Backyard Starship #6

Distant Horizon

Rate this book
The Universe is a bloody mess. Time to put on your cleaning gloves.

During a routine arrest, Van discovers a stolen spacecraft, its importance far greater than it first appears. Fast, sleek, and beautiful, the ship is a cultural relic from Linulla’s people, and returning their property will set off a chain of events that reveals a new adversary.

Rising in the ranks, Van’s confrontation with a pirate leader isn’t just a case of theft, but something far more sinister.

And Van’s going to take this case personally.

He and his crew will chase the Salt Thieves and their leader in a game that can only have one winner.

Will Van rise to the challenge? Can Icky control her temper? Will Perry make Icky wear pants?

The answer is more complicated than it seems.

And far more dangerous, for that matter, than anything Van has ever done before. But he’s got a new edge on the Moonsword, a new rank, and a new crew as he takes his Dragon to the stars with one thing in mind...

Justice.

The #1 bestselling science fiction series of the year returns for its sixth entry with Distant Horizons. If you're a fan of classic adventure stories, relatable humor, and a hero that refuses to quit, you'll love the Backyard Starship series.

Pretty sure this is going to be my last book that I read in the series. As much as I like the series, the main character is a flighty idiot. I know it probably is more the author's problem then the character but it comes off as the character.

Not only does the story never really seem to actually do anything or catch anyone except by byproduct. There is so many things left hanging that it might as well be a ball of yarn with 50 threads!

What do I mean? Well, Let's start with the Doctor Lady's accomplice, from the twist drive escape pod. We found that he shows up at a bar every second weekend of the month or something like that. Did Van ever actually go to that bar and catch him. The guy who is literally the evil doctor's right hand man? Nope.

Did he ever question the Master who her mysterious patron was that she was working for? Nope.
Did he ever follow through with the cult and the weird statues, like monitor the place and see who else he worked with? nope.
Did he ever return to the space station that had the identity chips being manufactured there. The call marketing scam place with the sealed area of the space station? The one where he left before the long twist, putting a double agent there to get the codes? Nope!

He has so many freaking leads, he can't keep them all straight and lets them all drop as something new and shiny comes up. Making him seem like a utter freaking moron and incompetent. I know this is more likely the Author has so many series that he forgets what he writes, but from reading the book. It just makes him seem stupid. Hell even in this book he contacts the old master at the start, then later on acts like he never did that and has to contact him again. Can't even remember what he wrote at the start of the book versus the end of it!

So yea, I'd honestly not recommend reading this series if you care about the plot and can keep track of it. Maybe if you read one book a year and will forget all the stuff by the next book. However if you read it all in one go as a series or can just remember basic plot from one book to the next release. No. This series and author are a failure in basic continuity. Unless of course, it's on purpose and Van is just a horrible space cop who can't remember the very obvious leads he has.

Van's adventures never fail to keep me riveted!

Backyard Starship is one of my very favorite series. Van has a never failing source of strength, empathy and wise-ass comments. He loves to toss out Earth culture references often lost on his very diverse crew. In any case, he follows what is right and does what he can. Keep 'em coming!

I’ve read 6 books in this series and this was hands down the best one so far. It has humor, suspense and at times pulls at your heart strings. I’m looking forward to starting number 7.

Peacemaker Van Tudor is still busy doing his best to maintain law and order in the greater galaxy, but it seems to be wearing on him. While he has a tendency to do what is necessary in stopping these bad guys, he's known to skirt the law something terrible. There's nothing actually illegal about what he does, but some of it come pretty close. Still, he has Perry with him, who is his legal council as much as Van will listen to him. Van has been made aware of some pretty terrible things the criminals he's now after have done that he doesn't really know if he'll stop when confronted with a legal issue as spouted by Perry. And that could get him in some serious trouble.

They have found some creditable leads that point to a mega corporation, the Traversia Corps., as being the backers and part of the gang that are kidnapping people and dumping them into computer chips. This makes them subject to the programming of the chip and they are therefor compelled to do what they are programmed to do whether they like it or not. Their original bodies are disposed and for all practical purposes, these people have been murdered. One such victim of this scheme is Rolis, a former starship engineer that found himself mindlessly driving a scrap retrieval tug in a remote space junkyard. Rolis was rescued by Van Tudor and temporarily placed in a Waldo unit until a new organic body could be made by the Guild. Yet, Rolis found himself liking the idea of being in this mechanical body. So, with Van Tudor's permission and the acceptance by the rest of the crew, Rolis found himself a part of Peacemaker Van Tudors crew aboard the Fafnir. What happened to Rolis is exactly the thing Van Tudor has set out to stop. Most of these unfortunate kidnapped victims are living in something far worse than hell.

So, it's not easy to take it easy on anyone or thing associated with those involved in the kidnappings. Right now, he's targeting an organization called the Fade who he believes is funded by the Traversia Corps. He's also become the target of all kinds of assassination attempts. He and his crew have to be alert for anything and everything out of the ordinary and there doesn't appear to be many safe places for them to rest and recuperate.

Then he gets a call to report back to Anvil Dark and specifically to a Master Gerhardt. Master Gerhardt has been closely monitoring Van Tudors exploits, reading every single one of his mission reports and is highly pissed off at the conduct of those missions. It turns out that Master Gerhardt is a stickler for the absolute letter of the law. He things Van Tudor is taking too many liberties with his interpretation of legal situations and has now got the attention of a powerful mega corporation which fights its battles with lawyers.

Master Gerhardt tells Van that he will no long tolerate any quasi-breech of the law by anyone. He wants detailed reports on each mission with specific legal references to the actions Van Tudor and his group undertake. This is obviously going to cause Van some great difficulties. He thought that by getting rid of Master Yotov, he might find some reasonable Masters letting him do what he feels is right even if some of it is border-line. All he's doing is tracking down and eliminating criminals. He's not doing it for profit or for the glory, he's doing it because it's his job and it's the right thing to do. Master Gerhardt becomes an even greater problem later on, but then he's not!

It seems like Van Tudor and his crew seem to have a lot of downtime in this book. They are either going back to the farm in Iowa or to Tornia's home on Helso, to Schegith's planet Null World or maybe to Starsmith. All of these places are comforting, even though the farm in Iowa recently had way too much excitement. They spend a few days at these places thinking about what they are doing and you get to know more about each crew member and how much they compliment each other in their activities. It also gives Van some time to think about what he wants to do for the rest of his life. Can he even think about going back to Earth and staying permanently.

But, they do proceed on, unfortunately, with disastrous consequences. One of Van Tudor's crew will not make it back with them. And this incident isn't one they actually had to undertake and even then, Van was warned that this excursion might be costly. He didn't listen to the warnings. Still, not everything get resolved in this book. Book 7, "Kingdom Come", is available on Amazon and it's already on my reading list.

A stickler for dotting the i's and crossing the t's makes things difficult for Van

While Van is trying to find and follow new leads on his search for the people involved in the people smuggling/snuff business, a new master Gerhardt wants to make sure that Van is following the letter of the law exactly without any deviations. This makes for some fraught alterations as they investigate new planets and new businesses with links to the Fade and the Sorcerers. A continuation of intrigue, space battles and the occasional more up close battle lead to more fun in the usual vein as Van fights back against those with contracts out on him and others.

A star fight to remember

What can I saw but...wow. Once again J.N. Chaney has hit.it.out.of.the.park. I am in wonder of how this series is evolving into a tell of tells. Each chapter is a fighting rollercoaster with humor, sadness , and a touch of the human condition in it. This is one of the top series of books I have ever had the privalage of reading. If your looking for a space story with all the sci-fi action, plus a story line that does not get old, then this is the series you've been looking for. Please start with book one in this series and I would bet you will move through each book with a real need to get to all of them. Good reading, my friend.

Another thoroughly enjoyable volume in this series that takes our hero to many new adventures on Earth, known space, and beyond. There is the usual humour, excitement, and more. Like the previous volumes the story runs along at quite a pace but this time there is a more introspective note, even melancholic feel to parts of the tale as long-held secrets are revealed, new insights learned, and sacrifices made.

This was one book I literally didn't put down finishing it within a couple of days. Overall this is an excellent series I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a good old fashioned space adventure, with good and bad guys, and all shades between.

Overall, another fun read...

...but getting a little annoyed with the egregious use of dues es machina ways the authors are getting Van out of trouble. Several times magical forces have helped Van and crew eek out a win, and this book is no exception. Sheets of stealth tech that they happen to find on a bad guys ship, magical prototype fire control system, an battle field grave yard filled with all kinds of tech for the plundering, and so on. While i appreciate the occasional get out of peril and/or debt cards in a story, using several of them in one book can be bit much.

Distant Horizon brings back Van and his crew for another wild ride in the universe.

Van finds a stolen spaceship that's a big deal for some folks. It leads to a showdown with a shady pirate leader, making it personal for Van.

The crew's banter and camaraderie add humour and depth to the fast-paced story. Expect action, intrigue, and surprises as they chase down the bad guys.

This book is a great addition to the series, whether you're a longtime fan or new to the crew's space adventures. Justice has never been this much fun!

Enjoyed this

I didn't think I would enjoy this series as, at first, I thought the humour would pall. As if happens it somehow treads the line between foolishness and over the top and taught me not to judge too quickly.
If you kike hard fact based sf this is probably not for you, on the other hand if you liked The Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy or Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency then there's a pretty good chance you'll like this.
Best compliment- I'm still reading the series and have just finished book 6... and hoping there's a book 7.

A really fun one.

Just when I thought I might be getting bored with the series.... End of an arc, grand finale, worthy. Except that, happily, it's not the end? Lots of characters get spotlight moments. New characters introduced. However, I most enjoyed the laugh out loud, comic relief bits. OMGoodness! Carter Yost?Would it be real life probable. Got me to write something rather than just leave a 5 star rating. (Happy those get factored in now.)

Absolutely spectacular!!

Distant Horizon was if not the best, one of the best books in the series. I thoroughly enjoyed it!! The humor was absolutely wonderful I found myself snickering and laughing out loud while reading. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book and I hope the series keeps on going past that. Do yourself a favor and read this if you want a little humor action and a wonderful story.

At first I found the book rather tedious to get through the author's main character tends to ramble on about all sorts of things - some of it is funny and some of it is just too much filler. I've read all the books in the series up to this point and had to take a break before I read this one. However, having said that the story started to get interesting after about 100 pages and picked up pace keeping me interested up to the end. But of course there's more.

Distant Horizon is the sixth book in the Backyard Starship books. They're basically my sci-fi comfort food and what I would actually call "cozy space opera." I mean, they're still adventurous police procedurals about fighting space pirates as well as human traffickers but you never really think our protagonists are in any real danger. This gets subverted here to an extent but it doesn't detract from the warm fuzzy feeling every time I read one of these books.

character development and shiny new parts!

As always: I laughed, I cried, I almost hurled. Chaney does a great job of inserting gallows humor into tense situations, which as a (non-Space) cop, I appreciate and relate to in a way that only first responders can.
There was a loss that hit me way harder than I anticipated, which I think is a great testament to the writing quality.

what a read - what a series

Started reading this series after a couple of other series written by these amazing authors.
While not ‘better’ than, say Ruined Earth, this series is amazing and thanks to Mr Maggert and Mr Chaney for letting us come on this ride.
If you enjoy space opera with, wit, drama and an engaging story - go to no 1 of this series, strap in and enjoy - I certainly did and do…

Indiana Jones, Han Solo, Wookie Updated

One of the most fun reads yet in this series. I've never laughed as much or been on the edge of my seat as much as I have in this volume. All the characters are rich in their own right. Jojned together they are a wonderful tapestey. Chaney and Maggert are a writing team to be reconned with. SO looking forward to each volume and, I'm sure I'll be disappointed when 3 read the very lasy page of the very lasy book

The battles & attacks continue

Van has more irons in the multiple fires that he has to juggle than usual. But he’s more determined than ever to put an end to the vile groups committing murder just so the bottom feeding scum can get their sick sadistic kicks off the suffering of innocent sentient souls.

Van also finds himself butting heads with the new senior Master who nitpicks his every move. However things come to an unexpected head after an acrimonious encounter.

Too Many Distant Horizons Among The Stars

As the major crime groups continue to operate without much difficulty, the small Tudor Peacekeeper group now supported by the Master who gave them the most difficulty previously, by providing his starship and access to even more resources as action to protect the natives still surviving on Moon 109 becomes critical as the focus of Fade's plans for genocide for the underground population.

Van track the fade to the corporate roots.

Van track the criminal organization to a corporation track trough shell companies to a board member. The current master tosses the arrest out. Only to defend the planet where the original arrests happened and chase ships from a battle. To a rich resort world.

Fabulous sci fi adventure series

The worldbuilding is consistently awesome, Schegith is one of my favorite characters ever, and Horizon made me laugh and cry. The body count is high, and Van is forced to make some terrible decisions. But I laughed more often than I cried. This series is so consistently awesome that I will buy it to reread many times.

I'm simply amazed!

I'm simply amazed how these 2 authors can come up with such a wonderful wonderful choreographed theme bad thing. How they are able to entwine so many different storylines is amazing. Their knowledge and understanding of physics, space, et cetera is flabbergassing and I loved every moment of it and I truly enjoyed reading their book

Sci-fi with humour, what more could you ask for.

Six down, one to go. Each instalment seems to improve on the last, which is not to say any have been inferior.
I genuinely enjoy the relatable humour between the characters, including those that are maturing and coming into their own.
Only one book left to go now...

Keep Getting Better

I this, #6, our heros have a couple of problems with the Fade, a cooperation and bureaucracy. The first two, Van can fight, but the last taxes he and his crew. Just when you think that things are going good, a Master steps in and ruins your day. Keep reading, because it only gets better.

Space…the final frontier

I just enjoy these books even when the technology makes no sense. Bu a junkyard dog in space where they had hear about ghosts really got me going. Most of all I enjoyed the “truly aware” when faced with facts they didn’t believe. But Van Continues his adventures and I keep reading them.

These have been very entertaining stories.

I have enjoyed each of the books in this series that I have read. An excellent main character surrounded by other well defined and interesting supporting characters. Always a lot going on with dastardly villains and conflicts creating stories that I don't want to put down. Getting ready to read the next book

I am enjoying this series.

The publisher's description does a good job of describing this book. I will add that Van gets bogged down with legal niceties (read as unending paperwork, and corrections to the paperwork, and requests for clarifications, etc.) It is funny in its own way. I liked it.

The book ends in a major battle... a real melee. Pretty good.

This series is so good!

Continuing the amazing writing in this series, this book will knock your socks off.

These books always have great writing and witty dialog, but there were some laugh out loud moments in this book that had me chuckling for several moments.
