What would the world be like if 80 percent of the population manifested superpowers called “Quirks”? Heroes and villains would be battling it out everywhere! Being a hero would mean learning to use your power, but where would you go to study? The Hero Academy of course! But what would you do if you were one of the 20 percent who were born Quirkless?
With society wavering on the verge of collapse in the wake of the recent chaos, Midoriya has left his school and friends behind in order to save whatever lives he can out on the streets and lure All For One into the open. But the mastermind villain has his own plans and sends villains for hire after Midoriya, including one familiar face. Chief among these hired guns is Lady Nagant—a fallen former hero who delivers plenty of bang for her buck.
HORIKOSHI Kouhei Name (in native language): 堀越耕平 Associated Names: Kouhei Horikoshi
Born 1986 in the prefecture Aichi, Horikoshi first attracted attention in the second half of 2006 when he entered Shueisha's 72th Tezuka Award for Newcomers with his one shot "Nukegara" and made it to the final six, where he gained himself an "Honorable Mention". Various short stories in Shueisha's Akamaru JUMP followed over the years until he published his one shot "Oumagadoki Doubutsuen" in issue #2/2010 of Weekly Shounen JUMP.
Kouhei Horikoshi is a graduate of Nagoya University of Arts. He was previously an assistant to TANAKA Yasuki.
The path that Horikoshi is taking Deku is something I never expected to see in this series. And yet, in hindsight, was the only possible direction the story was taking him. There's so many themes of overworking oneself and a lack of self worth in Deku's character since chapter 1. And all of it has come to a head. And this is such a dangerous path to take, with overworking and self sacrifice being such an accepted practice in the anime and manga industry. Horikoshi is pushing for real change in the industry, and I couldn't be more proud of being a My Hero fan.
Even though it’s not true, it FEELS like a big time-jump has just occurred. Little Deku has become one hell of a powerhouse at long last and he’s avoiding EVERYONE as if he’s a little Batman. Sure, there’s a good reason for it, but my heart breaks a little. He always loved his friends and now he wants to fill the shoes of the greatest hero in the world… at all costs.
Me on the first page of this volume: "Man, I hope someone makes Midoriya sit down and have a mug of warm milk, and convince him that everything will be fine, please."
Me on the final page of this volume: "Bakugo. BAKUGO. I hope you have that mug bro."
I love this series so much! The last time I did so much Fan Girl's Screaming like I'm doing right now, is with the Red Hood and the Outlaws (rebirth) series!
(1) Hawks is such a fine man! I want to date him!!!
(2) I don't like the new character (the woman on the cover) so much, but her interactions with Hawks are endearing!
(3) Best Jeanist is such an awesome guy!!!!!
PS: I admit I first read some super cute boy's love fanfics about this series first before I got to the story canon! XD
All the recent chapters are honestly just masterpieces! I love so much the direction this overall story and Izuku's character development are taking. Everything is just superb! The most recent chapters are getting so emotional. They somehow managed to get past my cold heart and make me cry. Like just wow! And Bakugo's scenes!! He has become my favourite character in BNHA. I've come from totally hating him from being a total simp. I've never seen a character written as well as his was.
Now I get it. All the dark times that have happened or are yet to happen? They're important. They're Deku's OFA journey of becoming the greatest Hero! I have to admit that before this point, I didn't really see it. There were just so many other heroes who were stronger, more talented, more experienced and who'd sacrificed more. But after this, I can see that Deku deserves the mantle of OFA. He's finally earned it!
And it doesn't hurt that I absolutely dig his rugged Hero costume. It suits him!
The story in this volume started strong, like five star strong, Deku is out "on his own" kicking butts and taking names looking for the bad guys that all got away at the end of the big multi-volume fight. It has a full on the "Dark Knight" vibe. It was a good entertaining read.
But then, the talking, all the taking, talking over the battle art as if the creator was trying to limit how much art had to be produced. While we do learn more about Deku's powers as the previous holders are having a conversation and trying to convince the others to release more of their power to Deku. Then we re-hash the whole Heroic society vs. Villains (free will). Not once but twice. Once during a battle.
So strong start and a slow dragged out ending makes for just a 4 star rating that could have been five.
What a ride! I was so sucked in I didn’t want to stop reading and even got a little grumpy when interrupted, lol, but it was so gripping! Not to mention sad for Deku—guy’s going through a really rough time and I don’t blame his actions or thoughts but they broke my heart all the same. And All Might doing his best only to feel as if he failed Deku…gah, that one scene ripped my heart out!
Lady Nagant, while a really brief character, packed quite the punch in a lot of ways and I’m impressed at how the mangaka fleshed her out in such a short time yet she felt whole as if we’d seen her for many volumes.
A lot of this volume broke my heart at just what a mess everything is, but the bright spot at the very end has given me hope—so much so, I immediately had to read the next volume because I needed happiness for my boys, no matter how brief!
Violence: injuries and blood (PG-PG-13/R); fighting with weapons, superpowers, and hand to hand (PG-PG-13/R); a character is used as a bomb; bloody walls, a girl’s arm, and all over her body (PG-13/R); bloody bodies (PG-13)
Sexual: shirtless guys
Other: superheroes/supervillains/superpowers; monster like beings with “brains” outside their skulls; explosions including a building; an assassin
This arc is amazing and painful to see how alone Deku feels. Also glad to see that the cracks in the hero society have been pointed out as always being there, just behind the scenes.

Decided to start reading again after catching up on the anime. (Started on where it stopped.) It was good, had a bit of an issue with some characters, but the storyline is coming along. I think this may be my favorite arc.
In a very shocking decision, Midoriya has left school in order to find and defeat All For One as the recent events have soured society’s trust for the heroes. He will unexpectedly find himself in the dangerous sight of a former heroine who is practically a human sniper rifle as we learn what led to her downfall and her hero life a facade. The buildup to something big is so suspenseful. A (100%/Outstanding)
I loved the last page,a sun I can’t wait to see what these characters get up to in the next fight. Also the world continues to just get darker and darker.
"You've known real darkness... so you gotta know there's a way to bring back the light."
It is amazing to see how far this series has come.
Each volume continues to leave me in an emotional mess of some kind, and this one is no different.
The exchange between Izuku and Lady Nagant as they fought was so good, and the look into her past was done incredibly well. (Seriously, I love her character design.) It was also a nice touch, in my opinion, to include .
Izuku's journey has been both incredible and heartbreaking to watch. He is such an inspiring and amazing hero, and every moment leaves me appreciating his character more and more.
"I can tell you've still got the soul of a hero." ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
So much despair in this volume, and it all falls on Deku's shoulders. Or at the very least that's what he's thinking, because he understands—as much as how All Might and the previous OFA bearers understand.
"Wow, thank you so much, All Might! Oh, you were my Izuku all along?" "The moment you reached your hand out to me... was when One for All were truly born." "The public gets to stargaze at the bright and shiny side... while the dark truth gnaws away at someone else." "You don't... look back at me anymore." "If there's anything that could bolster Izuku Midoriya now, it would be..."> [Kacchan].
Okay, admittedly not quite as good as the previous volume, but still very, very good.
In this one we have the resurgence of an old "friend" of Deku's, the reveal of the identities of some past OFA users, an intense mid-air combat between Deku and a Hero-turned-bad, and the slight unravelling of Deku under the pressure (and severe lack of any kind of rest).
Was definitely getting very worried about Deku in this, but with the ending to this volume going how it went.... I think there's definitely still some hope for my favourite cinnamon roll.
Chapter notes below for personal reference: (potentially spoiler heavy)
The bento box scene is my 13th reason. Seeing Small Might crumbled on the ground yelling after Izuku might have broken me. That image is now seared into my brain.
If you ever feel devoid of emotions, please read MHA. Emotions will detroit smash you in the face.
5 stars All the way. So I think I messed up again. I'm in chapter 330. So am I in volume 32 or 33? Dude this is hard I might stop updating my manga reading here.
Hey so remember when I said I was going to stop and let the chapters build up again? Yeah, no, that didn't happen. A few days later I INHALED the rest of what was available on Shonen Jump's App. Assuming that this volume will likely be chapters 307-317 all I gotta say is that we are IN FOR IT when this majestic beast gets animated. I thought I cried a lot reading it idk what I'm going to do when I'm seeing and hearing it in action .
