Caribbean Competitors

Rate this book
Xiamara Nivar and Apollo Fischer had the perfect childhood friendship, leading her to believe they’d transition to soulmate-status seamlessly.

She couldn’t have been more wrong.

When it came to a more-than-friends relationship, they were super cringe. No wonder Xia didn’t believe him when he promised to come back for her the night before he left for college. But still, she waited.

After seven years of foolishly hoping he’d keep his word, Xia has put all that behind her. She’s got a career, a cast of colorful comrades, and a competitive streak bigger than the Caribbean Ocean. Winning this year's Moss Monster Meet will be a cinch—until Apollo returns to the small island of Simona.

Not only is she a stumbling, stuttering, shipwreck of a human whenever he’s present, but the unthinkable has happened. Apollo plans to compete in the race, threatening the three-year winning streak that will earn her the coveted title of Moss Boss.

When they are thrust together, Xia can’t maintain her composure—and Apollo knows it. He isn’t above using it against her, either.

With the finish line in sight, Xia has one burning question: is it the race Apollo wants to win, or her heart?

I loved the first book in the Simona Island series and was excited to get an ARC of book two! Xia and Apollo were best friends growing up and she always held that silent hope in her heart they would become something *more.* 💕💕 When that didn’t happen and Apollo left the island, she did her best to move on. I loved Xia’s character right away. She was fun, upbeat, and I loved the way the writing immediately immersed me in island life.

The big event in this book is the Moss Monster Meet, a race with different island specific tasks to perform at various stages of the race. It reminded me a little of The Amazing Race, which is one of my favorite shows, so I was totally on board! This year, there’s been a rule change and rather than running the race alone, everyone must choose a partner. I loved watching the chemistry as Xia and Apollo find their way back to each other… and there were even some surprises I wasn’t expecting! This is a delightful contemporary romance that I highly enjoyed. 5/5 stars.

“I’ve always got you.”

Caribbean Competitors was steamy, smile inducing and so much fun!  This book is at the very top of my favorite contemporaries this year, sitting right in-between The Hating Game and The Love Hypothesis!  This book was pure gold and had it all!  Spicy romance?  Check!  Laugh out loud moments?  Check!  Characters that will become a part of your soul?  Do I even need to say check?!  This truly had it all.  If you want a book that is impossible to put down and will feel as though one of your favorite movies or shows is playing out in the pages of a book, then you need this story in your life!  This is one I'll definitely be re-reading again and again!
I exhale and shake my head. Moss Monster Meet. Training. Work. This is my life.

I truly don't know who I loved more, Xiamara or Apollo.  Xiamara lived on Simona Island where she had family, friends and a job she loved.  Apollo's family and friends were there too, but he had been in New York for the last 7 years.  They were bestest of friends in their younger years, but when they tried to move their friendship to more, it didn't work.  Apollo promised to come back to Xiamara when he left, but never did.  So when Xiamara saw Apollo back on the island, and joining in the Moss Monster Meet that was her blood, sweat and tears, oh my heart I felt for her.  But fate has a funny way of working out, and Xiamara and Apollo's paths were filled with lots of fun and heat!
He dips his head until his lips brush my ear. “You’ve changed.” His statement is a rugged rasp that’s deep enough to penetrate my spine and send a purr through each cell of my body.

Xiamara, aka Xia, was hilarious and someone that you could easily see yourself being best friends with.  Her thoughts were so much fun, her feelings become my own and I loved how she could be a tiny bit dramatic at times.  Hiding out and sneaking around, just try and not smile lol.  I also loved how passionate she was with her job, and it was so easy to fall in love with the gorgeous small community she lived in.  Yet that community provided no privacy.  And Xia was a little nervous about what other people thought with Apollo being back.  They all knew their history.  So when rules chandged and it pushed Xia and Apollo back together, I was so giddy and excited.  The chemistry and tension between them was delicious and I couldn't get enough of it!
“Where do you go, Xia?” His lips twist, boyishness gone, curious adult gaze in full scrutiny. “When you look at me like that?”
Biting my lip, I pull the rings from my fingers. “Nowhere.”

I wanted to be unsure of Apollo, but that was beyond impossible.  He had so much charisma, that he easily swept me under his spell.    He was charming, seductive, thoughtful, funny and seemed definitely interested in Xia.  His little comments like it's a date, for meeting up to train for the Moss Monster Meet had me squealing in excitement!  I loved how he played her little games and how they both messed with the other.  But most of all I loved how Apollo made Xia nervous.  Xia was always so put together and Apollo emotionally and physically made her stumble.  His presence alone impacted her time and again.  As the story unfolded, he showed us his protective side, and there was no way to not be obsessed with Apollo!
One of his last posts is a picture out the airplane window with the caption, “I’ll miss you, New York, but I miss her so much more.”
My heart thrums a wicked beat as I stare at his words. Who is this her? A tiny, hopeful voice says, “Could be you,” but I smash that hope to dust because the notion is ludicrous.

As Xia and Apollo continued to train, there was so much sexual tension.  And even when Apollo seemed to be giving Xia all the signs he was interested, she didn't grasp it.  He was leaving in a bit, right?  She didn't want to get attached and hurt.  Again.  So we listened as Xia tried to lie to herself she didn't want Apollo.  But it was impossible since so many of their moments together felt like more. Laced with longing and scorching hot looks or touches, Xia and Apollo were explosive together.  Their dancing scene, oh my gosh *fans face*.  And when they did cross the line to more, it was erotic, intoxicating and sensual.  Yet mistakes were made, by both of them.  And there was healing that needed to be done too.
There’s no future for us, so why is he torturing me with touches that no one else has ever come close to replicating?

I was beyond excited to see characters from the previous book, Holiday Hotel, but you don't have to read that one first. Although I can't recommend it enough!  Caribbean Competitors can easily be read as a standalone! Between the training for the upcoming event, the side characters that are heartwarming, and the main characters, I couldn't stop smiling! With setups, secrets and emotions on the line, this book was so entertaining! Truths came out and I loved how the story unfolded! If you're a fan of adult romance that is steamy and heartfelt, you definitely need this book on your tbr!
Apollo Fischer kisses me down to my soul.

PS I loved the chapter titles and serenity now reference lol!
He cups my face, studying me. I may just die of warm, gooey overload right here, right now.
He stays still as if asking a thousand questions I don’t have answers to, and my heart pangs, my eyes burn, and I spiral into a serious emotional overload.
“Don’t stop kissing me.” My voice is a thready, weak wisp.

PPS I can't wait for the next book about Roxanne and Ziggy *fingers crossed*!

Caribbean Competitors: Xiamara is content with her life on Simona Island. She absolutely loves her job, where she is paid for her passion to do all things aromatherapy. She has great friends! And this year she is going to win the annual island Mossy Monster Meet and take home the title of Moss Boss. She has trained hard and she is ready. Until Apollo returns to the island. The boy she’s loved all her life. He’s been haunting her since he left seven years ago. And now she’s expected to partner with him in the competition, which is a real problem since she is struggling to speak/stay upright in his presence.

What a funny book! Xiamara was so hilarious, right from the jump. I loved spending time in her head. I keep thinking about her army crawling backward out of a room to avoid someone. She is bonkers and I love it. And her chemistry with Apollo is incredible. There is some mild spiciness present, but even without that you can just feel how into each other they are. Very hot. Very sweet.

The whole Mossy Meet is really funny. In one of the events, the contestants have to rescue lost tourists from the jungle. I know training montages might not be the most fun to read about, but I actually loved them in this book. More time to spend with Xia and Apollo, and more time to read about these silly challenges.

Xiamara is an aromachologist and I loved reading about all the scent mixes she makes and what the scents do. It was such a nice, immersive touch.

Caribbean Competitors is the second book in the Simona Island series and I really need to go back and read book one. I’m excited to learn more about the island and the community. Fingers crossed it is as hilarious as book two!

Xia and Apollo were best friends as children and then had a disastrous first kiss. Time has passed with Apollo away but but emotions run high when he returns to the island. This book had it all… comedy, emotion, steamy romance, escapism at it's finest. I will be looking for the first book in the series and anything else by this author, I'm hooked! Caribbean Competitors by Poppy Minnix is the second book of the Simona Island series. Although I have read the first book Holiday Hotel, this can be read as a standalone. I do recommend reading the first book though as a lot of the characters make a reappearance in this one. I can't get over how much this series and the people of Simona Island have won my heart over.

Xiamara Nivar reunites with her childhood best friend, Apollo Fischer. The character development and growth between these two is huge. From the first page until the last you are finding out more about them, their history, and the emotions they feel. Xia struggles with balancing the past, present and thoughts of the future all while trying to win the traditional island competition, The Moss Monster Meet. Simona Island throws a lot of curveballs her way that might just impact her chance of winning the coveted Moss Boss title.

The story is told from a single point of view, Xiamara. I often like alternating/dual point of view with both the FMC and MMC, however with Poppy's writing of Apollo into the book I didn't feel that I was missing out on the dual perspectives. Through Xia (and other island residents) we absorb everything about Apollo. Often I wanted to yell at her, "Oh come on girl!!! It's so obvious!" and it just kept me reading. It was easy to fall in love with Apollo and become Xia's best friend.

Caribbean Competitors includes love, desire, adventure, and so much more! I don't want to spoil it all. I would consider this story to fall in the lines of Second Chances, Friends to Lovers, and a kind of version of Forced Proximity.

I do wish that there was just a little more at the end of the story but I am always the reader who wants more and more! It seemed to end quickly. The epilogue gives us a brief look into the next book of the series as well as a little more closure of Xiamara and Apollo's story.

This is absolutely a 5 star read from me! Spice level 3/5.

A big thank you to Poppy and City Owl Press for providing me with a free copy of Caribbean Competitors in exchange for a fair and honest review. I can not wait until the third book comes out!

...Also, can we just make this Island real and move there?

Book Review: Caribbean Competitors (Simona Island #2)

Title: Caribbean Competitors
Author: Poppy Minnix
Pub. Date: November 22, 2022
Pages: 272
Pub: City Owl Press
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Rating: 5

This will be a spoiler free review. Thank you so much to Poppy and City Owl Press for the advanced copy! I really enjoyed this second installment in the Simona Island series. I loved book one, and this one was just as fun to read and as easy to get lost in.

I know, I know – I’m very behind on reading it, and I’m kicking myself, because I thoroughly enjoyed this book. But in my defense I spent all of November sick as shit with no energy, and then it was the rest of the holidays, and I’m sure I’m not alone in dealing with a bunch of stupid bullshit at work that just eats at your soul.

But I’ve been reading a lot of high fantasy and just heavier books in general and remembered that I had Caribbean Competitors still sitting half read on my kindle, so I decided to dive in.
I’m kicking myself for having procrastinated for so long because this was fun. The bumbling and fumbling Xia and Apollo shared – the teasing and sexual tension. The denial on Xia’s part to protect her heart all while practically eye fucking him at every opportunity and getting jealous and possessive when other women fawned over him.

Okay, maybe jealous and possessive are red flags, but it’s fiction and you know what, it was hot. And the way Apollo teased…oh damn. I get why Xia was a fumbling mess around him, because that man is very obviously walking sex incarnate. And kudos to Poppy for making that so very obvious that it just rolled off the page.

But even with all that, he was still kind of that kid who left seven years ago – they both were, and it was damn endearing. Like, how despite Xia’s reservations in protecting her heart, she couldn’t help but fall back into the easy camaraderie they had and those moments were so fun.

I loved the two of them together – their ups and downs and miscommunications and obvious desire for each other. It made it so much fun to read and get lost in.

This is technically book two in the series, but I feel like you can start here and be fine! That's not to say that you shouldn't go back and read the first one (because it is amazing), but you will want more of the island, the characters and the feeling the stories bring. This is a must read and a must read now!

The author grabs the reader's attention right from the start and never lets it go! The reader can't find a place to stop reading this one, and they have to make the decision between reading or adulting (and reading won in my case). The story flows smoothly, the characters are fun and the reader wants to become friends with them in real life. The location makes the reader forget that they are sitting in a dark and dreary place and they feel like they are a part of the island life.

Do yourself a favor and add this one and the previous one to your TBR list and move it to the top! These are a must read and a must read now! I love this series and am sad that I have to wait another year for the next one!

I read this book without reading the first one in the series first but the story is not hard to follow and figure out who is who (though I found the urge to read it the first book of the series now!) . I'm in love with Simona Islands, the quirky characters of the residents are so unique but somehow real, as if I'm in there, enjoying the islands both for the entertainment and exploring around.

The idea of estranged childhood best friend reunited again when they're adult with some unresolved things and untold feeling never failed to sold me out. The author did a great job on entwined Xia and Apollo back together through their preparation for the island annual competition, their banter is so cute. This book follow Xia's point of view of everything happened, so even if I found that she tends to run away when things get overwhelming I can understand her reason and gosh! isn't Apollo THE book boyfriend we all dreaming to have?!

This has been a funny, sweet, and steamy story. it fits best when you in need some escapism read!

Another super fun one from @poppyminnix!! This time we learn Xiamara and Apollo’s story. They had the perfect childhood friendship, leading Xia to believe they’d transition to soulmate-status seamlessly. She couldn’t have been more wrong. Now she’s set on winning this year’s Moss Monster Meet - until Apollo returns to the small island of Simona.

I’ll ask it again! Why can’t Simona be a real place?? I would book a one way ticket ASAP!! Minnix does such a great job of creating the community of the island and making you crave to be a part of it. The people sound so welcoming and supportive. Xia has such a fun friend group. I would love to hang out with them and go dancing! I also loved that the Epilogue definitely hinted at another Simona Island book and I can’t wait!

This book was a cute romance that I highly enjoyed reading. Reading this novel felt comforting as it created a wonderful scene depiction of a close knit family community supporting each other and cheering on the Love interests. The amount of times I laughed out loud at some of the crazy scenes Poppy Minnix has created in this novel make it well worth the read. Add in meddling mothers, a Caribbean island, a unique race and competition, and a sweet romance for the ages and you have a wonderful read.

5 Stars! I will visit Simona Island every year by re-reading this series!!!

Just enough heat without burning your toes in the sand!
Poppy Minnix has created a world where you can immerse yourself in the sunshine and escape for awhile!
Lighthearted and fun. I read Holiday Hotel just a little bit before this released and I’m so very happy I did! Her books do short little lead ins to the next but you don’t HAVE to read in order but trust me you will want to!
The characters are well written and relatable! I will be preordering her next and next and next after that!

** Thank you to Netgalley for this ARC**

I really did enjoyed reading this book very much! The plot, how it was written, and also the characters. This was my first time reading from the author Poppy Minnix and I'm glad that I did because like I said before I did enjoy how this book was written. So, this book is about former childhood friends -- Xiamara and Apollo-- who lost contact with each other over the years cross paths again as adults as Xiamara was training for some type of race that the island they live on hosts each year. Both Apollo and Xiamara had a crush on each other but they didn't want their friendship to be ruined, so they continued to be in the friendzone. But now as adults, both Apollo and Xiamara still has feelings for each other especially while they're both training for the race together and also being partnered as well. This book did made me go through alot of feelings of happy, giggly, and sometimes pissed off during reading each chapter and I'm glad this book did kept me entertained. And, most importantly for me, it ended with an HEA and epilogue to the next book in the series. Do I recommend this book? Yes, I do if you love or enjoy reading the 'childhood friends to lovers' trope in romances. I give this book a 5/5 stars and 5/5 for the steamy scenes *wink wink*.

Just like Holiday Hotel before it, Caribbean Competitors is a fun, sweet, funny romance. The way Xiamara turns into a hot mess any time Apollo gets near is a hilarious contrast to the rest of her life, which she's managed to corral into tidy order. Maybe things aren't as tidy as she thought...
In addition to the funnsies and the kissies, there were a couple complex and emotional parts that really connected with me, but unfortunately they're spoilers, so you'll have to read it for yourself.
Which you should do right now!

The second book in the Simona Island series, this is a new Author to me once I read this ARC I bought the first book in the series. Xiamara Nivar has waited seven years for Apollo Fischer to keep his promise, but decides it is time to let him go, then he comes back. They will go a lot of ups and downs on their way to a happy ending and competing in the Moss Monster Meet. I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This was such a cute read! I loved the push and pull between the characters. The attraction and the competitiveness. Xiamara was such a relatable character. The author did a fantastic job of world building. I could picture this tropical oasis and it allowed me to escape into the book and away from reality for a bit. Who doesn’t live that?

If you’re looking for a super cute romance, I highly recommend this book! Grab the first book while you’re at it. This can be read as a stand-alone but just do yourself a favor and get the first one too! I give this 5 stars.

I recommend this book to those that want to be transported to a relaxing tropical island. The way the author describes the setting makes you want to take a vacation. The author did a great job describing how the main character, Xia, is connected to the island emotionally. Xia grew up in Simona Island and fell for her best friend Apollo since they were young. Due to certain circumstances, they reconnected many years later as adults. In this book we only read Xia’s POV which allows us to get to know her better. She seems like a person I would be friends with. She loves her job and helping others, which involves a type of aromatherapy. I enjoyed reading the parts where she discusses how she creates an aroma and how she personalizes it.

One of Xia’s goals is to win a competition that takes place at the island, which she trains a lot for. She is described as normally put together and disciplined, but once Apollo returns unexpectedly she becomes clumsy and self-conscious. I didn’t mind that she was described this way, but there were moments I wanted her to be more confident. I didn’t understand how she hung out with Apollo normally as if he didn’t leave for 7 years. That is my main criticism of the book. I felt confused, as if a part of the book was missing. In the first half of the book, Apollo’s reason for disappearing is not completely addressed, despite them being best friends when younger. I kept waiting for a complete explanation, which makes more sense towards the end. It could be that I am impatient. There were also other things not fully addressed, such as Xia’s health issues when younger and the relationship with her family. Other than that, I liked this book a lot. I loved when Xia and Apollo spent time together and the spicy scenes were written beautifully. Reading about the competition and how it affected the development of their relationship was fun. Their connection is much stronger in the end and there were many cute moments. Even though I didn’t know how to feel about Apollo in the beginning, I ended up loving him. I definitely would like to read more about this couple and revisit Simona Island.

The story
Xiomara works in the resort spa on Simona Island in the Caribbean. Her world is filled with scents that she plans and dreams and mixes. While her heart belongs to her childhood best friend Apollo, now a pilot living in New York, her dream is to win the Moss Monster Meet, the intense physical challenge open to locals only. When Apollo arrives back on the island for an extended stay, and he and Xio are paired up as race partners, all Xio’s secret feelings are put under pressure.

My thoughts
Despite this being book two in the Simona Island series, this story works fine as a standalone read. Both share a strong vibe and personality of the main character- Cozette in book one and Xiomara in this instalment, enhanced by a single, first person POV. Xiomara is a complex character. Her head and heart are a place with rich emotions but her life path has made her wary of sharing her thoughts and feelings. A tiny bit of me was hoping she would feel comfortable sharing some of her backstory, but true to character, she hides this from the reader too. The epilogue hints at a book three, I can’t wait to read it! 🛶

Thank you to NetGalley and Victory Editing for a copy of Caribbean Competitiors in exchange for an honest review.

I finally finished this book!! It took me so much longer than I had expected it to because I had to keep walking away since Xia kept infuriating me!

Overall, I did enjoy this story, but I found Xia to be completely insufferable at times. She was so clueless and came up with the most ridiculous reasons as to why Apollo couldn't possibly like her and then blamed him for every misunderstanding between them (like how you gonna get mad about his leaving the island, when you never once asked him if that's even what he's planning to do?!). Don't get me wrong, there were some sweet moments, but they were drowning in misunderstandings and miscommunications. Then when they finally get together after having an actual adult discussion, the story's just over? Just felt so anticlimactic to me... Like I said, I did enjoy this for the most part, but it definitely was not a favorite romance for me.

I liked this more than the first book in the series (even though the first one was very good). Xia and Apollo have a long history together so the tension is off the charts. It is such a slow burn but totally worth it. I really liked the storyline, both people have left the island at some point, but promises were made and now there is distance both emotionally and physically. Xia is a funny and confident person, but her clumsiness was too much at times. It was a little unbelievable. I also felt like there were a lot of unanswered questions. Why did it take Apollo three extra years? What do his tattoos mean (the X in the hexagon)? I almost actually wish there was a chapter or two from his point of view. It was nice to be back on the island and see characters both old and new. Overall this is a really great series with a fantastic setting and characters. This book can be read as a standalone. Caribbean Competitors written by Poppy Minnix is a contemporary romance novel that is part of the Simona Island series.

Xiamara Nivar and Apollo Fischer were childhood best friends. Naturally, she thought that Apollo and her were soulmates, unfortunately, Apollo leaves but promises to come back. Forward a few years later, Xia no longer holds onto the hope that he would return.

Xia's focus now is on the upcoming Moss Monster Meet but Apollo shows up and she's frazzled. The chemistry between the two is undeniable and I love that everyone in the community are rooting for the two to get together.

Do I recommend it? Yes, I do! It has romance and humour. Even though it is the second book to the Simona Island series, I was not lost at all. Enjoyed the meddling and curious community of those in Simona Island.

I love the Simona Island series!! I always feel like I'm right there. I loved being able to read more about the island as Xia and Apollo trained for the island's Moss Monster competition. This is a second chance romance. Apollo left Simona Island for 7 years and left Xia behind. Although Xia loves living there, she does not love the island gossip and is very concerned about being the topic of conversation when Apollo comes back. However they are forced to work together for the competition. I enjoyed the back and forth between them and was waiting for them to finally act on their feelings!

This was a really fun read and I enjoyed the return to Simona Island. I definitely am looking forward to reading the other books in this series. I did feel like the spicy scenes was way too long and it took me forever to skip through it on my Kindle. Overall though, it was a fun story, and I enjoyed the twists throughout. I do wish I had more of Xia and Apollo's backstory as they kept referencing moments that I wasn't aware of. I'm not sure if that's because it's been so long since I read the first book or if it was intentionally vague.

Book 2 of Simona Island.
A good read. Likeable story. 4*.

Zia and Apollo made a great couple! Finding that they had a history together made it so much more interesting and fun. Sometimes the second try ends up working and giving the reader a great romance with lots of fun! I Loved It!!! No Spoilers!.

I really enjoyed this book! I find that with some romance books, the plot is flimsy and uninteresting in lieu of supporting the ~tension,~ but here I felt like the plot kept me engaged more than usual. I wish the last 30% had stretched out a little more, but overall, I thought this was a solid book.

This was a wining book for me. I found me a new author to want to read more books from. With this book, I had to go and find the first book to read this. I loved it all. Plus you get island adventure going on.

I received an advance review copy for free from BookSirens, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This book was pretty good. I actually didn't read the first book in the series but to be honest, I don't think it's necessary. Each book is about different characters and there isn't anything important to read in the first book to understand in the second.

I feel like there could've been some improvements though. There were many scenes where they would start in one place and then end in another but it never said anything about the characters moving so that was just confusing. There were a lot of parts like that.

I didn't like a few other things, but overall, this was a pretty good book.

This was a good read. I enjoyed this book even though I didn’t read the first book in the series. It works well as a standalone. I look forward to reading more in the series.

Side note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for a honest review
