In Book 3 of The Tales of Caledonia, Bryen realizes that freedom comes with a price. He joins forces with the powerful Magii Sirius and Rafia to master the Curse and devise a plan to free himself from the bonds of his servitude. But it involves risking the lives of his fellow gladiators who know that the odds are stacked against them.
In a palace full of enemies, Aislinn wins the trust of the Blademaster. But time is running out to free herself as the King's betrothed and her father from the Dark Magic poisoning him. With little to stand in his way, Marden will claim the Southern Marches as his own, a fate that will doom the already suffering people of Caledonia.
With the unrest in Caledonia building, the Ghoule Overlord advances unhindered. He's located the Seventh Stone and knows it's only a matter of time before he can destroy the Weir.
Can Aislinn and Bryen stop the King and save the people who matter the most to them? Will their efforts be for naught as the Ghoule Overlord's plot to destroy the Kingdom unfolds?
Growing up in New York when I was a kid, I used to haunt the science fiction and fantasy bookstore in Yonkers, searching for the epic fantasy stories that I loved to read. When I exhausted all my options, I started writing my own stories, never realizing that one day I would publish them.
As you read my stories, you’ll notice certain themes and I like to carry them over from one book to the next. I always include adventure, humor, a few twists, a bunch of fights (magic and steel), and a little romance, along with a few good monsters. But for me it always starts with engaging characters. Because without characters who grow and change as they seek to overcome the challenges placed before them, as they seek to move forward, the story can’t move forward.
In particular, I like to focus on the reluctant hero, a man or a woman not seeking glory, but rather seeking to help others and challenge the evil plaguing the world – a world that I’ve created, The Realms of the Talent and the Curse. They need to learn how to believe in themselves before they can do what’s demanded of them. A personal journey that all of us experience, often more than once in our lifetimes, from lack of belief to belief in the self.

Book Three of the Tales of Caledonia saga. I alternated between listening to the audiobook and reading the book. Perhaps it is because of my gender (female), but I could have done with less fighting and more interaction between the two main characters; Aislinn and Bryen. Actually, there is none although they do think about each other. Since I'm more interested in personal interactions and less interested in military strategy, I don't plan to continue reading this series. There are only so many different ways for the hero to kill a ghoule, and then it is just repetitive. I enjoyed the first book, particularly the interaction between Bryen and Aislinn better than Book 2 and 3.
This installment was much better than the second book. The pacing was better and the battle scene wasn't too long. I was pretty worried with the the first chapter, which was yet another battle against the Ghoulies, but then the author picked up the story line and drove to resolving at least some of the conflicts. He does have a rather annoying habit of re-introducing characters we've been reading about for the whole book like we've never seen them before, and then providing a few paragraphs of backstory that summarize the previous chapter.
Great read, didn't read next 3chapters as I want to read the whole book. Can't wait to see what happens next. Loved this series so far. Great characters and adventures. Thank you Peter Carey
Even though I am not a fan of multiple story lines in a book this book blended them in such a way that made me want to read faster and not get distracted from the main character and storyline.
Each of the characters are well developed. I like the strengths and weaknesses of all the characters. I also love the depth of the world built in these stories. A book you can't put down until you finish it !!!!
Hero shows up to free his gladiator friends in time to save the princess and her father. King is defeated and evil advisor is revealed to be the Overlord. Four combine to send him away for a final battle..
4 stars. Good continuation. The story remains interesting. If I had a criticism it would be that the writing is somewhat verbose, with dialogue sometimes seemingly repetitive.
Not too heavy and good continuation from #2. Moves along nicely and the character development is good. Great summer read - a great escape. Just what I need.
The adventure continues when Bryen the (Protector) returns to the place where he was enslaved as a gladiator to rescue Aislinn Winborne and her father. But also to free himself from the pit by freeing the gladiators that was left behind when he became the protector. He had to encounter Ghouls and the Ghoul Overlord. Also, he has to keep the seventh stone from the Overlord and keep the dark magic the dwells within it. Very intense at times and adventurous. With all the great characters in the previous books continues in this book.
