I love the meditations presented by Fr. Mark Toups but this one was by far the most moving lenten reflection I've ever encountered! We are asked to fall in love with Jesus, to look into his eyes, to speak privately with him late at night around a campfire. The meditations each week pull us so close that you can feel the atmosphere change as each week leads us closer to Holy Week, which itself is amazing and truly painful. I dont know how he will top this study next year!
As an evangelical Christian, I've read MANY devotionals. A Catholic friend usually gets me the Little Black Book for Lent, but this year her Bible study was going through this devotional. Fr. Mark Toups' ARRR method -- acknowledge, relate, receive, and respond, was new to me. It was a little out of my comfort zone. I don't usually "imagine" myself in scenes and then "listen" for what Jesus might say to me. I prefer lots of scripture commentary and background information, but doing some imaginative reading wasn't terrible. My own Bible study group is reading Dane Ortlund's, Gentle and Lowly, which echoes some of this Lenten devotional's same thoughts (in a more academic context), so they were nice complements to each other.
So thankful for Fr. mark Toups! I did this devotional with my friend group. This book deepened all of our prayer lives. The repetition was hard but it helped us all grow. This Lenten season, I really felt like I was walking with Jesus through each and every story of the lectionary and then leading up to the tridium. Easter vigil was all the more moving just being present in each story.
“It’s easier to know someone than it is to love someone”… Fr. Mark took me on a journey to love Jesus and I’m so thankful.
