I was raised to believe the family comes first always.
I was betrayed by one of them.
Then I was saved by the one person I was told to hate my entire life.
Them:
Where do your loyalties lie?
Who are you supposed to trust?
When everything you’ve ever known has been corrupted?
Trigger Warning:
Corruption is far and away my most violent and raw book to date. If you’re triggered by abuse, rape, torture, murder … well gosh, pretty much anything you might want to skip this one.
But if you’re a fan of revenge in all it’s gritty glory, this one is definitely for you.

DL Howe, I was very sorry to read about the passing of your dear brother in your lovely dedication. My condolences to you and your family at this difficult time and yes I think he would’ve liked this one too 💐
I started reading mafia romance about a year ago as it wasn’t a trope I’d been drawn to and after dipping my toe into mafia I liked the blend of dark romance and Corruption certainly has both.
Despite the hard and dark life Mikhail has he meets a girl he falls in love with and in spite of the brutality of his life I saw a glimmer of a sweet boy who wanted nothing but the light and love she brought into his dark life.
Quote from Corruption… I wipe a hand over my tired eyes. “Nothing about my life is easy.” Her voice is so soft l struggle to hear. “Then let our love be easy.”
And… Everything is coming back to life, including my thawing heart. Every second shared with her defrosts another inch until it practically beats only for her.
With her he found he had hope and joy but can the light really survive the darkness?
I enjoyed the word building and attention to detail in this story. I found myself able to see the characters and story coming to life in my mind as l read it. The author has clearly spent time doing her research and it shows and thank goodness for the kindle dictionary! I’ve never looked up so many words and phrases in a read.
There’s blood, guts and gore in all its glory, after all this is the mafia but this read is not just a mafia story, good guys versus bad guys, it’s a story of family. Two enemy families, the Russian and the Italian mob. Two families who can never be at peace but enemies and betrayal don’t just exist in the opposing mob families. Sometimes the biggest betrayals are from those you are closest to. Twists and turns I didn’t see coming and I had a couple of what the 😳 moments as I wondered where the heck the author was taking me. I enjoy being challenged and I certainly was in this one.
Quote from Corruption… Not a day goes by where I don’t wake up beside my best friend, my wife, my lover, my soulmate and think l love her even more today.” 🥰

A slow burn mafia romance that left me reeling. I did not want this book to end!! Mikhail was everything I crave in a mafia hero and Aria was the badass babe you never saw coming!
Mikhail Sokolov came from nothing. A nobody with no one in his corner until one day he was saved by a powerful man. That man gave him everything he could have dreamed of and more but just as quickly he took it all away.
Now. years later Mikhail is that powerful man. While he has other people's allegiance, and fear that is it. He doesn't have any semblance of the life he once craved. That is until the night he rescues the one woman he could never have. Rescuing Aria was not a choice he had to save her. In doing that he might have just started an all-out war.
Aria Moretti knows what her life has in store for her. She is finally going to get her fairy tale ending, prince and all. All that comes crashing down the night she is kidnapped and every limit she never knew she had is tested.
Being rescued from the men that hurt her should bring Aria peace and it does but how can she feel safe with Mikhail Sokolov? He is her father's greatest enemy and the one man that could ruin everything.
Lies, betrayal, and family ties make Corruption one of D.L. Howe's best books yet!! There wasn't a time throughout this whole book that I wasn't completely engaged and ensnared by both Mikhail and Aria. You might not think "slow burn" when you think mafia but trust me it made the story that much more delicious. It worked. This wasn't your typical mafia romance and that was what made it so phenomenal.
Get ready to fall for Mikhail & Aria like I did, and you might even see a character or two from the previous books in the KC Chronicles series.
Corruption is a story of salvation. Not in the religious sense, mind you, but it is a story of the salvation of love and devotion, nevertheless. The book starts with the introduction of Mikhail, an abandoned child that is raised by a Russian mobster to be one of his lieutenants. The terminology and sprinkling of Russian language is fascinating. If one is completely unfamiliar with Russian culture, one may find it a little confusing, but it isn't anything you couldn't pick up on. With so much focus on Russia in the media these days, it may serve as an interesting foray into an aspect of the Russian mafia state.
The narrative overall is one that focuses, as I said before, on salvation. On the power of love and devotion to another to overcome the cruelty and corruption of this world. Mikhail isn't happy in his role in the mob, and he begins to realize that everything he had been taught to believe is something that sickens him. Except Yelena. I won't ruin too much of the story, but suffice it to say that there is a lot standing between these two and their desire to just be happy and enjoy each other's love.
I recommend this book to any that like a slow-burn romance and a little action/international flavor. The characters are interesting, the love scenes are the best in the book, and the ending is satisfying. I would have loved to have delved even deeper into the world of underground crime, but this book was a great read nonetheless.
I was salivating for Mikhail's story after meeting him in Who’s the Boss? because I just love a tortured Russian mafia type and this did not disappoint. Mikhail was so very, very tortured! His life had been one long shitstorm of unpleasantness from how he was raised to the role in the organisation he ended up being forced to play. His love was taken from him in a way so horrific its no wonder he never recovered.
When he retrieves a bruised and battered Aria from the club, you can just FEEL the overactive protective instincts kicking in no matter what he tells everyone else about why he has her. I just loved how he was with her, so incredibly gentle and sweet. I fell in love with him immediately.
The backstory here and plot development added a terrific extra dimension to the developing feelings between the main couple. And Holy Heck! did Aria ever come out swinging at the end! I live for those kickass feisty FMCs who can come back even after such horrific events.
This is part of the larger KC Chronicle series though it could easily be read as a standalone.
Mikhail worked his way up from the very bottom to become the man he is now. When Arla crashes into his life, he makes the impulsive decision to save her life. A decision that could cause an all out war. Arlo thought she had everything she ever wanted before she was kidnapped. Her life is turned upside down when Mikhail rescues her. The problem? He is her father’s enemy. Lies, misunderstandings and betrayals threaten everything both Mikhail and Arla have ever known. What happens when she slowly starts to fall for the man she is supposed to hate? With Arla being the daughter of his enemy, how will Mikhail handle it when he falls for the woman forbidden to him?
