Welcome to Kipper Cottage! I write the Kipper Cottage cozy crime series set in Whitby, featuring amateur sleuth Liz McLuckie and her motley assortment of friends - and of course Nelson, the bravest bull terrier in Yorkshire.

I’d love to live in Whitby (all that sand, sea and fish and chips!) but actually live just outside Edinburgh with my husband, three kids, a one-eyed whippet and a fat black pug. I began my writing career as an advertising copywriter, and have since had novels published by Random House and HarperCollins. I also write for tv.

I enjoy psychological thrillers and crime fiction of all kinds, from the coziest of cozies to the blackest of noirs. I love talking to my readers, so please do get in touch with me via my website – kippercottagemysteries.co.uk - or on Instagram - kippercottagemysteries

Thank you for reading my books!

Death At Neptune Yard is the second book in the Kipper Cottage series and I got a chance to read both the books in the series together. There is a supernatural element introduced in the form of an old legend of the Barghest (nicknamed the Dog of Death). The legend says that whoever hears the Barghest howling soon meets their death and it seems that's exactly what is happening in Whitby around Halloween time. Once again the mystery and plot was well conceived and I enjoyed this book as much as the first one. I couldn't help chuckling when the truth about the 'legend of Barghest' was revealed in the end.

I received an e-Arc of the book from the publisher Inkubator Books and the author Jan Durham via NetGalley.

Well, it's the right time of year for a Halloween Yorkshire tale when the Goth Festival hits Whitby. I do think I have had my fill now, so plan to stop with this one. There was a good deal of nonsense that took me beyond my patience. The lady got her guest cottage completed in time for first guests. Price was right.

I might have a new cosy mystery series! And, yes, it's this one. 🥳

Liz McLuckie is a great main character. A bit of a busy body, sure. But in a charming way! 😆
Nelson the dog is also a real character. It wouldn't be the same without him- and Whitby itself. The town is such a big part of this series, in a very enjoyable way. I feel like I've almost been there.

The goth festival held some extra fascination for me personally, since I've considered actually going there to see it for real.

The participants and their almost childlike glee at having a fire and a few murders at their doorstep when on vacation made me laugh so hard. Like, yeah. Goths are a special bunch alright. Sounds like an awfully exciting vacation, if you ask me. I would give all the stars on Yelp. 😂

The Halloween Goth Festival is upon the town of Whitby in Yorkshire and retired nurse and widow Liz McLuckie has one of her two cottages ready just in time for a holiday rental. While taking her English Bull Terrier, Nelson for a walk, he starts growling at the gate to Neptune Yard but eventually keeps going. When Liz goes to her friends, Tilly and Mag's Full Moon Cafe, she is told that a regular customer, Iris, that Liz also knows may have had a possible heart attack. Liz offers to take a goodie basket to her. When she arrives, Iris tells Liz she saw "The Barghest" the dog of death. It is a great, black shaggy beast and a sign that someone is going to die. Fortunately, it was angina attack and Iris should recover just fine. But Liz lives near where Nelson stopped and growled, and Liz becomes interested as to what either of them saw, especially when an article appears in the local paper. Then there are scary howls that are heard by others and cafe worker Grazyna's 10-year twins are accused of vandalism and murders do take place. This is the second book in the series and Liz is a bit nosy and takes risks she probably should not after she is threatened, but she is good hearted. The town of Whitby, with the medieval ruins being the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula's castle is a perfect setting for a quick reading, Halloween story, though I believe dogs are only a force for good.

In this second outing with Liz McLuckie, it is approaching Halloween in Whitby and everyone is preparing for the annual Goth Festival. Even Liz, who finally finished rehabbing Kipper Cottage and has rented to a couple for the festival.
Iris, the local cleaning woman, tells of the fright she had when she saw the ghost dog, Barghest, which portents death. And soon after, a local reporter was found dead in his cottage with a bloody dog print on the wall beside him. This intrigued Liz, especially when her dog, Nelson, started to act strangely and as she began to ask questions, this seemed to put her life in danger.
A fast paced and enjoyable British cozy mystery with a return of the same local characters as they all have a part in this mystery.

Thank you NetGalley and Inkubator Books for the eARC.
What a wonderful, cozy read this was; with a delightful protagonist and a cast of interesting characters, some good, a few not so...
Liz has just finished fixing the cottage next door and is awaiting her first guests. The annual Goth Festival is starting and soon the town of Whitby will be heaving with people dressed in costume and business will hopefully be booming. There's even more excitement when there's a sighting of Barghest, the huge black dog who portents a death when it appears.
I loved Liz and the descriptions of Whitby. I wish I could teleport over! It's such a fun read, despite the murders, and I'm eagerly looking forward to the next in the series.

I was excited to read the next installment of the Kipper Cottage series and see what all of the characters are up to. It was fun to hear about the Whitby traditions and festival as well as meet some new characters. I felt like Liz, the main character, had settled in more to be part of the town and the reader got to experience more nuances in her relationships. But you could also enjoy this book even if you hadn't read the first book in the series! It was a fun read with murders and a twist (and a huge black dog that predicts death!).

*I received an eARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Trick or deadly treat? Anything can happen at Halloween.

A cozy mystery that sweeps you up in its hold and keeps you glued to the pages while you're sitting on the edge of your seat. It's well written, captivating and enjoyable. The characters are well developed, easy to get to know and realistic. A great weekend read while curled up on the couch with a warm blanket and your favorite winter beverage.

The second book in the series & it’s easily read on its own but as with all series I have to start from the beginning. This book takes place a few months after the first & Liz now has Kipper cottage renovated & ready for visitors. Another very entertaining read, which I devoured in a sitting during a power cut. I really like Liz & her assortment of friends, not forgetting Nelson who once again saves the day. There were plenty of twists & turns & red herrings, DI Flint hasn’t mellowed towards Liz but seems easier on Kevin. Of course Liz seems to be at the right place at the right time or is it the wrong place at the wrong time? I look forward to more in what is becoming a captivating series

Another enjoyable entry in the series. I'll definitely be continuing. Liz has moved, after the death of her husband, to the old part of Whitby and bought a couple of cottages with the intention in fixing them up and then renting one out. It's nearly time for the annual Goth festival and the cottage is ready for its first guests.

But the Barghest has returned! Townsfolk report hearing howls int he night and seeing a huge hairy doglike creature. Great for the festival, but the beast is supposed to portend a death! And just a day later, a local reporter dies. Though sensitive to being thought a busybody, Liz can't help asking some questions -- she truly does want to help -- though the local prickly DI is not a fan. And she's the one who discovers a connection between the deaths and a series of blackmail letters certain citizens have received.

All in all it's put together well ... all the clues are there and the resolution makes sense. There's a small side romantic plot, bit of a triangle, but it's fortunately not a huge aspect. AND the books are available in Kindle Unlimited.

It may only be the 2nd book in the "Kipper Cottage Mystery" series, but still deserves being called yet another great book jn a wonderful UK cosy crime series.

I read the first book for review via Netgalley. Loved it so much that, when I was given a little cash at Christmas, I went to Kindle and bought all 6 current books in the series! And I feel I will enjoy my time reading them all.

Jan Durham interweaves real life Whitby with a few creative additions. I never been there, but wandered around via Google Earth, and it was just how I imagined it from her writing.

She has created a good balance of likeable characters and a nice blend of cosy life and a bit of crime and mystery.

I am a HUGE fan of both UK and USA cosy crime series, and I have to say... just from 2 books... this series has shot up into my top 10. Let's see where it comes in after book 3!

This is the 2nd book in a cozy mystery series set in Whitby, Yorkshire. Liz is the main character, who along with her friendsTilly, Mags, Benedict, Nial and Kevin (Benedict's Son who is also a police officer) tend to get involved in solving local murders.

This book is set around Halloween and features the Goth Festival held in Whitby each year, and also the local myth of the Barghest (it's said that when he's heard to howl, someone will die).

It's a good book which I found very difficult to put down and I didn't guess the ending at all.

The books are standalone mysteries but they are best read in order of publication to preserve continuity of the characters and series.

I'm all ready for the next installment now...

This murder mystery story set in Whitby really grew on me! I wasn't too sure about it to start with, but then the plot started twisting in interesting ways and it was a fun story. I listened to the audiobook, which has a female narrator. The sole narrator does a lot of accents, and there was a new, very pronounced, regional accent for every side character, seemingly just to distinguish them from each other, and I found that a bit distracting. As the story picked up pace, I didn't find it quite as distracting but it was definitely very noticeable to start with before the plot really got going.

The dog of death

The Barghest has come to Whitby and it’s brought it’s curse of death with it. When Liz’s friend Iris sees the dog and then there’s a murder in town she’s skeptical but inquisitive enough to investigate. With a town full of goths for a festival and the ever cranky DI Flint lurking Liz has her work cut out for her.
This is a great new series. I’ve read both books and they are a delight. Can’t wait for a third!

Second in the series

I hope not the last. The characters are so strong, you can't help but become invested in Whitby and all of its quirky charms. The villagers among the strongest. Lovely British cozy mystery. Well developed plot and expertly written. The mystery unfolded in a perfectly told "cozy" manner. I hope the Author has another mystery up her slave as I will definitely be reading it. I highly recommend the first so in this series if British cozy is your cup of tea.

3.5* - second entry into the cosy mystery series that delivers another good book. While it starts off slowly, it does build and end with a satisfying solution. The enjoyable characters all return, and we begin to learn more about Grazyna and her boys. If you like a cosy mystery on an atmospheric town with a plucky canine character to boot, you’ll enjoy this series.

Liz McLuckie is at it again, unable to look the other way when there's a murder or two to be solved. As in book one, the plot is complex and so are the characters. All the plot twists and turns are believable, because enough clues have been skilfully planted in advance. Very well done and an enjoyable read.

I love these books, when you read you can picture the places in Whitby in your head, well especially if you have been there. That's why the characters seem so real. I hope there will be more books. Well worth five stars.

The festival in the story and the real celebrations were interesting. Still like her efforts to renovate the two cottages, but twice the rental was called by the wrong name. The mystery itself was just okay.

Despite the so-so fictional murder, the author did a wonderful job with the Yorkshire setting and detailed geographical location landmarks with actual historical and cultural descriptions. These made the book. The reader was excellent.

This story was based on a town legend of the Barghest – Yorkshire’s Dog of Death. When you see the dog, someone will die shortly. So when people start dying, everyone is scared of the legend and Liz is determined to figure it out.

Good storyline and the characters are starting to grow on me as well.

Widowed Liz McLuckie has retired early from her job as an A & E nurse in Edinburgh and has moved to Whitby, a fishing community, in Yorkshire where she bought a couple of shabby and neglected adjoining eighteenth-century cottages - Kipper Cottage and Gull Cottage - she is renovating. Her friend, The Bride of Frankenstein, alias Niall Fitzgerald, a twenty-two-year-old archaeologist is staying as it's coming up to Halloween and the Annual Goth festival week in Whitby. Niall has helped Liz get Kipper Cottage ready for her first paying guests. Seventy-odd-year old local cleaner, Iris Gladwell is in the community hospital after a suspected heart attack and a fright when she sees the ghost dog, Barghest, that portends death. Soon after, a local journalist for the Whitby Bugle, Donnie Satterthwaite is found dead in his cottage with a bloody dog print on the kitchen wall near him.

This was a superb continuation of a series by Jan Durham which first captured my attention because of its Whitby setting. I enjoyed being in the pockets of Liz as she puzzled over clues, legends and folklore and irritated DI Flint, the local detective. Well written and intriguing with some colourful characters and great descriptions of community life and the locale. Now hotly anticipating book three!

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Inkubator Books via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read, and review this book.
This is the second outing for Liz McClukie, who after losing her husband Mark, decided to take early retirement from her nursing job, move to Whitby and renovate a couple of tumble-down cottages, Kipper coattage & Gull cottage.
With the help of her some-time lodger, Niall, one of her cottages is finally completed , and her very first guests are due to arrive in the run up to Hallowe'en, for Goth week. The couple are excited for the spooky celebrations, and love the cottage.
However, people in the town get more than they bargained for when the dreaded Barghest is both heard and seen. The Barghest is a dog like creature in North England folklaw, and is known to be a harbinger of death. It big yellow eyes, and massive hairy body is enough to scare anyone, but for one woman, it brings on an angina attack. She makes a full recovery, but someone else isn't so lucky. Dead comes to Whitby once more.
Can Liz and her Mah Jong playing friends find clues to explain the death? Is the Barghest real? Why are two young boys causing havoc in the town? These, and more questions are answered in this thrilling book.
I look forward to the next one in this exciting new series. It is well worth the read, and anyone who loves Whitby, dogs, mystery & murder (only on fiction), are in for a treat!

The residents of historic, seaside Whitby are preparing for the tourist driven Goth Week when a sighting of the legendary Barghest (rough translation: ghost of the town), a huge, slobbering, yellow-eyed black dog, causes one resident to have a heart attack and is thought to be responsible for the death of another. What else could leave a pie plate sized bloody footprint on a kitchen wall? What else, indeed? It’s a question that Liz McLuckie, a new Whitby resident who has already solved one crime, keeps thinking about. She’s been warned to stay out of the way by harsh DI Flint but that doesn’t stop her. With friends including Niall, Tilly and Benedict, she peels the layers away from a scheme that affects several well known villagers. However, the closer she comes to a solution, the closer the killer comes to her.

Death at Neptune Yard is the second in this engrossing cozy mystery series. Liz McLuckie is a strong female character, using the renovation of two fishermen’s cottages to heal her grief after the death of her husband. Jen Durham brings Whitby and its history and legends alive. I’m looking forward to the next in the series. 5 stars.

Thank you to NetGalley, Inkubator Books and Jen Durham for this ARC.

After reading the first book, I was eager to see what Liz and Nelson would get themselves involved in next. This was an even quicker read for me as I was thoroughly engrossed right from the start.

The Goth festival is on in Whitby and at the same time, the legend of the mythical Barghest is very much to the fore with people seeing this Barghest and also everyone has heard the howling. Add in the murder of a local reporter and this has all the ingredients of a thrilling read. This proved to be the case. We are introduced to more local characters in this book and Liz as usual finds herself in danger due to her own investigation.

There was more humour in this one, particularly with Liz and a local councillor. I also really like the character of Niall as he provides some Irish wit at times. While I enjoyed the first book, I enjoyed this one even more as everything seems more settled. I am happy to see that there is another book planned and hope there isnt too long to wait.
