Bax always fantasized something remarkable would happen in his life. So when a decrepit man with glowing purple eyes offers him a ring intended for his estranged father, Bax accepts.
The ring speaks to Bax in a dream, tempting him with a vision of a powerful djinn. Desperate to make his fantasies a reality, Bax unleashes a creature called Ifrit, but soon learns this djinn isn't what the ring led him to believe. Feeding off the depths of his subconscious, the sinister demon fulfills what he thinks Bax wants by manipulating, threatening, and murdering. With everyone he loves in danger and a trail of crimes pointing back at him, Bax must scramble to solve the puzzle that will banish Ifrit forever.
J. L. Sullivan writes young adult novels inspired by gritty urban environments and the fantastical tales that percolate within abandoned buildings and desolate alleys. He began his writing journey in high school with a local newspaper before venturing into creating writing in college where he found himself lost in contemporary stories with magic summering just underneath the surface. His debut novel, From Brick & Darkness, is a dark reimagining of an ancient myth that won multiple awards following its spring 2022 release, with its sequel, From Ash & Darkness, out in 2025. He currently lives in St. Louis with his wife, two daughters, and a dog named Princess Penelope Picklesworth.

A coming-of-age book takes a dark turn. Be careful what you wish for could be the main theme. Or is it be careful what you randomly dream? Bax is a boy who is missing his dad and struggles to fit in. Of course, his school is full of people who are the typical vicious and mean as often conveyed in young adult books.
Ifrit is probably my favorite character. There were a number of times in the book I felt his special kind of visit could have taught some a lesson. The grass is never greener on the other side is another book theme. Bax has to go through a world of experiences to realize what he has is alright.
A dark and sometimes twisted look at coming of age. It will appeal to those who enjoy the modern approach to YA as seen on streaming services. Those who appreciate dark magic will also enjoy this book.
Disclaimer: I received a copy from the author in the hopes I'd review it. My thoughts are all my own.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have your every wish granted? Bax would have thought so, but he discovers that the exact opposite is true.
A genie. A ring. A wish. In this riveting YA novel, teenage Bax and his friends Jason and Ashley at first embrace what seems like an exciting adventure. But adventure turns into bad news, and disaster looms as things go from bad to worse. The consequences of Bax’s wishes threaten his world and everyone he loves.
J.L. Sullivan has written a captivating and well-structured novel, overlaying a coming-of-age theme on the ancient trope of the wish-granting genie. Bax and his two friends are appealing and believable. Though I don't often read YA novels, I thoroughly enjoyed Brick and Darkness! It has all the qualities I would have loved reading when I was a teen, and I think those qualities will make it equally appealing to today's young readers.
A gritty YA fantasy novel focused on djinn folklore and the exceptional actions of a teenager who must save his friends when his wish goes awry. With two companions, Bax does everything in his power to save them as he learns the dark lesson about being careful for what you wish for.
This novel could also be considered a coming of age story as Bax journeys through the emotional trials of being in high school.
A little bit darker than other YA novels than I usually read but I was hooked from the first chapter. The fast-moving plot made me appreciate the slightly harsher undertones even more. The characters were realistic and I really enjoyed their adventure.
An ARC kindly provided via Netgalley for an honest review.
This book was simply fantastic, I really enjoyed every minute of it. J.L. Sullivan does a great job being descriptive and allowing the reader to feel like they are immersed in the world. I liked how deep it was. It really made me think and contemplate many things whilst reading.
From Brick and Darkness is a young adult fantasy novel about a boy named Baxter Allen. Now unlike the other fantasies I’ve read I never came across genie fantasy which this entails. I mean yes Aladdin, but that’s it. And it was, or I am assuming portrayed close to the actual genies in Asian cultures. I haven’t read young adult fantasy since I was in middle school, and all I could think about while ready this was how much I missed the feeling of reading this genre. But before I get into how much I enjoyed this book let’s start with the writing itself. From Brick and Darkness was well written and easy to follow. Sometimes fantasy authors can fall short with bad world building, but Sullivan has thoroughly constructed a teenage life and genie mythology. And speaking of genie mythology, I want to applaud the author on continuing to reiterate information. There was never a point where I didn’t understand what was going on in the story. Next, the characters. Okay, so I don’t know if this is a standalone, but I don’t think it should be. The only critic I have is the lack of depth of the characters. I think Baxter’s feelings towards his father should have been explored more. I also think Ashley should have gotten a chapter or two about her life and perspective in order to understand her better. There is just too much more to explore in regards to Baxter, Ashley, and Jason (side characters) character development. I would have loved to have more interactions between all three of them and dive deeper into the theme of friendship. But then again this is a plot driven book, so maybe that is not the intention of the author. And Finally, the overall experience reading. I WANT ANOTHER BOOK NOW. I don’t mean to yell, but seriously this book was so entertaining. I let out a few genuine laughs and awwws. So many thrilling aspects that had me reading until it was the middle of the night and my eyes started hurting. I think what made this book this most entertaining was the fact that I did not know how the book would go, and that is what kept me reading. I also really enjoyed the commentary on human greed and bitterness which I wish I saw a lot more of in Young adult books. It is what made me feel like I’m 12 again, and literally start pleading give us a book two…If there is one.
Another young adult book that hits the spot. I loved this book from beginning to end, and it’s a message that everyone can relate to in someway. Baxter went through the good and the bad like any kid does. Raised by a single mom and a dad who was no more than mystery he began to question the “what if.” From there A mysterious djinn, a bit of dark magic, adventure mixed with suspense, and some good friends take this story places you will not want to miss
A Gritty, Dark Fantasy perfect for YA fans. Imagine what life was like if your dreams came true? Is it a blessing or a curse? This story follows Bax, who’s trying to find his place in the world in a most unusual coming of age story! After misguidedly placing his trust in a Djinn, this book is definitely a lesson in be careful what you wish for!!
A grittier YA than most in the Fantasy genre it was a great spin on the genie trope, showing the darker side of getting everything you want! It was cleverly written so as not to be preachy but the moral is definitely there. I loved the spin on it and yet it wasn’t so dark that it was a more NA than YA.
A cleverly written, dark fantasy that had me gripped from the first page! I enjoyed the pace and twists in the story, I’d definitly recommend it!
We received a copy of this book free of charge in return for an honest review. All opinions are our own
I like to read but have a hard time sitting still and devoting the time unless a book is really good. This was one of those books. I looked forward to reading it and picked it up every chance that I could. I really enjoyed the characters. I thought they were interesting and very relatable. Although as a mother, I thought (more than once) that the main character should just talk to his mom!! :) I liked the entire premise of the book and learned a few new things along the way. Mostly, I thought it was very thought-provoking about our wishes, dreams, things we feel comfortable telling others we want vs. things we want but maybe don't discuss out loud. And what happens when those things we want become a reality ... There were a couple of twists and turns and the ending wasn't predictable, which I appreciated. Overall, great book!
J.L. Sullivan’s debut YA urban fantasy From Brick & Darkness takes readers on a wild ride. When an old man gives Baxter Allen a purple ring, he enters a world he can’t control, and everything he does to fix it makes it worse. Jinn, Djinn, or Genie, all these words conjure magical creatures who grant three wishes. Just rub the lantern, and we will have riches beyond our wildest dreams, but Bax doesn’t get a lantern, he gets a ring, and he doesn’t get instructions, no user’s manual, nothing to tell him what to do. Bax, lives in St. Louis, Missouri with his mom in an apartment across the hall of from Ashley, the annoying. If only Scarlett still lived there, his life would be perfect. The only thing that would make it better was if his father returned. Why wouldn’t his mother talk about the man who’d abandoned them so many years ago? All these things are running through his mind as he rushes home from playing video games with Jason, his best friend. An old homeless-looking man sits on his stoop. He holds out his gnarled hand and presents Baxter with a ring, tells him it’s from his father, and disappears. He shows the ring to Jason who helps him decipher what the ring means. Bax hopes the ring will reconnect him to his long-lost father and clasps it in his hand, brushing the purple stone. The smell of burning hair fills the air, and a creature that looks something between a Hobbit and an Ewok stands before him. Its high-pitched voice says, “It is Djinn,” because Djinn speak of themselves in the third person, and the story is off and running. “Janni” helps Bax discover an ulterior world filled with magic and pure evil when Bax needs Djinn more powerful that Jinni to do his bidding Jinni, Ashley, and Jason research the world of Djinn and Genies and Ashley proves her superpower is in finding information. But in spite of Jinni’s warnings, and his obvious fear, Bax summons the more powerful Djinn, Ifrit. What happens next is mayhem at its worst, and Bax finds himself trying desperately to put the genie back in the bottle, so to speak. When people start dying and ending up in intensive care, Bax fights sleep because that is when Ifrit can read his subconscious and through Ifrit’s own interpretation, wreak havoc on the people Bax loves and would never dream of hurting. Sullivan creates an urban world where the magical and terrifying exist just under the surface and in the shadows. His characters leap off the page and make us care. We fear for Ifrit’s next victim, and root for Bax as he puts himself in danger to save his friends and family. Sullivan’s From Brick & Darkness shows the inner workings of an ordinary young man who does extraordinary things to put the world right again, and with the help of his friends and his Jinn, he does just that. This page turner will suck you in and have you reading into the night to find out what happens to Baxter, Jason, Ashley, and Scarlett. The old saying, “Be careful what you wish for,” is the motto of this story, and what a story it is. This is a full five star read and comes highly recommended!
Brilliant premise and the execution was excellent. A dark and engaging YA fantasy, action packed and well-written. The world building was clever and fantastic. Highly recommend.
In this thrilling fantasy novel, get ready to be transported into the mystical world where one will be roped into the chaotic mindset of a kid who juggles his real life and the mysteries of the hidden magical world.
From Brick & Darkness is a contemporary retelling of Aladdin’s lamp—with a twist. Fifteen-year-old Baxter Allen, bullied at school, longs to meet the father he never knew. The YA novel follows Bax and his friends as they deal with the unexpected and dark consequences of summoning a powerful djinn.
J. L. Sullivan seamlessly weaves the fantastical realm of djinns with the very real—and at times harsh—world of high school. He’s crafted believable characters, full of doubts and fears, at least at first. As the story progresses he shows how Bax and his friends decide loyalty is stronger than fears and bravery sometimes is the only choice you have. The result is a well-written and captivating story that’s difficult to put down.
J.L. Sullivan has done a great job of setting the scene and letting us get accustomed to the world in the beginning. I really liked how the action ramped up, the mysteries were revealed and then deepened, and the characters grew both inside and out throughout the course of this book.
I enjoyed seeing how the characters (both good and evil) have developed, learned, and adapted along the way.
This book has plenty of action in it, there are twists and turns, and plenty of danger and mysteries to navigate. It's hard to put down. Well done.
I really liked this. There is no nonsense with our protagonist. I liked how Bax has a determined and confident bearing. I enjoy the magic of the world and how the author allowed us to picture them in our minds through his words. Well done, and we get the sinister feel, drama, action, and so much more throughout the story. The writing is crisp and clear.
The storyline was very entertaining and inventive.
The writing was amazing. I loved that it had me engaged every step of the way and the plot twists for multiple characters and manages to tie everything together.
Baxter is a teen boy who has grown up poor and watched as his mother has worked hard to provide the necessities of life for them both. He cannot help but wonder how different life would have been if his father had been around and yearns for a relationship with him. Baxter spends his days either at school where he tries his best to fit in, or with his best friend Jason playing video games. Although content with his life, young Baxter cannot help but dream big and hope for something extraordinary to happen in his life. Little did he know that is exactly what would happen, but unfortunately not in quite the way he had expected.
When Baxter returns home one evening, he finds an old man with glowing purple eyes standing on his doorstep. The man creeps Baxter out but tells him that he has a ring that is intended to be a gift for Baxter’s father. Reluctantly, Baxter takes the ring thinking that perhaps it can be sold, and the money used to help his mother. When he starts having weird dreams about the ring, he realizes the ring might be worth keeping. When Baxter accidentally rubs the ring and produces a powerful dijin he feels that his dreams may finally come true. Although happy to have a dijin to fulfill his wishes, Baxter desires more and learns he can summon an Ifrit which is even more powerful than the dijin. Now all of Baxter’s wishes will become true but at what cost?
The Ifrit turns out to be a sinister demon that feeds on Baxter’s subconscious thoughts and will go to any length to make Baxter’s dreams and fantasies come true. Before long the Ifrit has left a trail of death and destruction in its wake. Baxter’s life is turned upside down as it all points to him. Now it is up to Baxter, Jason, and their friend Ashley to find a way to stop the Ifrit and banish it from their world forever. Will they have what it takes to stop Ifrit?
I loved this book and was drawn into the story from the first pages. I loved the character of Baxter and felt myself rooting for him as he struggled to fit in. I understood his desire to want more and loved the magic ring that could produce a dijin to help him fulfill his dreams. I found myself shaking my head as he unleashed the Ifrit and knew that nothing good would come of him being so greedy and wanting more power. I loved the characters of Jason and Ashley and admired how they stood beside their friend and helped him out even when times got tough. This book was well written with a great storyline. Not only did it take some twists and turns, but it had some hidden, underlying messages about power and greed. A fantastic read!
What would you wish for if you had a genie at your beck and call? Even a low-level genie like a Jann? Be careful what you wish for.
On his way home from a friend’s house one night, Baxter encounters an old man sitting on his front stoop. The old man is looking for Bax’s father in order to give him something. Bax hasn’t seen his father in years so the old man gives Bax the ring meant for his father. And thus the adventure begins. The ring is similar to Aladdin’s lamp in that when you rub it, a genie appears. But this isn’t your regular Disney genie. It’s a weird-looking creature that smells like a skunk. And it doesn’t exactly grant wishes like the genie in Aladdin does.
This “Janni” shows Bax a world where magic exists and Bax realizes he needs a more powerful genie in order to get what he wants—his father back, a better place to live, and the girl Scarlett to be his girlfriend. Unfortunately, that means Ifrit – an evil genie who wreaks havoc on Bax’s friends and world. Bax learns some important lessons along the way to a satisfying ending. I do, however, wish they had a better cover for the story. It really has very little to do with what’s going on in the story. And I know, we aren’t supposed to judge a book by the cover, but a lot of people do and the cover should reflect that.
Recommendation: If you like your fantasies a little darker than the regular YA fantasies, pick this one up. It’s a good story with a satisfying ending and you won’t be disappointed.
Disclaimer: I received a final and/or advanced reader copy of this book with the hope that I will leave my unbiased opinion. I was not required to leave a review, positive or otherwise, and my opinions are just that… My Opinions. I am posting this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising”
“I just accepted a gift from some creeper outside my building. Something every little kid knew better than to do. Who knows where that ring came from?”
The ring looked pretty worthless to Bax…until, one day, he rubs it and some genie shows up.
“The old man gave me a winning lottery ticket after all—a short, hairy lottery ticket.” What more could a high school kid ask for?
How can it serve? Well, obviously, Bax had lots of wishes he could think of. Thing was that this smelly genie couldn’t grant any of them…at least, not in the traditional sense for a genie. For instance, apparently, he can fetch things like a dog—things like a hundred-dollar bill from a bank that’s closed.
“We found a thief who looks like the offspring of a monkey and a dog.”
But what if you wanted another genie with more power—one that could do MORE for you? But, of course, nothing came that easy. Now there’s a second genie that apparently kills without a wish. Uh-oh!
Story had a simple and engaging narrative with a clever wit, especially when the character talks of his humiliation at school and the jocks he hates. Stories about genies and wishes that go awry are always compelling, and this book certainly delivers. It was interesting how the kids tried to figure out this whole “djinn” thing through questions and internet searches. Also, Bax’s dreams seem to be a key as well. Story was compelling for the most part, but there was some lag and some trivial scenes.
Though this isn’t your traditional genie story with fantastic magic and all, it still gives off that warning of “Be careful what you wish for.”
“The most powerful wishes aren’t said with words.”
Deep down, this was what Bax wanted—to get rid of the dumb jock and take his pretty girlfriend. Will Bax and his friends be able to stop the monster that he created before it kills again?
Story blends juvenile hijinks with classic horror and supernatural folklore. A great read!
Bax is a young lad in middle school who has a pretty ordinary life, he is the invincible kid at school and just flows along with existence, but he has always wanted something special to happen to him, something out of the ordinary, but nothing ever does!
One day, he is heading home after playing video games with his best friend and he is trying to beat his mum back home so he doesn’t get in trouble for staying out too late, but when he gets to his apartment building, there is someone waiting on the front steps. It appears to be a homeless man who is not in the best of health, apart from his glowing purple eyes, however, when he gives Bax a ring which is meant to be from his estranged dad, he takes it thinking if he figures it out, then maybe he will know something more about him.
Unbeknownst to Bax, he has just been given a ring with a Djinn in it and it calls to him through a dream, it tells Bax he can have everything his heart desires if he summons it, but the Ifrit, as it is named twists Bax’s subconscious fantasies and threatens, murders and manipulated the people around him instead.
All Bax now wants to do is to banish the Ifrit forever, but can he work out the how, when and where before the streak of crimes the Djinn is committing are linked back to Bax? This is a fantasy adventure where wishes are granted, but not in the expected way and it becomes a race against time to save the people he loves in this story which talks about choices, consequences and morality in a way everyone can understand while keeping it interesting and engrossing throughout.
A high school-aged boy accepts a ring from a purple-eyed stranger that the old man claims is a connection to the young man’s long-estranged father. The teenager and his two friends have no idea of the terrible chain of events the boy unknowingly unleashes when he rubs the stone in the center of the ring. Part science-fiction, part fantasy, part nail-biting thriller, part horror, part mystery, part magic, and part teenage angst, From Brick & Darkness is a story of love and loss, regret and remorse. This is a classic lesson in being careful about what one wishes for, and facing the consequences when one’s wishes come true. The tale takes readers on a rollercoaster ride of emotions in a heart-pounding fight of good versus evil. Debut author J.L. Sullivan has written a YA adventure novel that is engaging enough for an adult audience. Sullivan has created a cast of flawed but believable characters readers can’t help but relate to and root for. The tautly constructed plot throws the protagonist and his friends into a baptism-by-fire situation of their creation. And the three must face the challenge of fighting for survival and protecting those they care for. The story grabs readers by the throat and doesn’t let go for a minute. The plot ramps up to a breakneck pace with twists and turns that compel readers to keep turning the pages well past their bedtime. From Brick & Darkness is one of the most imaginative and descriptively written tales this reader has ever read. One could almost feel the heat from the sinister, demonic Ifrit breathing fire and the slash of its tail across the protagonist’s face. If you start out reading this book doubting the existence of djinns and parallel universes, you’ll be questioning your beliefs when you get to the end. This terrific tale will capture the interest of every reader who appreciates flawed characters who stand up for themselves and fight for what they believe in when it counts the most. From Brick & Darkness has more than earned the five-star review this reader has given it.
Having all your dreams come true sounds like a great thing, right? Well, you might think differently after you read From Brick & Darkness by J.L. Sullivan! This is a YA Fantasy focused on djinn mythology.
Bax and his friends embark on what seems like an exciting adventure, but things quickly go awry. This takes quite the dark turn and is very compelling. ‘Be careful what you wish for’ is one of the themes in this coming of age tale, and it surely makes you wonder what you would do if you were in Bax’s shoes.
I am picky about my YA reads, but J.L. Sullivan’s debut checks the boxes I expect and more. The writing is fantastic, with pacing that keeps you reading. I absolutely loved the mythology. Djinn are fascinating to me, so reading this was a real treat!
Overall, From Brick & Darkness was an excellent read. I am looking forward to reading more from this author. If you’re a YA Fantasy fan and you enjoy dark stories, check this out!

First things first I learned that djinn meant genie, which I didn’t know when I picked the book up. After that things fall more firmly in place and begin to make a little more sense. This is a pretty fast paced YA book that pulls you in from the start and won’t let go, kind of like the Djinn.
Bax just wants something memorable to happen in his life so when an old man gives him a ring he takes it. This sets Bax on the journey of his life after he starts having dreams about a powerful djinn. As dreams become nightmares when an ifrit is unleashed upon the world and this demon feeds upon his subconscious. Now Bax must solve a puzzle to banish the ifrit forever. With a trail of crimes, destruction, and death that point back to Bax can he solve this puzzle and survive?
This is truly the age old tale of being careful what you wish for because oftentimes dreams can be worse than reality. This was a fantastic coming of age tale. It was fantastic to see the character development in Bax as he works to banish the ifrit. This was a fast paced book that certainly keeps you engaged and coming back to read it every time you have a free moment. Give this one a try even if it seems out of your wheelhouse, because it is definitely worth it.
Poor Bax, he should have known that nothing good comes from making wishes with a djinn. They are sneaky and evil beings. Well, Bax did discover this later in the story but by then so many things had gone wrong. While the havoc that Ifrit caused towards Bax and his friends did get bigger, there was still a tone about the overall story that kept it from being too dark or scary. This is because the book appears to be marketed for the 13-18 age range.
So, in regard to the book, it is marketed correctly as there is nothing too scary that the targeted reading audience could not handle. In fact, I think that this age group would be able to relate to Bax and his friends. Yet as someone who is older, I could not connect as strongly and wanted a scarier read. Although, I did still like this book and would read another by this author.
I very much enjoyed this coming of age, YA, fantasy book with a dark twist and a side of murder. I enjoyed the characters and the relationships between them. I got a Harry Potter vibe from the 3 main characters, Baxter and his two friends Jason and Ashley. Baxter and Jason are best friends, who end up befriending Ashley who is the know it all at school and who they previously didn’t like. But when Baxter accepts the ring and unleashes his own Djinn, a type of genie, he is going to need some help in figuring it all out. I loved how all of the characters interacted with one another, and even though it was a fantasy book, the actions of the characters, felt natural and realistic. I really loved the relationship between Bax and his mom as well. The author did a great job with the character developments and how they matured and grew. Just as we think things are beginning to get wrapped up, the author throws another curve ball into the mix. This is a great novel for both teens and adults who enjoy fantasy with a dark twist.
J.L. Sullivan has done an excellent job with the world- building in From Brick & Darkness. This story proved to be suspenseful and intriguing. Every time I thought it was done, something else came into play. This definitely kept me on the edge of my seat and was very easy to read. Not only was this a joy to read, but it also caused me to take a step back and ruminate on some of the points, especially towards the end, which was something I hadn’t predicted as I was reading. Everyone dreams of a better life, even the rich and famous. What would you do to make those dreams come true? This would definitely make a good read for your book club as it is very thought provoking and it would bring about very interesting conversations. Overall, I enjoyed the book and found myself sympathetic towards the main character, Baxter, and his friends.
Bax is a teenage boy who thinks his life is typically boring, that is until a strange man with purple eyes talks to him outside of his apartment building. The man offers Bax a ring claiming that it is for Bax’s estranged father. Bax, being curious, takes the ring. He shoves it into his pocket. Thinking the ring is just a gaudy piece of costume jewelry, he doesn’t think much about it. Bax ends up rubbing the purple jewel on the ring and an ugly creature appears before him.
The creature tells Bax it is a Janni which is a type of Djinn. Bax can’t believe his luck. His luck quickly turns when Janni is not what it seems. There is a darkness to the creature and the ring. Nothing is as it seems and Bax has to find out the hard way.
At first the book seems like a typical coming of age fantasy but it turns dark in an instant making it much more enjoyable to me. It was twisted and yet easy to read and relate to. I definitely recommend this book for YA and adults alike.
From Brick and Darkness By: J.L. Sullivan Review by: Susan Ratchford 5 stars
This book had me captivated from the first page! Wonderful coming of age novel! You will enjoy every second of Bax, his friends and their Janni (Genie)! The enchanting word play and vivid sensory details like “ bleach and fried-chicken air” that Sullivan uses, easily transport you into their world and for me made me remember things about High School I've long forgotten. The characters were so fun to get to know, Janni is so unique and adorable that he just melted my heart and also made me laugh. It also has the perfect amount of mystery and suspense to keep you guessing and itching to know more about Bax and the Djinn’s. Overall this book has everything you could ask for: a great story, enchanting characters, fantastical events, thrilling suspense, and a memorable moral. I can't wait to read more of J.L Sullivan’s work. This has been one of the best books I have read in a while. Thank you!
I love books that make you think and your mind wander as you read through them, This book did just that. I felt a lot for the characters and the story that surrounded them. The book immersed me and intrigued me!
First off I loved the eerie sense of this book. Bax was such a character that had a lot of heart that you could easily feel for and connect to.through out the story. His friends were connectable as ewll,. I loved how realistic the story was and how easily you can picture yourself in the characters shoes. Something else I loved was the wish making part of the story, we are all vulnerable at times, and sometimes something as a wish granting thing can change it for the better or very much fool us and take advantage. The story was gripping and held me tight as I read. Its something everyone would enjoy I would say. I personally loved it!
The book was such a good and compelling read. I was hooked and immersed all the way through. I could not put this don. Needless to say, a very much high recommendation from me for this must read book!
This was an excellent reading experience! And yes, it truly was an experience, learning about djinn and Ifrit along with Bax. Seeing his prejudice as he walked his path, and his growth as he realized his mistakes. This story kept me engrossed from beginning to end. I truly adore fantasy stories, and I’m a sucker for a young adult read. This was such an excellently written glimpse into getting wishes granted and the perils of not being careful what you wish for. It brought to mind a lyric by Daughtry, “Be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it.” If you like modern takes on fantastical and mythological themes, this is definitely a fabulous choice!
Would you like to have all your wishes come true and how far would you go to get them? A YA tale about a boy called Bax who meets a man with purple eyes, who gives him a ring containing a djinn that can grant him wishes, which he claims belonged to his absent father Greg. Some things are too good to be true and Bax soon finds out that there are consequences to wishing your deepest desires and some secrets are better left untold. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from this author. I received a free copy from Voracious readers in exchange for my honest review.
