` — Bueno, como decía está bien (Sobre la hermandad de la uva) pero no estoy muy seguro de las posibilidades comerciales que puede tener este tipo de libro. Quiero decir, ¿a qué público te diriges? ¿Qué editor se va a tomar algo así en serio como obra de ficción vendible?
John Fante me fulminó con la mirada y encendió un pitillo.
— Escúchame con atención. Existe la remota posibilidad de que aprendas algo: en primer lugar, me importa un bledo que mi obra sea comercial o no.
— Venga, claro que te importa.
— Silencio, por favor. El escritor soy yo. Si lo que escribo es bueno, entonces la gente lo leerá. Por eso existe algo llamado literatura. Un autor pone el corazón y las entrañas en cada página. Para que lo sepas, una buena novela puede cambiar el mundo. Tenlo presente antes de tomar la decisión de sentarte delante de la máquina de escribir. Podría decirse que este libro es una doble biografía; la de su hijo Dan Fante y John Fante. Aunque la perspectiva del escritor está contada a través de los ojos de su hijo, no deja de ser una vida por encontrar un lugar dentro de la literatura.
Un escritor que nunca se ha sentido completo por escribir guiones de cine, que a la hora de su muerte se arrepintió enormemente por ello y que terminó repudiando Hollywood.
Un escritor que se anticipó a la literatura. Un luchador cascarrabias y fumador empedernido que no tenía nada que perder. A pesar de que es complicado incluso leer hoy a John Fante, no deja de ser un personaje enigmático.
Un escritor que entabló amistad con Bukowski del que dijo que siempre lo trató amablemente, Fante le debe a Bukowski el reconocimiento, a pesar de que este no lo disfrutó en ningún momento de su vida. La mayoría de obras fueron publicadas póstumamente, una lástima. Aunque no es el primer caso, no será el último de los escritores que se reconocen póstumamente.
Aun así; nos ha dejado algo para la eternidad. Algunas de sus obras que espero que tarden mucho tiempo en ser olvidadas.

Está publicada por Sajalín Editores, dentro de su atractiva colección Al margen, y traducida por Federico Corriente. En esta historia Daniel Smart Fante (el bueno de Dan), segundo hijo de John Fante, decide desvelar parte de su vida personal y familiar. Somos muchas las personas que llegamos a John gracias a Charles (Bukowski) y, ahora, llegamos a Dan gracias a John: definitivamente lo del «legado» en el título está muy bien escogido.

While there are some interesting family anecdotes in this memoir, particularly for John Fante fans, it gets bogged down in a hurry when the rest of the Fantes recede into the background and we're left with just Adult Dan Fante at center stage. As a writer, Dan Fante is a poor man's John Fante, consumed with all the same basic literary themes and plagued by some of the same real-life demons. Dan goes through a tough childhood. Dan grows into a womanizing alcoholic with a bad temper and no sense of direction. Dan meets shady characters rendered in two dimensions on the page. Dan falls in and out of love, jobs and sobriety. Etc, etc, you surely know this drill well.

He fancies himself as an EXTREME fella - as if the only way someone could reject his workmanlike writing would be if they couldn't handle the searing raw truth of a world where cocaine and underage hookers exist. He thinks "profound" is a dirty word and abhors literary pretension (while quoting Kafka), but is there anything more pretentious than an author thinking he's peered into the abyss of an otherwise unseen darkness? At the end of the day, at the end of 382 pages, the most (and perhaps only) remarkable and utterly unique thing about Dan Fante is that John Fante was his dad. That's harsh, but this isn't a family that sought to avoid harsh truths.

Utterly fantastic. So much of what passes as writing -- no matter the genre -- these days is contrived, commercially considered, wrought by marketing and easy handles and where it's to be shelved. This is not one of those books.

Yes -- there is the built-in intrigue about the Fante family, and readers hungry for details won't be disappointed. But this beautiful book has what too many books lack: a furious, pounding, flawed, and desperate human heart. If every you've felt like a maniac in your own mind, if ever you've felt beaten and alone -- there are things to be learned from this book. And while a clear, and capable rendering of Dan's father, mother, family, and his own fascinating life -- the true strength of this book is in it's abject refusal to quit...the unconquerable spirit, the drive to find your way back to love -- no matter the cost. There is nothing sappy, or melodramatic here -- just a man dragging every bloody demon up into scorching sunlight to share who he is and what's he's survived. It won't be an easy read -- but it will be one you won't soon forget.

I think this is Dan Fante's best--lots of good stuff here on father John, son Dan, Hollywood, the seedy underside of NYC, and cameos from plenty of other 20th century American writers. At times, Dan's real life seems crazier than the life of his fictional Bruno Dante; there are a few paragraphs that would get half your students giggling and tweeting like mad geese while a few sourpusses complain to your department chair. In other words, at least sections of it could fit into many different kinds of college classes on American literature, Hollywood or film history, writers of the Great Depression, drug and alcohol abuse, and more. This memoir will be appreciated by anyone who wants more information and more honesty about recovery movements and alcoholism as a genetic predisposition, inheritance, way of life, and so on.

Enjoyed this look at the Fante family, as I'm a John Fante fan and have read a couple of Dan's books, too. Unfortunately, some of this reads like the literary version of those drunk-a-logues that many of us in recovery have heard at meetings--alternately boastful and self-effacing without a whole lot of insight offered. I know he had struggles with his father. I know he came to love his father deeply. I don't feel that I was given much understanding regarding how that developed. When the author zeroed in on particular conversations and encounters with his parents, it came alive. I'll most likely read another Dan Fante (Bruno Dante) novel. Glad he's in recovery and writing.

La vida es la que es; las cosas malas pasan sin motivo alguno, como en las películas de terror.

Puedo entender gracias a este libro toda la obra de John Fante, la perspectiva desde su padre hasta sus hijos y su mísero final. De igual forma, Dan es un excelente cronista, la manera en la que va cambiando de temas para que no sea otra biografía más aburrida, el cómo controla los ritmos de las anécdotas etc...

He disfrutado mucho de este libro porque arroja mucha luz a uno de mis autores favoritos.

Некоторые обстоятельства и ситуации, знакомые, к примеру, по отзвукам от Буковски или собственным текстам Джона Фанте (человека гораздо более трудного, сложного и неприятного, судя по всему, чем мы привыкли считать), расходятся со сложившимися картинками. Занимательна история о гибели первого издания «Спроси у праха»: оказывается, его продвижению помешал тот факт, что издатель спиратил «Мою борьбу», и ему пришлось судиться с Гитлером. В 1939 году, ага. Судя по всему, процесс в американских судах Гитлер выиграл. Другая интересная находка: Холливудская Десятка и занесенная в черные списки Маккартни кино-публика не была розовой и пушистой — у них была клановая система «друзей», в которую Фанте по вздорности своего характера не пошел, а потому первые годы после войны и до маккартизма (45-47) сидел без работы, потому что работу «друзья» давали только своим. Правда сам он из обоймы холливудских сценаристов никогда не выпадал — еще один миф о его трудной судьбе: он, конечно, продавал свою писательскую душу за жалованье (пока его платили за то, что он каждый день ходил на работу в студию и там ничего не делал), но делал это по собственной воле (красиво жить и бухать не запретишь потому что) — а потом и эта лафа кончилась вместе с «золотым веком Холливуда». Не сказать, что и друзья от него сильно отступились, что бы нам Хэнк об этом ни рассказывал.

Жизнь же самого Дэна Фанте, я подозреваю, была сильно разнообразнее того, что он пишет тут, — пришлось несколько упрощать и огрублять, а то бы не поверили (сам он на это намекает в конце). Я, к примеру, верю, сомнения только в том, что отношения между отцом и сыном были так уж плохи, как Дэн об этом пишет.

هذه المذكرات تنتمي للأدب الذي خاض أصحابه معترك الحياة الواقعية وعجنتهم التجارب، فجون ودان فانتي ( الأب و الابن) كافح كلاهما لإثبات أفضليته الأدبية، وفي ظل هذه المحاولات يخوض ٱل فانتي معارك نفسية ( مكافحة الإدمان) وأخرى حياتية(الحصول على دخل ثابت وتطوير مهارات العمل) ..
كان دان فانتي جريئا في كتابة خصوصيات عائلته، أما سرده لحياته فكان صادما؛ كشف الكثير من انزلاقاته بطريقة عنيفة عاطفيا ومؤذية للقارئ الذي لم يتعود على هكذا اعتراف.ليثبت بالدليل أن حياته ما كانت لتأخذ منحاها الحقيقي الثابت لو بقي بعيدا عن الله، وأن البحث عن الاستقرار بدون وازع ديني هو محاولات كلها ستبوء بالفشل.

This is an interesting book on a lot of different levels. After reading Dan Fante's (largely autobiographical) fiction, I'm willing to pick up anything he writes. To my mind, he's established himself as a talented, not to mention unflinchingly gutsy, writer, without needing to rely on his father's name. But this book offers a window into the lives of both great writers, and the painful relationship between them. It's inspiring that Dan Fante has been able to write like this after so many years of ostensibly fucking up. In his own words:

"Good literary fiction has become harder and harder to find. Fewer writers willing to expose themselves and write about their own experiences in a way that contributes to the human condition - that speaks to the soul of the reader - are on the bookshelves. For me, the privilege of possessing the reader’s minds with my words in a novel for hours and days at a time, sharing my personal truth, is a great gift. As it was for my father, John Fante, being a writer is not simply a job. It is an extraordinary and precious calling."

Este libro se acaba de colar a mi top 10 no sólo del año si no de la vida.

Es honesto, divertido, ágil y cabrón pero sobretodo entrañable.

"My dad, the man I loved most in the world, a man who refused to compromise himself for anyone, the man who had showed me by example what it was like to be a true artist, was gone. We had become a loving father and son after a rocky thirty-year start. John Fante's gift to me was his ambition, his brilliance, and his pure writer's heart. He had begun life with a drunken, self-hating father, backing out of the hell of poverty and prejudice. Now he was ending it as the best example of courage and humility I had ever known. John Fante was my hero."

Just surviving being a Fante was hell enough. Dan Fante's struggle with his father, the great writer but arguably wretched human being, John Fante, battles with alcohol, drugs, women & shitty jobs, nearly did him in many times. This is a beautiful and dirty memoir about enduring when there seemed as if there was nothing left. Jean Paul-Sartre said, "Hope is the first sign of despair." Fante didn't ask for that, he just kept on moving.

Debo admitir que lo compré desconfiando y pensando que, como máximo, me aportaría un par de anécdotas divertidas del que es mi escritor favorito, John Fante. Me equivoqué, ha sido una auténtica revelación. Dan fue un digno heredero de John, al menos, en cuanto a saber escribir (y beber) se refiere. Probablemente lo que más me ha gustado es que su forma de escribir aun recordando a John, brillara de luz propia.

This is one hell of a memoir, and certainly takes you on quite a journey, if you're up to taking the ride. I have read eight books by John Fante and one before this memoir by Dan Fante, and so I already knew I liked both writers and had some idea of their family history, as their books are usually semi-autobiographical. I don't think someone new to the Fante family would have a problem starting out with this work, however, as it gives a great insight into their lives, particularly father and son- John and Dan. The book has black and white family pictures all the way through which helps further illuminate the memoir, and info at the back of the book nicely explains each picture.
Most of this book focuses on John and Dan Fante, as they are the family writers, but a fair bit is written about Joyce, the mother, as well, as we start from childhood years, through school and into adult life. The book does a good job of flitting between Dan and his unraveling personal life and John, with his constant literary disappointments and familial struggles, as well as his unfulfilling screenwriting work. Both men are pretty dysfunctional to say the least, and Dan quickly inherits his father's passion for all things booze, on a constant mission to quiet his troubled, ruminating mind. John drinks himself into depressions every time a novel doesn't get published and appears to be ever the dissatisfied artist, in constant rancor at having to be a Hollywood hack writer to pay the bills (although this work pays him very well). The journey they both go on separately and together, is really interesting and fraught with heartbreak and tragedy and Dan's exploits and scrapes, making a load of money before pissing it all away again, time after time, becomes harrowing to read, gripping as it always is. Dan Fante certainly had an extremely eventful life, and that will be soon apparent to anyone who reads this fascinating book, but also lived a very hard one indeed...

I really liked this memoir, but I like John and Dan's books anyway, so I was always going to take to it well. I would say that if you like the works of Charles Bukowski, Hubert Selby Jr and Henry Miller as well, then this will be right up your street for sure. Do be warned though, this is gritty stuff, and some of the content is pretty grim, so not for the faint-hearted at all. Anyone who likes a tough, no-nonsense, very ballsy sort of book, that lays it all out there, will surely greatly appreciate it.

Imposible resumir en pocas líneas las peripecias vitales de Dan Fante vertidas en esta impresionante obra. El libro funciona como autobiografía tanto como biografía de su padre, el también escritor John Fante, quien a su vez fue inspiración para Charles Bukowski. Y ahora parece cerrarse el círculo, ya que Dan Fante conecta más en su estilo literario con Bukowski que con su propio padre (tal y como puede apreciarse en la muy recomendable “Chump Change”, también publicada por Sajalín).
Dan dedica primero un centenar de páginas a narrar las incursiones de su progenitor como guionista de Hollywood, mientras trataba infructuosamente de labrarse una carrera como novelista (con libros tan recomendables como “Pregúntale al polvo” o “La hermandad de la uva”). Las 300 páginas siguientes se centran en las alucinantes vivencias de Dan, con sus 1.001 empleos diversos (trabajador en un parque de atracciones, taxista, detective, vendedor ambulante, conductor de limusinas o teleoperador) y una galería de personajes muy bien perfilados. También narra su descenso a los infiernos del alcoholismo, intentos de suicidio, rehabilitaciones, palizas, novias varias y hasta un par de momentos epifánicos. Para redondear este libro, aparece una serie de nombres conocidos: el productor Darryl Zanuck, los escritores William Faulkner y William Saroyan, Bette Davis o F.F. Coppola.
A pesar de una difícil relación con el broncas de su progenitor, Dan llega a elogiarlo oportunamente: “La mayoría de sus novelas las escribió porque sí, no por la fama ni por el reconocimiento. Escribía porque era escritor. Su ejemplo imperecedero hizo que yo, su segundo hijo, un inútil, un tarado y un alcohólico, lo quisiera de todo corazón”.

الكتاب صعب، مؤلم، لكنه ضروري. ليس لأنه يقدم درسًا في الأدب، بل لأنه يذكرنا بأن حتى العظماء بشر، وأن الكتابة، رغم كل شيء، قد تكون السلاح الوحيد الذي نملكه في مواجهة الوراثة الثقيلة للعائلة والجنون.

يحمل دان إرث عائلته على كاهله مثل دين يجب سداده، فهو يفعل ذلك في تلك المذكرات التي يحكي فيها جزءًا كبيرًا من حياته مع خلفية حياة أبيه وجده وكذلك أمه وكيف كانت بدايات عائلته ذات الاسم المنتهي بحرف لين إشارة لأصولها الإيطالية.
استمتعتُ بالترجمة والحكايات البسيطة والمؤثرة من رحم تجارب الحياة القاسية العنيدة. كما قدّرت حقًا الصدق الذي يحمله دان فانتي في كتابة حياته بهذا القلم الجريء..
لكن، تبًا لك يا دان! كيف كان لك قلب وأنت تمارس الجنس مع فتاة طفلة في عمر الخامسة عشرة لمجرد أنها قامت بإغراءك ولعبت بعقلك وأظهرت لك عضوها الحليق!
عند هذه المرحلة من الكتاب، لم أستطع الإكمال، ولم أستطع أن أغفر لدان فانتي مهما كان - حتى لو لعبت الخمور في عقله منتهى اللعب، كان آخر شيء أتوقع حصوله هو أن يفعل ذلك مع طفلة حتى لو كانت طفلة شيطانة.

مذكرات فانتي لدان فانتي الابن الثاني لجون فانتي مؤلف ملحمة "ارتورو بانديني"، تكشف المذكرات عن عائلة مدمنة على الكحول من الجد للأب وكذلك الأبناء، (نك ودان) حيث انهت حياة الأول وكادت تنهي حياة الثاني، دان فانتي مؤلف المذكرات، حيث عاش حياته ما بين إدمان على الكحول وتعاطي للمخدرات والشذوذ وبالتالي حياة بلا استقرار..
كما كشفت المذكرات علاقة دان المضطربة بأبيه في سنوات الطفولة والشباب، ثم توثقت العلاقة بينهما بعد ذلك... أحب دان والده ولحبه للقراءة والتأليف زادت الألفة بينهما.. تمكن من الإقلاع عن الكحول في منتصف الأربعينات من عمره.. حينها بدأ بالتأليف والنشر..
رغم الحياة العبثية جدًا حد القرف في تفاصيل المذكرات.. إلا أني أحببتها واستمتعت بقراءتها حتى آخر صفحة..

كتب دان عن حياته وحياة أبيه الكاتب جون فانتي وتحدّث عن منعطفات حياته حتى أصبح ما هو عليه اليوم من كاتب روايات وشعر. ولكن!
هل هذه مذكرات أم أدلة تُدين كاتبها عن مدى انحطاط أخلاقه وسلوكياته؟
يقول دان أنه يكتب ليس أملًا في أن يغيّر قارئه، ولكن لكي يعرف أنه بإمكانه التغير.
دان سرد وقائع وحكايات خاصة به فيها ما يثير الاشمئزاز، وعندما وصل أخيرًا إلى المرحلة المفصلية في حياته، قرر أنه كتب ما يكفي!!
كنت أشعر بالتقزز والاستنكار مما اقرأ .. لا أحكم على حياته فهذا شأنه الخاص ولكن أن يدّونها في كتاب وهو يدّعي بأنه أراد أن يظهر للقارئ إمكانية تغيير الحياة حتى لو عاش في أعمق المستنقعات فهذا ما لم أجده!

Por el título pensé que era una biografía de John Fante pero ha resultado ser una autobiografía de su hijo Dan Fante. El libro va de lo que anuncia el título, la vida desfasada del joven Dan. Lo más interesante sin duda cuando habla de su padre y su familia. Le doy un 3,5
