Rate this book
NEW FOR 2022! A-Z from experts on English Springer Spaniels from puppy to old age.

At 245 pages this is the most detailed guide to raising & training English Springers.

English Springers are energetic, handsome, intelligent, enthusiastic, & extremely loyal. They get along with everybody; they are the gundog of choice for many - & lots of FUN!

They are also easy to train - provided you use the right techniques.

This book has over 50 pages devoted to TRAINING: Housetraining & Crate Training, Obedience Training, Collar & Lead (Leash) Training, Teaching The Recall, & How To Start Gundog Training.

Learn step-by-step how to train your lively English Springer Spaniel puppy to become a well-adjusted adult you can take anywhere and - most importantly - one who comes back to your call or whistle!

Author Linda Whitwam has joined forces with Kennel Club Assured Breeders, veterinary surgeons, ESS Health Co-ordinators, trainers of working Springers, a rescue organisation, an international show judge & an American breeder who has produced multiple Springer champions.

Together they share their advice & experiences throughout the pages of this book.

Learn the best way to deal with typical English Springer puppy issues such as nipping, jumping up, running off with things in their mouth & pulling on the lead (leash).

This book, the 19th in the Canine Handbooks, Amazon’s No.1 Dog Breed Series, covers many other topics, including:
- Bringing Puppy Home
- Avoiding Separation Anxiety
- Exercise - How Much & How Often?
- Socialisation
- What Makes English Springers Tick
- Typical ESS Traits
- A-Z on English Springer Spaniel Health
- Feeding
- Grooming
- Dealing With Allergies
- ESS Rescue
- Caring for Older Springers

If you haven’t got your puppy yet, there’s a detailed chapter on how to spot good & bad breeders & then how to choose a healthy Springer pup with a good temperament.

A happy, well-trained English Springer Spaniel is an absolute joy; this book teaches you how to achieve that.

A very thorough guide. I read this in preparation for being a first-time springer owner, and found Whitwam covered the breed, training, home-life, and dog health with the depth I was looking for. Everything was beautifully expressed and easy to read.
I highly recommend this book to any other prospective springer owners.

We haven’t had a puppy for more than 20 years (adopted rescues) so felt I needed reminders before bringing our ESS puppy home in 3 weeks time. It was an excellent refresher and learned about new stuff available eg vet bed. Good discussion about puppy socialisation period. I’m sure I’ll come back to it when starting some training down the track a bit. Highly recommended 🌟
