Broken by war. Enslaved by a corrupt queen. Imprisoned in a frozen Hell from which no man has ever escaped before…

Charles Raptor is a soldier, loyal and true. But after 18 years of fighting, he has one wish—to retire to a life of peace with a new wife in the country of his birth. But war isn’t finished with Charles Raptor.

Falsely convicted of a crime he did not commit. Torn from his wife and family. Sold into slavery to a tribe of dwarves. Condemned to a life of grueling labor in a prison, a thousand miles from freedom, run by a sadistic overseer who hates men with a passion.

None of this, by itself, could break him. But to see his wife in danger, her life hanging by a thread, while he remains locked in a cage…

To rescue his wife—to redeem his name—to reclaim his freedom, can Charles become the Rebel Slave that will give birth to a legend?

Charles Raptor is an honourable soldier that has fought many wars and all he wants now is to go home to his wife Wren. But when he arrives he is uneasy about the changes that the town has gone through. Nothing has happened as they have an Orc living in the house and to make matters worse his poor mother has had to move out of her bedroom. Charles knows that he needs to find a job but that isn’t easy as places can’t hire man anymore. The tables have been turned by the Queen’s orders and the people have no choice but to follow the rules. Charles agrees to take a job against his best judgement and it lands him in prison after been double crossed. His life is about to change for the worst as when he is sent to Trollheim as a slave. Can Charles find a way to escape and who can he trust to help him?
The days turn into months but the men carry on with their plan to escape but just when Charles thinks about his future with Wren it is taken away and he has nothing left to live for. But the men won’t allow him to give up as they need him to lead them.
What happens next is a miracle in itself but where to from here?
Will Charles be able to get his revenge on the dwarf that took his life away from him?
A great read fill of pain ,suffering but also hope. The ending makes me have to read book 2.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC copy. This is my voluntary review.

If you want an adventure story that keeps you cheering for the underdog this is a book to read. The author paints his characters with a full palette of colors and his cities and lands as well. We have a motley crew of civilization thrown together in this story - humans, dwarves, orcs, gnomes, halflings, and more (no spoilers). They have creative names and nicknames and I admit to laughing out loud a few times as I read the story.

I was on the edge of my seat and frustrated by so many setbacks that seemed to befall our hero, Charles Raptor, but his enduring spirit and will kept him and others going with hope that seemed pointless more than once.

The author has an interesting concept of eradicating one of the species for the crimes of their forebears and in an unjust world rife with corruption it’s easy to see how it might happen. When the entire system is against you how are you meant to get ahead and succeed? Parallels to how we’ve treated people spring to my mind.

There are detailed fight scenes, stories of abhorrent rape and cruelty and yet the book is never gory or gratuitous making it suitable for a wider audience.

Queen Gretchen, Fartus, Boyle, Vulture, and Wren are just a few of the colorful characters you either love or despise but want to read more about. This is a story to lose yourself in and savor each delicious word of.

Insufferable

This entire book is just mediocre attempt to write anti-‘woke’ propaganda. It uses fantasy races as one to one stand ins for the worst stereotypes of real life minorities, imagining a world where the good white man is being held back and cast aside to allow the evil and unworthy lessers to rise higher in society, destroying it in the process. It also declares cross dressing to be the highest form of moral depravity, its mere existence a sure sign of civilization on the brink of collapse.

This work has a message to impart, and it is one of hating your neighbors because if they are any different than you, they must be pure evil.

The prose itself is passable most of the time but often poor. The dialogue is flat. The characters all shallow.

Give this one a pass, I will not be finishing the series.

Intense action scenes; dark, violent, crude, and no happy ending

At times this story comes across as a scathing allegory of the worst of sentient life, and between these sickening scenes, there is fantastic battles and heroics. I stopped reading at the 70% point and left the book for a couple of months, and then decided to finish it. Ugh. The author kills off the only pleasant character, and it’s blood and guts from then until the end. I skimmed to find out how the adventure concludes, but aside from some great fight scenes, the story does not have a satisfying ending or a hopeful or compelling reason to continue the series.

Received as a review copy from Story Origin, this is an honest review. An absolute binge-worthy, immersive adventure that gets under your skin in that right way you won't forget this book anytime soon. The whole revolves around Charles Raptor that goes from an soldier of honor to losing everything they man cherishes when he becomes a slave to a queen that is a person you'll trust if you want to sacrifice your life to. Undaunted by his circumstances, Charles gives everything has has a person get his freedom back and protect his family, whose memories sustained his sanity within his own turmoil. Highly recommended.

Book 1, this story introduces Raptor, a former soldier. He intends to return home but he is soon separated from his family. Working alongside his fellow slaves, Raptor intends to save his family. The chapters switch between different character perspectives so readers can view a wider view of the story while revolving around Raptor. This is a heavy and long book to read, descriptive, and full of action.

A Thrilling Rebellious Tale

Action and adventure with the classic fantasy cast of humans, dwarves, and orcs, makes this a gripping read with a mix of humor. My only qualm with the book was the excessive use of swearing, as it is just not my style.

Otherwise an excellent read.

Outstanding

A most excellent read! I loved the humanness of the characters… even the non humans! Their characters were explored and emotions laid bare in the plot’s twists and turns.
