she’s back. Their story is full of angst. With a happy hea. A great start to the series, I can’t wait for Carters story next.
It's well setup with a good storyline, great characters, some romance and a roller coaster fo emotions. Those emotions were sometimes hard to detangle, but everything works out well in the end.
Readers who like tight knit family/small town stories with drama will love this book. Can't wait to read the next one !
I received a free copy of this book, offered to me by the author, and I'm leaving a review voluntarily.
