I don’t know what GR is doing with my reviews right now but once again, it’s seems that I’ve lost another long review, so here’s a shorter one 🙄
Mo has lost faith in his ability to perform exorcisms, due to the failure of the last one, in which the possessed victim murdered her parents, then killed herself. He moves away to another town, but realises that the young girl living next door, who he thought was sick, is in fact, possessed by a demon. He has a battle with himself at first as he’s lost the confidence he had, but can’t leave this girl to suffer, so eventually goes to war with this demon. This is the first book by Rick Wood that I’ve read which isn’t a splatterpunk....it’s just a damn good possession story, and I thoroughly enjoyed all the creepiness which was on offer throughout. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes a good battle between darkness and light! I for one, am looking forward to reading the second book in this series. 5 📿📿📿📿📿 rating!!!
The writing was good in THE HAUNTING OF EVIE MEYERS, but it was a very slow start (beyond the "prologue"). More of half was basically detailing the two different characters (Evie, and the former exorcist). While Evie's detailed her downhill progression, our MC was basically depressing--trying to build sympathy for a man who left for "unrequited love--basically drank and felt sorry for himself the entire time, just didn't work for me. When they finally connect, he comes off as foolish (knowing he can't handle this on his own), and so uncertain that I was never pulled into the story completely.
As always, everyone's opinion is unique, and what didn't capture my attention may be what someone else loves. I urge you to read this for yourself if it sounds like something you'd like.
The Haunting of Evie Myers is the first book in the new Rogue Exorcist series, this series is after The Sensitives and in this book we get to meet an exorcist called Moses and after an exorcism that doesn't go well be decides to leave everyone behind to get away from it all.
He moves into his new home and unbeknownst to him the girl next door Evie gets possessed and he is struggling fighting his own inner demons and he is also struggling should be help?
Well I demolished this book in a few sittings and this author knows how to reel you in and not let go, absolutely loved it can't wait for the next in the series.
I love horror books, especially when there is a demon to take on. It is a lonely life for the Sensitives and it’s no different for Mo. he has unrequited love for April. She is not ready to let go of Oscar and probably never will be. Mo is at his lowest. He lives in a barely livable place, has no job and has enemies where he lives. As Evie continues to be tortured by the demon, MO’s life spirals out of control. He knows he should help Evie but he is reluctant. Once he takes on the demon, she uses every trick she can to wear him down. This author does not write happy endings, he writes real life. That is why I love reading his books. This is a must read.
This story caught me by surprise I started it this afternoon and read throughout the day. The only part I passed over were the overly sexual parts, but not a lot of that.
👀 “When your neighbour’s possessed by a demon, but you’re just trying to drink in peace…”
This was MEANT TO BE my spooky Halloween read…but life had other ideas 😂 So I ended up starting it on Halloween night instead, and honestly? Zero regrets. It was the perfect creepy companion for a night of sugar crashes and jump scares.
Y’all already know I’m weak for anything involving demons, haunted houses, and unholy chaos 😈 — and this one, albeit slow didn’t disappoint.
Now, I won’t lie — the beginning was sloooow. Like “come on demon, do your thing already” slow 😅 But once it kicked in, it really got interesting.
Rick Wood put a refreshing twist on the whole possession story that I didn’t see coming.
The story’s told through two POVs: Evie (the poor girl who’s literally possessed) and Mo (the exorcist who’s emotionally done with life and everything in general).
Mo’s parts dragged a little — I was itching to get back to Evie and her demon drama 👀 But when the pace picked up? I was hooked. Creepy, emotional, and surprisingly heartfelt in all the right places.
One thing I've learnt from reading this is that, if you happen to walk into a house that smells rotten and has an upside down crucifix RUN cos that house is demonic
For fans of supernatural horror with a side of despair, possession, and emotional damage, give this one a shot but only if you enjoy a slow start.
I give this one a ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5, but only because of the Demon posession part which in all honesty really made the book.
This book was a good read but lacked fullness….like the half empty glass. The water was refreshing but you want more. Dissatisfying. The main character? What a traveling pity-party. Even when he accomplished his goal it was so out of character it wasn’t even a relief. The proofreading, of course, was under par ….really annoying. After reading this review I probably should have lowered the rating..
This was like reading a story of a man-baby taking a shot at helping another person. The most unsettling thing about this entire book was our man-baby protagonist constantly running back into his flat to hide and then whining about his lost love. I honestly found Moses to be unlikable in every way imaginable, which hindered me from enjoying the story itself (which was pretty good).
I wanted to like this book - a nice haunting/exorcism story right before Easter - but the writing was too basic (tended to repeat itself and read simply). I was able to conjure good mental images to go along with the events and I enjoyed it somewhat. Didn't realize this was a series and will not be reading any more further into it.
Phew, what an intense but fabulous story! Kept me reading for sure and felt like I was right there with the characters fighting the evil with them! Thank you, Rick, for such an awesome story! 😀
I was pleasantly surprised with this book. Once I started I couldn’t put it down and devoured it in a day. A great horror story, very graphic in parts.
This is more of a question than anything. After I read this, I immediately read The Sensitives series. Then this book picks up introducing Mo, and mentions April. Are there books in between these two series that initially introduces Mo? I realize only people who have read both will know the answer. If you haven't read The Sensitives series, do it! It's incredible.
