A lot of the recipes are incredibly accessible. I like that the book gives a little bit of cultural information and film references to the dishes rather than just diving into an ingredient list.
I do feel like the difficulty levels listed in the book are vague. The rating system gives zero insight as to what may prove tricky. I also would have appreciated ingredient alternatives (yes, I know Google is free).
The short story recap that was included with each recipe was wonderful. They are also the reason that I am going to have to rewatch a lot of the Studio Ghibli films in the near future.
I am a huge fan of the Studio Ghibli movies, so I was excited to check out this cookbook. The cookbook includes 24 recipes for mains and desserts inspired by the movies. Each recipe includes a background, including the movie the recipe is inspired by, difficulty rating, ingredient lists, and numbered directions. Furthermore, every recipe includes photos of the prepared dish, the ingredients, and the process of making the dish. I appreciate that every recipe includes a photo of the actual dish, and the photos of the process are useful to follow along. Most of the ingredients can be found at grocery stores and supermarkets, but there are a few specialty ingredients that will need to be bought from an Asian market. As a vegetarian, I cannot make any of the mains as they are (even the vegetable soup calls for chicken boullion), so I would have loved it if the mains included alternative ingredients to use. However, I am definitely intrigued by the desserts, especially the chocolate cake from Kiki's Delivery Service (minus the gelatin in the icing). That said, I appreciate the time and effort that went into creating this cookbook, and it would be a great addition for fans of the Studio Ghibli movies.
Definitely unofficial and a bit disappointing. The format gives a quick review and synopsis of the film related to each recipe with a pic of the movie poster/cover. (One movie has the wrong film cover tho).
Some recipes are just “inspired by” a film, not actually something shown in the film. Which likely explains the glaring lack of film stills of the recipe in question.
As a cookbook it’s fine with loads of in-progress pics; much like a printed version of a blog post. The difficulty rating scale goes from 1-5 soot sprites but no recipe gets a 5 sprite rating.
Pretty disappointing, partially because it is an unofficial cookbook - there's no movie stills to show if there is a recreation, which could've been fun.
There are some cute ancedotes about the movie referenced and why that particular food item, but the recipes are also incredibly basic - onigiri, spaghetti, ramen, etc. Oh well.
What I've learned is that Ghibli films know how to make mundane food look so appealing.
I liked the recipes there was just some typing and picture errors throughout the book. For the Okayu the wrong picture was used or giving the wrong year for Tales of Earthsea. The author did put pictures for each step of the recipes which was very helpful.
None of the recipes themselves really grabbed me, but I appreciate the pictures for each step of the recipe. There were some minor grammatical and printing errors that bothered me a little but I am not going to fault the author.
One of the better instructions I have seen in a cookbook. For a cookbook I would give the instructions a 5 star, but the fact that this is a Studio Ghibli Cookbook... it felt more like a 3, so I am meeting it in the middle and giving the book a four.
This is the strangest formatting I've ever seen in a cookbook, with some directions completely unexplained and weird process photos. But the concept is cute and the recipes look mostly edible, so not a total loss.
This was nice as an idea book...it was bad as a recipe book. Not all directions were written and some of the ingredient amounts were way off. We tried: Okayu Homemade Hamburgers Howl's Bacon & Eggs Ramen Beef Stew Spaghetti with Meatballs Beef Stroganoff
YUM! One of the most wonderful things about Studio Ghibli films are the depictions of food. Mouth-watering ramen in Ponyo, bacon and eggs in Howl's Moving Castle, onigiri in Spirited Away, herring pumpkin pie in Kiki's Delivery Service... ok maybe not that last one. But all these foods and more are represented in this lovely book. Easy to follow recipes and the lore of each dish in the Ghibli world. Gorgeous!
This is a great little cookbook for kids who love studio Ghibli with some dishes that were familiar to me like burgers, eggs and bacon, and vegetable soup. There were also several recipes that I remember from the movies and can't wait to try. They do have some ingredients that will be hard to find in most grocery stores.
Cute little captions with each recipe. Needs some editing, since there are a couple of mismatched photos to recipes. Lots of the recipes have you separate egg whites and yolks. One cake recipe has 4 different baking temps and times, not sure why. It seems a bit too complicated to use with children.
