I never cry while reading, maybe twice ever, but this book literally broke my heart. I willed myself not to break down. I just kept telling myself "It had to happen, though. It's the only way the story could possibly pull together into its true glory. The. Only. Way." I was internally screaming at TL at more than one point while reading LoveSick but, I loved every moment. My desire for the dark has me devoted to TL Smith's words and I crave more. NEED more! I'm addicted and can't wait to find out if there is more to these characters.
Keegan ' Kee' is damaged. She married an abuser and barely escaped with her life. She's been through more than most to be where she is now. She's still living a sheltered life, as normal as it can be, I guess, but she is living the best she can. She's co-owner alongside her sister, Millie of a bakery and works to busy herself. She works so she doesn't think about the past. Everything seems to be going well until one day when a man walks in and starts beating the walls. He is wickedly handsome but... She fears this man. Not only because of the violence he seems to enjoy inflicting but because of what she sees in his eyes. Despair. And so much of it.
"I couldn’t do broken. Broken is what he was. Broken is what I will always be. To his eyes, that held so much despair, I couldn’t look for long. To his fist, that clenched so tightly, like he was locking away the sorrow. To his lips, that never uttered a word from the years of heartbreak."
Khol is broken, to say the least! This man has been through the worst and then some. His story is heart shattering and I felt so much remorse for him throughout the book. He and his friends, Macca and Brice own the very successful nightclub across the street from the bakery. Although they make good money from the club, it's not all on conventional terms. Khol fights. Not for the money. Not for the power. He fights to ease the pain. To focus his rage on anything to avoid thinking about 'them' and what had happened all those years ago.
While Macca and Brice visit the bakery daily for lunch to catch glimpses of the sisters and their friend, Katie, Khol never liked to tag along... until now. The way that Keegan looked at him, tried so hard to calm him the day he took his anger out on the bakery wall, it has him intrigued. He knew he liked her but he just couldn't admit that to himself. Even though he feels guilty for it, he can't stay away. And even though Keegan is intimidated by him and knows she will never be his 'it', she can't force herself to walk away, either.
"She feels like more... she feels like hope."
"My mind is like my own personal hell, and only she seems to know how to pull me from it."
"I do the unthinkable. The very definition of who I'm not. I take his hand."
And my absolute favorite quote...
""Don't forget to breathe", she whispers in my ear.
How does she know?
How does she know I haven't breathed a single breathe for years?
None of them have felt real. I only breathe to stay alive.
How does she know?"
Can it happen for them? Both broken. Both damaged. Both trying to overcome their pasts. Can they form a healthy relationship? Can they heal each other? Can Khol give Kee what she truly deserves? Or does he give her up so she can be with someone who can?
LoveSick has it all! Romance. Love. Pain. Edginess. Despair. Sex. It was extremely intense and full of that raw emotion we expect from this author. I don't think I've ever gotten through a book this quick, but it was really that impossible to set down. I neglected my own personal needs just to find out what happened next. This is not your average, everyday love story and it is heart wrenching. The storyline is suspenseful and the characters are addicting. They are strong when they have every reason in the world to be weak.
Lovesick by TL Smith was ... WOW! How do I describe what I'm feeling right now? How much I loved this book? I feel speechless! It's so hard to comprehend the emotions running through my mind. If I could give it 100 stars, I would. But I can't so it gets 5. You'll love TL's dangerous men who love with everything they've got and I will not lie when I say they'll leave your heart splintered.
