Sue Roberts has written a sweet savory story filled with fun, friendship, and food! This book was bursting with everything I love in a summer read: a beautiful setting, amazing characters, lovely friendships, and delectable treats. Oh and I cannot forget about the cherry on top... a second chance romance. If the romance is the cherry on top then the humor is the nuts, so many laugh out loud moments! So let’s recap: gorgeous setting✔️ delightful characters✔️ strong friendships✔️ sweet romance✔️ tremendous laughs✔️ glorious food✔️

LivIs a baker and a single mom to 20-year-old Jake. Jake has recently come home from University not only is he moaning about his coursework, but he is beginning to vocalize that he really would like to get to know his father. This is complicated and requires Liv revisiting her past, France and a summer fling. When Liv’s aunt reaches out to ask her to come stay with her in France and help with her bakery, it offers the perfect opportunity for Liv to hunt down baby daddy Andre. But how will Andre react not only to seeing Liv after 20 years, but to finding out he is a father? Sounds pretty serious, but that certainly is not the tone of the story. It is a lighthearted, uplifting, fun story. Liv is a fabulous character and I loved her relationship with her friends. The setting was divine and Sue Roberts’ descriptive writing swept me away to France while reading. A quintessential Summer read that will make you smile and crave cake!

Life is being very good to Olivia. She has given up an unfulfilling teaching job and has opened her own bakery. Liv has also managed to raise a son all on her own, with the aid of her parents. While visiting from university, her son, Jake, comes home a bit disillusioned about his courses. More seriously, he is bemoaning the fact that he never met his father. Liv decides to visit France, where she spent many summers with her Aunt Gen, to try and discover the whereabouts of Jake's father, Andre.

When Liv arrives at her aunt's home and bakery, her first order of business is to help her aunt while she recovers from surgery. However, in the back of her mind she knows she must begin asking around about Andre. It has been twenty years, and she has not seen him since she was eighteen years old. It was a first love for both of them, but during the summer they were together, Andre often told Liv of his desire to travel the world, and that he did.

How is Liv going to find him for Jake? As it happens, she does find Andre. So now the question is, how things will go, not just for Jake and his father, but for Liv and Andre themselves? With the support of friends Faye and Jo, Liv does the best she can to make her son happy. In so doing this gives her a chance to see where her heart, and future, lie.

What a sweet story. As much as this turned out to be a wonderful romance, there was humor included that pushed the story along. It helped to break up the seriousness of the situation of the fact that Liv had to find Andre. There was also a lot of good food in this book! Whether it was baked delicacies or fine French cuisine, it was indeed mouth-watering. I thoroughly enjoyed this book by Sue Roberts and look forward to reading more of her in the future.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC to review in exchange for my honest opinion.

Well this book had the perfect blend of everything I love in this genre. A relatable main character, cakes and lots of delicious sounding food, dash of romance and best of all solid friendships. Top it off with some laugh out loud moments and you really are onto a winner.

Liv felt like an old friend within minutes of me starting this book. The friendship between her and her two friends was so great to read of. I loved that no matter what, these three always make time to do stuff together. Obviously it all helps that all three of them are single. I have to quickly mention Jo, the parts to do with her dog walking had me in hysterics. This really would make a great romantic comedy on the big screen.

A lot of the story is set in France of which the author through her writing, transported me along for the ride. I so enjoyed reading and getting to know the area better as well as the people. I was quite ready to back my things and move there until reality set in but was nice for a while.

A Very French Affair is a truly fabulous, laugh out loud read that I devoured whole heartedly. It really was such a fun, uplifting and heart warming story. Whether you take it on the beach, the plane, the back garden, wherever you go this summer, make sure to have a copy with you.

My thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.

I love the cover of this book. It truly emanates that relaxing feeling of summer and goes perfectly well with the story. The characters were relatable and fun, the plot was entertaining and the setting was described in a beautiful way. The story didn’t feel unrealistic and the chemistry between the protagonist and her love interest worked like a charm. This was a great book to read on a relaxing day at the beach or on your place of comfort.

Olivia is a thirty something, single mom, a baker/cake artist living in England. When her just turning adult son, Jack, expresses how much he resents not having his father, Olivia decides to travel back to her aunt’s bakery/home in France where she met Andre’. Andre’ was her summer fling, her first love and the father of her son who she lost touch with because he went traveling after Olivia returned home to England.

This book we leave you hungry and read to bake with the descriptive creations the characters are concotting. On the plus side, Sue Roberts shares the recipes if you are so included to hit the kitchens.

A Very French Affair was a warm and easy summer read. Sweet situations, family and friendships with little to no conflict that was character internal dialog contrived. I liked A Very French Affair but in the end it was just a like.

I received this ARC copy of A Very French Affair from Bookouture. This is my honest and voluntary review. A Very French Affair is set for publication July 5, 2019.

This is a tasty treat, guaranteed to have your sweet tooth working overtime with some of the delicious cakes and bakes that feature so strongly in this heartwarming story!

It is twenty years ago that Liv went to stay with her Aunt Gen, learning to bake and falling in love for the first time. It was only on her return home that she discovered the consequences of that love but by then her love, Andre, was travelling the world and they lost touch. Now, however, their son Jake is wanting to know more about his father. . . . .

Liv agrees to look for Andre when she returns to stay with and look after her Aunt who is about to have an operation. Thirty-eight year old Liv now has her own cake making business and she leaves it to help run her Aunt's bakery whilst she's incapacitated. She has no idea where to start her search for Andre, but at least she's hopefully in the right country!

This book is tagged as a beach read but, whatever the weather around you, the author takes her readers on a journey to the south of France, to eat different delicious cakes and learn a little French along the way. There are a multitude of fantastic characters in this story, including Liv's friends whose escapades definitely had me laughing out loud at times. This is a great, very entertaining, 'feel good' second chance romance that I have absolutely no hesitation in highly recommending - even if you're no where near a beach!

I requested and was gifted a copy of this book via NetGalley and this is my honest review after choosing to read it.

A wonderful holiday read, I would have loved to have read this poolside, in the sun, drinking a cocktail, as it would have transported me even more into the pages of this book. As it was I was reading it on a miserable bank holiday weekend and the only warmth I could feel was as I was soaking up the sun in the South of France virtually!

And Sue Roberts is fast becoming one of my favourite authors, I just love her storytelling and the books which are all good are getting better and better each time.

I adored A Very French Affair - with its cake, French food, South of France location, bakeries, cake, a search of a lost love, friends and family, sunshine... and did I mention cake?!!

Yes the cakes were delicious sounding, but given Liv runs her own custom cake business, you would hope it features a lot, plus she goes over to France to look after her aunt's bakery, while she has surgery so there really are a lot of sugary treats in this book.

In amongst it all though it Liv who is trying to look for the boy (well man now), that she fell in love with at aged 18, and has a constant reminder of. After all her son is now wanting to know more about his father, and Liv has no idea where he might be.

This is just a really lovely book to read, and there is plenty to laugh at. I loved getting to know everyone in France, the daily brief french lessons where I'm glad to say I understood the French, Olivier the playboy who is also helping out in the bakery, and then back home Liv's best friend Jo's dog walking anecdotes are priceless.

A truly enjoyable story that kept me thoroughly entertained, and if you haven't tried this author before, and love great beach reads set in the sun, then I would recommend you try her out, if not on this book than any of her others, they are all fab!

Thank you to Bookouture and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

A cute story but it struggled a lot. First person is hard to do and it didn’t work here. I never felt like Olivia tried very hard to find Andre or support her son either.

I was so happy to read another book from Sue Roberts! And this is one of her best novel! It's well written, the characters are well developed and I loved following them. I also loved the fact that this story takes place in Antibes, France. What a lovely setting for a book! i could almost feel there myself! I also liked the plot and Olivia's research to find the father of her 20 year old son who was also her first love. So much is happening in this book (but not too much), you never get bored. A real page turner! Perfect holiday read that also can be read all year round!

I recently went on a bit of an e-book buying spree. E-books are currently miles and above cheaper than real books because real book shops aren't open therefore any books sold on Amazon are more or less full price or not available so I had to get my books in a new way, so I dug my Kindle out and recharged it. (I don't MIND paying full price for books, fyi, just sometimes the vast hardback vs kindle price difference is just too much)

Anyway, I thought I was reading A Night In Paris, but it turns out I was reading A Very French Affair. Easy mistake to make, they're both set in France, however at least 10 times I wondered to myself ...this isn't Paris. This is set in Antibes. There has been no mention of Paris. Where did they get the title from? Well, turns out, that's a title for an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT book.

I must confess, I didn't really like A Really French Affair. It was fine. It did everything a romance novel should do, but, i mean, that was it. It ticked all the boxes, almost as if I literally had a list in front of me, but it didn't make me feel anything. It's a shame as the story was interesting, the characters were okay, it all just felt rote to me and I don't know if that's because I've turned into a horrible cynic who can't see the goodness in the world, or if this was poorly written (to me, anyway).

I wanted a fun, summer read and it was, I guess. Like genuinely, it did what it promised on the tin.

Liv is a cake maker by trade, Sam who is into vintage clothing is her assistant in her cake making business attached to her home for productivity and also is training at a local catering college.

Baked To Perfection is her passion and her family particularly her aunt in France was a great baker, with her parents off touring in a campervan now into their retirement and her son back at home after being away at university and questioning about his father, she finds herself thinking back to her first love André from when she was eighteen and in France at her aunt's with Faye her life long best friend when they were eighteen.

Liv worries about Faye as she drinks a lot and is always out at gigs looking for a fun time, as her friend regales them with tales of Harold and her matchmaking attempts, in France Faye finds a fun time with Olivier a bakery helper to Liv's aunt and she

herself finds André from pure chance and as the pair get reacquainted she has to decide how to approach the subject of his son.

Jake also hides a few secrets from his mum which when he shows up in Spain unexpectedly come out about the truth behind his future plans...

The book started off on an hilarious note about a cake being made as a toilet and who isn't going to be drawn in by that sentence! I loved the journey to France and discovering the whole chemistry over the history with Andre and couldn't put it down I liked the pace of the book and the characters where super relatable as I'm sure in real life people have been in this position before!

Many thanks to the publishers for allowing me to review this book for them!

Last year I got the chance to read My Big Greek Summer by Sue Roberts and I quite enjoyed reading it. So when I saw that her new book was set in the South of France, I had to request a copy of it.
A Very French Affair has everything that I absolutely love in a book. People who have been following my reviews for quite some time know that I love a book about food. And oh boy… this story is set in a little French bakery and the main character has her own cake decorating business. I think you catch my drift, when I say the story is overall mouth-watering.
I think Sue Roberts is quickly gaining a place in my favourite feel good authors list because she writes mature chick lit, if that is even a thing. In this book we follow Liv, who is mother to an 18 year old son. I absolutely love reading about woman who have lived a little and who are struggling with choices they have made in the past.
Liv her past is coming to hunt her when her son finally asks about his father. Liv once fell head over heels in love with a young men in the south of France. A summer love that mend the world to her… and now she has to find that men to give her son a chance to meet his father.
Finding Jake’s father is absolutely the core point of the story. But apart from that there are multiple side storylines worth reading. I loved how important family was in this story. It was just such a warm and heartfelt overall story.
Without a doubt the ideal book to read while you are enjoying a cool glass of rose while gazing over the Mediterranean sea. Or biting in a croissant. Because this book will leave you hungry! Be warned!

Olivia is a single mother with a popular cake - baking and decorating business. However, her past comes to hunt her again when Jack finally asks about his father that he has never seen. Liv decides to track André down, even though she really doesn't have much to go on - she fell head over heels in love with a young, handsome boy in the south of France but it turned out to be only a summer romance and she was forced to raise her son on her own. However, she's now desperate to give Jack the father he so deserves.

The highlight of this novel are for sure the gorgeous, delicious descriptions of the French food, as well as the setting of the French Riviera, and in these moments the author had me hooked, transporting me to France and letting my mouth water.

The characters were nice but simply not well - rounded enough for me and very stereotyped and I just couldn't warm to them and their stories. There was nothing wrong with them, please do not get me wrong on this one, but they were just not my type of characters, or rather it was the way they were written, and all the right things happening so accidentally and conveniently to them that, in my eyes, made them not so relatable and this bit unbelievable.

The writing style is nice and very easy to follow, the sentences are short and they follow the same pattern of describing situations: she woke up, washed, dressed and ate breakfast. I would love it to be more descriptive, more eloquent. The situations happened one after another, the twists were predictable and immediately resolved, I missed some tension, some build - up to things and events.

Altogether, "A Very French Affair" was a light, easy, heart - warming story about friendship and second chances and how life may surprise you in the most unexpected moments, a great summer read, and even better to enjoy with a croissant. Or two.

This has the honour of being my very first NetGalley read and 'A Very French Affair' by Sue Roberts came at the perfect time to be enjoyed on the sun lounger in the garden!

The setting was beautiful, the characters were charming and the plot was a little predictable but I can thoroughly recommend 'A Very French Affair' as a perfect beach read this summer.

Set on the gorgeous Cote d'Azur, this tale of long-lost love and reunions was at times a little saccharine sweet but it was easily forgivable. The writing could have benefited from a wider vocabulary and I can't count on one hand the number of times that the protagonist put on some 'silver jewellery to complement the dress' which was a little clunky but there you go!

However the relationships in the novel were entirely believable and definitely the best part of the novel; the range of characters, their interactions and altercations had me laughing out loud.

I'll definitely read some more of Sue Roberts in the future - there's nothing better than chick lit in the summer!

I thoroughly enjoyed this story!

It is a love affair that has a lovely ending and I really enjoyed the book for that.

This is a heart-warming story, relaxed and well written. It would be the perfect story to read on a summers day or on a holiday where you can just relax and let the author's words take you away.

The author has a lovely writing style and brought everything to life for me, the characters, the setting and the story! It is 5 stars from me for this one, very highly recommended!!

I think I was the wrong audience for this book. It’s a sweet, slow, very detail-oriented accounting of the main character, Liv’s, journey to France to find her son’s father after twenty years. To me, it read like a journal and the slower pace felt a bit tedious, but that’s on me, not the author! I did enjoy Liv’s friendship with Faye and Jo, and her relationship with her son, Jake, was heartfelt and realistic. If you enjoy a pleasant, easy read and a taste of England and France, it’s worth a try!

A Very French Affair is about Liv going to back to the south of France to help out her aunt Gen and to see if she can find the father of her son. Overall this was a fresh story, that really made me want to go hang out in the south of France, I did not connect to the main character's as much as I like to but I did enjoy the story.

To powieść pachnąca świeżo upieczonym chlebem i słodkim winem rozlanym do kieliszków.

Time for summer lovin’! Cake baker Liv returns to France to search for the father of her son, conceived during a summer of passion 20 years ago.
Andre left to go travelling and Liv never saw him again but discovered she was pregnant and couldn’t find him to let him know he has a son. Now Jake wants to find his father so Liv begins to search…
A Very French Affair will leave a warm feeling in your heart as Liv rediscovers lost love and tries to build a new relationship with her former love. The complication of a secret child tugs at the emotions and adds an extra dimension to the plot.
Sue Roberts’ descriptions are rich and evocative so it is very easy to imagine the French setting. The theme of lost love is beautifully written and you keep your fingers crossed that Liv will get a happy ending.
It was nice to read a book about a character my own age who has a second chance at happiness and is a strong character but is still vulnerable, nursing a broken heart and wasted dreams. There is hope and the opportunity for a fresh start for all of the characters.
Overall, this was an uplifting book and a great way to kick off a summer reading list!

Olivia (Liv) has managed to spend the last twenty years starting her own cake decorating business after leaving teaching, and raising her son Jake who constantly reminds her of the summer love she had in France when she was just 18. Now, with her parents having taken up roving the countryside in a camper-van, and her son returning from Uni with several questions about continuing, she’s convinced that things are all crashing around her, and the plans she had for an orderly and successful future are up in the air. But with her Aunt Genevieve’s needing knee surgery and some care for a few weeks after, as well as a helping hand in her own bakery where Liv learned to love cakes, pastries and pies, she’s decided to head to France to help out, taking one of her best friends with her, and leaving her home business in the capable hands of her assistant, with her son helping out as needed.

Of course, because things couldn’t be more complicated for Liv, Jake has expressed what is, to her, the first interest in his father in years. She’s feeling guilty for not connecting the two, even though she didn’t have the first idea where to find André, and she’s not happy that she and Jake have had words. She’s also concerned about his indecision about continuing on with his university course, and while she’s impressed with what he has been knocking up in the kitchen, she can’t help but wonder about the sudden change in his direction, or just what is best for him.

From worrying about how to contact André, to actually having to do it, discovering her feelings are still strong, and the memories stirred up by working with her aunt, her aunt’s best friend Lillian and her outrageous (yet very French attitudes) and her discovering the beauty and allure of the countryside – Liv has so much to deal with, and mostly she handles it well. But, explaining Jake’s existence to André and worrying about both reactions: discovering a son and introducing a father, she’s still wondering about her life back in England, and if she can figure out a way to not lose André again, after rediscovering him and her feelings for him. A lovely and sunny story, redolent with the sights, smells and atmosphere of the Cote d’Azur, and full of those moments of family and friends (particularly Jo and her doggie-nemesis Harold) that add richness and texture to a story to make it feel more ‘real’ and grounded.

I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

I was really happy when I got a digital copy of this book through NetGalley since it sounded like the perfect summer read, and as usual I am happy to leave a review. I never realized that I had a preference in book styles, but apparently I do, because I really don't like the 1st person account, it somehow just seems to throw me off, but besides that I did not like the book as much as I thought I would. It was just too predictable and a bit slow moving, and I never lost myself in the storyline, there wasn't enough chemistry between the two main characters, instead of keeping me up and reading past my bedtime it rather put me to sleep. Overall it was a nice read, no lured sex scenes, it won't make my list of books I love to read over and over again, but it did make me hungry for sweets thought, especially a Bee Hive since that is my favorite too.

This is the story of Olivia—a single mother with a cake business. When her son Jake finally asks (he is 20 years old) about his father that he has never known. Olivia decides to track André down, even though she really doesn't have much to go on. Whilst on this journey, she remembers the summer she fell head over heels in love with a young, handsome boy in the south of France, Andre. However, at the end of their summer together, Andre left to travel the world, and Olivia was left heartbroken after returning home and never hearing from him again. Especially once she realizes she is pregnant with his child. Now 20 years later, Olivia is desperate and nervous to give Jack the father he deserved.

First let me say that the descriptions of the French food, as well as the setting of the French Riviera were fantastic in this book. These moments had me hooked and transported me to back to France.

The characters were okay, but nothing to brag about. They weren’t developed enough for me and very one dimensional. The way they were written was very bland to me. It also seemed that all the right things happened so conveniently to them that it was a bit unbelievable.

The writing style is nice otherwise. It was very easy to follow. I did feel however that there seemed to be a lack of adjectives at times when the author was describing aolivias day to day comings and goings. I would love it to be more descriptive in that sense. But otherwise the writing was simple and made for a quick read.

The situations in the plot seemed, like I said, convenient. I felt the twists were predictable and also resolved almost immediately,

Altogether, "A Very French Affair" was a light, easy read about friendship and second chances. About how life isn’t perfect and may surprise you in unexpected ways. This is a decent summer read if you like lighthearted/non-deep storylines and characters.

Content:
Language: Hardly- almost none

This review was originally posted on Star Crossed Reviews I received this book for free from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Thank you to Bookouture for letting me take part in this tour and for my copy of this book via Netgalley. I have a few books by this author on my TBR pile but this is the first book I have managed to read.

First things first do not read this on an empty stomach. Sue does such a good job of describing the food in this book that your mouth will literally be watering. I am craving all sorts of food right now.

Liv is struggling as her 20-year-old son has started asking questions about his father. Live has always been honest about Jake's father but now she's not sure if she did enough to try to trace him. Liv is easy to like, she has some really great friends too. At some points, Liv is very mum like and worries quite a lot which I dd find slightly annoying but that could be me reverting back to my childhood.

I loved the relationships in this book. Liv and her son are very close as are Liv and her parents. It is lovely to see this. I also loved Liv's friends Faye and Jo. Jo has the best stories, I couldn't help but laugh at these.

This book has little drama, lots of laughs and romantic locations. The setting of this book was beautiful and I would love to go to the south of France. It sounds amazing. I can't wait to dive into Sue's other books and see where she takes me next.

🌞Sun-kissed and with minor angst, A Very French Affair is the dream romance of second chances set in a gorgeous Antibes summer. English entrepreneur baker Olivia takes off for the South of France and a trunkful of memories knowing that she owes it to her 20 year-old son to search for his father Andre, who left her to go on a world tour before Olivia even knew she was pregnant. Though she actually spends most of her time helping out in her aunt's bakery and enjoying Antibes at its summer best, fate steps in and aids in her hunt for Andre.

💜The story is a romantic and happy one, but not unrealistically so. Flashbacks to 1998, the year Olivia met and lost Andre, are few but they set the tone for Olivia's present day ambivalence and procrastination. If she succeeds and finds Andre, could it warp her memories of the youthful connection they shared? It's no wonder she is hesitant about getting her hopes up. This is a heroine that I could easily identify with (though I, unlike Olivia, am no genius in the kitchen!)

The secondary characters are well-drawn, right down to the local market fruit vendor Olivia befriends, and all of the mouth-watering descriptions of food were so vivid I put on a pound or two just from reading about it!😋,

Overall, a lovely read and a paean to the French cuisine, scenery and lifestyle.

I read a complimentary advance copy of the book provided through NetGalley; this is my voluntary and honest review.

This is such a lovely story of a long-lost love, family secrets and second chances. The setting is superb as who doesn't want to read about France's Cote d'Azur? When you add a bakery and a handsome Frenchman then it's pretty much perfect. I loved Liv's aunt and her wacky friend who add a touch of colour to the book but it is the relationships that develop in the search for Liv's first love and how this will affect her son, Jake. Lovely book to curl up with in the garden or on the beach but make sure you have plenty of time as this is a book you'll want to read in one go.

Review
A very French affair by Sue Roberts is indeed a free spirited and relaxing novel perfect for summer reads. South France is all about delicious food, hotels, cakes, beaches and monuments, the author has exquisitely fitting it all into this single book. The French breeze that has been gliding throughout the book will make anybody fall in love with France. There is a lot of delectable cakes and appetizing food which will tempt the readers to crave for them. The writing style was simple and lucid, the French touch in the conversation between the characters were impressive.

The storyline was super tantalizing, I immediately got attracted towards the book right after reading the first few chapters. The characterization of the protagonist Liv is depicted in an adorable manner. The supporting characters were side-splitting, the French classes by Madame Beaumont and dog stories by Jo are few notable examples for that. The relationship between Olivia and her son was portrayed alluringly, in fact every single relationship in this book has been captured in an enchanting way. The emotional roller coaster that Liv, André and Jake undergoes were written realistically and was really easy to gulp up their uncertainty. The plot was simple, happy and well developed. A feel good novel for the perfect season.

My view
Oh my god!!!! This book increased my appetite, I craved for all those sponge cakes and of course St Clement cupcakes and raspberry buns. I was happy to find the recipes of those two at the end of the book, Thank you Sue Roberts for that. I’m definitely going to ask someone to make that for me. And the fishes from Langousta were described in a mouth watering manner. It was big food treat. I have fallen in love with Antibes, I'm going there one day without doubt and will visit Musée Picasso, Marineland and all the other places noted in this book. I was so much drawn to the story-line, it was amazing. The cover more or less exposed what to expect from the book and I din't end up disappointed. I really loved this book. I would recommend this book to all the humor lovers, foodies, travelers, chic lit lovers, in simple words I would recommend this to everybody who is looking for a heartwarming and feel good book. Do read it and let me know how do you feel about this book on the comment section below.

WARNING : While reading this book surround yourself with lots of food and cakes because you will get extremely tempted to eat those. At least these supplies would satiate your hunger filled food lust.

A Very French Affair so good and sweet that is very hard to leave behind like any other holiday romance at the end of the vacation.
My rating for this book is 4.2 / 5

Happy reading folks!!!
