This book series has four volumes. I prefer to review all four volumes of the series at once.
The book series is enjoyable to read not because of the story itself but because of the author's imaginative and humorous writing. I didn't find the individual characters in the book particularly memorable but I enjoyed the dynamic between Shang Zhi and Shang Yan. Their bickering sibling vibe helped me persevere through the slower parts of the story.
Teen readers will find the plot sweet and adorable, but the story progressed too slowly for me. It could be that Shang Zhi's youth plays a role. I found it quite challenging to connect with Sang Zhi, as she comes off as someone focused only on her own interests. I didn’t really think Shang Zhi changed much from being a kid to a “adult” from vol.1 to vol.4, even with the special chapters. It felt like “ages” were just numbers, not real life experiences for her character.
The main plot may not be the best, but the author does a fantastic job of writing fun conversations between the characters. In an instant, something simple can become interesting. The author wrote other characters quite interestingly, but their actions, like Jiang Ying's in the background of Duan Jia Xu's scenes, lacked clarity and made sense. I found it a bit challenging to fully understand the characters.
Overall, those books are perfect for a cozy day with a cup of coffee. You can chill and get lost in daydreams while reading it for a good time without overthinking.
