Eva is a popular painter on the verge of unbelievable acclaim and success, but her inability to reconcile the public perception of who she is, versus her actual self, allows the SPIRITBOX to transport her to a surreal world, where she finds herself trapped in the realm where all our false shadows become real and dangerous.
This felt more like a personal reflection of Courtney LaPlante’s than it did a story meant for the consumption of other people. I didn’t always understand what was happening or why. My main dissatisfaction came from how much of the story came from Eva’s exposition rather than getting to see it. There’s a panel where she mentions the creatures following her are waking up, and really, that should have just been drawn as a closed eye in one panel and an open one in the next. The medium didn’t feel like it was always used to it’s fullest extent.
All of that being said, I still give this a strong four stars. The end really helped make up for my confusion and uncertainty of the story, and Eva’s exposition went full circle and became the reason I really felt like I understood the context of everyone’s actions. The art style was absolutely PERFECT for the surrealist story elements; I loved the fish-eye effect and the extreme colors.
This novel needed a better editor, one who wouldn’t let missing punctuation get through. There were lots of places that needed a period or comma that didn’t have one, which was very distracting and also took away from my overall appreciation of the quality of the work.
It’s a great story, a good metaphor, and pulls itself together really nicely at the end.
Real score: 3'5 I honestly have to say that this wasn't what I was expecting, but I liked it anyway! This whole graphic novel was a deep and beatiful concept and the paralelisms with the album lyrics were really cool and ejoyable! Love how it sinks in feelings like insecurity and self doubt and how it portrays the struggles of being an artist (of whatever type) and it makes you ask yourself a huge question as a creator: Are you creating for yourself or are you doing it for others validation? I would have loved more explanations about what is the spiritbox. I think this could have been a longer proyect with better explanations or even a proper writen book. But we don't know, maybe Courtney would do more in the future, I know there's so much lore of Spiritbox! Spiritbox is one of my favorite bands and very personal to me. Courtney and them deserve all the love in the world!
