The Noom Mindset: Learn the Science, Lose the Weight

Rate this book
Noom's first-ever (and only!) official book!
When it comes to setting and achieving your goals, how you think influences what you do. Whether developing a sustainable relationship with food, jump-starting a new fitness routine to shoot for a certain number on the scale, or tackling a health issue, mindset is key to meeting your goals—but it can also often be the most neglected element in any attempt to change behavior. While you might know what you want to do, the key to success is understanding why you want to do it, and how you make a plan that works for you in the long term.

The Noom Mindset, created by the leading digital health company that has helped millions achieve their weight and health goals, deconstructs habits around the core drivers of body weight: what we eat and how much we move. You'll discover how your habits around eating and weight management are impacted by your own self-confidence, stress, habits, lifestyle choices, and the rollercoaster of motivation (yes, it's supposed to go up and down). Best of all, you'll learn skills that can be applied to any behavior you want to change, habit you want to break, or life you want to create.

Read by Tanis Parenteau, with an introduction read by Saeju Jeong, this audiobook is an instruction manual for achieving sustainable lifestyle changes plus many other health-related outcomes, including weight loss. With The Noom Mindset, you'll learn how to:
-Cultivate a growth mindset
-Master the forging or deconstructing of behavior chains
-Overcome thought distortions
-Generate meaningful internal motivation for staying focused on your goals
-Create changes that stick

Based on more than a decade of research and experimentation, Noom has helped millions of users succeed by employing the mindset tactics that this book teaches. Written with an emphasis on self-awareness, goal-setting, and self-experimentation, The Noom Mindset provides powerful tools to help you reach your goals, your way.

This book has some serious issues. If you e read any psychology or diet stuff before, there won't be all that much new in here. The writing is infantalizing, including one part where it says you might weigh more because it's (in quotes) "that time of the month." Was this written by 5th grade boys?? Also, the editing is sloppy. My favorite sentence was "A grape weighs more than a grape." All that said, there were some.interesting things to think about and I did learn something. It was just painful finding the nuggets in the drivel.

I was hoping Noom would be more than it was. Like a more progressive slimming world. But it's not actually that much different.

They have the "there are no bad foods" tidbits to impress the body positive crowd, but then go on to say to manage your salt intake as apparently, consuming too much salt will make you hold 5 pounds of water weight (if true - so what?). They say fat isn't bad and not a "bad food" but then recommend that when you buy yoghurt you buy fat free yoghurt.

They don't seem to understand themselves the science of hormonal reactions to different foods and intermittent fasting, fat, microbiome, salt intake or anything else any better than my aunty who has been doing the same slimming world diet since god knows when.

They'll say it's fine to have a glass of wine providing you account for it in your calories that day, but also say that it isn't necessary to count calories. And really when they say that its fine to enjoy things like wine within a calorie controlled diet they are purely furthering the propaganda of coca cola. Seriously - why is the ice cream every evening a point to address but wine is just a little footnote.

It's apparently not a diet book, it's a mindset book. So let's ignore the very y2k nutrition information and look at the mindset stuff. If you have never ever read a book about mindset, habits, motivation or self discipline and are unfamiliar with the concept of just *not* eating ice cream instead of stuffing yourself with it every evening - then this book is for you. (Yes their recommendation is to just not eat the ice cream or to eat something healthier instead like low fat greek yoghurt, it really is that basic, there I've saved you some time)

If you compare noom to weight watchers or slimming world then yes, it probably is better but there is nothing ground breaking here. Or even really deserving of being published after the 2010 period.

Whether you are familiar with Noom or not, The Noom Mindset is a user-friendly guide to the psychology behind the popular weight-loss app. It is a very easy reading, thorough explanation of the hows and whys of setting and reaching goals, particularly in terms of personal health. Readers will leave the experience with a greater understanding of personal motivation and how to tweak their own environment to better their chances of success, whatever their health goals may be.

I found the book interesting and even though I have a fairly thorough understanding of psychology and behavior change, the information was presented in a way that was not repetitive or boring, at all. For readers that want to go more deeply, the book includes numerous footnotes with reference to the original study publication. For those without a psychological background, the authors have explained concepts in easy to understand language, and give relevant examples often.

Although I received a digital copy, I will likely purchase a hard copy, to use as a reference for my personal health journey. It is that good!

Thank you to Netgalley and S&S/Simon Element for the digital ARC of The Noom Mindset. The opinions in this review are my own.

This book is so much more than it really says it is. If you are looking to achieve any new goal in your life, the thought provoking questions throughout the entire book can really launch new behaviors. One must only ask the questions and try! 5++++

I hate giving books poor reviews, but this one felt like a ton of rambling without giving any new or truly helpful information.

I started using the NOOM app in January of 2022. In 15 months, I've lost 110 pounds and feel better than I've ever felt. I read the book, which just reaffirms what the NOOM app teaches and now have an excellent reference. NOOM isn't for everyone, I know. It deals in a lot of the psychology of why you make the choices you do. I've appreciated the teachings and now am more MINDFUL of every choice I make ..... in foods, exercise, activities, etc. I think first.....Ha! It seems simple, I know. I appreciated everything I learned from the NOOM app and this book.

Nothing really new in this book and pretty much everything goes in this book. There were some good tidbits of information but I didn't feel it gave me much direction.

Thanks for the advanced copy NetGalley!

I've used the Noom app a couple of times, and this book is perfectly in-line with the app. I was a bit surprised that the book covers the creaters of the Noom app, and their why. Kind of felt like two men wanted to start a business, so bam they created a few things and ended up at Noom. It doesn't read as if they wanted to help people, but reads as of they wanted a money making business lol, no shame though.

Many people love Noom, I have a male co-worker that lost 100+ pounds using the app. It wasn't for me, but it works for many. They say no food is off limits, but food is labeled red, yellow, and green. Red food is triggering for me, I wish they would've used a neutral color because we all know red is bad.

I think some people will LOVE this book, especially app users. Would suggest of you're a Noom user!

LOVED this book! The psychology gal in me loves all the science and mindsets behind meals and healthy habits. I’m *actually* adding more to my mental tool box from this read, so 5/5 for me. I plan to read again and take notes as I go so it sets in even better.

This is a useful book that provides a concise overview of the process of changing mindset and habits. There's nothing new or groundbreaking here, but the information is provided in a way that's easy to read and understand. It's the kind of thing that would be good to read as a reminder every year.

Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC I received. This is my honest and voluntary review.

Two stars is probably too generous. The cheeky writing style that the app is known for does not translate well into book format. It tried to cram way too much in (look at all these psych terms we can spit out!) but didn't dig below the surface to actually make it useful. If you want a book in a similar vein but far better, check out How To Lose Weight For The Last Time (also not a perfect book, but FAR better than this junk).

I read this out of curiosity. Didn't love it, didn't hate it. But after a lifetime of reading self-help books, of trying to break bad habits, and of being pummeled with diet culture, this book really had nothing new for me. Lots of psychological terminology and positive affirmations. If you haven't attempted to change your mindset about food or your habits surrounding it (or any habits, really) then it's worth a read. Otherwise, spend your time doing something else rewarding.

This book is bizarre. It begins by telling the reader a little about the history of Noom as a company, making it abundantly clear that neither of the company’s co-founders are actually qualified to found a company that aims to encourage healthy habit development. A lot of the contents of the book feel very cultish, with copious amounts of in-speak introduced the further you get into the book.

The book claims that its purpose is motivation and developing healthy habits but despite its claiming this and despite the fact that it mentions that weight loss is not inherently a healthy goal, the book does still focus on weigh loss as though it is both inherently healthy (it's not) and inherently desirable (it's not).

The book repeatedly references a singular psychologist and not a more qualified medical professional on the topic of weight loss or healthy habits. Frankly the usage of a psychologist in the book itself is concerning because despite the psychologist talking about healthy habits the actual contents of the book itself are more of a step-by-step guide to how to develop an eating disorder.

While most of the book is harmful, the parts that aren't harmful are mostly outdated and relatively inaccurate pop psychology.

Noom claims not to be a diet, and in some ways they're right. Noom is more of an eating disorder (at best) or a cult (at worse). Neither of those are good things nor should they be encouraged.

This is on some level a published version of the Noom app and the coaching you can receive when you become a member. They describe the history of the company and the philosophy behind their weight loss plan.

Noom is psychology based, and encourages you to think about what you are eating and why you are eating it at the time, in the hopes you will be more present in your mealtimes. They also have a list of good, okay and bad foods, so you can choose the better ones on a regular basis. The main point of the Noom app is to get a coach and small group, so you won't get that through this book but you will get a better idea of the psychology of weight loss, and it can be a good pairing with a membership to the app.

I received a review copy and am giving honest feedback.

Seems like everything you learn when using the app. It is a nice refresher if you've used the app before and if not, a great way to the change the way you think about food and how you eat.

Like having all the tools (psychological, educational, nutrition, science) as well as the history of the very popular and successful noom app always at your fingertips.

It's written (especially later chapters) in a very young style so some older readers might find it annoying/incomprehensible but for most this will be a home run. Highly recommended.

I was hoping for more information and less upsell. If you are a current Noom devotee, this is the book for you. It explains the concepts behind the popular mindset. However, if you're looking for general advice without subscribing to Noom, you're at a loss. This book is geared toward supporting its audience, not appealing to a new one.

First I'd like to thank Netgalley and the publisher for the advanced reader's copy of this publication.
I already have the Noom app, and find it to be pretty helpful with diet/self-help/habit forming. Noom is all about a change in mindset rather than an overhaul of your whole diet, that most likely will result in weight loss.
While the book is described to be a more in-depth look than the app, I don't believe it actually is that much more in-depth, but rather more winded and repetitive. It does get into some other subjects like the owners and their why but I don't know that hearing those stories really made me feel anything more or different. Overall I give this book a 3 out of 5. It's helpful but I would skip the book and use the app instead.

Thank you Netgalley for an advanced copy.

This is less about weight and more about mind sets in general and how to re-frame your thinking to achieve goals. Good advice in general but not super focused on food/diet/exercise.

Solid book and very different approach to weight loss-taking a psychological approach instead of forcing a restrictive diet upon you. My main takeaway was to be more mindful: about what you’re eating, when you’re eating, how you’re eating, why you’re eating. And then also realizing your thoughts aren’t you: distance yourself from your thought and look at it objectively to overcome what’s holding you back.
